Hope you all are doing well. Time is running out for you to vote in the poll, so don't forget to vote! (It's a LOT closer than I thought it would be)
Firstly I'd like to give a shout-out to Ao3 user: thenightslayer he wrote a gift fic for me that involved this Luz and cannon Luz meeting each other, it's not very long and you can find it on Ao3 if you want to read it. Thank you!
Next I'd like to thank drakewind he gave me an idea for this one-shot that I thought was pretty good. I had already planned to do this one, but I liked his suggestion involving the picture. So thank you for that!
As I've said to some of you, my only real problem with Season 3 of Amphibia up to this point is that we didn't learn anything about the other girls parents. Also it seems as though Anne's parents never went to the police or reported her missing (which could actually get them in legal trouble) So this one shot is kind of an attempt to fix that. I wish we had learned something about what happened to both the Wus and the Waybrights as once again I'm kind of speculating here. Stuff I say here may turn out to be wrong, but I suppose at this point, I'll hand wave it by saying this is what happened in this Alternate Universe (the story is already different so I guess a few more changes won't hurt ).
Hope you all are staying safe!
The Night the Girls Disappeared
"Are you certain that's all you remember?" asked Detective Katherine Ventura as she looked into Camila Noceda's sullen face.
"I'm sure," answered Ms. Noceda in a tone that hovered between fear and despair, "the last thing Luz told me was that she was going to meet up with her friend Marcy after school at a local library. Then she said she was going to meet her other friends later. At about 6pm I texted her asking her how much longer she was going to be, and never received a response. After awhile I tried calling her, and she didn't answer. Eventually I called the police when I got scared she might be missing."
"I see," said the detective as she finished taking Ms. Noceda's statement, "let me give you my card and if you think of anything then feel free to give me a call. Any detail no matter how small it may seem, may help us in finding your daughter."
"Thank you Detective Ventura," said Camila rising up out of her seat, before she made her way to the door though she asked, "please, tell me the truth, what are the chances that you find my daughter alive and unharmed?"
The women took a long pause before replying, "I've been on the force about five years now. The recovery rate for missing persons varies from state to state, though I will say for people under age 18 the odds are not good." The detective saw Camila's eyes fall upon hearing this.
"But I will say in this circumstance it doesn't seem as though your daughter or any of the other children were kidnapped, which does give us hope," said the detective, "I think the most likely scenario is that they ran away together. If we can find at least one of the missing girls we will likely be able to find the other ones."
"I just…..I don't know what to do right now," said Camila her voice falling, "Luz is all I have, I can't lose her. I….I…."
"Senorita Noceda," began Detective Ventura speaking in Spanish, "vamos a hacer todo que podemos para encontrar su hija, tienes mi palabra."
Camilla perked up a bit hearing the detective speak Spanish to her.
"I'm a mother myself, and I can't imagine what you must be going through right now," said Detective Ventura, "If it's any consolation there are at least three other women in the next room who do understand what you're feeling, because they're feeling the exact same way right now. I think my colleagues are done interrogating them I promise to call you if there are any new developments in the case." With that the detective opened the door for Camilla and lead her out of the interrogation room and back out into the police station. As soon as Mae Boonchuy saw her she ran up to Camilla.
"Camilla," said Mae her voice barely above a whisper, "what did they ask you?"
"The same thing they asked you I think," answered Camila, "do you really think Luz, Anne, Sasha and Marcy ran away?"
"I…I….don't know what to think right now," replied Mae shaking, "Anne and I have had the occasional fight, but I never felt as though she was unhappy in the house. I can't imagine why she would run away."
"Luz was always very spirited and creative, she would do things that were seen as weird by other kids her age, but she started to calm down after she met Anne," said Camila, "I thought she was happy, why would she want to leave?"
"Honey should I go get the car?" asked a man coming up to Mae. He was taller than her but around her same age with a similar skin tone and short hair.
