During his time in prison, Bob grew to hate two little words: "Lights out." After that, Bob would either be kept awake by the snores of some uncouth cellmate, or by his own miserable thoughts.
He remembered how much Gino hated going to bed. The boy would cry and scream, or sometimes even kick. Bob and Francesca would need to sing him to sleep with this little song about fireflies. The song was Bob and Francesca's alone; they'd made it up one night when Bob caught a firefly for his love. Francesca had talked about how she used to try and catch the bugs as a little girl, but had never succeeded. She'd barely contained her delight when Bob caught the firefly...the second one, that is. He'd accidentally squashed the first firefly he tried to catch. An insignificant little firefly was Bob's one successful kill.
There wasn't much light in Bob's life anymore. "Lights out" only reminded him of that.
