Chapter 5

"So.." Bella started, "Dr Cullen." She finished nonchalantly.

"What about him? Why are you looking at me like that?" I glanced at her, "And don't think I can't see that you trying to hide a smirk."

"He seemed extremely interested." She teased.

"Is that so." I continued to fix the road.

"Oh come on! Didn't you see the way he looked at you?"

" Uh huh. He is also an older man by god only knows how many years. With five adopted teenagers. Who goes to the same school as us." I said dully. "Your point being?"

"Oh forget about it!" She exclaimed by throwing her hands up.

"Okay. Now, please call dad to let him know you are okay and that we are on our way home. Thank you~"

She called dad and reassured him before hanging up. We made the rest of the journey home in silence. At that point I was beyond tired. Forget food, I just wanted my bed. It had started raining midway home and by the time I parked in the driveway it was freezing as hell. Bella and I made a mad dash to the house in the vain hope of keeping ourselves dry.

Dad was waiting for us at the door with towels in his hand.

"Here take these and dry off. The last thing you need is to fall ill."

We did as asked and quickly dried off, especially our hair.

"I am going to change my clothes." I shouted as I made my way up the stairs. I quickly got rid of my damp clothes, which smelled like the hospital, and pulled on a big woolen sweater and thick fluffy trousers. I finished by putting on long woolen socks and drying my hair with a blow dryer.

Now feeling warm, I went back downstairs where I found dad questioning Bella about her hand. It seems like Bella had already taken care of cleaning up the failed pasta.

"Bella you should have gone to change your clothes and dry your hair. Don't complain if you get ill."

"Wait a minute please! I'll go change quickly." She said as she ran upstairs.

" Adaline the burn is nothing serious, is it? You know Bella has a habit of downplaying her injuries." Dad asked as I put plates on the table.

"Yes it is nothing serious. The doctor confirmed it. She'll just have some difficulty writing because it is near her thumb."

Dinner that night was burgers and chips.

"Which doctor?"

My hand paused slightly in the act of fetching our glasses, "Dr Cullen."

"Ah good then. Dr Cullen is a good doctor. The best really." Dad said while putting his burger and chips on his plate.

"Hmm is that so. So how was your day dad?" I said, trying to steer the conversation away from Dr Cullen.

Fortunately he took the bait. Bella came down a few minutes later and we could finally eat. The rest of dinner passed with little conversation and after we had all finished, I got up to clean the table. Bella had cleaned the previous mess and now it was my turn. I gathered all the plates and glasses and carried them to the sink. I mostly tuned out Bella and dad as they talked behind me. I was in the middle of rinsing the last glass when I heard Bella ask dad about the Cullens.

'Why did you have to bring up this accursed name again!' I shouted to Bella in my head as I snapped my head around to give her the 'big eyes'. 'Abort this conversation!'

'She ignored me! Just you wait! When you send me an SOS in the future to save you from dad, well on that day the telepathy will fail for sure!' I narrowed my eyes, conveying my thoughts.

She rolled her eyes at me in answer. I have had enough of the Cullen name for today thank you very much. They are talked about everywhere. It sure gets annoying. It must be really tedious for them.

Dad proceeded to go on a rant about how people treat them. 'Wow for dad to vent this much, he must really have a high opinion about them. I mean I knew he liked them, especially Dr Cullen, but not to this extent. '

Bella beat a hasty retreat after that rant and I said goodnight to dad before doing the same. I closed the door to my room and walked to the window, taking a seat on the window sill. 'It's still raining. Oh rain, how I love thee. You are so soothing.' I closed my eyes and listened to the sound of rain falling with a smile on my face.

Now that I was alone in my room, I could recharge. Alone time is essential for me or else I get stressed and irritated. I let out an exhale and opened my eyes. For a moment I thought I saw a white figure near the edge of the trees. But when I looked properly, there was nothing.

'Huh must be my imagination. Guess I am more tired than I thought.'

After all what dunderhead would be standing in this freezing rain, at the edge of a forest filled with wild animals when it was so dark outside? I paused at that thought for a moment before deadpanning, "A stalker. A stupid one at that."

"If there are any dunderhead weirdos lurking out there, I hope to merlin that they freeze their gonads off." I muttered to myself while looking at the edge of the forest.

With that thought, I locked my window, got up to get my things ready for tomorrow and programmed my alarm. I put out the light and laid under the covers of my bed. As I closed my eyes, the face of Dr Cullen appeared into my mind causing my heartbeat to accelerate a little. I sat up abruptly, holding my covers tightly in my hands.

When I met the doctor, I didn't let my emotions get the best of me. I ignored all the signals my brain was sending me and behaved casually. I greatly disliked expressing or displaying my emotions freely. I liked to be in control of my expressions, emotions and thoughts. At least I tried to. I could shut down my emotions at times and be a ruthless B with an itch in extreme cases. It was rare for me to do so but I was capable of it.

