Chapter 47: Wolves and a Door
A loth-cat climbed onto the back of a loth-wolf watching the Lothal cliff dwelling where the Spectres rebel cell were meeting.
"All right Ezra, you have our attention, now explain what's going on."Hera instructed.
"This stone came from the Jedi Temple here on Lothal."Ezra responded.
Zack and Gwen looked at each other with surprised expressions.
"That's far to the north, how did it get here?"Hera asked.
"The Lothwolves gave it to me."Ezra replied. "They think the Empire is doing something terrible there."
Zeb let out a chuckle.
"Okay, wait, they think?"Zeb questioned smugly. "What, did they talk to you?"
"Well, just the one."Ezra answered.
"I wish they told you what these symbols mean."Sabine commented. "But, mmm, maybe I could make more sense of them if I saw the temple up close."
"No doubt, there will be a few imperials around."Zack reminded.
"I agree, we have to go."Ezra stated. "I don't want the Empire putting their hands all over the Temple."
"So let's stop them."Hera suggested and became a bit sad. "For Kanan."
Gwen nodded as Lisa looked quietly at the hand symbols in the stone.
"These symbols almost look like they're connected to something."Lisa thought with a firm look.
"There's just one problem."Sabine admitted. "As Hera said, the Temple is far to the north and we don't have a ship."
"I can get us there."Ezra assured.
Artoo and R2-KT beeped responds at Zack and Gwen.
"You two stay here with Ryder."Zack instructed. "We can't let the Empire see either of you. Especially you, Artoo."
"Make sure none of you cause any trouble while we're gone."Gwen warned.
Artoo beeped positively while R2-KT let out a grumpy beep.
Outside the cliff dwelling, Ezra used the Force to summon the loth-wolves.
The loth-wolves led by a white wolf approached the rebels.
Lisa, Zack and Gwen remained calm as the wolves began approaching them.
The lead wolf went up to Ezra.
"We're ready, can you take us?"Ezra asked.
The white wolf nodded and bend down as Ezra went on it's back.
Hera, Zack and Lisa went on the backs of the Loth-wolves.
"This is amazing."Lisa complemented as she went on the back of a wolf. "So you can understand them, Ezra?"
"Well, only the one that can talk."Ezra answered and rubbed the back of his neck.
The other Loth-wolves went up to Sabine, Gwen, Zeb and Chopper.
"I bet they are faster than speeders."Gwen chuckled.
"Well, they got us here in the first place."Sabine replied. "I guess they can get us to the Temple as well."
"I'm just more comfortable with speeders."Zeb said nervously. "Cause..."
Sabine and Gwen went on their wolves as a Loth-Wolf started sniffing at Zeb.
"Hello, my name is Zeb."Zeb laughed nervously.
"Zeb, those ones don't talk."Ezra stated.
"How do you know?"Zeb questioned as he went on the Loth-wolf's back. "It talks, uh, with it's eyes."
The rebels looked quietly at the distance ahead.
"Everyone ready?"Ezra asked and looked at the wolf he was on. "Here we go."
The group began heading to the temple as Chopper grunted in annoyance as Zeb's wolf carried him inside his mouth.
The pack travelled north and passed a pack of loth-cats as they ride under the cover of night.
"How far is it to the temple?"Zeb asked.
"You don't wanna know!"Sabine answered.
"Hold tight!"Ezra ordered.
Lisa hold onto the wolf she was on tightly.
The blonde haired girl remembered before and after she became Queen of Naboo, she used to ride on tusk cats so she wasn't nervous on riding a wolf.
The rebels pass through a hyper tunnel as they hear voices flashing through.
"You want a ride?"
"You don't know us."
"And I don't want to."
"I lost my way for a long time, but now, I have a chance to change things."
"We have hope. Hope that things can get better and they will."
"That was a mistake."
"Why? Because you have no one left to die for you?"
"No, because I have nothing left to fear."
"This is a new day, a new beginning..."
"There's a cost for any action we take now, Ezra. Things are getting worse, just as they did back when I was your age. But back then there were 10,000 Jedi knights protecting the galaxy. Now..."
"There's just you, me, Ferus and Lisa."
The Loth-wolves started howling as Chopper let out a beep.
Lisa slowly opened her eyes and notice her companions were dismounting.
"Hey, did you hear those voices?"Sabine asked.
"I have no idea what just happened."Zeb replied.
Zack looked at Gwen.
"You heard them too, isn't Gwen?"Zack asked.
"Yes."Gwen responded. "How strange."
Chopper got released from the wolf's mouth causing Lisa to chuckle lightly as she got off of the wolf she was on and went next to her companions.
