Chapter 46: DUME
Lisa quietly stood with Zack, Gwen, Artoo and R2-KT as they and the Spectres meet up with Ryder's cell including Mart and Jai, who were listening to a HoloNet transmission by Imperial broadcaster Alton Kastle.
"The insurgency on Lothal is over. After a brazen attack on Capital City, the rebels have been crushed. Their leadership, defeated."Alton reported. "To honour the Imperial heroes that valiantly fought to save you from these extremists, all citizens are required to attend a celebration and parade in Capital City. A new day for Lothal has begun."
"Turn it off."Sabine ordered with a glare.
Matt nodded and placed off the HoloNet.
"We have to contact rebel command."Ryder spoke up. "We need reinforcements."
"Well, as far as Yavin is concerned, this fight is over."Ezra replied. "Mon Mothma won't commit more forces to Lothal, not after this."
Ryder looked at Hera, who held the Kalikori in her hands.
"General Syndulla."Ryder said. "Hera, what do you think?"
Hera didn't say anything and walked past the group without saying a word nor even looking at anyone.
"She just needs time."Ezra suggested.
"Well, we don't have time."Ryder said. "We need a plan."
"Well, I have a plan."Sabine stated. "The Empire's gonna have a parade? Good. I'm gonna go add some fireworks to their celebration."
"Count me in."Zeb responded.
"Us too."Zack requested.
Gwen nodded. "Yeah."
Sabine walked away with Zeb, Zack and Gwen following her from behind.
R2-KT beeped quietly as she followed after the Aomori twins.
Jai looked at Ezra.
"Well, what should we do?"Jai asked.
Ezra simply shook his head and walked away.
"There's nothing we can do."Ryder answered sadly. "It's over."
Lisa looked down quietly as Artoo let out a sad beep.
Sabine, Zeb, Zack, Gwen and R2-KT ride away on speeder bikes as a distraught Ezra sits on a rock.
"You didn't prepare me for this, Kanan."Ezra commented quietly. "What do I do now?"
A large white Loth-wolf approached Ezra and growled fiercely at him.
"I guess you know about Kanan too, then?"Ezra asked.
The Loth-wolf started growling even more.
"Whoa! What's wrong?!"Ezra demanded nervously. "There was nothing I could do!"
The wolf was joined by two smaller black ones, who chase Ezra into the tall grass.
The wolves passed Ezra and disappear into the grass.
"I don't know what you want!"Ezra protested.
Ezra began to run back, but was knocked unconscious by one of the smaller wolves.
The alpha white wolf loomed over Ezra, who was lying on his face.
Lisa walked quietly by herself as Artoo followed her from behind.
Artoo beeped a respond causing the blonde haired girl to look at him.
"No, Artoo."Lisa responded with a glare. "I'm not afraid. I'm angry...very angry."
Lisa bend down to look at Artoo.
"I know being angry and wanting revenge is not the jedi way and leads to the dark side. But sometimes it's hard."Lisa admitted with a hurtful look. "First Ahsoka and now Kanan? The Empire is trying to destroy all of the rebellion by taking the people important to us and not just enslaving the whole galaxy."
Artoo beeped at Lisa, understanding what she meant.
"I don't want my own family and more people that I know to get hurt."Lisa stated as she stood up.
Artoo looked at Lisa and let out a quiet beep.
"I know. It is scary, Artoo."Lisa said and looked up the sky. "But once the Empire is gone, I promise to honour the people that risked their lives for the rebellion. So that the people of the next generation will honour and never forgot them."
Sabine, Zeb, Zack and Gwen stood on a ledge overlooking the Capital City of Lothal as R2-KT stood next to their speeder bikes.
"So what do you see?"Zeb asked.
Sabine looked through her macrobinocular to check the city more closely.
"Well, the parade has begun."Sabine replied. "And there are so many people there. Look how much the Empire has grown."
Zeb, Zack and Gwen each took a turn to look through the macrobinocular.
"But that's why we're here, right?"Gwen questioned. "To reduce their numbers?"
"We couldn't beat them with the help of the Rebel Alliance."Sabine reminded. "And there are so few of us left. I mean, how can we beat them now?"
"You don't see anything strange about the city?"Zeb asked.
"Uh, besides the refinery being on fire?"Sabine suggested.
"Wait, Zeb is right."Zack admitted. "The factories aren't belching smoke. This never happened."
"True, but that's probably just because of the parade."Sabine commented.
"The Empire doesn't give days off, Sabine."Zeb stated.
"Huh."Sabine said and looked through her macrobinocular again. "Now that is interesting."
The four rebels then stood up and walked away to head to their speeder bikes.
Ezra walked by himself at night in the middle of the wilderness.
The blue haired boy called out for the loth-wolves to show themselves.
"What happened?! I know you're out there!"Ezra shouted. "Show yourselves!"
There was no respond causing Ezra to let out a sigh.
"I better get back to base while I can."Ezra responded.
On Capital City's Highway...
Zeb knocked out a scout trooper with a king-hit.
"I needed that."Zeb chuckled and cracked his knuckles.
