Chapter 44: Rebel Assault
In Yavin 4...
Lisa wore an orange pilot suit and a white helmet as she prepared to go on her X-wing.
The blonde haired girl notice a familiar astromech droid walking forward with Ferus, Zack, Gwen and R2-KT.
Zack and Gwen wore matching pilot suits as well since they were going to help their 'cousin' and Hera.
"Artoo!"Lisa gasped with a smile.
Artoo went up to Lisa and let out happy beeps.
"How you've been?"Lisa asked as she stroked Artoo's head. "I was still little when you last saw me."
Artoo gave the blonde haired girl a positive respond.
"Senator Organa accepted my idea of Artoo helping you against Grand Admiral Thrawn's forces."Ferus explained.
"That's awesome."Lisa chuckled. "Thanks, dad."
"We better get going."Zack reminded.
"Alright, but do be careful out there."Ferus warned. "May the Force be with all of you."
Lisa, Zack and Gwen nodded in agreement.
R2-KT gives Gwen a little zap on the leg.
"Ow!"Gwen growled. "Quit zapping me! We're going!"
R2-KT let out a grumpy beep as she and Artoo followed the three pilots.
Ferus let out a small chuckle at the sight.
His daughter's angry attitude reminded him of Nadia as a young jedi during the Clone Wars.
In Space...
A squadron of T-65B X-wing starfighters appeared led by General Hera and her astromech droid Chopper.
"All right, let's make this count."Hera stated. "Lothal's depending on us. Remember, the Imperial fuel depot is our primary target."
"Presuming we get past this blockade."Zack mumbled.
"They might have numbers, but we've got skill."Gwen complemented.
"That last part goes double for me, sis."Zack replied.
Chopper let out a beep.
"Yes Chopper, triple for you."Hera added. "Lock S-foils in attack position."
Lisa, Zack, Gwen and the other pilots lock their S-foils in attack position.
"Fighter group, stay with your wingmen and punch a hole in their defences."Hera ordered. "We have to get the Y-wings through."
In the Chimaera...
"So the rebels have come at last."Thrawn said as he walked into the bridge.
"Twenty-four ships, Grand Admiral."Woldar reported. "Mixed group of fighters and bombers."
"Their target will be our factory and the fuel depot in the Capital."Thrawn complemented. "Alert all commands, deploy the fleet in defensive formation and launch fighters."
Woldar walked away as Thrawn looked at Commander Skerris.
"Commander, the rebels must not reach the planet's surface."Thrawn ordered.
"I'll make sure of it, sir."Commander Skerris replied.
In Space...
The TIE fighters get launched towards the rebel pilots.
"Are you ready for this, Artoo?"Lisa asked.
Artoo let out a confident happy beep.
"Here we go!"Hera warned. "Attack speed!"
Then the squadron of T-65B X-wing starfighters started battling against the TIE fighters.
In Lothal...
The siren wailed around in the area where the turrets were.
The Spectres Ezra, Sabine, Zeb and Kanan plant explosives on the turrets of the air defences installed to protect the Imperial Armory Complex.
"You sure these explosives are strong enough?"Zeb asked.
"Yeah, they'll do the trick."Sabine assured. "Why?"
"It's just that these gun towers look a lot bigger up close."Zeb stated.
Ezra, Sabine, Zeb and Kanan carefully moved to the other side of the turret that they put explosives on.
"Ryder, what's your status?"Ezra asked while holding his comlink.
"We're setting our last charges now."Ryder answered. "Meet you at the rendezvous."
"Copy."Ezra stated. "We have one more tower to go."
"Hera will be here any minute."Sabine said.
In Space...
The X-wings shoot down many TIE fighters.
"Phoenix Two, you've got the wingman."Hera ordered.
"Already on it, General."Mart assured.
"Nice shot."Hera commented. "Phoenix Four and Five, thin out those ties at point three."
"Copy, Phoenix Leader."Gwen responded. "Try to keep up, Zack."
