Harry Potter and the King of Dragons: A Harry Potter Fanfiction

Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter or any of its associated characters: all rights belong to JK Rowling. I do not own any crossover references used in the story: all rights belong to their original creators. I do own any OC spells explained at the end of a chapter.

Plot: When Harry, Ron and Hermione discovered Hagrid was harbouring one of the world's most-dangerous magical creatures, none of them had any idea of how big a change this one night would have on them, least of all on Harry himself.

Author's Note: So, here we have a TRULY INSANE, but, hopefully, fun idea that is more or less based around a concept that, personally, I've never really read on-site before, so, as it so often does, my mind went: what the heck, let's have some fun!

So, let's do just that, shall we?

And, as always, if you don't like it, don't read it.

Or, to put it another way: if you've got anything negative or hateful to say about this or any other story, then just DON'T post it!

Seriously, guys; nobody's forcing you to keep reading, now, are they?

Chapter 1: A Boy and His Egg

"We know about the Philosopher's Stone!"

"Oh…"

"We think Snape's trying to steal it…"

"Snape is one of the people protecting the Stone…now, if yeh don' mind, I've got more-important things ter be takin' care of…"

As Hagrid tried to steer the argument that Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermione, were having with the lovable, if somewhat-clumsy and unsubtle giant of a man, a sudden rattling noise broke the three friends out of their trains of thought. At the same time, Hagrid seemed to change his mind too as he turned to the fireplace before, reaching into the cauldron that Harry and co had noticed hanging over the flames, the large man let out a low moan of shocked pain before he set a large, round-shaped object on the table between him and his three young friends.

As the three Gryffindors gathered around the strange-looking object, Harry found his eyes glued more to the shimmering smoothness of the object's glow from the flames, more than the object, or even his own curiosities about it.

As he stared deep into the shimmering, almost-golden colouring of the shape's surface, Harry felt his chest growing warm as a strange, but not unwelcome sensation suddenly rippled deep inside of him. At the same time, he was dimly aware of a feeling of great desire, coupled with a pull that wouldn't have been out of place with two magnets, drawing him closer and closer to the object on the table.

His green eyes also seemed to have taken on an eerie, almost-hypnotised glaze to their colouring while, as Harry found his attention solely focused on the oval-like shape of the item, he barely noticed Ron and Hermione speaking up as they too looked at the object in question.

"Hagrid!" gasped Hermione, a mixture of shock and wonder in her voice as she asked, "What, exactly, is that?"

"That?" asked Hagrid, before he fumbled over his next words.

Fortunately, Ron was there to break the giant's train of thought, almost as easily and suddenly as the rattling noise of the object on the table in front of them had broken theirs.

"I know what that is…but…blimey…Hagrid, where on earth did you get it?"

"I won it," said Hagrid, sounding almost-proud of himself as he explained, "Off of a fella I met down the pub; he seemed awfully keen on getting rid of it, mind…"

"And you didn't wonder why?" asked Hermione, looking from the object in front of them to the large man next to them, her eyes wide with a mixture of accusation and fear as she asked, "Hagrid, you do realise what creature lays an egg like that, don't you? Don't you know about the laws surrounding rearing, much less hatching a creature as dangerous as that, especially in a house made of wood? Honestly, haven't you ever read the Fairy Tale of the Three Little Pigs?"

"I…I know it's risky, 'Ermione," said Hagrid, his eyes shining with a mixture of pride and warmth as he explained, "But I…well, 'Arry'll probably tell yeh that I've always wanted me own…seriously misunderstood creatures, they are…"

"Hagrid, that's a dragon's egg!" exclaimed Hermione hotly, earning a shocked look from Ron, while Hagrid, bless his soul, didn't seem to see why she was getting so hysterical, much less tightly-wound up about all this. "Having a dragon in Britain is illegal! It says so in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them; Newt Scamander himself made a personal note about being extremely cautious if you're found with one in your possession, and he's had thunderbirds, Nundus, Obscuri and even Occamy and Qilin under his care! I mean, don't you realise having this, just having the egg and failing to report it, could…"

"Hermione…"

Suddenly, even Hagrid was surprised to hear Harry speaking, if only because of how light his voice sounded, not to mention faraway, while his eyes were still fixed on the dragon egg in front of him.

"What?" asked Hermione, though not before she, along with Ron, finally managed to take note of how lost, off in his own world and, seemingly, entranced by the egg, Harry looked, even as he replied to Hermione's question.

"Shut up…"

"Harry, you don't understand!"

"Actually, I do," argued Harry, extending a hand to the egg; as Ron and Hermione watched, Harry traced his fingers over the smooth, still-glowing shell of the egg's surface before he continued, "I understand that you think you have all the answers, just because you read it in a book…I understand you clearly think you can just rattle off some obscure references, let alone to a nice, loving, carefree friend like Hagrid, and expect us to take your word as gospel…but, most of all, I understand that, as angry as you are at Hagrid, what you really are, Hermione Granger, is…jealous!"