The rebels and and Dume stare down at the valley from a cliff.
"They say the Temple is not far from here, just a bit to the Northwest."Ezra explained. "But we'll have to walk the rest of the way."
"Ezra, how do they do that?"Hera asked in curiosity.
"I don't know."Ezra replied as he stroked the white wolf's head. "Kanan said they're deeply connected to the Force."
"I'm just glad they're on our side."Zeb commented.
"They're on Lothal's side."Ezra said.
"Is there a difference?"Sabine questioned.
"Let's hope not."Ezra answered.
Dume howled before following after the other Loth-wolves.
Ezra looked at Lisa and his friends.
"We should get moving."Ezra suggested.
At dusk, the Spectres arrive at the perimeters of the Lothal Jedi Temple.
The rebels find that the Empire has set up an excavation camp.
"There are so many imperials here."Gwen scoffed in annoyance.
Sabine sees several Rodian and Trandoshan miners at work on the site through her macrobinoculars.
"This is no military operation."Sabine commented. "What are they searching for?"
"Let me take a look."Ezra suggested.
Sabine handed Ezra the macrobinoculars.
"Wait, the doors, they're both gone."Ezra stated. "And it looks like one of them has been cut right off the surface."
"Is this really the temple?"Sabine questioned. "It looks like solid rock."
"It is, Sabine."Lisa responded. "The temple must have sealed itself off."
"Any idea what the Empire wants?"Hera asked.
"No."Ezra answered.
"The Empire must be looking for something here that is useful for them."Zack said with a frown.
"Well, they've uncovered a lot more artwork."Sabine commented. "Maybe I can figure it out if I get a closer look."
"Agreed."Hera replied. "You, Ezra and Lisa go, we'll keep watch from up here."
"Look!"Zeb said with a smirk and pointed at something. "You're gonna need a disguise."
The rebels see four scout troopers heading their way.
When the four scout troopers arrived up in their speeder, they saw a hologram of Thrawn causing them to take out their blasters.
"Identify yourself!"the female scout trooper ordered.
"You misunderstand, Captain, I am not accepting surrenders at this time."Thrawn responded. "Now let us proceed."
"What?"the female scout trooper questioned.
Zeb knocked out the four scout troopers causing Chopper to laugh lightly.
Zack picked up the helmet that belonged to one of the scout troopers and looked at Gwen.
"Go ahead, Zack."Gwen stated simply. "I am not in the mood for dress up."
"You never was."Zack joked.
Sabine, Ezra, Lisa and Zack headed down to the dig site disguised as Scout Troopers.
The disguised rebels parked their speeders next to the others and started walking around to investigate the area.
"Well, they're definitely on to something."Sabine said and looked at a stone artwork. "There's a language here. Not...Not so much in words, but pictures."
"I saw paintings like these inside the temple."Ezra admitted.
"But what do they-"Lisa started.
"Guys, incoming."Zack warned with a bitter tone.
Minster Hydan and two death troopers walked up to the disguised rebels.
"Trooper!"Minster Hydan called out and walked forward. "Get away from there at once! I've said it before, none of you are to touch the artefacts! The tiniest blemish could erase evidence which is critical to understanding the gateway!"
"Gateway?"Ezra said. "I mean, yes, sir, sorry, sir."
"Minister, Coruscant is contacting you."A death trooper reported.
"This conduct reflects poorly on you, Commander."Minster Hydan commented.
"Yes, Minister."Death Trooper answered.
The first death trooper went with the minister while the second death trooper looked at the four rebels.
"All right you four, numbers and clearance codes, now!"Death Trooper ordered.
Lisa opened her helmet and waved her hand at the death trooper.
"You don't need our numbers and clearance."Lisa responded.
"I don't need your numbers and clearance."Death Trooper repeated.
"You'll leave us be."Lisa instructed.
"I'll leave you be."Death Trooper answered.
The four rebels walked away from the death trooper.
Zeb watched his companions using the macrobinoculars.
"That was a close one, who's the old man?"Zeb asked.
"I don't know, I've never seen an Imperial like him."Hera replied.
Hera handed the macrobinoculars to Gwen.
"Wait. That's Minster Veris Hydan."Gwen admitted. "My mum said his one of the advisers of the Emperor, but also a scholar of Jedi and Sith lore and history."
"Thanks for the information, kid."Zeb chuckled.
Sabine, Ezra, Lisa and Zack followed Minister Hydan, who went inside his mobile office.
"Chopper, I need you to reroute the incoming Imperial transmission."Sabine ordered.
Chopper grunted in respond before patching into the incoming transmission.
"We have recently made some remarkable discoveries, my Emperor."Minister Hydan reported.