R2-KT let out a mischievous beep.
"Poor guy."Gwen mocked with a smirk.
Sabine planted a device on his 614-AvA speeder bike that allowed her to connect to the Imperial network on Lothal.
"Connecting to the Imperial network in three, two, one."Sabine counted.
The device let out a beep.
"I'm in."Sabine stated.
"So what's with the factory?"Zack asked.
"The TIE defender factory was shut down."Sabine answered. "It took serious damage when the fuel depot blew up. Guys, Kanan didn't just save us. He completed the mission."
"Then why is the Empire celebrating?"Zeb questioned.
"I'll bet because Pryce doesn't want anyone to know."Sabine complemented. "Instead of admitting we hurt them..."
"She sent all their workers to a parade."Zeb finished.
"I doubt Thrawn will be fooled by this."Zack replied.
"He would probably deal with Pryce when he returns."Gwen sneered and looked at Sabine. "So what is our next move, Sabine?"
"The Empire and us, we're not even yet."Sabine answered.
Sabine places a detonator beneath the scout trooper's speeder bike.
The four rebels and R2-KT went on their speed bikes to return where they were before.
Not long after, the group spotted an explosion from the distance.
"Hmm, that was fast."Sabine said.
"Well, you wanted to send a message."Zeb chuckled.
"I can do better that."Sabine assured.
Zack checked through the macrobinocular to check where the explosion and spotted Rukh in the area.
"Ugh, it's that creep again."Zack scowled.
"You mean the little henchman of Thrawn?"Gwen suggested.
"The one and only."Zack retorted sarcastically.
"Wait a minute."Sabine replied. "Ezra told us about that thing."
Zack handed the macrobinocular to Zeb.
"You're right."Zeb agreed. "I remember now. When we were recovering the hyperdrive, that thing came sniffling over to us."
Zeb looked through the macrobinocular, only for Rukh's eyes to fell on him.
"Ah!"Zeb shouted in shock. "It looked right at me!"
"Did it see you?"Sabine asked.
"I don't know!"Zeb panicked.
"Well, look and see."Gwen requested.
"I don't want to."Zeb responded in fright. "It's got creepy eyes."
"Oh, give me those."Sabine said and took the macrobinocular. "Oh, boy, it's coming this way."
"Wonderful."Zack scoffed.
R2-KT let out a nervous beep.
"You're right."Zeb agreed. "And the closer it gets, the uglier it gets. But-"
"But what?"Sabine asked.
"At least it's alone."Zeb commented.
"What do you mean?"Sabine questioned.
"I mean, we can even the score."Zeb admitted. "They took Kanan from us. We take something from them."
"Of course."Gwen remarked smugly. "That is fair."
"I agree with you, only because we can't let it track us back to base."Sabine responded. "Now, since we outnumber it, let's use that to our advantage."
Zack nodded as he and his companions took off in their speeder bikes.
Meanwhile...
A lost Ezra sits under a Lothalian mound while repeating a riddle.
"Loth-rat, Loth-cat, Loth-wolf run, pick a path and all is done."Ezra repeated. "Pick a path and all is done..."
Not long after, Ezra fell asleep where he sat.
The Bridger Boy then heard breathing behind him.
"Kanan?"Ezra asked.
Ezra turned around, only to get shocked to see a Loth-Wolf and notice he was surrounded by a pack of Loth-wolves.
"Who are you?"Ezra questioned.
"I Am Dume."the Lead Loth-Wolf replied.
"Dume."Ezra said as he stood up. "That was my master's name. What do you want from me?"
"You ran."Dume said.
"Yeah, the wolves were chasing me!"Ezra answered.
"Why?"Dume demanded.
"I didn't mean to run, I just I feel lost without my master."Ezra explained as he sat on his knees. "He was wise and brave. And he cared. He was there for me when no one else was. There was so much more I needed to learn from him."
"Fear..."Dume whispered.
"I am afraid! All right?"Ezra cried. "I'm afraid. Everything seems so hopeless now."
"Fight."Dume responded.
"How?"Ezra asked.
"Together."Dume answered.
A Loth-Wolf brought forward a carved stone which was from the Lothal Jedi Temple.
"This stone."Ezra said and looked at Dume. "Where's it from?"
"Jedi Temple."Dume replied.
Somewhere in the Wilderness...
Rukh approached Zeb on his speeder bike.
Zeb stood his ground while holding out his bo-rifle and Rukh charged forward with his electrostaff.
As the two fought, Zack, Gwen and R2-KT hid behind a rock to wait for the right moment.
Sabine leapt down and cornered Rukh from behind.
"We're not in the mood for a fair fight today."Sabine commented.
"Neither am I."Rukh answered with a smirk.
Rukh activated his sinrich optical dephaser causing him to become invisble.
Then a cloaked Rukh attacked Zeb.
Sabine used the Rangefinder inside her helmet to find Rukh and shoot at him with her blaster.
Rukh dodged Sabine with superhuman reflexes and climbed a rock pillar.
The Assassin leaped at Sabine, knocking out her helmet.