"Oh you must be Camila," said the man as he caught sight of her, "I'm Jeff, Anne's dad, I'm sorry we have to meet like this."
"Me too," said Camila, shaking Jeff's hand, "I'm still in shock over the whole thing."
"Jeff why don't you go get the car," began Mae, "I'll wait for you by-" before being interrupted.
"THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!" said a female voice. Mae, Jeff, and Camilla turned to see a tall blonde women emerging from one of the police interrogation rooms, yelling at a man.
"MY FAULT?!" replied a man in a sharp buisness suit, chasing after the women, "HOW IS THIS MY FAULT?"
"YOU'RE ALWAYS GONE! YOU'RE NEVER AROUND THE HOUSE!" screamed the women.
"YOU KNOW I HAVE TO GO OUT OF TOWN FOR WORK!" screamed the man, "I PROVIDE FOR YOU AND SASHA!"
"YOU'RE NEVER HOME! SASHA NEEDS A FATHER FIGURE IN HER LIFE! THAT'S WHY SHE RAN AWAY!" yelled the woman.
"MAYBE SHE RAN AWAY TO GET AWAY FROM YOU YELLING ALL THE TIME!" screamed the man leaving the wife in shock.
"Okay that's enough!" said Detective Ventura running over to try and restore order, "if the two of you want to have a shouting match then take it outside!"
"FINE WE'RE LEAVING!" screamed the women as she ran out the door her husband close behind.
Right as they left another interrogation room opened and an Asian couple walked out together. They seemed to be sad, but didn't talk or say anything as they left the room. They did glance briefly over at Camilla, Jeff, and Mae. They locked eyes with Mae for a second before continuing on their way, out of the police station.
"Was that the Wus?" asked Camilla to Mae. Mae nodded her head.
"They didn't talk to us while we were waiting," she said, "I wonder what's going on with them?"
"I'll go get the car then," said Jeff to his wife, "I'll meet you outside." With that he left leaving Mae and Camilla alone.
"I still can't believe this is happening," said Camilla barely keeping it together, "I keep hoping that this is some kind of nightmare and that I'll wake up and Luz will be right here."
"Today was Anne's birthday," said Mae shaking, "we had a party all set up for her, I was going to give her a bracelet I had as her first piece of real jewelry as a present. This was supposed to be a happy day…." as Mae trailed off she began crying unable to cope with the thought that Anne was gone. Camila came up to her and put her arm around her letting her cry and trying her best to stay strong. Though, before long she too started crying as well.
Was it something I did? Thought Camila, as she began sobbing, did Luz hate living with me that much? Camila and Mae held onto each other and just let their tears flow until they were done.
One Week Later
"So glad you could make it Ms. Noceda," said Detective Ventura as Camila sat down in the school's office, "we're just waiting for Mrs. Boonchuy and then we can-"
No sooner had she said this than Mae Boonchuy entered into the office in a hurry.
"Sorry I was at the restaurant when I got your call," explained Mrs. Boonchuy, "It's just me, Jeff is staying at the restaurant to run it while I come here."
"Are we the only ones?" asked Camila, "where are the Waybrights and the Wus?"
"Unfortuantly they didn't respond to our calls," clarified Detective Ventura, "but I don't think it will matter as much, I was told this only concerns Anne and Luz, not the other girls."
"So what is this about?" asked Mae.
"I was looking into possible reasons as to why your children may have run away and I may have found one," began Detective Ventura, "there is a teacher here who says she witnessed an incident between your daughters at a school dance a little while ago."
"Yes that's right," said a new voice entering the room, a large women with brown unkempt hair, that was already starting to gray, barged into the office, "I'm afraid your children are involved in sinful behavior."
"What?!" said both Mae and Camila at the same time.
Detective Ventura glared at the women, before speaking, "we don't need to start the conversation that way." She turned to the Mae and Camila, pausing for a long time not sure how to begin herself. Finally after thinking of the most delicate way to say it she began
"Listen…..were either of you aware that your daughters….might be…..gay?"
