Three minutes earlier, one of the soldiers was ready to take down the aircraft. But he never got the chance."Ugh, c'mon!' Goldburd smacked at his puck cannon trying to trigger it. But it was jammed tight. Agent Shimmerwing, who was nearby, took notice of him and walked up.
"Hey, you really shouldn't be doing that, y'know..." She pointed out.
"Relax. This pro's got it under control." He brushed off. But just as he said that, the puck cannon unjammed and shot off, combusting in the process! To make matters worse, the flaming puck hit a propane tank! With a big "KA-BOOM!"
One soldier heard the noise and came out.
"F-Fire! Fire!' He cried out when he saw the flames. 'Code D-16-06!"
This was an emergency code. Soldiers and First Responders alike follow these codes. Canard stepped out when he heard the shouting, followed by Thom.
"Dane, tell the Gamma team to get the wounded back to base!' The latter ordered the same soldier. "Everyone else, we have to put out this fire!"
Once 'Dane' raced back in, Thom raced out to get to Shimmerwing and Goldburd. But then suddenly, a small generator close to the fire, blew up as well. Sending flaming pieces everywhere!
"Look out!" As the flaming debris shot around. Until something shot at Thom, which he tried to block with his arm. The glowing embers hit his exposed arm and the side of his head to his neck.
The red headed drake bent over, yelling out in pain. "Lieutenant McMallard!" A soldier cried out. He raced over to help Shimmerwing assist him. And they brought him over to the medics. Canard saw that Thom was wounded. He took the injured duck to sit.
"Get the wounded soldiers back to base!' He ordered one soldier, then she rushed in to do as she was told. Danielle quickly finished with another patient. Then she helped the other female take the patient out through the exit. When she paused, looking at the fire.
"Angelwing." Said the soldier.
"I heard something.' She replied. And then she saw something. Something terrible. Wait...C-Captain! There's civilians in that building!" True enough a multitude of 25 or 30 civilians were in the building and the fire was starting to spread. Some of the ducks inside came running to the windows and started screaming for help.
Canard cursed under his breath out of shock and fear. Then he shouted into his comm. "Attention! Initiate Code 06-18! Repeat, initiate Code 06-18!"
There is always a plan within every mission, and special codes to initiate them. In this case, P-06-18 means. "Procedure; Fire Rescue". Then, a white feathered, middle-aged duck ran up to the captain. "Sergeant Blazetip! Reporting for duty, Sir!"
"You've had firefighting experience?"
"Yes sir. 15 years before the invasion."
"Good."
"Listen up. We gotta contain this fire before it spreads!" Blazetip gathered the volunteering soldiers, and instructed them to create a fire break to the left of the building. While some were getting the fire contained, others volunteered to help rescue the trapped civilians.
"I gotta go in and help those civilians get out!"
"Marcel, this is against regul-!"
"There's lives that need saving Thom! That's more important than following the handbook! "
Before Thom could argue, Marcel and the other two volunteers braced themselves, and went into the inferno. The older twin knew that saving lives was important but still...Marcel can get reckless and impulsive. A lot.
"I wonder if it's too late to switch him for Mallory…" The drake mumbled. Mallory McMallard was the youngest and only girl in the family. While his little sister wasn't as stubborn, she was still hot headed. But he didn't think about that for long. He had a duty to uphold. They had to make sure all the civilians were out and safe.
As one soldier brought a child to safety, Danielle was checking the civilians, making sure no one was hurt. But anyone who was hurt, she and Clapper tended to. Looking up, Danielle was relieved as Canard came back, and he was helping an elderly drake.
"Here you go, Sir."
"Oh. Thank you, young man."
"Captain! Is that everybody?" Danielle asked, still tending to a patient.
The tan duck came up to her. "Yeah, that's everyone."
The rest of the fire and rescue squadron came back, except for one. Thom, who was sitting on a crate till he could get his bearings, was looking around. "Captain, I don't think Marcel's out yet!"
"What?!"
Danielle stood up and pulled out a cloth from her bag. She started to get worried. If Marcel is still inside the building, he'll surely perish. To make matters worse, the building was about to collapse. Something's wrong, she just knew it. "Captain, Marcel should've been out by now! We must help him!"
"I know Angelwing,' Canard replied. 'but there's still some time, we'll give Marcel another minute. If he doesn't come out, I'll go in."
"But Captain-!"
The captain just put his hands on Danielle's shoulders.
"Angelwing. I know what I'm doing." He firmly stated, looking her in the eyes. Danielle looked at him with concern. He was dead serious. There were times when Danielle didn't know whether Canard's stubbornness was admirable or just plain stupid. Though in this case, it was more of the former. Then they heard a voice.
"Captain!"
One soldier was dragging a certain drake by the arm. And it looked like his hands were cuffed behind his back. "Turns out, Goldburd here decided to show off. He caused the fire!"
The feathers on Canard's neck bristled harshly as he tensed. "Goldburd, how did it happen?! What did you do?!"
"It was a misfire, Captain. The stupid thing was jammed. And I had no idea that was gonna happen!" Goldburd defended.
"No excuses! My brother is still inside! Of all the idiotic, stupid-!" Thom added in.
Danielle couldn't believe it. Why are they choosing now, of all times, to yell at somebody?! There was a soldier in that fire! Get your priorities straight, ducks!
"L-Lieutenant, the fire-!" However, she was being ignored at this point. While the drakes scolded the perpetrator, Danielle stared at Canard, then she looked at Thom. 'He should be more worried for his brother.' She looked back at the burning building. The flames have gotten a bit larger. 'And the fire is only getting worse. The building could collapse any moment now. Something must be wrong with Marcel. ...I know I shouldn't defy orders, but...' She thought, turning her gaze to the tan drake. His back was turned to her, and his focus was solely on Goldburd. Danielle stared up at him sadly and longingly for a moment, just in case, then she turned away. 'I'm sorry Canard…'
"-How was I supposed to know my Puck Cannon was wonky?!"
Canard shook his head in disgust at the drake. "I don't have time for you! I gotta retrieve Marcel!"
"Angelwing, be ready to-!" He turned around, only to find she wasn't right behind him. She must have gone to check on the civilians. But as Canard looked toward the group, he didn't see her. Okay, her disappearing acts were getting very old, very fast!
"Oh, where'd she go now?!" Canard groaned, annoyingly.
Thom looked around for a moment, to find the missing duck, as well. When something very shocking caught his eye. "Angelwing!" He called out. "Come back!"
Panicked a bit, Canard snapped his head in the direction, and what he saw made his heart stop. '...No…!' Danielle was already sprinting toward the blazing building!