Gwen attempted to go forward, but Zack stopped her.
"We should go in now."Gwen suggested.
"Not yet."Zack reminded.
Zeb continued fighting Rukh, who almost choked him.
Sabine planted and detonated a paint bomb on Rukh, neutralizing his cloaking device.
"Can you see him now?"Sabine asked.
Zeb chuckled. "Oh yeah."
"Now!"Zack stated.
Zack and Gwen rushed forward to use the force to pin Rukh down.
With the tables turned, Zeb proceeded to beat Rukh to death.
R2-KT remained hidden in the rock pillar while beeping nervously.
"This is...for Kanan!"Zeb shouted.
"Guys!"Sabine protested as she rushed forward. "Stop! Stop right now!"
Zack and Gwen released Rukh from their force grip as Zeb stopped beating the Noghri to death.
"Why Sabine?"Gwen asked.
"We thought you wanted to get even."Zack reminded.
"I do, but this isn't how we do it."Sabine responded.
"But what are we gonna do with him now?"Zeb questioned.
"I've got an idea."Sabine admitted as she took out her paint spray.
R2-KT beeped quietly as she went up to the rebels.
"Yes, KT."Gwen answered. "We're going to do this the rebel way. Not the imperial's."
Ezra explained to Dume and the Loth-Wolves of the events that recently happened.
"We accidentally led the Empire to the Jedi temple."Ezra explained. "We escaped, but they captured it."
"Danger."Dume snarled.
"Well, then the Empire's still there!"Ezra stated.
"Secrets within."Dume responded.
"Secrets?"Ezra asked. "What secrets? What else is inside the temple?"
"Knowledge...Destruction."Dume admitted.
"Ahsoka said we'd find knowledge in the Sith temple on Malachor."Ezra commented. "But we were wrong. That's when everything changed."
"Restore...Past."Dume whispered. "Redeem Future."
"How?"Ezra asked. "How do I do this? Tell me."
Dume started snarling at Ezra.
"No, no..."Ezra said.
Dume opened his mouth to devour Ezra.
"KANAN!"Ezra yelled out in fright.
Ezra woke up and found himself back to the part of the wilderness where he stood.
"Ezra?"
Ezra turned around and saw Lisa and Artoo walking up to him.
"You okay?"Lisa asked. "Hera told me to check on you."
"I'm fine."Ezra responded and rubbed the back of his head. "I was just lost in my thoughts."
"I'm sorry."Lisa apologised.
Ezra didn't say anything as he looked down and Lisa notice something on the floor.
"What is that?"Lisa questioned.
Ezra notice the carved stone that the Loth-Wolves showed him.
"A part from Lothal's Jedi Temple."Ezra replied.
"No way."Lisa said in surprise. "How did it get here?"
Artoo beeped as he walked forward and Ezra looked at Lisa.
"I'll explain to you later."Ezra assured and placed his hand on Artoo's head.
Sabine and Gwen finished painting Rukh with orange and pink colour.
Then Zeb placed the unconscious painted Rukh on his speeder bike.
R2-KT let out a giggling beep at the sight.
"Nice work of design by the way."Zack joked.
"Thanks."Sabine responded. "I think this is the best message we can send to the Empire right now."
"It is better than getting your hands dirty."Gwen agreed.
Zeb kicked the speeder bike away as Sabine glanced at him.
"Hey, you set the homing beacon, right?"Sabine asked.
"Yeah."Zeb lied. "Well, I think I did."
Zack and Gwen looked at each other.
Sabine frowned. "Zeb."
"No, I did."Zeb assured. "I did."
"Unbelievable."Sabine commented. "Did you just see how much me and Gwen worked on that thing?"
Zack and Gwen quietly laughed as the two of them and R2-KT followed Zeb and Sabine.
In the Lothal Cliff Dwelling...
Hera fits a small piece from Kanan's holocron onto the Kalikori in honour of her lover.
"For Kanan, so he'll always be remembered as a part of my family."Hera said and looked at Chopper. "You know, Chop, despite all his misgivings about the rebellion, he always believed we could change things."
Chopper beeped in agreement.
"That's what I'll miss the most that when none of us could find the answer, Kanan could and always in the most unexpected way."Hera admitted.
Hera and Chopper came out of the cliff as Sabine, Zeb, Zack, Gwen and R2-KT returned back to the base.
"Was your mission a success?"Hera asked.
"No, but yours was."Sabine admitted with a smile. "The TIE defender factories have shut down. We didn't fail, Hera. Kanan made sure of it. In their attempt to destroy us, the Empire blew up their own refinery."
"They have no fuel for the factories."Zeb remarked. "Their entire production line has stopped."
"This definitely turn things around for us."Zack chuckled lightly.
"All this happened thanks to Kanan."Gwen stated with a small smile.
"Then we have a chance."Hera said in realisation. "We can still beat them."
Ezra, Lisa and Artoo walked up to their companions.
"As long as we stick together."Lisa complemented.
"And I know what our first mission is."Ezra stated as he held out the carved stone. "The Jedi temple is in danger and we're the only ones who can do anything about it."