"What?!" said both Mae and Camila together again, there expression stuck between shock and sadness.
"I hate to bring this up," continued the Detective, "but we see it all the time in runaway cases. Kids come out to their parents about their sexuality, the parents react in anger, and the kid runs away because-"
"Well of course they should react in anger," interrupted Ms. Bryant, "it's unnatural and wrong, and it's against god's teaching."
"What are you talking about?" asked Mae, "no Anne, never told me she was gay, but I wouldn't have minded, I swear I wouldn't have been angry if I knew!"
"You wouldn't have been angry?" asked Ms. Bryant, "your daughter is living a sinful life, how can you abide-?"
"I'm asking for a reason," interrupted Detective Ventura putting her hand up to get Ms. Bryant to stop talking, "apparently Ms. Bryant here saw Luz kiss Anne while the two were dancing together."
"What, no, that's not what happened," said Camila trying to clarify, "Luz told me about this incident at the dance. It was actually a boy who kissed her while they were dancing."
"I'm afraid your child is lying to you Ms. Noceda," said Ms. Bryant smugly, "I saw what happened, and it wasn't just me there were other witnesses too."
"I've talked to other teachers as well as some students," added Detective Ventura, "I'm afraid Ms. Bryant's version of events is the correct one. But as I said, I want to know if there was any sort of tension at home because of that. It could be the reason why Luz and Anne ran away."
"No, Luz….has never told me she was gay," admitted Camila, "but I knew something was bothering her. I just didn't know what."
"Obviously your daughter was lying to you because she was ashamed," said Ms. Bryant loudly.
"I wouldn't have cared if Luz is gay," countered Camila, "I thought she would trust me enough to tell me something like that…." Camila trailed off not sure what else to say, she was in shock both at the fact that Luz had lied to her, but also shock that Luz might be gay. Though she wasn't ashamed of that at all. The idea that Luz wouldn't feel comfortable telling her something like this was what was truly bothering Camila, she all but zoned out and wasn't paying attention as the others continued to talk around her.
"I swear I didn't know," said Mae, "but looking back now, I remember Anne was acting weirdly after I picked her up from the dance. And on her birthday something was bothering her, as a mother I just knew. But even if Anne is gay I don't care about that! She's my daughter, I love her…. I just want her back…." Mae Boonchuy also began to trail off not knowing what to say.
"Well if your daughter does come back you need to make sure she's not been tainted by the Noceda girl," said Ms. Bryant, "There are a few re-education camps I can recommend-"
"Shut-up," said Mae barely in a whisper.
"Excuse me?!" said Ms. Bryant, not sure she had heard what she thought she heard.
"She told you to shut up," said Camila louder and looking Ms. Bryant straight in her eyes.
"Now see here, this is a Catholic School," said Ms. Bryant, "engaging in homosexual behavior is a sin. I'm trying to help-"
"STOP TALKING! YOU HORRIBLE PERSON!" shouted Mae Boonchuy as she stood up from her chair and moved toward Ms. Bryant causing her to flinch.
"Our children are missing, they may have run away because they were scared of how we'd react to them being gay, and all you can say is how "sinful" that is?!" said Camila in a firm voice, also standing up and joining Mae to stare directly at Ms. Bryant.
"I enrolled my daughter here because I thought you would provide a better education than a public school, not because I care about your definition of what a sin is!" said Mae, "I said it before but let me repeat it so that your small, stupid, insignificant brain can understand! I DON'T CARE IF ANNE IS GAY! SHE'S STILL MY DAUGHTER AND I LOVE HER!" With that Mae marched angrily out the door and out of the school.
"But wait listen to me….it's wrong, I tell you, it's not natural. Luz is a sinner," pleaded Ms. Bryant who was not used to people speaking to her in that manner.