"I'm right behind you!"Zack reminded.
Gwen and Zack thin out the Imperials before they fired them down.
"Good shot!"Zack chuckled.
As the two pilots shoot down TIEs, Vult Skerris entered the fray in his gold-striped TIE/D Defender Elite.
"Three more incoming!"Lisa warned with a frown. "The one in the defender is Skerris!"
"Move to the right, Phoenix 3."Hera ordered. "I'll cut them off!"
Lisa made her X-Wing to fly to the right and fire down three more TIE fighters.
Hera's X-Wing takes out both of Skerris wingmen.
"Syndulla."Skerris retorted.
In Lothal...
The turrets on Lothal began firing just as Zeb places the last explosives on the tower.
"You good?"Ezra asked.
"Last one."Zeb responded as he walked forward.
"All right, hop on."Ezra instructed.
"That's not how this works."Zeb replied with a smirk.
"Hey!"Ezra complained.
"Hop on."Zeb mumbled.
Zeb yanked Ezra out of the driver's seat and putting him on the back of the bike and sitting in the seat himself.
The rebels took off in their speed bikes.
Then Sabine pressed a detonator, setting off the explosives and causing the towers to neatly collapse in on themselves.
Governor Arihnda Pryce reported to Thrawn via hologram that her air defenses have been destroyed.
"My air defenses have been compromised."Governor Pryce scowled.
"I am aware."Thrawn answered. "An impressive level of coordination, though not unexpected."
"The factory is vulnerable."Govenor Pryce said.
"Oh, on the contrary, Governor, it's quite safe."Thrawn commented. "I won't allow a single rebel ship through my blockade."
In Space...
Skerris pursued Hera, but was unable to land a hit.
"Still no good, he's too fast."Hera muttered. "Hang on, Chop! I've got an idea."
Hera leads the Imperial ace towards the Chimaera causing Skerris to wonder where she was going.
"Where are you going?"Skerris questioned.
Suddenly the gunners of the Chimaera open fire to take down both Hera and Skerris' shields.
Chopper let out a nervous beep.
"He has no shields, we have no shields."Hera stated. "Tighten your bolts. Here we go."
Thrawn approached the windows and sees Hera and Skerris fly past.
Hera fired upon the Chimaera's scanning array, creating a cloud of smoke, and she closes her attack foils and flies through.
Skerris loses track of her in the smoke and, due to his fighter's larger profile, was forced to fly around the scanning array.
Hera turns her fighter around and when Skerris appears, she fires upon him, catching him by surprise and takes off two of his Elite's wings.
Skerris spiralled out of control and screamed as his fighter crashed into a light cruiser.
"She got him!"Mart remarked.
Gwen chuckled. "Awesome."
The cruiser's magazine was damaged by the strike causing it to begin exploding and veer out of control.
It crashed into a Star Destroyer, shearing off the bridge superstructure.
Lisa gritted her teeth when she felt a few TIE fighters hit her X-Wing from behind causing her laser cannons to go offline.
"Artoo!"Lisa called out. "Check if you can lock it down!"
Artoo descends inside the X-wing and repaired the ship's circuits and systems.
Lisa smirked before flying towards the TIE Fighters in quick speed.
With the ship's cannons restored, Lisa was able to shoot down and destroy several TIE fighters.
Zack watched Lisa's piloting skills with an impressed expression before taking out a few TIE fighters himself.
"Hera!"Lisa called out. "We've got our opening!"
"Good job, Lisa."Hera responded. "This is it! All wings, form up and head for the target!"
The rebel pilots began heading towards Lothal.
In the Chimaera...
"The rebel forces have broken through our perimeter."Woldar reported.
"Regrettable, but a testament to Captain Syndulla's skill as a combat pilot."Thrawn admitted. "Contact the second wave and order them to intercept."
In the Sky of Lothal...
Hera and her pilots entered the clouds in Lothal's atmosphere.
