Once I strode through the doors of Midtown High Monday morning, I heard Betty's voice sweep through the halls as she gave the latest news alongside Jason.
"Last Friday, one of our fellow classmates, Ophelia Hale, was saved by New York's very own Spiderman." My head whipped towards one of the TVs to see a picture of Spiderman escorting me out of the bank. "A bank robbery occurred that afternoon until the masked hero swung in to save the day. Thankfully, no one was harmed. Thank you, Spiderman, for saving one of Midtown's finest yet again. In other news…"
There were whispers and someone was brazen enough to point their finger at me.
Betty is so going to get it later.
I told her specifically that I didn't want to be in the school news when she texted me on Saturday.
"Sup, hot stuff?" Seeing Flash beside me, I couldn't help but sigh. He swung his arm around my shoulder and walked with me.
"How can I help you, Flash?" I questioned, not really in the mood with his flirtatious attitude. Shrugging his arm off my shoulder, I put a little more distance between us.
"Heard Spiderman saved you," he started off, stuffing his hands in his pockets. "And that you got caught in the action." He peered closely at my face. "I don't see it though."
"It's called makeup, Flash." I internally sighed as I thought that I can have a quiet day and people not look at me.
Well, I guess I don't have to bother Phoebe about covering my face tomorrow.
"What was he like?" He asked, ignoring my interruption.
I shrugged my shoulders, "You know… Heroic? I guess?"
"So cool," he whispered to himself with a look of complete awe.
I held back a laugh.
"What's so special about him anyway?" I asked.
"Special about him? Dude's amazing! He saved me and the decathlon team last semester when we did the national championship in D.C.! The elevator in the Washington Monument was busted and we were all about to pummel to our doom, but then Spiderman showed up out of nowhere and saved all of us. I'd say that was the highlight of my school year," he praised.
I nodded in respect towards the masked hero.
"That's really cool of him," I simply stated, slightly distracted with what he just told me. "I'll see you later, Flash." He didn't protest since he greeted his posse with fist bumps and a high five.
What Flash said really got me thinking. Spiderman is New York's very own web slinger and yet he was in Washington D.C. saving a bunch of kids. How would he have known that was going to happen?
Spinning the dial on my locker, I felt a presence next to me. Looking to my left, I saw Ned and Peter.
About to greet them, Ned beat me to the punch.
"So, I heard that Spiderman saved you," he blatantly stated. My brow furrowed when I noticed that he quickly shifted his eyes to Peter before back to me.
"Oh yeah. He did," I answered, closing my locker once I plucked Romeo and Juliet out of my locker.
"And he swung you home too?" Out of the corner of my eye, Peter elbowed Ned.
Turning toward them and leaning against my locker, I nodded. "How do you know that?"
Ned looked like a deer caught in headlights before stuttering something I couldn't quite catch.
"On the news, we saw Spiderman swing away with you," Peter answered for him, which Ned nodded.
Something seemed a bit off, but maybe I'm just overthinking things.
"Oh okay."
"We heard what that robber did to you. You're okay, right?" Peter asked with worry etched on his features.
"Yeah. It looks a lot worse that it feels, but Phoebe helped me with covering it up so people wouldn't gawk. Sadly, that plan backfired…" I leered at a group of girls looking our way, making them shift their gaze and scurry away.
"I'm glad you're okay." He smiled at me as I felt a blush rise to my cheeks. Brushing my hair away from my face, I returned it.
The three of us started to head off to class when the five minute bell sounded. "So, how was your guys' weekend? You guys as well as the rest of the school heard part of mine already."
"Pretty good," Ned answered. "Me and Peter finished building the Super Star Destroyer on Sunday."
My eyes widened in surprise, "Wow. That's cool. Doesn't that set have like 3,100 pieces?"
"Yup," Ned answered. "3,152 to be exact. Took us a few days, but wasn't that difficult. When we built the Death Star, that was a challenge."
"Color me impressed."
"You like Star Wars?" Peter asked.
Nodding, "Oh yeah. The Empire Strikes Back and Rogue One are my top two. Although, The Force Awakens is pretty awesome too." The boys looked at me in awe. "What?" I asked, my head tilting to the side.
"Nothing! Nothing. It's just girls usually find us super nerdy when we talk about stuff like this," Peter admitted.
"Well, I'm not like other girls. And who cares? Honestly, I would rather talk about stuff like Harry Potter or Batman than the latest fashion trends." The final warning bell rang. I turned towards the two boys with a sigh, "'It were a grief so brief to part with thee. Farewell Peter.' Cometh Ned! For we must conquer the first of many."
"Ophelia! Wait up!" A familiar voice of a certain blonde called out once Algebra ended. Leaning against the wall near the door, I watched as she gathered her books in her arms. "Hey!" She greeted with a wide smile, flipping her blonde locks over her shoulder.
"Hey," I greeted. "So, I heard the news this morning an-"
"Oh right!" Betty jumped in. "What'd you think?"
"I thought that I asked to not mention it," I finished.
She let out a sigh.
"I know, but Principal Morita insisted on it since you and Spiderman were plastered on the front page of the Daily Bugle. I should have told you, but it was right before Jason and I went live. I'm sorry."
I nodded, "It's okay. I know that being part of the school news is important to you."
"Thanks for understanding, Ophelia!" Betty gave her megawatt smile. "So, I'll see you at lunch?" She asked as the warning bell rang through the halls.
"Sure."
"Okay class! Great job on the improv exercise! As you all know that tryouts were supposed to be last Friday, but due to my absence, I've decided to move them to after school today! So, we are going to take the rest of class time and practice."
Everyone got up from their chairs and paired up.