"You know I was raised Catholic," said Camila, standing up from her chair and glaring at Ms. Bryant. Camila kept speaking in a calm and slow tone, but it was evident through her voice how much contempt for Ms. Bryant she was feeling, "like many Latinas I was raised Catholic and told how important it was to follow "god's" teachings or go to hell. When I was in college I stopped going to church, I started questioning things about what I had been taught. Then when Luz was born I started again, I wanted her to grow up like I did, and have a good moral grounding, but if you think my daughter, who I know has some flaws, but is otherwise a sweet and caring girl, if you think she's a sinner just because she's gay, then maybe it's time I reconsider my "faith." Maybe it's time I stop giving my hard earned money to an institution like this!"
Camila moved closer to Ms. Bryant causing the women to shrink in fear. Camila then spoke in that same tranquil but furious tone she had used earlier, "Don't you ever call my daughter a sinner again. I will slap you in the face if you do!"
Ms. Bryant didn't respond and with that Camila turned and went out the same door. As soon as Camila was out of sight of Ms. Bryant she began crying herself, unable to hold back the tears. She kept walking out of the school and into the parking lot.
Mae was standing in the parking lot, her hands on her knees, hunched over and crying. Camila came up to her putting her arm around her to try and comfort her.
"I don't care if Anne is gay," said Mae through the tears, "if that's why she ran away…..Anne I wish I had known, I would have said that's fine, I still love you. I accept you for who you are…..Anne please come home….." Mae continued to cry not sure how to absorb this new information. She did eventually stand up though and looked into Camila's eyes. Eyes that were also starting to fill with tears.
"I knew something was wrong with Luz, but I didn't know it was this," she said, "when I picked her up from the dance that night she seemed so dispirited. I tried to get her to talk about it, but was she really so scared of how I'd react that she ran away? Luz….I still love you mija…even if you're gay I still love you…..I just want you to come home…." With that Mae came up and hugged Camila the two of them continuing to cry.
After a moment Detective Ventura emerged from the school, "I thought it best we continue the conversation out here, I think it would be more productive without that clueless woman bothering us."
"I swear I didn't know," began Mae, "But I also swear If Anne had told me she was gay I wouldn't have gotten angry about it. I wouldn't have kicked her out of the house or told her to leave, please believe me!"
"I didn't know about Luz either," said Camila, "but I swear I would have been accepting if she'd told me. I would never want her to feel she was not welcome in her own home."
Detective Ventura looked deep into Mae and Camila's eyes. Eye's that were full of tears, eyes that were red from crying, eyes that were showing genuine emotional pain, eyes that were telling the truth.
"I believe you," said Detective Ventura compassionately, "Unfortunately in this job I've seen my share of parents who kicked their children out for being gay. But given the reaction you both had I believe that you genuinely didn't know, It's possible your kids ran away because they weren't sure how you'd react, but until we find them we'd have no way to know for sure."
"What parents would do such a thing?" asked Mae, in genuine surprise, "how could any parent kick a child out of their house for being gay?"
"Because they cling hard to old traditions," said Camila with contempt in her voice, "they can't comprehend or even begin to accept that maybe something they've been told their entire life is wrong. To be honest it's a big problem in the Latino community."
"Si yo se," said Detective Ventura, "mi mama no quiso que yo ser un policia, dijo que eso era "trabjao de hombres."
Camila rolled her eyes in disgust upon hearing that.
"In any case, in the event we do find your kids, we can at least let them know how you feel," said Detective Ventura.
"Is there anything else we can do to help?" asked Mae.
"Yes, the two of you can help me start a flyer campaign, we can make missing persons flyers for your daughters and start to distribute them all over the city. I'll contact the other parents to see if they'd like to help as well. It's a small thing, but it does sometimes work!" said Detective Ventura.
"We would need a large group of people to help distribute these flyers," observed Camilla.
