Chapter Four

Kagome looked at her feet. Wiggling her toes around as she eyed the two hands around her ankles. Looking back up at the shoe aisle, she smiled and pointed at a pair of white sneakers. "Those!"
Shota nodded, "we will get some socks too, and then after we finish up at City Hall, we can go do some shopping for clothes and other necessities."
"Okay!"

"D-18"
Kagome tapped her new pair of white sneakers on the ground with a smile firmly on her face. Sitting on a seat silently beside Shota, her eyes played with the laces of her new shoes as she watched them bounce to and fro with her movements.
"Nng~"
"Shh, hush, hush, little one."
Looking up, she stared curiously ahead at a woman holding a baby.
"Nngaa~ ahhhh! AhhhH~"
The mother looked flustered as she tried to soothe her child in a calm tenor but to no avail. The child continued to cry; heartache settled heavily in the waiting room's ambiance, followed by judgmental stares from those around watching.
"Nngaa!"
Still tapping her shoes on the ground, Kagome finally stopped and jumped down from her seat. Shota looked over at her in surprise as she strolled up to the woman and her infant child, her hand touching the woman's arm and taking her by surprise as she peered up and over the bundle of blankets holding the baby. "What's wrong with her?"
"O-oh...mn, she's tired."
"Naanngga nngaah~"
"..." Kagome brought a hand up and placed it gently on the infants' head. Running her fingers softly along the top of her head as if she were a kitten, petting it ever so softly. "Lullaby, and goodnight, in the sky stars are bright, may the moons, silvery beams, bring you sweet dreams~."
"Nngaa...nng...mn.."
~Close your eyes now and rest,
may these hours be blessed.
Till the sky's bright with dawn,
when you wake with a yawn.~
"An...yah..."
Shota watched as a yawn settled on the baby's lips, sleepy eyes dancing as it struggled to stay awake. He was left feeling completely enamored by this girls' quirk for not the first time. Shota listened to Kagome lull the baby to sleep, enjoying the serene calm she offered with her voice. The baby was affected, but it also eased his mind and took from his shoulders the stress of his job.
~Lullaby, and goodnight,
you are mother's delight,
She'll protect you from harm,
and you'll wake in her arms.~
Kagome lifted her hand carefully from the soft brown tuft of hair she'd been petting and smiled giddily down at the baby. "Is that good?"
The mother was in a state of shock as she looked over her sleeping child. "You have such a beautiful quirk. It..." she looked up at who she assumed to be the girl's father, "it is a quirk, right?"
"It is. From my understanding, Kagome has a vocal command quirk that works when she sings a melody."
Smiling, she looked down at the girl, "you'll be quite the hero when you get older. Am I right to assume that you're a fan of Present Mic?"
"Present Mic?" Kagome shook her head, "I don't know that one."
"Oh? Then who is your hero?"
Thinking about it, she smiled and pointed, "he is."
Shota turned his head away as quickly as her hand had come up. A round of awes could be heard echoing in the room from countless women as he closed his eyes. Fighting desperately, the blush that tried to settle on his cheeks.
"D-19."
Shota lifted the paper he held and stood up. Reaching a hand out to Kagome, he listened as the small girl ran over to him before taking his much larger hand in hers.
"Farewell, little one."
Kagome waved to the mother as she and Shota left the waiting room towards the back, where there was a row of windows. When they passed the windows and tellers and continued through a door, her eyes widened as she took in the important-looking people standing around.
"Eraserhead, it's been a while!"
Kagome scrunched her nose up at the name which the man behind the desk called Shota.
"Heh, yeah. No reason as of late to come in here." Shota sat down, and Kagome climbed onto the seat beside him.
"And now?" The heavy-set man behind the desk looked curiously at the girl across from him.
"I'd like to adopt Kagome, but I need to fill out the paperwork first. Before you ask, she's not tied to an orphanage. I found her out on the streets on her own."
...wow. Well...I mean," scratching his head and closing his eyes as he heaved a heavy sigh, "you want a kid? Do you understand the responsibilities? I mean, she's not a cat..."
"I'm aware of the difference between a child and a cat."
"It's a nearly impossible feat for Heroes to adopt." The man opened his drawer and shuffled through the files inside. Pulling a collection of forms out, he thumbed through them to ensure he had them all before straightening them and laying them down on his desk. Pausing, he looked up at Shota, "which is why, I'm assuming, you came to me."
"Why can't Heroes adopt?"
Turning their eyes to Kagome, the girl listened keenly to the two as the conversation had to do with her. Fidgeting in her seat and toying with the braided leather of the belt around her waist, she kept quiet as she waited for an answer.
"Heroes are busy. With fighting villains that appear when they please, their schedule revolves around the people they've sworn to protect. Raising a child is, therefore, impossible."
"What if they have a child?"
"...excuse me?"
"Aren't they raising a child then? Why is a birth child different than an adopted child? Or would you have the hero give up his own kid?"
Shota's eyes widened, and he turned to the man across f om him. "I do believe she just won her case."
"She smart, very smart. Reminds me of you, if I'm being perfectly honest. Read through these, and I'll tell you where to sign as you go."
Shota sighed; how he hated paperwork. However, he had known that there would be a bit of it when he'd decided to take Kagome in as his. He still hated paperwork. Shota glanced at Kagome from the corner of his eyes and gave a barely noticeable smile before he got to work on the stack of papers before him. Even if he disliked it, he was sure that the girl beside him would be worth every signature he'd be forced to sign today. He'd bet his life on it. She was already blossoming in his chest. He feared for the future and his growing adoration for the girl.
Kagome reached forward and pointed at a wooden bear, "can I play with this?"
"...no..."
"Then this?" Her finger moved to a red race car.
"No."
"You have a lot of toys, though. Why not share?"
"They're not toys. They're collectibles."
"..." she didn't care for his answer and turned her attention away from him. Pulling her feet into the chair and sat atop them as she curled in on herself. Blocking out the chill of the office and warming herself up with her own body heat.
"Those toys are special to him, so you should respect his wishes if he doesn't want anyone touching them, Kagome," Shota said while initialing a small box and turning a page.
"...kaaaay."
He felt bad for bringing her along. He just knew she would be bored to tears in a few hours. 'I'll take her shopping after this, and we can pick up some more clothes and some toys. That should make it up to her.' Another page, another signature, another agreement to take on a living being in his home and life.
