Alex was woken to something cold being pressed to her chest, making the girl jerk from the chill, she was pushed back into position, the freezing round thing being put to her heart again, after a moment it was removed. Slowly her eye fluttered open, a woman was staring down at her, with a white coat on and stethoscope around her neck.
"Ah! Good morning!" A lady in her mid to late 20's greeted, when she noticed Alex looking up at her. She was pretty, fair skinned, with friendly warm chocolate eyes, a brown braid holding her hair in place, though the tips had been dyed a pastel pink.
The girl sat up, looking at the woman with slightly red cheeks, confused and embarrassed.
"W.. who?" Alex stammered out dumbly.
The woman smiled brightly introducing herself "I'm Tamatha, the Whitebeard pirates head doctor... or rather the only fully trained doctor..."
"OH! HEY AL!" Came a cheerful voice, Haruta had arrived, they were followed by Namur who was helping them carry some trays of food. The Fishman had a bored expression, slightly tired eyes slide over, noticing Alex sat up, he burst into a huge smile full of sharp teeth. "Hi Alex, how are you this morning? We brought you some food."
The girl opened her mouth, only nothing came out, her brain had frozen at the smell of breakfast. Her eye fixed on the pile of fresh beauty, at some point food had started looking like some heavenly blessing, the more time she spent trying to survive on her own.
Namur snorted, looking rather amused as he placed the tray in front of the drooling younger kid, her face lit brightly. "Okay, Tam how is she?"
As soon as the tray was on the bed, Alex dug in wildly, stuffing her mouth full, though was stopped half way through her second bagel by the doctor lady. "Whoa, steady on! Slow down, you haven't eaten in a while. Remember to chew, your stomach isn't gonna be able to cope with this all at once."
The woman simply stood up, holding it over her head out of Alex's reach. The girl froze, suddenly unsure how to proceed, so she just sat there looking up at the tray longingly. She was so hungry... but she supposed having food given to her for free was too good to be true.
The blonde's body was sore, though she did feel better than- when was that, did that even happen? There was no way... it had to be some weird dream...
But Alex was staring at Namur and Haruta arguing, the doctor was writing something on a clip board... the doctor... Alex's eye widened as her brain finally understood what was happening.
I'M ON WHITEBEARD'S SHIP! THAT'S WHAT THAT DOCTOR LADY SAID! THEN THAT WASN'T SOME CRAZY DREAM AFTER ALL.
The girl had been so hungry, so completely staving that the animal part of her had just decided to take over again. She hadn't even registered what was even happening or being said to her.
I'm so stupid! Soon enough Alex was caught up in her own thoughts, too busy freaking out and wondering what she was supposed to do now.
"Well she seems perfectly fine, make sure she takes it easy, so no crazy stunts, especially with Pops out of commission today. We want to make sure he stays asleep, so I'd rather you guys were out of the apprentice cabin and doing something else." The doctor lady told Namur, Alex looked like she was having some kind of crisis and Haruta just didn't listen.
"Yeah I got it, I'll make sure to keep them out of trouble." The fishman reassured, looking over at his younger siblings tired half-lidded stare in place. Tam patted him on the shoulder sympathetically, before clicking her fingers in front of the red-head's face.
"Haruta! Haruta, look at me!" The kid looked up, watching her fingers clicking. "Yeah?"
"I don't want you anywhere near dad's room today, I don't want to see you within ten foot of his door. You stay quiet, no shouting or banging in here. You hear me?" Tam uttered sternly, only for the 13 year old to frown and a second later ask "What were you saying, I was thinking about the stegosaurus I wanna make, the T-rex looks lonely.."
"Do not wake Pops up!" Tamatha hissed, trying very hard not to scream as their father was sleeping in the room next door.
"Why? What if we need him?" Haruta whined loudly, making Tam's face scrunch up.
"Pops hasn't slept for a fucking week, you leave him alone! We have so many freaking siblings that I'm sure you can ask one of them to help!" The brunette said, very close to losing her cool and shouting, so Namur intervened grabbing Haruta by their scarf and pulling them out of their room. Snatching Alex by the hood on her jumper on the way out, she was still looking mortified. Though he popped his head back in, stealing a plate full of croissants and took off before Tam could say anything.
When they reached a safe distance Namur released his siblings, Alex flopped onto the wooden deck in a heap, still appearing to be panicked, and Haruta had bounced over to the barrier, now gawking over at the view.
Fishman Island stood before them in all it's glory, coral reaching up to the 'sky', light pouring down from the mother tree Eve's roots. Water bluer and more clear then any sea Namur had ever seen, it was a beautiful sight, he was home... at least it had been his home once.
"Holy shit! This is awesome! This is way cooler then I remember!" The red-head cheered leaning over the barrier, letting their head fall back to grin at their brother and sister.
"To be fair that was because you were new. Good morning." Izo had appeared smiling slyly, his hair and make-up immaculate as per usual. His kimono was a lovely shade of pink, cherry blossoms covered the bottom half in a swirl pattern.