"Jealous?" chorused Ron and Hermione, though she said it a bit more-forcefully and angrily than he did.

"Of course," said Harry, before Hagrid's eyes widened when Harry pulled the egg close to him, without so much as a thought, much less a care that its surface was hot enough for him, which meant, for a human like Harry, it should have probably been frying him alive.

And yet, Harry didn't seem fazed, much less affected, by the heat as he held the egg against his body, wrapping his arms around it before he began stroking it in his arms, like a newborn kitten, as he went on, "You, like Ron and, yes, even like me, realise what Hagrid has here, and you're jealous of him, because it means you can't put all your booksmarts and I-know-better-than-everyone-else-ness into helping him hatch a healthy, happy and, potentially, powerful and beautiful Northern Fjordic Night Fury…"

"Um…actually, 'Arry; I…I discovered 'e's a Norwegian Ridgeback…"

"No," said Harry, looking up at Hagrid as he continued petting the egg softly, before he insisted, "She is a Northern Fjordic Night Fury…an easy mistake to make, Hagrid, since they both have ridged spines, but, unlike a Ridgeback, a Night Fury's spines are, like the fangs and claws of these lovely dragon breeds, retractable, to allow them to get the drop on their prey, or make for a more-agile, stealthy and even speedy flight. In fact, the Night Fury is said to be the fastest dragon breed in history: it's so fast, it can even outfly Peregrine Falcons…which happen to be one of its favourite foods too…must be the speed thing, I guess…"

"Harry, come on, you're talking nonsense!" exclaimed Hermione, earning a sideways look from Harry, while even Ron looked offended by her insult to his friend, as well as the surprisingly-detailed new knowledge Harry seemed to have acquired, as Hermione told him, "Unlike some of you, I have read Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them cover-to-cover, no less than ten times..."

"Oh, then you must know all about them," argued Harry, earning a scoff and a nod from Hermione, as though she was humouring him, before Harry continued, as though he hadn't noticed. "And how remote their sanctuaries are, because of how humans have hunted their kind for years, if only to harness the power-of-the-sun-like burning fury that boils up in their lungs and bellies, also making their flames one of the hottest of any dragon. Then you'd also know that there's how, like a Demiguise, these beasts were once hunted for their scales, because of how some of them, which were said to be as white as albino and known to the locals as, loosely-translated, Light Furies, can even turn invisible by bathing in their own flame. As a result, the Night and Light Furies became hunted for the potential of making whole suits of armour out of them, much like Demiguise hair is used as materials in Invisibility Cloaks."

"No, that's not…you don't…you couldn't possibly…there's no such thing!"

"Um, Hermione?" asked Ron, jerking his head in Harry's direction, "You do remember what Harry got off of an anonymous benefactor for Christmas, don't you? And besides, he's also right about the Night Fury…"

"How would you know that? You don't even know how to wipe dirt off your nose…"

"No," said Ron, before he indicated the egg in Harry's arms, which Harry actually seemed to be pushing up against his own human flesh, as though he sought to share his body heat with the baby dragon inside, as he explained, "But I do have a brother who is an expert in dragon breeds; he'd have to be, since he works with them. And, in fact, Hermione, when Charlie heard I wouldn't be able to join Mum and Dad over the holidays in Romania with him, Fred, George, Ginny, Percy and even my Dad and my big brother, Bill, he sent me a full set of books on dragons from a local shopping place over in Romania. And some of the breeds in those books, they're not in Scamander's little field guide, mostly because they're only found on Reserves or in places that you'd need to go even higher than Dumbledore for permission to see them!"

"Then how do these guides exist? The Ministry would never allow them!"

"Probably because the sale of them, and all proceeds from the money made, goes to the Reserves around the world, which are supervised and inspected by the highest authority in the Magical World, a guy known as the Archmage, though Charlie told me he's never met him."

"Okay, now you're both talking…"

Suddenly, before Hermione could get another word out, a loud crack filled the hut, causing Harry and Hagrid's eyes to widen as Harry looked down, just in time to see a fissure forming in the egg's surface.

Being as careful as he could, Harry set the egg down on the table again, but, as he did so, Ron couldn't resist laughing, while Hermione actually screamed in alarm, when the egg leapt back into Harry's arms, where it proceeded to shake and tremble, almost as though it was trying to nuzzle him, telling him it wanted to be in his arms, even as the dragon inside hatched.

"I…I think she wants ter be with you, 'Arry," said Hagrid, earning a small smile from Harry as he held the egg carefully in his arms, just as another loud cracking sound filled the hut. When it did so, however, Ron's eyes widened in awe when what could only be described as a ring of blue mystic energy seemed to pass through this newest crack, where it brushed against Harry's skin, making the boy himself shudder.

