Sighing, I looked at the time.
Where is Clara? School ended half an hour ago. I do not want to waste my Friday afternoon standing around. Grabbing my phone out of my back pocket, I scrolled through my contacts and hit her name.
"Hi! You've reached Clara Hale. Leave your name and number and I will call back as soon as I can!" Her voicemail chimed in her chipper voice.
"Hi Clara. It's me. Um, I was just wondering if you were still picking me up from school? The play tryouts were canceled since Mrs. Paulson wasn't here today, but I already texted you this morning. I didn't get any messages so yeah. Call me back," I quickly muttered and ended the call.
Sitting on the bottom steps of the school, I let out another drawn out sigh.
I have two options.
A: I can wait here until Clara calls me back.
or
B: I can find my way home via GPS.
Cole isn't an option since he get off work until 5 and Phoebe doesn't have a mode of transportation.
Dialing her phone number, she picked up on the second ring, "Hey Lia! How was tryouts?" Her voice was cheerful as ever and eager to hear the news whether I made it or not.
"Hi Phoebe! The tryouts didn't happen so I'm out of school now. I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to take the train home and walk from there."
"What? Why? I thought Clara is picking you up from school?" She questioned with her lively tone melting into one with worry.
"Yeah. I called her and left a message, but she probably got held up at work or something. I'm 100% fine with walking home. My phone is still pretty charged and I'll use the GPS. No biggie."
"Are you sure? We've only been here for a week, Ophelia. I don't want you to get lost.. Or get hurt! I'm going to call Cole and he can pick you up." Her tone started to become frantic.
"No, no. It's okay, Phoebe! I don't want Cole to leave early for me. It's still light out and I can handle myself. I won't talk to any strangers. I'm going to go so I'll see you when I come home."
I heard a sigh on the other line, "Fine. You come straight home and no detours, okay? Be safe, sweetie."
Before my trek home, I plugged in my earphones and grabbed my fun new toy just in case. Glancing at the little canister, I slid it in my front pocket.
This will be fun.
Note to self: Do not look around in the train unless you want to be stared down by an old woman with a permanent scowl on her face or have a creepy pedophile wink at you.
Speed walking out of the area, I looked down at my phone and followed the little dot on my phone.
Whoever created the GPS did mankind a favor and we owe the person a lot.
The streets were bustling with people. The sound of cars honking at each other, a couple that probably owns a fruit stall yelling at each other in a language I couldn't decipher, and a guy beatboxing for a quick buck on the street corner were all I heard.
All of a sudden, sirens wailed. Looking out on the road, I've noticed a couple cop cars weave through traffic up ahead. Me being the curious person I am, I tried to figure out where they're heading as I started walking faster.
"Look! It's Spiderman!" A guy yelled. Cheers were heard as I looked up and saw a familiar webslinger swinging high above.
Huh. Small world.
Chuckling, I shook my head at how much of a coincidence this was. After aiding Captain America almost a year ago, my mind slipped on Spidey-boy. All of a sudden, he's appeared back in my life.
Honestly, I don't know if I would want to cross paths with him. He seems like a cool guy, but I don't know if there would be any animosity between us. I mean I did try to take him down all those months ago.
Queens is an immense city. Maybe we won't run into each other at all.
Seeing the cops trying to block the road in front of the bank. Some had their pistols trained at the bank, waiting for someone to come out.
"This is the New York Police Department! We have the place surrounded!" One of them yelled into a megaphone.
Hearing a gunshot from the inside, I heard screams of terror.
Pushing my way to the front from the right side, a cop held his hand out in front of me.
"Miss, you cannot go further," He ordered.
"What's going on, officer?" I asked as I heard another gunshot. He looked behind him before looking at me.
"There's a robbery taking place and there are hostages. Don't worry. We will handle this," He reassured with a strained smile.
I'm not sure about that, officer.
And what the hell was Spidey doing? Was he even in there?
Hearing a round of shots firing, I couldn't just stand here and wait for him.
Grabbing the officer's hand, he immediately locked eyes with me. Gotcha.
"You will let me through and will not remember I was here," I ordered in a whisper, watching his pupils blow out.
"I will let you through and I will not remember you were here," He repeated in a trance.
With a smirk, I ducked under his arm and used the pillars to shield me from the eyes of people.
The cool thing about my power is that once someone is under my little spell, they don't hear anything else until I give the command.
As soon as I was in the vicinity of the entrance, I raced in.
All I heard were sobs and yelling.
"If any of you make a move or even a sound, I'll blow your fucking brains out!" One goon yelled, shooting his gun in the air to emphasize his point. A couple shrieks of terror bounced off the walls. Crouching behind a desk, I peered around.
Five guys wearing ski masks and twenty civilians, more or less.
They had their guns trained on them as two of them hassled the clerks to put the money in their bags.
I felt my palms start to sweat. This will probably be the biggest feat I've done besides helping Captain America.
Peering at the ceiling, I didn't see the red and blue spandex anywhere.
Quietly rifling through a drawer, my hand grabbed an empty name plate.
Well, here goes nothing.
I slammed it on the ground.
"What was that?"
"I bet it's that spider freak!" Another goon voiced. "Come out, come out wherever you are."
Hearing heavy steps come toward me, I let out a breath.
"What do we have here?" A voice taunted above me. Looking up, I smirked as my glowing eyes peered into his blue ones that were quickly turning black.