"Phoenix Leader, I'm picking up enemy fighters at point three."Mart warned.
"We got incoming, General!"Gwen shouted.
The rebel pilots get attacked by a large number of TIEs, already firing their cannons.
Outside Lothal City...
The Spectres rendezvous with Ryder and Jai Kell.
"We should be seeing them any minute now."Ezra said with a hint of worry.
"There, look!"Sabine stated. "Here they come!"
Ezra and Sabine look through electrobinoculars to see the Rebel fighters being shot down and destroyed.
"What are those?"Ezra asked nervously.
"Is that...the entire attack force."Sabine answered with a hint of shock.
Ezra notice two X-Wings crushing in separate sides of the wilderness.
"Hang on."Ezra said. "Two pilots crashed into the wilderness."
"Must be Zack and Gwen!"Sabine admitted. "Come on!"
In the Chimaera...
"Grand Admiral, the entire rebel strike force was destroyed."Woldar reported. "However, reports indicate that a few ships managed to crash land in or near Capital City, including the one flown by the flight leader."
"And the Imperial factory?"Thrawn asked.
"Undamaged, sir."Woldar answered.
Thrawn contacts Rukh via hologram.
"Rukh. Rebel pilots may have survived the attack."Thrawn warned. "Capture them alive, if possible. Captain Syndulla in particular."
"It will be done, Grand Admiral."Rukh responded.
Jai carefully takes out Gwen and R2-KT from their broken X-Wing while Ryder helped Zack out from his ship before bringing them to the Spectres.
"You guys, alright?"Zeb asked.
"Yeah."Zack responded and rubbed his shoulder. "We're okay."
"Wish we can say the same for the others."Gwen said softly.
Ezra notice his comlink beeping causing him to respond.
"Ezra?"Lisa's voice spoke up. "Are Zack and Gwen with you?"
"They're fine."Ezra answered and became concerned. "Wait, where are you?"
"I crushed into the capital city!"Lisa admitted. "But there are Imperial Forces heading here!"
"Don't worry."Ezra assured firmly. "I'll come and get you."
Sabine sees Imperial gunships coming to the plains.
"We've got gunships, incoming!"Sabine warned.
"Hera!"Kanan shouted in his comlink. "Hera, do you read me? Hera!"
"We have to go before they spot us."Ryder stated.
Ezra notice his master not moving causing him to walk up to him.
"Kanan, we need to go."Ezra reminded. "We will find them. I promise."
In Lothal City...
Lisa used the Force to bring Artoo out of her damaged X-Wing.
"Artoo, are you okay?"Lisa asked worriedly.
Artoo let out a small but unhappy beep.
"I know."Lisa retorted. "I screwed up our ship."
The blonde haired girl became alarmed when she notice a spotlight heading their way.
"We gotta go!"Lisa whispered harshly. "This way!"
The female jedi and her astromech droid began venturing down the darker side of the streets as imperial forces arrived in the area where their ship crushed into.
On the Highway...
Kanan, Ezra, Sabine, Zeb, Ryder, Jai, Zack and Gwen head away from the capital on their speeder bikes.
Zack was on a extra speeder bike with his sister at the back and holding him by the waist.
Kanan stops his speeder bike causing his friends to do the same.
"I'm going back."Kanan stated. "I have to do this."
"I understand."Ezra said sadly. "We'll see you back at base."
Zack and Gwen looked at each other before going off their bike.
R2-KT let out a disproval beep and went off the bike as well.
"Take our bike, Ezra."Zack insisted.
Ezra gives the Aomori twins a thankful look before going on the speeder bike and taking off with Kanan.
"We should..."Sabine started.
Zack powers off R2-KT before tying her at the back of Ryder's back with a rope.
"If anyone can save Hera and Lisa, they can."Zack admitted.
Zack goes on Ryder's bike while Gwen goes on Jai's before they took off with the rest.
At the Imperial Complex...
Governor Pryce meets up with Rukh, who had captured one Rebel pilot.