Thankfully, even Hermione seemed to have been stunned into silence, while she, along with Ron, Hagrid and Harry, watched as more cracks, and more splintering noises, filled the hut, accompanied by more rings, which constantly brushed against Harry, making him shiver in expectant delight.

At one point, he even laughed, causing the newest ring to fly up into his mouth, where, without really knowing why, Harry swallowed the ring and its energy, before he kissed the cracked egg as he whispered, "Thank you, little one…"

Again, even Hermione seemed to have been shocked into silence, while, as a final crack filled the hut, this time, Harry had to actually drop the egg when, without warning, it suddenly burst into flames. A bright, iridescent, blue-coloured flame that not only consumed the egg, and all its cracked surfaces, but also seemed to flicker and lap at Harry's fingertips and even the tips of his shoes, like the fire was trying to get at his toes.

While Ron, Hermione and Hagrid jumped back in amazement, however, Harry just stared in awe, wonder and a surprising level of acceptance as the blue fire crawled up over his fingers, and along his shoes, before it travelled up the sleeves of his robes, and the legs of his trousers; when he felt it brushing over his flesh, he smiled and, again, shivered, like something was actually trailing its fingers/claws over him, but in a good way.

All the while, the full flame on the floor grew in size, much to Hagrid's amazement and Hermione's speechless wonder, before they all gasped, Harry included, when the flame suddenly exploded.

At the same time, the fire crawling over Harry's skin had managed to reach his heart, where it proceeded to burrow its way deep into his body, almost as though this was causing the explosion.

However, as Harry felt his body succumb to the rather-warm, if not pleasing touch of the fire, he also saw the explosion from the main flame die down, revealing a sight that not even Hermione could have begun to theorise, much less lecture anyone else on how, if at all, it was even possible for something like…like this to happen.

Instead of a baby dragon, the flames died down to reveal a young girl with hair that was as black as Harry's raven hair colouring, and then some. She was, roughly, about the same size as Hermione, but with a more-defined, almost elf-like figure to her; she had fingernails and toenails that seemed to be painted black while, on one side of her body, right where her heart was located, the girl also had a bolt of lightning, which seemed to be held in the eye of a dragon.

"Who…who is that?" asked Hagrid in surprise, earning dumbfounded shakes of the head from Ron and Hermione, while the giant asked, "Wha' happened ter me dragon? Where is he? Where's Norbert?"

"Norbert?" asked Ron.

"Well, he's got to have a name, don' he?" asked Hagrid defensively.

"Actually…"

Suddenly, even Hagrid looked back to the girl, while Ron and Hermione could only stare as she stirred, opening her eyes, revealing two bright, almost-viridian-like-green eyes that seemed to be held in a sclera of mystical, silvery-white colours. Her pupils were also gold in colour, making her look truly unique, even as she pulled herself up before, looking to Harry – and nobody else, as the others noticed – the girl cocked her head to one side in a cute manner before she spoke again, her voice soft, but fierce to behold.

"I have a name, thank you, giant: it's Norah, and, at last, I've finally found you, my Prince…thank you for finding me…"

Then she hugged Harry, earning an alarmed look from Hermione, while Ron could only laugh as Harry wrapped the girl, Norah, in his arms without even a care in the world for the fact that she was naked.

"Same to you, Norah," said Harry, before he shifted himself just slightly, as he wrapped his robe around Norah.

Almost like he was holding her in the wings of a dragon, you might say…

As the two held onto one another, however, Ron's head snapped around when he caught a flash of something moving from the window.

"Who was that?" asked Hagrid.

By the time Harry had parted from Norah, and ran to the window himself, Ron and Hermione, as well as Hagrid, felt a glimmer of fear well up inside of them when they heard a low, rumbling growl tear out of Harry as he hissed through clenched teeth.

"We need to get to Professor Dumbledore…immediately!"

"W-W-W-Why, mate?" asked Ron, watching as Norah, who'd now slid her arms through Harry's robe, so she was covered up, moved to stand behind Harry, where she then wrapped her arms around him and held him close, shushing his growling, even as Harry replied to Ron's question.

"Because Malfoy has just seen what happened with me and Norah…and no prizes for guessing what greasepit he's going to go blabbing to!"

Oh boy, even before Harry himself can understand what's happened, he has to deal with idiots and naysayers, but can our heroes get help from the Headmaster before Harry may have to decide to treat his new friend to roasted ferret?

Also, what did happen, exactly? How on earth does a dragon egg hatch into a beautiful girl who now calls Harry her Prince?

Why does she do that, and why does Harry seem willing to let her feelings, and everything else, into him?

Also, before anyone asks, let me stress that this is NOT a crossover, even though it's pretty obvious where the idea for Norah's dragon breed came from; also, in case you're wondering, yes, I do have plans for others of this breed – both Night and Light forms – to appear in the story, but, again, I stress that this is NOT a crossover with HTTYD: I am simply dipping my toes in that fandom's sandbox;