"I can help with that," said Mae suddenly smiling, "I am part of a Thai temple that comes together once a week. There are large group of us, if I ask they will help us put the posters up."
"That's great Mrs. Boonchuy," said Detective Ventura, "send me the details and we'll coordinate this together. I'll contact you with what information we should put on the posters, we'll also need a recent picture of your daughters."
"Okay thank you very much!" said Mae. With that, the three women were about to leave before Camila stopped Mae.
"Hey wait a minute Mae," said Camila, "I just realized I don't have your contact information, we should probably keep in touch to help each other out."
"Yes that good idea," agreed Mae, with that the two exchanged phone numbers, then departed with a small sense of hope in their hearts that they would find their daughters!
One Month Later
The small restaurant of Thai Go was a mostly uninteresting site. It was a small red building that was indistinguishable from other buildings around it. Though its neon sign helped it to stand out to customers. For the past month one important new addition to the building was a flyer asking if anyone had seen two missing girls. The flyer was posted both on the inside and the outside of the building, though in all the time it had been there, no one had reported on either of the girls. As the door to Thai Go opened its bell announced the arrival of a customer, one who Mae Boonchuy instantly recognized.
"Camila glad you could make it," greeted Mae Boonchuy warmly.
"Hello Mae," said Camila "I wanted to check up on you and see how you were doing. Also I wanted to give you something."
Camila raised up her hands to reveal a framed picture of some kind. Mae took the picture and gasped as she looked at it. It was a sketch drawing of what was obviously supposed to be Anne.
"Is this Anne?" asked Mae.
"Yes I think so, I found it in Luz's room while I was looking through her things. Looking for any sort of clue as to where she might have gone," explained Camila.
"Luz drew this?" said Mae in amazement, "it's very nice, she must be very talented."
"I remember Luz telling me a bit about that sketch when I saw her drawing it," said Camila, "I think she said she was going to give it to Anne as a birthday present. She must have forgotten to take it with her to school that day."
"Camila…." said Mae seriously, "I can't accept this, your daughter drew it you should keep it to remember her."
"Luz has been drawing for as long as I can remember," said Camila a bit wistfully as she remembered the past, "I have plenty of drawings from Luz, she would usually make me one on Mother's Day. Not only that but I have a lot of tinfoil swans Luz used to make me….."
Camila trailed off as the memories became too painful, she started crying as she thought of the memory of Luz. Mae didn't say anything, instead she put her arm around Camila and let her finish crying.
"Thank you," said Mae when Camila was done, "I don't know what to say, I have pictures of Anne but this is nice to have. You framed it?"
"Yes I thought it best, now you can hang it somewhere, maybe one day…..you can even give it to Anne," said Camila.
Mae's face fell at this, "I would love nothing more than to do that, but it's been a month now, and there hasn't been anything new."
"Have you kept in touch with Detective Ventura?" asked Camila.
"I have," began Mae, "every time she calls me though it's the same, nothing new to report, no new leads, I almost wish she'd stop calling if that's all she has to say."
"And no tips from the posters either?" asked Camila as she glanced over at the one that was in the window.
"No nothing," said Mae defeated.
"I remember the first day we placed all those flyers," said Camila, "it was nice getting to meet all those different people in the Thai Community."
"Yes they all like you very much Camilla," replied Mae, "I guess Asians and Latinos have more in common than I thought."
"Hey we're immigrants, we get the job done!" said Camila causing Mae to smile at that reference.
"When I first move here I thought adjusting to a new way of life would be the hardest thing I ever do," said Mae, "I never thought I would have to go through something even harder."
Camila looked at Mae, "I understand, whether you're from Thailand or the D.R. moving to a new country is always difficult, you don't speak the language, you don't know the customs, you feel so much like a stranger."
"And unfortunately there are people who hate you just because you from a different country," added Mae.
"Yes….I know," agreed Camila, "thankfully I haven't experienced too much of that, but I know other people who have."
