Author's Notes: This is the only time I am saying this; from here on out, the storyline will start to change and morphed as groups are merged in the coming chapters. And it will speed up the flow of the story and increase the drama that is going into this. And for those who have read the One-shot that inspired this multi-chapter story, you'll recognize this next chapter. So if you do not like that, I politely ask you to turn around and leave now because I don't see the point in you wasting your time and mine.
He stood there looking down the dusty street, feeling glad to be back in the small village inside Hex Food World hid away in the Gourmet World. A place where others like him lived in peace. It had been three years since Spice had struck the surface, and he decided to return to this place, his second home, and his restaurant Tengu Castle.
Letting a sigh escape as he shrugged his shoulder to readjust his bag and started walking towards the village entrance. A small smirk playing across his lips as he began to see its inhabitants going about their daily routines. Though as he stepped under the arches of the gate, he noted that quite a few of them stopped and stared at him, with mixed reactions.
Not one to care about what others thought of him, he continued. He had a purpose, and that was to check in with the pervy old hermit. It was only right and respectful to let him know he was back in the village, on top of the fact that Toriko and the others would be eventually making their way to the village within the next year. Their visit would cause a stir, and he was sure the old man would send Mappy to guide them there, which would be awesome to see their reactions to the small frogman.
He was chuckling as he turned a corner only to come to a stop when someone ran into his legs — cocking an eyebrow as he looked down at the tiny figure sprawled out on the ground blinking up at him through raven-colored hair with distinctive blue eyes. Eyes that made a memory he had one his best to suppress rise to the surface of a night that he had convinced himself was nothing more than a dream. But the way those blue eyes widened as they looked back at him, while the pale skin took on a faint rosy tint across their cheeks and bridge of their nose, while petal-pink full lips fell partially open. Letting him know that they recognized him as well as while sitting at his feet staring up.
Snorting as he bent at the waist, narrowing his eyes, arm swinging out, grasping the front of the cloak they were wearing, making sure to get a fist full of the pale green shirt underneath before jerking them up to his eye level, giving him an up-close and personal look at them. A mix of emotions rushing through him as he curled his lip in a half-snarl as he gave a low dark chuckle at their shock.
"Well, lookie what I found, a human in a village full of monsters. I wonder what you are doing here, girlie? Come to fuck around with these innocent's who have chosen to stay away from your kind?"
As he bit out his words, slightly shaking the woman, whose face was slowly morphing into a mask of barely contained rage at his words. But she didn't do anything to retaliate against him. It was when pain exploded from his calf. Brunch had to fight to keep from screaming as he whipped his head around and glanced down, only to go still at seeing a head of black hair that curled, so it was barely brushing against red-skinned shoulders as Blue eyes just like those of the woman he held in his hands stared angrily up at him. Time seemed to stop at that moment as he kept watch on those blue eyes.
"Bruka, you stop that this instant, young lady."
The moment the words were spoken, a voice he recalled as low, sultry and tempting, now held a commanding tone that demanded others listen. Drawing his attention back to the raven-haired woman, knowing his eyes were wide as he stared back at her. The pain and love that flickered across that face as he looked at it left Brunch confused and utterly horrified as his mind tried to make sense of things. Then the feeling of teeth being detached from his leg had him looking back at the young girl, Baruka, as she snarled at him.
"But... he was hurting you... That's bad... he is like the other red-man."
"Enough, Bruka. You were supposed to be at Gigi's. Now, go home, young lady."
But I... yes, mom-ma."
Brunch looked back at the girl to see her turn and run to the other side of the street. Some instinct or another had him moving to go after the girl, as he released his hold on the woman.
Not even getting two steps before he felt his pants start to slip down his hips before he went tumbling to the ground as pressure was applied to his ankles. Brunch barely caught himself before getting a face full of dirt. Twisting his body to look at what happened, he saw a familiar black leather strip around his ankles binding them together as the end was held by a pair of small, delicate-looking, petite hands. Trailing his eyes up those hands and arms to look at the woman's face, he saw those blue eyes flashing dangerously at him in a warning. Dragging his eyes back down to her body and up his legs, seeing his pants halfway down his hips.
"Fucking really?! My belt... you... just... how the fucking hell did you get it from my waist without me..."
He ranted before trailing off as a hazy, but still, vividly colored memory played in his head of a similar situation. A situation that had led to something that had been extraordinarily pleasing, even if it was hazy. Now that same trick was restraining him from chasing after the child as his instincts dictated it.
"Lady, do you require help?"
"She ain't no lady."
"I beg to differ there. I can ascertain Kagome is a Lady."
