Louis struggled to carry the six Pokéballs. He had to be really careful and not drop them. The professor glanced over and saw the boy's trouble.

"Here, let me help you," he said.

The professor proceeded to pick up a handful of Louis' Pokéballs, making it easier for the boy.

"Thanks, sir," said Louis, gratefully.

Soon after, both teacher and student left the selection room and entered another.

This one, a small, empty, featureless area, with a mirror that looked into an adjacent, equally empty space.

"What happens now?" asked Louis.

"Your Pokémon will be released," answered Ms. Flora. "Here, you'll be able to witness which Pokémon you chose."

"Oh..." the boy paused. "Well then, why are we in here?"

"To make it a surprise for the Pokémon."

Louis chuckled.

The professor walked into the separate area with Louis' carefully selected Pokéballs. Louis and Ms. Flora watched on through the adjacent mirror. The professor threw all Pokéballs into the air, releasing all of the monsters from the red and white capsules.

Louis immediately took focus on a small, light brown Pokémon that carried a bone in one of its hands, and the top half of what appeared to be a skull on its head.

"Wow, a Cubone!" cheered Louis. "That's awesome!"

Next to it, landed a small, quadruped fox-like Pokémon.

It had pale-yellow fur, a white muzzle with longer fur on its cheeks, and tufts of dark orange fur covering the interior of its ears.

Louis stared at the Pokémon, unsure.

"Who's...that?" he pondered.

"You don't know?" questioned Ms. Flora.

"No," answered Louis. "I've never seen that Pokémon in Johto."

With quick thinking, Ms. Flora reached into her pocket and produced a red, electronic device.

"Here, this'll come in handy," she said.

Louis took the device from Ms. Flora. He looked at it with confusion.

"Uh...what do I do with it?" he questioned.

"Just have the back of it pointed at the Pokémon," the teacher described. "It'll scan the Pokémon and give you its name and details."

Following these instructions, Louis pointed the device at the Pokémon in question.

Almost immediately, the screen lit up, revealing a picture of the fox-like creature.

"Fennekin, the fox Pokémon," an electronic voice read.

"Whoa!" Louis shrieked.

"Fennekin expels hot air from its ears that can reach up to near four-hundred degrees," continued the electronic voice. "It likes to snack on twigs."

"Fennekin, huh?" the boy spoke. "Neat."

Two more Pokémon landed on opposite sides of the Fennekin.

The first was a small, blue, canine-like Pokémon that had black legs and torso, a blue tail, yellow collar, and rounded bumps on the back of its forepaws.

The second was a quadruped feline-like Pokémon with black and reddish-orange markings. On its neck was a round, bell-like object.

Louis quickly used the Pokédex on the first Pokémon.

A picture of the new, blue Pokémon appeared on the screen rapidly.

"Riolu, the aura Pokémon," it spoke. "Riolu knows how people feel by looking at their auras. It doesn't approach dangerous opponents."

The boy turned his attention to the second Pokémon, scanning it.

"Torracat, the fire-cat Pokémon. And evolved form of Litten," the Pokédex spoke.

'Litten?' thought Louis.

"When Torracat spits fire, the fiery bell on its throat makes a high-pitched ringing sound."

"Cool!" exclaimed Louis.

Suddenly, another Pokémon appeared. It was small and had light blue skin. The frog-like Pokémon had a dark-blue stripe that journeyed from the base of its head to its nose. Around its neck was what appeared to be a white mane.

The Pokémon landed awkwardly on the solid floor, sending it careening sideways and onto its back.

"Yo! Is it ok?!" Louis gasped.

"Don't worry, I'm sure it's fine," answered Ms. Flora.

The frog-like creature lifted itself up and shook out all of the cobwebs.

Louis once again used the Pokédex to scan the Pokémon.

"Froakie, the bubble frog Pokémon," the electronic voice taught.

"...bubble frog?" blurted Louis.

"From its chest and back, Froakie creates bubbles called Frubbles, which act as a cushion and soften the blow of an opponent's attack."

Louis chortled.

"Are you for real?" he chuckled.

Finally, a bird Pokémon fluttered its wings, landing safely on the ground.

It had black and white markings on its feathers. On its forehead was a greyish-brown spot, while on the face was a white, mask-like marking with a pattern of spikes on the lower edge.

For the last time, the boy pointed the electronic device at the creature.

"Staravia, the starling Pokémon, and the evolved form of Starly," it read. "Staravia flies over forests and fields, and travels in large flocks."

Louis smiled at the new information.

He gazed at all of the Pokémon with a sense of wonder.

Some frolicked, others stood awaiting instruction, but all were his.

A new sense of pride built deep within the boy.

"My... team," he absentmindedly spoke.

"Wanna meet them?" offered Ms. Flora.

The boy nodded in silent excitement.

Louis and Ms. Flora stepped out of the small, empty room. They approached the door to the area directly opposite to them before Ms. Flora stopped in her tracks, turning to Louis.

"Wait here, please," she said.

The teacher walked into the room, while Louis waited outside.

Ms. Flora approached the six chosen creatures. Cubone looked to the others.

"Cubone Bone-Bone?" it said.

Froakie shook its head.

"Froa-kie Froak," it replied.

Outside, the boy shifted from foot to foot, unable to contain his joy.

'Ok, how am I going to introduce myself to them?' he thought.

The boy performed separate scenarios on the introduction of himself to his new Pokémon.

"Good day to you, fellow Pokémon," he said, with a posh voice.

He groaned, shaking his head.

"Hello there," he goofily said, groaning again afterwards.

"Yo yo yo! Your new trainer is in the-" Louis stopped before he could embarrass himself any more.

The boy took deep breaths, containing the excitement.

'Just be genuine...and don't exaggerate,' he thought.

Ms. Flora walked to the door and grabbed the handle.

"May I introduce...your new trainer," she announced.

Ms. Flora opened the door to reveal a proud Louis, with his arms folded.

"Whassup, party people? I'm ready to rock this hou-...oh no..." he paused.

Louis pinched the bridge of his nose, blushing.

"I said not to exaggerate, Louis," he grumbled. "Uh, can I get a do-over?"

Heh. Way to embarrass yourself, Louis. LOL
