Chapter 15
It was Sunday afternoon after that marvelous bonfire. I was on my phone chatting with my excited mother.
Renée: "But really Adaline, you could call me more often! I miss you and Bella so much."
Adaline: " Mom you know very well I don't like calling people. And I reply to all your e-mails, don't I?"
Renée: "Yes you do. So what's up with Bella? Her replies have been vague lately. I feel like she is hiding something from me. I feel like you are leaving some things out too. But with you I am used to it. I know you are a private person. But Bella normally doesn't hesitate to tell me anything."
'Wow mother, you may be ditzy but your intuition sure is good. Kudos to you.'
Out loud I said non-committally, "is that so."
Renée: "Do you know anything?"
I said teasingly, "You know that I wouldn't tell you anything even if I knew. If she wants to tell you, she will. I am duty bound as a sister to keep her secrets. So ask her directly please."
Renée: "So there is something! How exciting! What is it? Did she finally find a boyfriend?"
Adaline: "No comments. And why is that the first thing that comes to your mind? She could have just been feeling down because she misses you."
Renée: "I thought so too, so I suggested her to come back live with me and she resolutely refused. When I told her I could come visit, she quickly rejected it too. It was quite fishy to me the way she panicked when she said no. You know Bella, she can't lie for the life of her. So I thought that there was something in Forks that she couldn't leave behind and didn't feel comfortable letting me know. But anyways, I can interrogate her later. What about you?"
"What about me?" Adaline replied innocently.
Renée: "Come on! You know what I am asking about! Any cute boys catch your eyes?"
Adaline: "Please, I have no interest in those immature boys."
"Hmm yes, you are too mature for boys your age. You need someone who can keep up with you. Maybe a man in his twenties. How about a sexy little doctor?" Mom said giddily.
My heart jumped in my chest as I heard my mother say this, 'really mom, your intuition is too good! Sweet baby jesus, I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest.'
I fanned my warm face and hastily changed the subject, "Enough about me. What about you. Are you enjoying traveling with Phil?"
Renée: "I see what you did just now. I'll let it flow. And yes, I am enjoying traveling with Phil. Right now we are in hotel near a beach. I bought a sexy little bikini and plan to tan later."
Adaline: "Don't forget sunscreen and don't fall asleep. No need to re-enact the day where you fell asleep while tanning and had to stay lying naked on the bed for days because you were sun burnt. "
Renée: "Ugh don't remind me of that day! It fricking hurt! Maybe I'll just take a swim then. Oh by the way, I met with my old friend's son. The one who pursued you ardently, you remember? "
I grimaced, "I only remember a dunderhead annoying me. Fortunately, I remember neither his face nor his name."
Renée: "His name is Tom Speville."
"So that's his name. I couldn't remember it. Not that I tried hard to do so." I said blandly. "So, what about him?"
Renée remained silent for too long on the other side. I squinted my eyes and asked cautiously, "what did you do?"
Renée: "Promise you won't get angry?"
Adaline: "So you did something you know would make me angry? Pray tell, what did you do that would make me angry?
Renée: "I didn't do it on purpose, I swear! It's just that we were talking and he suddenly mentioned you."
Adaline: "Mom just say it."
"I may have told him where you were when he inquired about your whereabouts. And he may or may not have said that he would come by to visit you…" Mom trailed on meekly.
I exclaimed angrily, "Mom!"
Renée: "What did you want me to do? He asked directly and I couldn't not answer ,could I?!"
I reasoned, "You could have told him to mind his own business and that your daughter doesn't want his visit! At all!"
Renée: "How could I say something like that?! That's my friend's son!"
"A 'friend' with whom you haven't talked for a long time and who is a big hypocrite!" I interrupted.
Mom gasped outrageously, "Adaline!"
Adaline: "It's the truth and you know it. Do you dare deny it?"
Renée acquiesced, "okay it's true. But that has nothing to do with his son. How about you give him a chance Adaline? Who knows you may fall in love with him?"
I made a sound of utter disgust, "how about NO? I know that he is not his mother. But I still am not interested. Listen well mom. I mature enough to know what I want and what I don't want. And I don't want him in my life in any way, thank you very much. I don't like his personality and his overbearing attitude. He rubs me the wrong way. His mere presence irritates me. I told you that before. I am not one of those who say no just to be difficult or to be chased or some other nonsense like that. When I say no I really mean NO. As my mother you should have known that. I expected you to respect my decision."
"…You are right. I was wrong. Can you please forgive me Adaline?" Mom asked softly.
I took a deep breath and slowly exhaled to calm down, " okay but please never divulge such information to anybody outside family in the future. And please understand once and for all that I am not interested in Spareville."
Mom corrected gently, "Speville."
Adaline: "Yes, that."
Renée: " Okay, I understand. Should I call him and tell him that his visit is not welcomed. Or that you went on a vacation to Thailand?"
I asked sceptically, "do you have his phone number? Or his mother's?"
Silence was my answer.
"That's what I thought." I said exasperatingly. "Nevermind, I'll just deal with him if he comes knocking. Or better yet, I'll let dad deal with him. That would be funny. Now I want him to come just to see that!" I laughed.