"Well done, assassin."Govenor Pryce stated. "Take him away for interrogation."
Two stormtroopers took the rebel pilot away as a Stormtrooper Commander walked up to Governor Pryce.
"Governor Pryce, we found the flight leader's ship in the Eastern district, but there's no sign of the pilot or astromech."the Stormtrooper Commander reported.
"Hera Syndulla."Governor Pryce said in realisation. "Lock down the entire district and tear it apart, building by building, until you find her."
"Yes, Governor."the Stormtrooper Commander answered.
In Lothal City...
Artoo gives Lisa a questioning beep as they walked into the dark streets and hid behind a bunch of crates.
"We're going to find Hera and any other survivors."Lisa replied.
Lisa notice Artoo activating his life form scanner before he beeped at her.
"You can't scan?"Lisa said with a small frown. "Not a surprise. This city is on lockdown."
Artoo beeped at the blonde haired girl.
"And yes, I know it's dangerous."Lisa complemented. "But I still have my lightsabers with me."
"Stop!"A stormtrooper's voice rang out. "What are you doing?!"
Lisa and Artoo sees Hera ambushing Hera on a nearby troop transport.
Mart knocks down one of the troopers and steal a blaster, which he uses to shoot another.
Hera made the troop transport run over the third stormtrooper.
Lisa and Artoo runs up to Mart as Hera came out of the troop transport.
"Mart, are you okay?"Lisa asked.
"I think so."Mart answered. "I'm in one piece, anyway."
Chopper beeped at Artoo before giving a beep at Hera.
"Thanks, Chop."Hera responded and looked at Mart. "I'm sorry about your astromech. But if we're gonna get through this, I need that droid's transmitter so that Chopper can send a signal to get us help."
"That's okay."Mart assured. "R3 would want to help us."
Artoo beeped sadly at the damaged R3-A3 causing Lisa to tap his head.
Hera gets to work as Mart and Lisa stands guard.
"Are Zack and Gwen alive, Lisa?"Hera asked.
"They are, Hera."Lisa responded. "They crash landed where Kanan and the others were."
Hera finished replacing Chopper's transmitter.
"There."Hera said as she stood up. "How's that?"
Chopper beeped and grunted.
"The Empire must be jamming all frequencies."Hera commented. "Well, we'll try again once we get out of the city."
Lisa suddenly felt a disturbance in the Force causing her to quickly activate her blue lightsaber to reflect the lasers that were fired from Rukh's staff.
"We got company."Lisa scowled.
"Mart, Lisa, Chopper...Go!"Hera ordered as she took out her blaster.
Hera, Lisa, Chopper, Artoo and Mart began running away from Rukh.
"Where are we going?"Mart asked.
"Chop, scan for the nearest sewer hatch."Hera answered. "We've got to find cover."
Chopper finds the direction and began leading the way through the city streets.
Rukh swiftly descends to street level and attacks, quickly disarming Mart and kicking him into Hera.
Lisa uses the Force with her free hand to hold Rukh before Chopper and Artoo used their electro-shock prods to prevent the assassin from attacking.
As Mart shoots at him, Rukh retreated to the rooftop.
Lisa helps Hera up and hands her back the small blaster.
"We need to go get out of here, Hera."Lisa commented.
Hera, Mart, Lisa and Artoo follow Chopper through the streets.
"Chopper, where's that hatch?"Hera questioned.
Chopper looked around the corner to discover it was guarded by stormtroopers and an AT-DP.
The walker was standing directly on the hatch.
"Don't tell me."Hera said sarcastically. "That's the hatch."
"Great."Lisa mumbled.
"Got any other options?"Mart asked.
"There's no time for anything else."Hera stated. "They're closing in. We're going to have to get that thing to move."
Lisa notice a landspeeder parked in the street causing a smirk to grow on her face.
"I'm good at distractions, but I need help."Lisa responded.
Hera and Mart looked at each other.
Artoo let out a deep beep while shaking his head.