"Yeah, I guess that's true. Like we got Namur a couple of days later and we were plotting to throw Pops overboard." Haruta snorted, receiving a chuckle and shake of the head from Izo.
"Pfffft, Yeah! Oh! Hey! Actually isn't this the first time we've been here for a year and a half?" Namur questioned, staring over to Izo for confirmation.
"I believe so, its going to be your first time in the New World, you're certainly in for a treat." The cross-dresser leaned against the railing, lifting his eyes towards the surface with a smile.
"I'm gonna be seeing it for the first time properly too, I was preoccupied with being kidnapped to really notice." Haruta pondered, finger to their lips in thought.
"You were born there though, so you saw it first hand Haru" The shark boy pointed out, Izo sighed "While that is true, I was technically born in the New World but knew nothing outside the borders, Wano is closed to the whole world. So it was quite shocking seeing the vast seas and strange islands for the first time."
"Also I didn't see shit in that stuffy old mansion, too busy having to learn how to dance and be some noble dip shit." They said disgusted, sticking their tongue out to emphasise it.
"I suppose so." Namur agreed, jumping onto the barrier with his arms crossed, relaxing, he turned his eyes down to look at Alex. She was still sat there in the same heap as before, however she was fixated on the plate of croissants that he'd left in front of her.
"You know those are for you, right? We've already eaten this morning" The Fishman told her, yet the girl continued to stare at the pastries in hesitation, as if she was expecting someone to shout Sike and snatch the plate away.
Haruta frowned puzzled, they crouched down, patting Alex on the back in an attempt to reassure her. "Go on Al, aren't you hungry?"
Alex nodded in response to Haru's question, yet still made no move to dig in. It was all rather weird, Namur didn't get it, she'd been stuffing her face just fine until Tam had taken away her tray and now she refused to eat when she was given something? She had no trouble chowing down on his melted chocolate bar the other day either.
"You drank anything today brat?" Izo asked in an aloof and uncaring manner, which the shark boy guessed probably wasn't how he really felt, he did care, just in his own strange way. He was still sticking to his guns about the old lady thing, then having to jump in after the girl when she had gone and attacked the Sea King. Apparently the former samurai was in the sea as soon as their little sister went under without a second thought, which just showed how much Izo actually cared. He was most likely more upset over her stupidity then the name calling, Namur figured that he just didn't want to admit it.
"No, Al hasn't yet." Haruta replied in place of the girl, they put their hands on their hips, frowning at Alex which seemed to make her shrink more. "I'll go fetch you some! Now eat before I force feed you!" With that threat the red-head took off, leaving Izo and Namur staring at Alex, who currently seemed to be trying to become part of the deck.
"They're not kidding... they will force feed you. I'd eat it before they come back" Namur gave her a sympathetic smile as he jumped back down from his perch on the ship's railing, coming to sit down crossed legged in front of the smaller teenager, he pushed the plate of croissants towards her.
Alex glanced towards Izo suspiciously, the cross dresser was still leant against the wooden barrier, watching the girl with a slight raised eyebrow. It suddenly hit the Fishman what the issue was, it was because Izo was there, Alex didn't want to eat in front of him. She was worried he was going to take her food again, just like Tam had done, which was something Namur kinda understood, he remembered how untrusting he once was.
He could recall how hungry he used to get, how his 'father' would take his food when he was drunk and watch him cry while he and some of his gambling buddies would piss themselves laughing... geez Namur really hoped he wouldn't bump into the man.
"Don't worry, Izo isn't going to steal your food. Tam only did that because she was worried you'd eat too fast and choke or something" The shark teen reassured her, giving her a toothy pointed grin. Slowly Alexandra glanced between him and Izo, then finally picked up a croissant, taking a hesitate bite.
"Don't worry brat, I don't even like those little devil pastries. Too dry and crunchy. They make me cough, then I have to touch up my make-up again." The former Samurai said with a slightly disgusted edge.
The girl seemed to relax a little, though she did seem to make an effort eating at a reasonable pace, not stuffing it in like last time.
Haruta had come back with something to drink, nodding gruffly, pleased to see that their sister had started eating, they sat down next to Namur, placing the large mug of juice next to the girl.
Alex's one-eyed gaze slid to the juice, then back up to Izo, who was filling his nails, though if the Fishman had to guess, was most likely a bad attempt at seeming disinterested. If he wanted to do his nails properly he would've gone back to his cabin, also considering that they had been painted blue but the filing was chipping way the polish. Namur would have to say his guess was right.
The blonde took the juice, taking a sniff, she immediately revolted with a jolt and a screwed up face. Eye watering, yet she still took a sip before either he or Haru could say anything. She swallowed it looking grossed out, which had the red-head snatch it out of her hand, causing Alex to flinch then turn her eye to the ground in shame...
"Sorry..." She mumbled, bowing her head apologetically towards them both, which even Izo looked bothered by. Though as soon as he noticed Namur watching him, he went back to ruining his nail job more. The shark rolled his eyes, before putting his hand in front of Haruta's chest, stopping them from throttling their sister violently.