"Adaline!" Renée reproached but ended up laughing too, "Okay that would be funny. But don't be too hard on the boy. He is just infatuated. Who can fault him for that? You are a beautiful and amazing young woman. There has been many other boys who fell for you. But alas, they could clearly see that you were not interested and that a relationship was not in your list of priorities. "
I was quite surprised at that. "There were?" I asked puzzingly.
Renée: "Yes there were! You just didn't see it because you frankly didn't care and were more interested in your books and anime. Whenever we went out, many boys looked at you. Some even came to ask me for your phone number. I think that your stoic face made you unapproachable. I refused them all, don't worry. "
I drawled, "Thank merlin for small mercies. If you could have refused this time too, it would have been good."
Mom chuckled, "okay okay sorry sweetheart. Anyway, I have to go. Talk to you later! Cheers!"
I smiled, "Okay bye mom. Have fun."
I hanged up and looked at the last message Carlisle sent me. The whole family had gone camping yesterday and would be coming back tonight.
'I don't know if I should be afraid for when Alice comes back. She is going to flood me with messages and ask for every details of my day. Better enjoy the respite while it still lasts.'
Just as I had predicted, Alice called me as soon as she got home. I looked at my mobile and debated on puttting it on silence and doing as if I went to sleep. Just as I was going to do that, my phone stopped ringing and vibrated, indicating that I had received a message.
I deadpanned, ' should I bet with myself on whether this message is from the hellish pixie or not?'
I opened the message and let out a groan.
Pixiefromhell: [ Adaline I know that you are not sleeping yet. Don't even think about putting your phone on silent. I can take the car and come see you right now! Don't think I won't do it! If you don't want that to happen, please answer your phone. xo]
I looked blankly at her message before sending one to the good doctor.
A:[ Your daughter is a menace. Please bribe her with clothes and put her to sleep. Oh and welcome back. Hope you had fun at your camping trip.]
Carlisle:[ Good evening Adaline. I indeed had 'fun', thank you. And should you really be encouraging bribery. Tsk tsk tsk, what rogue behaviour Miss Swan. P.S: she is too hyped right now. I regret to tell you that you will have to deal with her alone.]
'Regret my backside. Just say you are having fun at my expense.'
A:[Somehow I doubt your 'regret'. She is menacing to come to my house if I don't answer her call. This is considered rogue behaviour too. Kindly discipline her.]
Just as I pressed send, my phone rang again.
"Alice." I groaned as I answered her call.
Alice squealed,"Addy! How could you ignore my call?! Anyway, how was your day? And how did the bonfire go? Tell me everything! Don't leave any detail out."
I muttered, "My day was boring and the bonfire…well it was strange."
Alice: "Strange? And I said not to leave any details out. Your answer didn't have any details at all!"
Adaline: "There is no way I am doing that. You can forget about it. And it was strange because of the weird gang dude."
Alice: "Weird gang dude?"
Adaline: "Yes long story short, I was enjoying a good book when a dunderhead thought it would be a good idea to chat me up. I ignored him and went to sit next to Jacob and Bella. I was left alone for a while before he came back again and invited himself into a conversation where his opinion was not solicited, at all. He asked me to come with him so we can have a 'conversation' and I coldly rejected him. When Jacob came to my defence and aggressively told him to go away, he started shaking like crazy."
"What?!" Alice exclaimed alarmedly.
Strangely I heard a 'whoosh' from her side. Like a gush of air and a growl. It was really faint so I don't know whether I heard wrong or not.
Adaline: "Yes, I mean it was really strange. His friends had to come drag him away. Good riddance I say."
Alice: "I told you to be careful! That could have been dangerous! What were you even doing away from Bella?!"
I grimaced, "Too awkward a situation. So I preferred to sit a little farther. Calm down. Nothing drastic happened. And my father was there too."
Alice: "Really Adaline. Next time you should stick to your father or Bella. Thank god nothing bad happened."
Adaline: " No way. My dad has to socialise with his friends and Bella has a shadow. And there won't be a next time. There is no way I am going there again. One bonfire was enough for me, thank you very much. And I don't want to see the gang dude again."
Alice: "Why are you calling him gang dude? Do you know his name?"
Adaline: "Blame Jacob. He told me that he was in a gang, so I started calling him weird gang dude in my head. I think his name was Lahote. Meeting him once was more than enough. I never want to see him again."
Alice sighed, " It's good that you don't plan on going there again. Really, will we have to scare boys away from you at every corner in the future?"
Adaline " Don't be so dramatic. And whoever said you had to do so? I can refuse any unwanted attention by myself, thank you very much."
Alice: " A little help never hurts."
I rolled my eyes, "if you say so. Anyway we have school tomorrow. I am going to sleep. You should do so too."
Alice: "Okay I'll let you go sleep. But I want to hear more details tomorrow. You left out a lot. See you tomorrow Addy! Good night."
Adaline: "Good night."
"Merlin give me strength. I'll have to fend off Alice and tear Eddy into pieces tomorrow…Better go to sleep."
With that said, I turned off my light and got into bed. As I drifted to sleep, I heard my phone vibrate.
'Forget it. I'll look at it tomorrow.' Was my last thought as I fell asleep.