Mart and Lisa walked out into view of the four stormtroopers guarding the hatch.
"Hey, I heard you guys are looking for rebel pilots."Mart said smugly. "Looks like you found two."
"Don't move!"A stormtrooper demanded.
Mart shoots one of the troopers.
The three stormtroopers return fire and Lisa activated her lightsabers to block the lasers from them.
"Not a good way to treat a lady and her companion, gentlemen."Lisa taunted.
Mart and Lisa run for cover.
"This is LS-757!"A Stormtrooper reported. "We've spotted a rebel and a jedi in sector 5-1-5!"
The stormtroopers and the AT-DP began pursuing Mart and Lisa.
Hera ran to another part of the street.
"Get that hatch open, Chop!"Hera ordered.
Chopper flew down from the roof and plugged into the port at the sewer hatch as Hera takes the controls of the parked landspeeder.
Mart and Lisa hid among several large crates as the walker moved past and the stormtrooper looked behind them.
Mart took the opportunity to grab a stormtrooper and knocks him out while the other two stormtroopers began approaching where Lisa was.
"Now Artoo!"Lisa ordered.
Artoo went in front of Lisa and activated his fire extinguisher to blind the stormtroopers helmets before Lisa slashed them down using her lightsabers.
The walker began to turn around as Hera approached in the speeder and rams the walker, knocking it over.
The speeder gets destroyed by the collapsing walker and Hera climbed on top of it.
"Go, go!"Hera ordered. "I'll catch up!"
Mart and Lisa nodded before running off with Artoo.
When the AT-DP's driver emerged, Hera stuns him.
Mart, Lisa and Artoo arrived at the sewer hatch, just in time to see Chopper open it.
Hera runs toward the hatch, but as she does, Rukh approached across the rooftops.
"Hera, look out!"Lisa shouted.
Rukh jumped Hera and knocks her down, but she kicks him off.
The two started fighting in hand to hand combat.
Lisa tried to run forward, but Mart grabbed her by the arm.
"We have to help her!"Lisa protested.
"Lisa, they're coming!"Mart reminded.
Lisa notice two hover tanks arriving, cutting off Hera from the hatch.
"Go!"Hera ordered. "That's an order!"
Mart and a hurtful Lisa heads down the ladder and Artoo activated his rocket booster to follow after them.
Chopper remained in the opening, not wanting to leave his close friend behind.
"I said go, Chop!"Hera demanded.
Hera shoots the astromech socket controlling the hatch.
Chopper goes down the hatch before the door closed and the stormtroopers approached.
Rukh disarmed Hera before shoving her to her knees and holding his electrostaff to her back.
A gunship arrived and Governor Pryce disembarked from it.
"Governor Pryce, I've so wanted to meet you."Hera said.
"Such a small victory."Governor Pryce replied grimly.
Govenor Pryce stuns Hera and she falls to the ground, unconscious.
In the Sewers...
Mart, Lisa, Chopper and Artoo follow the starbirds to a hatch.
"Think this hatch is locked?"Mart asked.
"I hope not."Lisa answered simply.
Then the hatch opened, revealing Kanan and Ezra.
"Come on."Kanan instructed. "Let's get you both out of here."
"Kanan."Mart replied.
"And Ezra."Lisa said with a hint of amusement.
Kanan helped Mart out while Ezra reached his hand out to bring Lisa up.
Artoo and Chopper flew up using their rocket boosters.
Ezra looked at Lisa.
"Where's Hera?"Ezra asked.
"She got captured while saving us."Lisa admitted with a hint of guilt.
Chopper let out a sad beep.
"I know she did, Chop."Kanan responded. "I know."
Artoo gives Chopper a comforting beep.
"Kanan, we're so sorry."Mart apologised.
"It's all right, Mart."Kanan assured. "There's nothing you could have done. But there is something I can do."
The five rebels set off on Kanan and Ezra's speeder bikes as a Loth-wolf watched them go.