"We must discover the secrets of the Temple, for even now our enemies move against us."Emperor Palpatine stated.
Shocks looks grew on Sabine, Ezra, Lisa and Zack's faces when they realised the minister was talking to Emperor Palpatine.
"We have reached the roots of the Temple and found some fascinating work."Minister Hydan said. "The symbols and iconography are reminiscent of a report I discovered in the Jedi archives."
"The Mortis Force Wielders?"Emperor Palatine questioned.
"Yes, they are key to unlocking the Temple, I am sure of it."Minister Hydan answered.
"There has been a great disturbance in the Force."Emperor Palpatine stated. "The death of Kanan Jarrus has altered the fate of Lothal, though how I cannot say."
"Perhaps access to the Temple will provide some clarity, my Lord."Minister Hydan suggested.
"We must seize the power within, a conduit between the living and the dead."Emperor Palpatine ordered. "Proceed, Minister Hydan."
Then the transmission ended.
"Between the living and the dead?"Lisa murmured.
"Hera, did you hear?"Sabine asked. "What should we do?"
"I don't like it."Hera replied. "With the Emperor involved it's too dangerous, we should fall back."
"No."Ezra denied. "Because of the Emperor, we have to get involved. We can't let him enter the temple."
"Then they'll crack the code."Sabine added. "It's only a matter of time."
"Exactly."Zack agreed. "All this will likely cause damage to us and the rebellion."
Hera became quiet and had a worried look on her face.
"Hera, remember why we came."Zeb reminded.
"This is what Kanan wants us to do."Gwen said with a small smile.
Hera was in a moment of silence as she was feeling Kanan's presence.
"Go, we'll keep watch."Hera ordered in her comlink. "But I want you four out of there if I give you the order."
"Absolutely."Sabine replied.
"Alright."Zack answered.
"Okay."Lisa said.
"Thanks, Hera."Ezra responded. "Let's go."
"They'll be fine."Zeb assured.
"I used to always believe that."Hera admitted.
"Be careful, Zack, Ezra and Lisa."Gwen thought with a firm look. "Make sure to stay together."
In the Dig Site...
A trooper spoke over the PA Speaker.
"Attention!"A trooper ordered. "There is a safety hazard zone in standing 25 meters from the temple. Special teams are exempt and look out for static charge. All operational departments signal by beeping twice."
Ezra, Lisa, Sabine and Zack walked closely near the other scout troopers.
"We are close to our goal."Minister Hydan stated. "Move the drill into first position. Everyone double shifts, through the night. Mind your priority assignments and stay within your designated areas. Turn the flood lights on!"
The flood lights went on showing the stone wall of very intricate artistry representing the Mortis Force Wielders: the Daughter, the Father, and the Son.
"Whoa."Sabine said in astonishment. "You ever seen anything like this before?"
"Nope, but this Temple is always full of surprises."Ezra admitted.
"Your totally right, Ezra."Lisa whispered.
"This is incredible."Zack mumbled.
A mining guild worker walked up to Minister Hydan.
"Lord Hydan, we have discovered more symbols."A mining guild worker hissed.
"Show me."Minister Hydan insisted.
Minister Hydan followed the mining guild worker.
"Can you make anything out of it?"Ezra asked.
"Mmm, I think so."Sabine replied.
The four rebels walked up to the stone wall.
"Very old, very intricate."Sabine sighed. "Does any of this mean anything to you?"
Ezra and Lisa recognised the Convor on the Daughter's shoulder.
"Well, me and Lisa seen a bird like that before."Ezra said. "Whenever Ahsoka visited us on Atollon, it was always nearby."
"The last time we saw it was just before we went to Malachor."Lisa commented.
"And look, Loth-wolves."Ezra responded.
Checking a holographic copy of the stone Ezra was given, Sabine notices the hands were similar to the ones in the painting.
"The stone the wolves gave me..."Ezra started.
"Yeah."Sabine replied. "I thought I might need to refer to it."
"Whoa, look guys."Lisa stated. "The hands, they're the same on the figures as the ones here on the stone."
"And that means something?"Ezra questioned.
"Ezra it's art, everything has a meaning."Sabine complemented. "I think this is it."
"What do you mean?"Zack asked.
"The painting on the temple is like a star map, but none that I'm familiar with."Sabine explained. "Those lines are like paths and the rings are planets, or, or doorways."
"Okay, but which one leads into the Temple?"Ezra said.
"We're about to find out."Sabine stated and took out the holographic copy of the stone. "The hands represent different configurations. Right now it looks like the painting is lined up with the central figure. I think we want this one, where the lines are together."
Lisa looked at Ezra and Zack.
"Then all we have to do is open the temple."Lisa responded in realisation.