"Thank you for stopping by Camila," said Mae, "did you want to get something to eat?"
"No, I'm fine, I should probably get going now," said Camila, "but I will come by to check on you."
"If I hear anything I promise to keep you informed," said Mae, "even if it only involves Anne."
"Agreed, if I find out anything, even if it's just information about Luz I promise to share it with you," said Camila.
Three Months Later
As Camila approached the familiar restaurant of Thai-Go her mood improved slightly, she had started coming here more frequently in the past three months. While she was initially distraught over the disappearance of her daughter coming to this place and talking with her new friend had helped to ease the pain of that. Camila opened the door and was immediately greeted by Mae Boonchuy.
"Camila," she said coming out from behind the counter to hug her.
"Hello Mae," said Camila in a subdued tone, the two embraced for several minutes before separating.
"I'd ask how you are doing, but I feel as though I know the answer," said Camila trying to make a joke.
"I'm probably doing the same as you," answered Mae with a small laugh, "by the way thank you for having a look at Domino."
"Oh no problem, of course, I'm glad we caught those worms early, they can be so hard to get rid of if you wait too long," answered Camila.
"I think we might switch to you as our new Veterinarian," said Mae, "If it wasn't for you noticing her odd behavior when you came over that one time, we might not have found out about the worms until it was too late."
"If you want to," said Camila, "I would be more than happy to have you and Domino as patients."
"You hungry?" asked Mae.
"Yes, I actually came by to grab some lunch, can I get the usual?" asked Camila.
"Of course….would you mind if I joined you?" asked Mae.
"No of course not," answered Camila.
"Jeff," called Mae to the back of the restaurant, "I'm going to sit down for a bit with Camila, can you handle things?"
"Yeah sure," called Jeff, "no worries."
"I take it you haven't heard anything new," began Camila.
"No….I've also stopped getting calls from Detective Ventura," said Mae somberly.
"She hasn't called me either, I don't blame her, I think she just doesn't like saying how there's no new information in the case every single time she called us in the past," said Camila.
"I can respect that, but it feels as though the police have just given up," said Mae.
"What about you?" asked Camila, "have you…..given up?"
Mae paused for a long time, turning her head away, before turning back and replying, "I stopped counting the number of days Anne has been gone. I think I stopped around 90 days….I honestly don't remember."
"Do you still have that room?" asked Camila hesitantly, she knew "the room" was a touchy subject for Mae.
"Yes I still have it, I don't think I'll get rid of it anytime soon," admitted Mae, "I assume you haven't gotten rid of Luz's things yet either."
This time it was Camila who paused a long time before replying, "yes….you're right I haven't. A few days ago I tried to. I gathered up a lot of Luz's old things including the tinfoil swans she used to make. I was going to throw it all away, but….I just couldn't do it."
"Are we being delusional?" asked Mae, "I'm so torn between trying to move on and trying to hold out hope. I just don't know what to do anymore….."
Neither of the women spoke for a long time as they each considered what was said. Finally Camila broke the silence.
"I think we should wait at least a year before we lose hope completely," after a few moments she added, "do you think if Anne and Luz are…..together…..that they're happy?"
"If they are then I hope so," said Mae, "I hope they are at least taking care of each other, helping each other survive."
"Same here," agreed Camila, "though speaking of that, have you heard any news about the other girls?"
"No," said Mae, "I do know that the Wus moved, seems the father had been offered a new job and decided to take it. They aren't in LA anymore."
"Wait they just moved?" asked Camila in surprise, "how could they do that with their daughter still missing?"
"I think that's part of the reason," answered Mae, "they wanted to get away from the pain, and wanted to try and forget about what happened. In their minds Marcy is gone, they've already given up hope on her returning."
"That….that's so sad," said Camila.
"I guess that's why I don't want to get rid of Anne's things or the room, at least not yet," admitted Mae, "probably why you don't want to throw out Luz's things too."