Growling low in his throat as he felt the pressure on his legs loosen as he watched his belt hitting the dirt reached before Brunch looked over to who had spoken, only to go very still where he lay. An amber gaze was holding his, and if he wasn't mistaken, that looked rather amused at his current predicament while daring him to speak thusly again. While in his arms was that black-haired, blue-eyed little girl with red skin like his own. But now that he was getting a good look at her back, he saw small little black wings folded tightly against her bareback; on the girl's forehead was a small dark purple crescent moon.
What had him blinking was the raven-haired girl stepping up next to the man who'd spoken and challenged him; he saw on her forehead was a magenta crescent moon, marking her for who she was as well — bringing a hand up to face as he let his head drop back to the ground. He wondered which god, good or evil, he pissed off in a previous life and this one. Because it finally hit him completely, for one night of drunken revelry, he was here now, three years later finding out the consequences of his actions. And he was damned for it.
Kagome knew that there would be a day when she'd come face to face with him again. But she hadn't figured it would be this soon, not that it was soon. A bit over three years since Spice had fallen to the earth, practically destroying it. Her daughter, of course, had to be difficult like all three-year-olds. Though she was glad, Bruka was alive, healthy, and active like she was, even if it tested her patience to the limit.
Now, though, Kagome stared down at the man on the ground who had half his face covered with a hand. It took all her self-control to not oggle his body in that prone position, as she fought to keep the memories of that night buried deep in her subconscious. This was not how she pictured Bruka meeting her father either. Yeah, Bruka was still very protective of her, to the point of violence. From her daughter's point of view, it had to look like he would hurt her when he picked her up like that.
"Momma?"
At the sound of her daughter's voice, Kagome looked away from Brunch and to her daughter, who was peeking at her from under her dark fringe. Sighing and smiling, Kagome moved away from Sesshomaru, lifting her arms. Glad when Bruka was put in them.
"Yes, Bruka?" She asked, as her daughter buried her face into her neck, as her little wings rustled against her back.
"Sesshy says I need to apologize to you... and the red-man."
This had Kagome glancing up at her long time friend, who gave a small, curt nod. The look in his eyes said it all, and she knew she'd have to follow through. While her daughter may have done it in defense of her, Kagome knew that Bruka shouldn't have intervened. This made Kagome look weak and unable to handle her shit to the others in the town. It was a village of monsters, after all.
"Yes, you do, Bruka," she stated softly, using her free hand to stroke at her daughter's hair. "You have been told you cannot attack people you think are harming me. I am an adult and able to protect myself if I have to. And besides, biting a stranger, who just wandered into the town from the Gourmet World, is like eating those poisonous berries eight months ago. You don't know what you are putting in your mouth."
There was smothered snickering coming from the crowd that had gathered and encircled them. While Kagome caught Sesshomaru's eyes shining in silent mirth, an annoyed, slightly-angry growl came from the ground. This was her way of paying him back for acting like a savage and picking her up, humiliating her as he had because of his anger.
"Then, mom-ma, I am sorry, I was a brat, and that's a no-no," Bruka said before wiggling in her arms.
Kagome bent down and set her daughter on the ground. When Bruka had turned to face Brunch, who was flicking his eyes from her to their daughter and back again, Kagome wrapped her arms around her daughter protectively. Why she had no clue, Kagome was well aware that Brunch wouldn't harm her, not with all these people around and Sesshomaru right next to them.
"I am sorry for biting you because you were bullying my mom-ma. But you acted like the old red-man who comes to visit Gigi Hermit. And I don't like my mom-ma sad."
Her daughter's words were heartfelt, and it made Kagome feel pride that she was doing a decent(ish) job raising her daughter. Though she observed Brunch as he lay there looking up at Bruka in confusion and wonder. Kagome knew that he had to be putting two and two together in his head.
"Eh, apology accepted, brat. But why do you call a human woman mother?"
Kagome felt a hand grasp her shoulder just as she felt her left eye begin to twitch. Apparently, she was wrong in thinking he had any rationalizing skills at all and insulted her daughter in the process. Before Bruka could respond, Kagome scooped her back into her arm and stood. Letting her gaze meet Brunches, she saw him flinch back at her anger. Kagome knew she wasn't leaking any Reiki or Horeiki since Bruka wasn't complaining or letting her own seep out.
"I am going to return home, it is growing late, and I don't wish to keep you Sesshomaru from finishing your meeting with Dharma," She muttered. "I hope to see you for dinner. I am making your favorite."
"Thank you, Kagome. I will be there as soon as possible."
Doing a half-curtsy to Sesshomaru, purposely showing a slight submissive and differential treatment to him, was playing with fire. And then she turned and walked away, feeling eyes boring into her back. There would be questions asked that she didn't want to answer in the middle of town. Nor explain to the damn man that was on the ground behind her. Nope, all Kagome wanted to do was get home and try to calm the hammering in her chest because she'd be damned if she would admit that she felt a magnetism towards Brunch.
