As the first group of ducks filed out, Danielle met up with Thom. She thought about what the Commander and soldiers exchanged before they left. "I've heard that saying since I was small." She said softly. Thom looked at her with curiosity. "You have?"
"Derek, my brother, said that our Grandfather taught him that. And he's applied it to his Peace Officer group."
"Your brother's a Peace Officer?
"At least he was before…' 'Before.' She finished quietly. Thom only hummed in acknowledgement. Then he straightened up. It was their turn to go out. "Alright. Now, get in your position." He said to her.
Danielle took her place with Clapper. He gave a shy wave to her, which she returned with a polite nod.
"Ducks Flock Together!" The Commander announced. And the soldiers, including Danielle chorused."Puckworld Forever!"
"Move out!"
15 minutes later, Danielle found herself enroute to the battleground, with Clapper walking behind her.
"You guys stay close, there's hunter drones in the area." Greybeak said to them in a whisper, before walking ahead.
"You heard him, Angelwing. It's dangerous out here." Clapper said. The female however, didn't reply. She wanted no distractions.
'I better not mess up…'
She spotted something on the ground. Half buried in the dirty snow. Nearing it, Danielle's heart broke. It was a little teddy bear. It's left eye was missing and it's right arm was close to coming off. She picked it up and hugged it to her. Thinking of the poor child who might've lost it. War was just terrible. Innocents losing their lives, and to think of those who had barely begun to live...
"Miss Angelwing?"
"Huh?...!"
It was only Clapper. "Are you okay?"
"Umm…"
"If there's something bothering you, I'd like to help you…"
Danielle noted his politeness. But she was a bit concerned. Feeling this guy had a crush on her, but frankly, she didn't feel the same way. "Guys, be careful.' Wally whispered, poking his head around the corner. 'Hunter Drones have been spotted on our path…"
*PEW*
"WOAH!"
"Halt! You are under arrest and will be sentenced to Work Camp 2."
Wally shot the hunter drone, to see more coming. "You guys take cover!"
Forcing herself to stay calm, Danielle looked around for a possible escape route. Then she was about to be pulled away by Clapper. "Come on!"
The two of them were about across an abandoned street, Danielle tried to stop him out of concern for Greybeak and Wally. "Wait! What about-!" Then suddenly, a laser blast came at them. Clapper was struck in the head, knocking him out cold.
"Clapper!" Danielle cried out in terror. She checked his vitals, to see for sure if he was alive. She looked in the direction of the shot, to find one Hunter drone on their left, and another on their right. The robots slowly closed in on the downed duck, setting their lasers from stun, to kill. Danielle wasn't sure what to do next, but one thing she did know, she had to save him. So, she took out her puck blaster. 'I'll have to draw them away…"
"Destroy the duck!" The first drone commanded, when suddenly a fiery puck shot right past it's sensors. The robots looked to see Danielle, standing and holding up her now smoking puck blaster. "Come and get me!" She hollered as she ran the other direction. The two hunter drones gave chase.
Danielle ran as fast as she could, but stopped for a moment to see the drones not far behind and closing in. What was she thinking?! In a panic, she turned right to go down another way, and lifted up her comm.
"C-Captain! Captain, can you hear me?!" She cried out for help. But the only answer she got was static. Oh, Drake...
But Danielle suddenly thought about what she just said. She looked and found an open door in the side of an old house. Giving her the chance to take cover. Once Danielle was hidden, she was forcing herself to stay calm. "Okay… what would Canard do?"
Knowing him, he would shoot wisely. Knowing just where to strike. But how will she know? Then she remembered something the Commander told her during training. An opponent always reveals their weakness in how they attack.
"Hmm, the drones shoot with their right arms...If I can get in close, take out their guns, and then the power source...I hope that works."
The cream colored dolly waited patiently until the robots were close enough. But she was scared out of her mind. It wasn't like training, it was real life, where if you're not careful, you're dead. Before she could change her mind, the hunter drones were seconds away. It was now or never!