"You will take me to your leader. Once I have control of him, shoot your comrades in the foot and then your own. We never had this conversation," I whispered.
"I will take you to my leader. Once you have control of him, I will shoot my comrades in the foot and then my own. We never had this conversation," He mindlessly droned as he grabbed my shoulder.
Time to put drama class into action.
"Let me go!" I screeched as I put up a fight against the goon. I mustered up tears, making them trail down my face. "Please let me go!"
Thrashing, I heard the other goons laugh. He released me from his grasp before I was grabbed again.
"Looks like we got a pretty one, boys!" They all laughed as I sniffled and stared at the ground. I felt my insides churn as his hand brushed my hair back before yanking it so I looked right at him. "What's a pretty thing like you doing here?" He leered as his hold tightened on my jaw.
I let out a breathless chuckle as I locked eyes with him. He was startled before he was under my complete control.
"You will strike me across the face and push me to the ground. You will escort yourself out of the bank and turn yourself as well as your friends over to the police with your hands up. We never had this conversation," I quickly commanded with a whisper.
I know, I know. Having the bad guy beat you up? Well, I don't want to look suspicious.
He repeated my words in a monotone voice before using his pistol to whip my face.
With a cry, I felt my lip split and the right side of my face throb. I'm pretty sure it split some skin. I felt the room spin a bit. He then proceeded to shove me away. Having my back slam on the marble floor, I groaned in pain as I rolled to my side. Touching my cheek gingerly, I spit out the metallic taste out of my mouth.
"You know, it's not polite to pistol whip a lady."
So much for crossing paths...
"It's that spider freak!" A series of shots went off as they tried to shoot him. Screams echoed throughout the bank from the hostages. He dodged their bullets as he webbed a guy's feet, making him fall flat on his face. Using his webs, he grabbed the gun and flung it away from him.
The leader dropped his gun and strode out of the bank with his hands up.
I tried to hold back my smirk. The other goon shot the foot of his comrades, making them cease fire on Spiderman and yell out in pain. Before he could finish the task of shooting his own, Spiderman swooped down and kicked him in the face before webbing his hands to the ground. With a swift punch to the face, the guy was out like a light.
Sitting up, I looked to the entrance and saw the two cops cuff the guy to the ground. A few more cops came in with their guns trained on the other robbers.
Smiling a little, I winced at my throbbing cheek. Well, at least part of the plan worked.
"You okay, miss?" A voice asked. Glancing upward, I saw a gloved hand. Wrapping my fingers around his hand, he pulled me up a bit quick which made me stumble into him. "Woah, steady there." Looking up at his masked face, I felt my cheeks flared up. I've never really been the damsel in distress before.
The mechanical eyes of his suit widened as he examined my face.
"I'm fine," I answered after a beat of silence. His hand hovered over my lip before he retracted.
"You uh… you've got a bit of blood right there," He pointed out, gesturing to his mouth.
"Well, I did get pistol whipped in the face just a few moments ago," I said with a light shrug, delicately touching the area before wincing.
"That looks pretty bad. Let me take you to an ambulance to get you checked out." He started to lead me out with a hand around my waist in case I stumble again.
"Oh no," I suddenly said as we stopped near the entrance. "I'm fine. It's just a bruise. It'll heal."
I am not a fan of anything to do with hospitals.
"What if your cheek is fractured or something? It looked like a very hard hit and it's bleeding," he pressed.
"I'm fine. The worst thing that will happen is a bruise. It will heal eventually. I just want to go home."
"Are you sure?" He asked again.
I nodded.
He sighed before helping me outside. I glanced at him.
"Aren't you going to make sure everyone is all right?" I asked, looking back. Some were telling their side of the story to the cops and others were being comforted by one another.
"I already did. No one was hurt except you." I nodded. I felt relief hearing that everyone else was okay.
Cheers erupted outside once we made an exit. People were screaming his name and cameras were pointed right at him. With me beside him. With his arm around my waist.
Oh great.
"You ready?" He asked me, tightening his hold on me. I whipped my head towards him with a question on my lips before a shriek escaped them. We flung in the air as he webbed his way away from the bank. Flinging my arms around his neck, I locked them tightly.
"This is really high up!" I exclaimed. I heard him laugh.
"Where do you live?"
"Why do you want to know?" I asked loudly, the wind whipping around as we swooped around the city.
"Well, you did say that you want to go home. I thought giving you a lift would be faster," he replied as he shot another web, propelling us forward.
Telling him my address, I noticed the ground was closing in pretty fast. I screamed and closed my eyes, bracing for impact.
Feeling us swing upward, I opened my eyes and released the breath I didn't realize I was holding.
"What the hell was that?" I exclaimed with a slight tremor in my voice. I felt my heart race against my chest. We could have died!
"Sorry! Sorry," he apologized.
Before I knew it, we landed on the roof of the apartment building I lived in.
"We're here," he stated softly, loosening his hold from my waist.
I didn't notice I still had my arms around his neck. Feeling my cheeks burn, I immediately let go.
He looked at me before turning away and about to jump off the roof.
"Wait!" I yelled, grabbing his wrist. "I just... I wanted to say thank you."
"It's not a problem."
"No, really. Just thank you for everything. I know a lot of people say it, but thank you for doing what you do. I can't imagine what it's like to do it everyday. Risking everything for others. So thank you," I genuinely voiced with a soft smile.
"You're welcome." With that, I let go of him as he jumped off the roof before swinging himself away.
