Molly awoke the next morning startled. She eyed her surroundings with narrowed eyes and briefly wondered where she was. It took her a good few moments to remember the events that had taken place the night before and found her head snapping to the right. The space beside her was, unsurprisingly, empty. She let her eyes close for a moment, stretching her arms out in front of her before she tilted her head back and eyed the sofa. Her brows furrowed slightly when the sofa was bare.
Jacob was no longer where she had left him. The blanket that had covered him was wrinkled and kicked down the sofa while the pillow his head was resting on still had the indent of his small head. Molly took a moment to look at the spot before she eyed the door. With a quick sigh, she pushed herself to her feet and grabbed her boots, sliding them on her feet before she moved towards the door and slid out the room.
She walked down the white corridor, humming to herself as she moved. Once she had made it down the initial hallway, she turned and followed the sound of voices until she came out into the large kitchen the group had occupied last night.
Molly surveyed the room quickly, taking note of who was in the room and who wasn't. She could smell food cooking as she moved towards the table, noticing her child almost instantly. She made her way towards him and the free chair on his left side.
Jacob took note of his mother and grinned, placing the pancake he was eating back onto the plate as he waved slightly. "Hi mumma."
"Hi baby." Molly muttered, pressing her lips to the top of Jacob's head before pulling the chair beside him out and sliding into it. "Did you come here on your own?"
Jacob shook his head, chewing his pancake as though his headshake was all the answer he needed. Molly frowned, her eyes fluttering towards Carol who was sat opposite her, Sofia beside her. Carol mouth the answer she already knew. Daryl.
Molly nodded, grabbing the pitcher of orange juice in the middle of the table along with an empty cup. She poured herself a glass just as Jenner entered the room and made his way over to where the coffee was being made.
"Mornin'." Jenner greeted everyone.
A round of mornings were threw back at him. Before Jenner even had the chance to take a sip of his coffee, Dale spoke up. "Doctor, I don't mean to slam you with questions first thing b-"
"-but you will anyway."
"We didn't come here for the eggs." Andrea was the one to fill in what Dale would've no doubt taken a good two minutes to say.
"No... I don't think you did." Jenner chuckled to himself. Almost as quickly as the smile was put on his face, it disappeared. He nodded for a moment before making his way towards the door. "If you'd follow me."
Molly watched as everyone stood up from the table and followed after him. She weighed her options for a moment before turning to look down at Jacob who was already looking up at her.
"Finish your food, Jake." Molly smiled, nursing her orange juice in her hand as Jacob nodded and continued eating his pancakes.
"Is this where we gonna be stayin'?" Jacob asked once he had finished the last of his food.
Molly turned to look at him, watching as he looked around the large kitchen space in slight interest while swinging his legs on the wooden chair. He took another look around before turning to look up at Molly with a raised brow.
She shrugged, not entirely sure what was happening overall. "I couldn't tell you." She said, resting her elbow on the table while resting her chin on her hand. She grinned down at Jacob who was quick to smile back. "Should we catch up with everyone else and see what's going on?"
"Yeah!"
Molly pushed her chair out and stood up, pulling Jacobs chair and holding his hand while he slid off. Once he was settled on both feet, she let go of his hand and made her way to the open archway, looking back to insure that Jacob was following her.
Molly entered the room and immediately regretted her decision to do so. She came to a stop as her eyes widened on the screen that seemed to be projecting an x-ray of someone's death. She thanked anyone who was listening that Jacob was to small to see over the consoles and witness what was happening on the screens.
Molly made eye contact with Glenn who looked slightly grim at what he was seeing. Before anyone could speak, lights began to show up on the screen once more. Molly watched intently, tilting her head as she rested her hand on Jacobs head who had gripped her leg and wrapped his arms around it.
"Is it... Restarting the brain?" Molly found herself asking.
"No." Jenner turned to say, shaking his head slightly. "Just the brain stem. Basically, it gets them up and moving."
"But... They're not alive?" Rick questioned.
Jenner turned to look at the man, shrugging as he motioned to the large screen with one of his hands. "You tell me."
"It's nothing like before." Rick said after taking another look. "Most of that brain is all... Dark."
"Dark?" Jenner questioned while nodding slightly. "Lifeless... Dead... The frontal lobe the neo-cortex, the human part? That doesn't come back but the you part is just a shell... Just a shell driven by mindless ins-"
"Oh god..." Carol's voice interrupted Jenner, echoing around the room as soon as a bright light filled the screen, the motion of something splitting the brain being played. "What was that?"
Rather than Jenner answering, Andrea spoke up. "He shot his patient in the head... Didn't you?"
Jenner ignored her as he sighed and spoke up once more, this time, to VI. He demanded that she shut down the main screens and workstations. Molly didn't bother to wait around asking questions. Her main priority was Jacob who looked as though he hadn't had a clue as to what had gone on with the screen.
Molly, bending down a little and taking Jacob's arm from around her leg, held his hand in her own and turned around. She heard the others talking again behind her as she lead Jacob away.
"That's great, Jake." Molly told him when he showed her the drawing he had been doing on the table beside where she was sat on the sofa with her legs crossed and a book in her hands. The pair had ended up in the Rec room while the others continued to reach for answers Jenner clearly didn't have.
She couldn't be sure how long the two had sat in the room when Carol and Sophia fluttered in the room closely followed by Lori and Carl. Molly smiled politely before going back to her book and ignoring the laughs that began from Sophia and Carl who had quickly began playing a game of go fish.
Time seemed to pass by rather quickly and though she couldn't remember the last time she had actually sat down and read a book, Molly found herself three-quarters of the way through it.
The door opened when she had turned the page and Daryl walked in, eyeing the room for a quick moment before he moved to sit down on the sofa across from her. Lori and Carol eyed him for a moment before continuing on with what they were doing.
Jacob was quick to show of his drawing to Daryl, pointing out all the features he had drawn that he thought were the best. Molly watched Daryl carefully, her eyes hidden behind the forgotten book.
Daryl himself seemed to forget his traits of acting as though he cared for no one but himself as he nodded and listened to Jacob intently while even pointing out a few things on the paper and asking him about them.
When he looked up and caught Molly's gaze, she was quick to bring her book up and hid her eyes from sight. She cleared her throat and shook her head, beginning to try and find her space on the page once more.
Just as she had finally found it, Carl spoke up louder than he had been talking with Sophia. "Something wrong?" He asked Lori who had stood up and frowned, holding her hand against the air vent.
"Uh... Nothing." Lori trailed off before speaking up once more. "It's just... The air conditionings stopped." She shook her head and turned back to Carl, forcing a smile on her face as he watched on in mild interest.
Molly sat up straight and dropped the book to the floor when a weird sound erupted and the lights went out. She looked around with furrowed brows, trying to see through the semi-darkness.
Her first thought was to see if anyone had turned the light off. Upon further inspection, she could see that the light switch had not been touched. She frowned as Jacob all but ran towards her, climbing up on the sofa and sitting ever so close to her.
Daryl was the first to stand and leave the room. No doubt going to figure out just what was going on. Lori and Carol stood together, making a big deal out of the situation that was happening. Molly couldn't help but roll her eyes when the pair left the room, Carl and Sophia following closely.
"What goin' on?" Jacob spoke up when the lights flickered back on.
"I don't know..." Molly trailed off, shaking her head.
{Wow. This chapter was meant to be out AGES ago but believe it or not, the first copy was deleted so I had to re-write the whole thing. Its not as long as it once was because I wanted to get something out for you. I'm moving back to longer chapters}