Camila paused before replying, "yeah….that's actually a good point. If I get rid of Luz's things then I know on some level I've given up, and I just can't do that yet."
"Well I suppose it's better than what happened to the Waybrights," said Mae.
"What happened to the Waybrights?" asked Camila.
"Losing Sasha put a strain on their marriage," explained Mae, "last I heard they're getting a divorce. They blamed each other for Sasha running away, I don't think their relationship was very strong even before this happened. I think losing Sasha just exacerbated problems they were already having."
Hearing this Camila decided to ask a question, "I'm sorry to hear that…..how are you and Jeff doing?"
Mae didn't answer right away, though she did smile at the question, "Jeff and I are okay, it's been hard for both of us, but we are there for each other. Sometimes one of us starts thinking about Anne and we just…..start crying, the other one is always there to hold onto us and help us get through it."
"That's good to hear," said Camila perking up a bit, "going through this nightmare is hard enough on your own, I'm glad you have someone like Jeff to help you."
"Me too," said Mae, smiling, "I'm glad I have Jeff and you, this would be a lot harder without you both."
Camila smiled on hearing that, she reached forward, across the table, with her hand to gently grab Mae's hand, "Listen, please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm glad we're going through this together."
Mae looked into Camila's eyes. Camila continued.
"Losing your child like this is terrible, and I honestly wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, but….being able to talk about it with you has been helpful. I'm so sorry for saying that…."
"It's fine," said Mae taking Camila's hand in her own, "I understand your meaning, it is terrible, but….it's better to have someone who is going through the same pain you are. It good to have someone you can empathize with."
"If there's been one good thing to come out of this," began Camila, "it's that you and I have become a lot closer…..and I'm glad for that." The two women continued to smile at each other, for a moment their spirits lifted.
Suddenly a customer walked into the store, a man holding his phone out and looking into it. He looked around, his brown eyes scanning the restaurant for someone to talk to.
"Can I help you?" asked Jeff coming up to the front.
"Oh, Grubhub here I have an order for a Josefina L." said the man showing Jeff his phone. Jeff looked over the phone and the order on it.
"Not ready yet," he said, "Give me a few more minutes." With that the man was going to go and sit down at one of the booths to wait for the order, but the poster in the window of the shop caught his eye. He began to stare at it intently, Camila and Mae noticed this and got up from their booth to talk to him.
"Have you seen one of those girls?" asked Mae to the man.
"Huh, I think so, but it was a while ago, when did they go missing?" he asked. Mae told him the date.
"Oh never-mind, I'm pretty sure it was before that," he replied, "I think I gave a Lyft ride to those two as well as some other girls at one point. Some slumber party challenge, I think they called it a "Scare Dare"
"That must have been when Sasha had that sleepover," said Camila, "are you absolutely sure about the date?"
"Pretty sure, I remember her" said the man pointing to Luz, "she actually liked my music. We jammed to Mana"
"Oh I like them too," said Camila, "in fact the reason Luz listens to Mana is because she heard me playing it all the time."
"Oh cool that's neat," said the man, "Yeah I got a few musical tastes from my parents too." He turned back to look at the poster. "Have the really been missing this entire time?"
Both Mae and Camila nodded their heads.
"Oh I'm so sorry to hear that," said the Man.
"The hardest part is the not knowing," said Camila "if we knew something about where they were or what happened at least we could have closure."
"Order for Josefina L. ready," called Jeff coming from the back with the order.
"Oh thanks," said the Man grabbing the order and putting it In his bag, before he left he turned back to the other two women, "listen I know this isn't much, but I travel all around Los Angeles doing food deliveries. I also drive for Lyft, I promise to keep an eye out for those girls. I know that's not much but,"
"Thank you, we appreciate it," said Camila, "every little bit help."
"Yes thank you," said Mae.
"I'm sorry, I wish I could do more," said the man as he opened the door and went back to his car.