Inwardly sighing, I pulled out the two page script Mrs. Paulson gave me and read over Sandy's lines.
"Ophelia?" My head snapped up, looking towards Mrs. Paulson at her desk. "Why don't you rehearse with Daniel?" Looking around, I spotted a guy sporting a leather jacket, sitting in the back of the room. His head lifted up at the sound of his name as his piercing blues met my curious brown eyes.
"I'm good, teach," he replied nonchalantly. "Got all the lines memorized." He had a smirk on his lips as he winked my way. Facing forward, I rolled my eyes.
Oh joy, we got a badass in our hands.
I can't tell if he's method acting or genuinely the "bad boy" type.
"Well, it would be good to practice with another to get the feel of the character and the scene," She replied.
Glimpsing back at him, I saw that he didn't move an inch and instead leaned back on his chair with his eyes closed.
Deciding to be the bigger person, I got up from my seat and made my way over to him.
"What can I do for you, Princess?" He questioned once I stood in front of him. He had a brow raised with that smirk.
And I thought Flash's flirty attitude was insufferable.
Seeing his feet kicked back on a chair in front of him, I tugged it and smirked back at him as his feet slammed on the ground. Sliding into the seat, I already knew this dude would be a piece of work.
"Well, I thought we could get some practice in," I simply answered, lifting the script a bit.
"Like I said, I already have the whole thing memorized."
Two can play at that game.
"So let's test that then," I threw back with a light challenging tone.
Placing the script faced down underneath my chair, I faced him.
He chuckled as he leaned back with arms crossed and started right off the bat.
As we went back and forth between lines, it was clear that he could act. We weren't physically acting it out, but it almost feels like I'm in the movie. With the emotion he poured into it by just saying the lines was impressive.
It hurts me to say it, but he's pretty good.
Once we went through the script, he nodded his head.
"I gotta hand it to you. You're pretty good at this, Princess."
"Thanks." Getting up from my seat, I gathered my things as the bell rang.
Giving Mrs. Paulson a smile as I left, I felt a presence matching my stride.
"So, Princ-"
"It's Ophelia," I interjected, making his smirk widen.
"Princess. I think we make a pretty good team," Daniel finished.
"What makes you say that?" I asked.
"Call it intuition," he said, not divulging any other information. He ran a hand through his dark tousled locks and stuffed his hands in his pockets.
As I arrived at my locker, he leaned on Peter's. He gave off a cool, aloof demeanor. His being just oozed rebel.
"Don't you have to get to class?"
"Why go to class when I can just look at your pretty face?" he threw in a wink as he leaned closer to me.
I merely blinked at him and took a step back, trying to fight the blush that wanted to rise on my cheeks.
"I'm flattered," I stated with a deadpan look as I closed my locker.
"Excuse me," a voice sounded behind Daniel. He pushed off the locker and leaned against my closed one instead.
Peeking behind him, I stepped around Daniel and gave my friend a smile, "Hey Peter. Ready to head to chemistry?"
I wanted to get away from his overconfident and cocky attitude fast. Sure he's cute, but playboy/bad boy is not my type.
"Oh yeah. Sure," he grabbed his chemistry book and shut his locker.
"I can see that I've overstayed my welcome so I will bid you adieu, Princess," With a wink, he strode off.
With a sigh, I shook my head as I felt a headache forming.
"Who was that guy?" Peter asked with a tone I couldn't place.
"Someone who will definitely be a pain in my side for the rest of the semester."
"Do you guys have any activities going on after school today?" I asked Peter and Ned as I held my tray, deciding whether I want a burger or pizza for lunch. Grabbing the former of the two, I looked at the boys in front of me.
"Michelle didn't mention anything about a decathlon meeting so I guess not," Ned answered, grabbing a chocolate milk.
"Great! So, I'm trying out for the school play after school as you guys already know and I was wondering if you guys can be there as my moral support. Feel free to say no if you want to," I threw in with a sheepish smile as I fished some money out of my pocket.
"Definitely!" Peter chimed in. His face flushed, "I mean, uh, ye- yeah sure."
Ned gave Peter a look, "I thought we had that thing after school?"
"What thing?" Ned huffed and grabbed Peter by the arm as he yelled over his shoulder on getting a table for us.
Boys are so weird.
Getting my change from her, I turned around to almost spill my lunch on someone else. And that someone else was a person I was trying to avoid.
"Woah there! What's the rush? If you wanted to have lunch with me, you could have just said so."
Does this guy not get tired of winking or is his eye just twitchy?
"You wound me, princess!" He called after me as I brushed past him. "I'll see you at tryouts!" Thankfully, he didn't follow me this time.
Setting my tray down, I sat across from the duo that left me with a heavy sigh.
"Is that guy bothering you again?" Peter asked. Wordlessly, I nodded.
"I just had to practice with him during Drama and suddenly, he won't leave me alone," I grumbled, stabbing my side salad with a fork.
"Who is that guy?" Ned asked.
"Daniel Edmund. He's a junior and president of the Drama club. I heard he rides a motorcycle." Peering to my left, I looked at Michelle in shock. She tore her eyes away from her book and answered the question running through my mind. "I'm not obsessed. Just very observant."
"Really? I thought the whole "bad boy" look was just him method acting." Peter and Ned gave me blank stares. "It's a way of acting where a person fully immerses themselves by embodying the character emotionally and expressively."
"Ahh," the boys responded with a nod of understanding.
"So," I started off. "Are you both free after school?"
"Definitely. You're going to crush it," Peter added with a grin.
"If I do get the part, I will forever sing praise in yours and Ned's name," I promised with a smile of my own.