Most times, when my mother and Bella irritated me, I could control myself and speak calmly or I just went to my room to calm down. But once, they got me extremely angry. And believe me, it is very difficult to get me really angry. I don't like arguments and drama. I like to be calm and peaceful. I don't like expressing anger because I get mean with my words when it happens. I won't take into consideration the other party's feelings and aim to hurt them verbally. Add to that my cold and stoic face when it happens, well I scared them badly. Since then they keep on telling me that they never want to see me this angry again. You know what they say about the 'quiet ones'.

"Oh..no no no no. Absolutely not! I refuse it ! Why?! All these years being uninterested in the male species and now I am reacting to my classmate's father! There are billions of people on this earth and those stupid hormones just had to go and react to that one man!" I exclaimed in a whisper.

"Oh sweet merlin, please don't tell me that this is what people call a …crush."

I sat there with a dumbfounded face for a long moment before I vehemently laid back down and pulled the covers over my head.

"Denial is not just a river in Egypt." I said optimistically to myself.

"I won't be one of those fools that fell in 'love' at first sight or whatever."

With that thought, I plugged in my earphones and let the soothing violin music lull me to sleep.

I woke up to my alarm the next day. I groggily made my way to the bathroom for my normal routine. Today I chose dark blue jeans, a white long-sleeved shirt with a collar and a cream knitted jumper. For shoes, I chose to wear my knee-high combat boots. I did my eyebrows, curled my lashes and put on tinted lip balm. After quickly brushing my hair, I made my way downstairs with my bag. I decided to let my hair down today.

I prepared breakfast for my father and Bella, then sat down with a cup of tea. I zoned out as I waited for them to come down. I came out of my daydreaming when dad sat down at the table.

"Morning. Thanks for breakfast." He said before taking a big gulp of coffee.

"Good morning. And you are welcome."

"Are you taking your car today?"

"Hmm no. It would be useless to drive two vehicles when we are going at the same place and coming at the same time. When the roads are icy we could take my car as it is safer. And if Bella ever has plans after school with her friends, I'll drive my car and she'll drive hers."

"Okay. The Jimny handles icy roads better so that's a good idea. Your snow chains are in the garage. I'll take a look at them later."

"Thank you~"

Bella came down a few minutes later, "Morning." She said listlessly.

Dad and I returned her greeting. It seemed like she didn't sleep well. She sat down and started eating her cereal.

"How's your hand Bella?" Dad enquired.

"It's okay. It still hurts when I move my thumb but it's bearable. I put the gel and changed the bandage."

"Good." He said as he got up from the table, " I have to go. Have a good day at school girls."

"Thank you. Same to you." I replied while Bella grunted into her cereal.

I washed my cup then went to the living room to wait for Bella. When she was done we made our way to door and put on our coats.

"Whose car are we taking?" Bella asked.

"Yours." I replied before opening the door and making my way to the truck.

We got in and made our way to school. It was not raining this morning but it was still cold.

"What are you going to do about your situation with Edward Cullen ?" I asked Bella as she drove.

"I decided to confront him today." She said with a burst of confidence.

"You sure?"

"Yea. I want to know what his problem is."

"Okay then, be careful. If the conversation gets out of control, aim for the genitals. Don't hold back."

"Adaline!" She exclaimed while laughing. "That's too cruel."

"What? Your leg could just have happened to kick out. By reflex of course." I explained innocently.

"Really I pity the guy who happens to get you angry one day."

"All is fair in war sweetheart." I replied with a sweet smile.

"You can be so mean." She laughed out loud.

"Thank you very much. That is a great compliment."

We got to school a little early, so Bella decided to wait for Edward Cullen in the parking lot. She leaned against the front of the truck with her earphones on while she waited. As for me I was still sitting inside the truck, listening to music.

Approximately ten minutes later, the Cullens and Hales arrived. I watched as Bella tried to discreetly scan for Edward Cullen. Unfortunately for her, he was not present.

I tried to stifle my laughter as I looked at Bella's disappointed and irritated face. Poor Bella. She had gathered her courage and revved herself up for the confrontation, only for the target to be absent. It was too funny and I couldn't hold my laughter very well.

Suddenly Alice, Jasper and Emmett turned around and smiled at me. They seemed to be laughing too as Rosalie stood with her arms crossed at the side. She did have a small smile on her face though. Alice and Emmett waved at me and I returned their wave with a bemused smile.

Classes were going to start in a few, so I got out of the car. Bella walked to me and exclaimed incredulously, "He did not come!"

"Don't be disappointed Bella. There is always next time." I patted her shoulder as I consoled her. I couldn't hide the laughter in my voice very well.

She sent me a frustrated look.

"Oh come on Bella. You have to admit it is quite funny. You got all fired up only for him to play truant. Anyway classes are about to start so let's go."