With a battle cry, Danielle whirled out of her hiding spot and opened fire!
*PEWPEW!"
She hit the first drone's arm, but grazed the second one. However the graze was deep enough for major damage.
Without giving them a chance to attack, Danielle then shot an explosive puck at the two drones. With a loud, resounding boom, both drones fell over. Half way blown, but completely nonoperational.
Danielle sighed in relief. 'That was lucky...' Looking around, she checked to make sure more robots weren't coming, once she was sure, the dolly took off to catch up with her teammates when a sound caught her attention.
Crying
Curious, Danielle decided to take a look. Maybe a civilian was near and needed help? But what about Clapper? Maybe Greybeak and Wally can get to him...She spoke into her comm unit.
"Guys, this is Angelwing. Come in."
"Angelwi-*crackles*-Status?"
"Look for Clapper, 25 yards south west from your position. He was stunned by the hunter drones. I think I heard a civilian, so I'm going to investigate. Over and out."
Closing her comm, the cream colored dolly took off to find the source of the noise.
Meanwhile, not to far away, the designated battle grounds were being held at an old highway junction on the outskirts of the city. The plan was to shoot down the Saurian Aircraft once it passed over the city, where it could crash out on the flat lands. Far from the city, and away from civilians. The commander himself has made a point in no collateral damage, and for good reason.
Only a few hunter drones were patrolling the area, looking for civilians to enslave or kill if they resisted. Nothing the snipers couldn't handle.
Bam! With that, all the hunter drones were down for the count. A dark grey dolly with brown hair blew her smoking puck blaster. Then turned to the tan drake.
"Alright Captain, we're clear and 10 minutes ahead of schedule."
"Excellent.' Canard replied, it was time for Thom's team to join the fray. 'McMallard. Your squad is clear to enter."
"Copy that, we're on our way Sir."
Thom and his squad had caught up with the group, and filed into position. But he noticed something wrong. There were at least 14 ducks before they left, now there's just 10. "Where are they?" he muttered.
"McMallard, is that everybody?" Canard questioned as he caught up.
"No Sir, four more are missing."
"Who?"
"Puckworth, Fagerbeak, Gooddrake, and-"The red headed drake was cut off when his comm went off.
"Lieutenant McMallard."
"Lieutenant,' It was Greybeak. 'we have a problem. Wally and I ran into a couple of hunter drones. We got 'em before any one of them could transmit to others, thank Drake, but…"
"But what?" Thom asked. Canard remained silent, but stared at the comm intensely.
"Wally found Gooddrake laying senseless, he's alive. But Angelwing's nowhere to be found."
"WHAT?!" Canard snapped. Why wasn't Danielle with them?! Unless...She must have been kidnapped again!
Any duck who didn't know Canard well enough, or hadn't served in the military, would have jumped out of their feathers at his yell."Oh, uh, sir!" Greybeak said through the unit, realizing the captain had been listening in. "I assure you, sir, that we got all the drones. It's likely she's just hiding down a different street."
Canard growled, Thom watching him with wide eyes. "Is that so, Greybeak? And if she's missing, how do you know one or a dozen of them didn't trail her?"
"S-sir-"
"Send your coordinates NOW, Greybeak, and start searching!"
"Of course sir, yes sir."
"We'll be on our way shortly. McMallard out." Thom shut off the communication just as Canard cursed.
"Can't leave anyone! Alone with her..." The tan drake hissed under his breath. He checked his puck blaster and his ammo. "McMallard. You wait with the others. Stick to the attack plan."
"Of course, Captain." Thom replied. "Call for assistance if there may be a need."
Canard just nodded, when beep came from his comm. The coordinates have just been received. Canard then took off. Danielle was out there alone, but she won't be for long. He had to help her. 'Hang in there Danielle, I'm coming.'