"Why the hell are you apologising idiot!?" The ginger yelled angrily which probably wasn't going to help the situation, he knew why they were mad, but shouting at Alex wasn't going to do them any favours. Which indeed made the girl shrink more, this time only she looked confused, her brow turned up casting a worried glance in their direction.
Namur whacked Haru over the head with his palm, which earned him some kind of outraged harpy screech, along with a punch to the underside of his jaws from them. Izo sighed fed-up with the growing squabble between his younger siblings. "Oh will you two give it a rest!" The cross-dresser snapped, prying them apart as they tried to continue fighting.
Alex was staring dumbfounded, still sat with a twisted grimace of concern. While Namur grumbled, annoyance pooling off him, but he flopped back down onto the plank floor with his arms crossed, his jaw throbbing a little from the punch.
"You don't have to drink it if you don't like it, Haruta is just pissed that you didn't say anything. Though they didn't need to bloody scream like that." A new voice sounded from the behind the little group, a man came strolling over with a relaxed smile, a crescent scar was curving around his right eye, his long brown hair was tied neatly into a braid, Thatch had obviously come to check if Alex had eaten enough.
"Yeah! But Al-" Haruta was cut off as Thatch spoke again, this time it was firmer and more serious. The chef was one of the very few that the ginger actually listened to.
"Sib listen, she's a street kid, it's normal... when you live in those kinds of conditions you drink and eat whatever you can, regardless if you like it or not. It's rule one of survival, either you take what you're given, if you don't you might starve or die of thirst-"
Haruta was frowning, listening for once, they kept giving the blonde girl sideways glances, slowly their face falling from angry to guilty as the brunette continued to explain.
"-You're a blinking picky kid, you have no problem wasting perfectly good food, but that's cause you grew up with that privilege. Alex probably didn't, so you shouting at her about it is only gonna make her feel like she did something wrong..."
"Oh... I didn't mean it like that, it's just that you don't have force yourself to drink something you think is gross. Like you could've just said so ya know, same with food, if you don't like something you don't have make yourself eat it. You're not gonna starve or die from being thirsty anymore,. You been through some shit-" Haruta paused nodding at the girl's missing eye before continuing "- so you get to be like be okay now, you can eat whatever you want and nobody's ever gonna stop you again."
"Within reason of course... but you will never stave again in my care. Though you steal anymore food out of my kitchen again, I will personally kick your ass!" Thatch warned, his face darkening in a evil-eyed glare. Alex was silent, expression having gone oddly blank, Namur was wondering if she'd even heard him. The brunette sighed, closing his eyes for a moment, before his normal carefree attitude came back.
"Okay! Now we have that cleared up, I'm Thatch, fourth division commander and head chef of this fine ship, nice to meet you officially" The brunette grinned, crouching down in front of the blonde girl offering a hand shake, which she fixed her blue eye on, then without warning went straight for it- with her teeth! The sharp snap of jaws rang out as Thatch pulled his hand out of the way just avoiding being bitten.
"WHAT THE FUCK KID?" The chef shrieked as he fell backwards, landing on his back looking as taken back as Namur did, though it shouldn't have been that much of a shock considering he'd seen her bite Pops... However it'd been completely out of the blue. It almost seemed out of character, from what the Fishman had seen, Alex was sort of quiet, nervous and shy.
Not aggressive...
Then again maybe she was? He and Haruta had been shooed off whenever they'd try to see Alex on her rock, mostly to avoid having Haru asking inappropriate questions that would of made the girl riled up more.
Nevertheless, he'd heard from multiple crewmates that she was a hostile rude kid with a sharp tongue, stubbornly refusing to listen to anything anyone had to say, literally telling them to piss off and leave her to die in the middle of the ocean.
"You just threatened me! I ain't gonna be all friendly to a commander of the Whitebeard pirates! So shove off you overgrown gel jar! I don't want nothin' to do with ya!" Alex spat venomously, her pupil having gone into a cat-like slit, a large sharp mouthful of carnivorous fangs were bared.
Thatch jumped to his feet with flushed cheeks, reaching up to dust himself off nonchalantly, seemly embarrassed by the stumble, his hand brushed over his sword's hilt. Alex leapt up, bristling, she glanced out beyond the ship's confines.
"But you were fine with Marco last night?" Namur asked confused, he was the first division commander and yet she'd seemed more nervous than angry. Alex had even answered the Phoenix's questions without much trouble, she was a bit rude, sure, but she certainly hadn't thought of going for him at any point.
The girl didn't answer, instead abruptly grabbing the last pastry, pounced onto the barrier, then disappeared out of sight as she dropped off the ship.
"Al! Wait for me!" Haruta yelled immediately going after their sister, swinging themselves over the edge of Moby to land in the dock and dashed off after Alex. Namur sighed, looking between a confused Thatch and a 'trying not to care' Izo.
"I'll go keep them out of trouble..." With that he went after his younger siblings, with less speed and even less energy. What a pain...
