2011 - Captain America

Phil Coulson walked along the brightly lit the hallways of the New York SHIELD building towards the bank of elevators just up ahead. As he drew closer to the grey doors his phone rang. Giving him pause, Coulson reached for the SHEILD issues phone and answered.

"Coulson." He stated as a form of greeting.

"Coulson I need you up on the helipad in 15 minutes. The research team out in the Atlantic found something I think you're gonna want to see." Came Fury's voice through the phone, but before he had a chance to reply the line went dead. Altering his original course, Coulson turned right, down another corridor towards a separate elevator shaft that would take him to his new destination. As the elevator rose higher and higher Coulson was trying to figure out what the research team could have found. To his knowledge they had been out canvasing areas and water channels that were often used by drug smugglers whom found it easier to get their products into North America by boats versus planes. He himself wasn't usually involved in these types of missions as his work with STRIKE Team Delta was his main priority over the past few years. Barton and Romanoff tended to require a lot of attention, both on and off mission, so he was curious as to why Fury felt he would have any interest in what the team had returned with.

The elevator slowed and came to a halt and the silver doors slid open revealing another corridor. Exiting, he made his way to the end where the door on the opposite end would open on to the helipad. Coulson braced himself as the winds this high up threatened to toss him off the roof and made his way over to the Quinjet that had just landed. The flight crew running around him, making sure the craft was secure, made way for him to walk up the ramp to where the research team was standing, huddled around a long container.

As he drew nearer, the team caught sight of him and that was when Coulson realized that it was in fact a cryo-chamber everyone was gathered around.

"Sir." One of the techs said in greeting.

Coulson recognized the one who had spoken, as he has run a mission with the young man around a year previous.

"Simons." He said in return, "Fury just called saying your team had procured something that I might find interesting." Walking around them and looking down into the chamber to see what all the fuss was about.

Before any of them could respond thought, Coulson swore as he realized whose face was staring back at him.

"Holy shit!"

Simons' chuckled as he came to stand by the older man.

"Ya, that was pretty much all of our reactions when we pulled him from the ice. Hell, Peterson looked like he was gonna faint."

Coulson looked down on the ice covered face of Captain America with awe. The man whose stories he had been raised on, who he viewed as his own personal hero and whose legacy he tried to uphold every day as a SHIELD agent was laying right in front of him.

"As soon as we verified that it was in fact the Captain Sir, we radioed in to Director Fury. Knowing your admiration for him we felt that who better to get to see him first."

Coulson turned to look at the young scientist and a grin started to grow.

"I appreciate you calling it an admiration Simon's, if it were anyone else within SHIELD they would have called it an obsession." turning back to the body, "why is he in a cryo-chamber anyways?" he asked.

"Well Sir, this is where it gets really interesting. When we finally got him out of the ice chunk that we has in, Green was moving his arm and felt a pulse. We ran some tests, well those that we could with the minimal equipment we had on board and realized that he was still alive. From what I can remember about what the super serum did to him back in the 40's, it must have helped him survive the initial impact the plane made. Add on the freezing temperatures in the Atlantic, his body temp dropped to the perfect level that allowed him to survive all these decades later. Once we get the chamber secured, Director Fury is having us send him down to the medical team to try and thaw him out. So who knows Sir, you might actually be able to talk to your hero in the flesh within a weeks' time."

Stepping back, Coulson watched as the team started to move wires and straps, making sure the chamber was secured to the gurney that someone had brought in whilst he was preoccupied with the Captain. He walked down the ramp, following the men in front as they made their way back to the elevator. Allowing them to take it first, he pulled out his phone to make a call. The line rang a few times when Fury answered.

"So, what do you think?" the Director asked. Coulson could hear the smirk in the older man's voice. But before he could answer, another voice spoke up. Maria Hill's voice came through the line, "Did he faint?!"

"No, I did not faint. Give me a little credit Hill." Coulson shot back.

Laughing Fury responded, "Ha, told ya! You owe me $50 Hill." Coulson could hear the woman grumbling on the other end of the line, plus the distinct sound of bills shuffling and exchanging hands.

"So, what's your plan if the medical team is successful in thawing him out and him surviving?" Coulson asked as he stepped onto the elevator car that had just returned. As the door closed, Fury's response came.

"Well, if they manage to do what I hope they can, we might actually be able to get this Avengers Initiative off the ground. Him plus Stark and your two crazy ninja's we might actually be able to do something more here."

"I don't know about Barton and Romanoff Sir, you know they don't like working with a team. Hell, you remember at the beginning, Romanoff flat out refused to work anything but solo missions until she started to trust Barton. Plus, if she says no, good luck trying to get Barton to abandon his partner, those two are a package deal and you know it."

"True, but knowing you Phil, you'll be able to convince them otherwise."

"I'll do my best, but no guarantees." He replied. After a pause Coulson spoke.

"Sir, if I may ask a favour?"

"What's on your mind Coulson?"

As the elevator doors opened again and he stepped out, heading back towards his office, he asked the one question he hadn't been able to stop thinking about since he laid eyes on Steve Rogers.

"What do you think the chances are that you'll let me help with his new costume designs?"