"It is worth a shot."Zack commented.
"Kanan and I always opened it together."Ezra admitted. "It takes a Master and an apprentice, he said."
Sabine, Ezra, Lisa and Zack suddenly heard instinct stormtrooper chatter coming their way.
"Well, you three gonna have to think of something and fast."Sabine warned. "Hide!"
Ezra, Lisa and Zack went to hide underneath the rocks below the stone wall as Sabine was being approached by two stormtroopers.
"LS-515, why aren't you on patrol?"the first stormtrooper questioned.
"I thought I saw something moving over here, but um, it was just the shadows."Sabine responded.
"That's a restricted area."the stormtrooper reminded.
"I was just following protocol, sir, code 6-1-1-0."Sabine stated.
"That's military code."the stormtrooper said. "This operation is classified under directive AT-1-4."
"My mistake."Sabine apologised.
"You should have been informed about the new directive."the stormtrooper complemented.
"This is all very irregular."the stormtrooper retorted. "We're gonna have to call it in."
"If you do that, I'll be late for my assignment."Sabine reminded.
"Like you said, we're just following protocol."the stormtrooper said and spoke in his comlink. "515, affirmative. Copy that, over."
"I don't have time for this."Sabine scoffed.
"Operations says you and LS-412 deviated from your patrol route and never finished the perimeter sweep."the stormtrooper reported.
"Let's go over to operations and straighten this out."Sabine requested.
"Great, now we're both gonna have to file a report."the second stormtrooper scowled.
Ezra, Lisa and Zack carefully stood up as Sabine walked away with the two stormtroopers.
"We have to help her."Zack stated with a frown.
"Sabine will be okay, Zack."Lisa assured. "I'm sure she'll figure something out."
Ezra looked at the stone wall and touched the Daughter's hand.
"The stone...Listen to the stone and it's story."Ezra said quietly and closed his eyes. "Kanan said to listen."
"We are the ones who guard the power."the Daughter's voice said. "We are the middle, the beginning and the end."
Zack and Lisa looked at Ezra.
"Ezra?"Lisa asked in concern.
Suddenly the painting lights up causing Zack, Lisa and Ezra to become stunned.
The Daughter's head turned and the Father pointed his left hand at the Son's fist causing Ezra, Lisa and Zack to hear voices as the loth-wolf paintings come to life and start howling.
The loth-wolves walk across the wall causing the three jedi to follow them.
At the top of the Dig Site...
Hera watched Sabine through the macrobinoculars while Gwen checked on her twin brother and friends.
"Sabine is going with the troopers."Hera stated.
"Have they found her out?"Zeb questioned.
"I don't think so."Hera replied.
"What about Ezra, Lisa and Zack?"Zeb asked.
"I think they just went into the shadows."Gwen said in awe.
"What?"Zeb asked.
"Gwen is right."Hera agreed. "I think the paintings moved."
"All right, hand those over."Zeb stated and took the macrobinoculars. "You've been staring through them too long."
Ezra, Lisa and Zack followed the loth-wolves inside the cave and find the wolves are forming a circle on the rock.
The three jedi removed their scout trooper helmets.
"This is it."Ezra remarked.
"The Gateway."Lisa whispered.
Zack's eyes widen in disbelief.
Minister Hydan was inspecting an artifact brought by a Rodian miner when a disguised Sabine arrives flanked by two stormtroopers.
"Uh, what have we here?"Minister Hydan asked.
"Minister, we're bringing this trooper in for processing."A stormtrooper reported. "There seems to be a discrepancy."
"Indeed."Minister Hydan responded.
Minister Hydan lifted the face plate of Sabine's helmet.
"Who are you and where are her friends?"Minister Hydan questioned.
Sabine didn't respond.
"Restrain her! Lock down the perimeter!"Minister Hydan ordered. "Order all units to report in, we have an imposters loose on site!"
Klaxons began ringing in the dig site.
"Gotta move!"Hera warned.
Hera, Zeb, Gwen and Chopper retreat while Ezra, Lisa and Zack finds that the Gateway leads to a portal.
"Intruders in sector three grid two!"A stormtrooper called out.
"There they are!"A death trooper warned.
Suddenly light shun on the three jedi as several stormtroopers and death troopers close in on them in Sector 352.
Minister Hydan arrived with Sabine in tow.
"The gateway!"Minister Hydan said in surprise.
"Go!"Sabine shouted.
"Stop them!"Minister Hydan demanded.
Ezra, Lisa and Zack rushed forward and jumped into the portal.
The stormtroopers tried to follow but the portal seal as Sabine becomes shocked knowing that her three friends were now trapped inside.
