Chapter 48: A World Between Worlds
"Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is."
"What is this place?"
"A conduit through which the entire Force of the universe flows."
"Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. you find out how little you actually know."
"What must I do, Master?"
"Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose."
"What you need, you already have. Unfortunately, you seem to be letting it all go."
"I won't let him lose his way, not like I did."
Ezra, Lisa and Zack came through the portal of the Force wielders and landed on the floor.
Lisa checked on her companions to check if they were alright.
"Are you guys, okay?"Lisa asked.
"Yeah, Lisa."Ezra replied. "I'm fine."
"Ow."Zack groaned as he rubbed his head. "I have a headache, but it will eventually go away."
"The Force is what gives a Jedi his power."A male voice said. "It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together."
The three young jedi stood and became stunned where they were.
There were in the World Between Worlds, a mystical dimension of the Force that connects all of space and time.
Here the voices continue to echo around them, flashbacks of past events and events yet to come.
Back at the Imperial Command Center...
Minister Hydan had Sabine brought in for questioning.
A Death Trooper brought Minister Hydan a pad that had information about Sabine.
"Ah, of course. Sabine Wren."Minister Hydan commented. "It's no wonder you took such an interest in the paintings from the temple. The Grand Admiral has spoken highly of your talents. You know he's acquired a small collection of your work?"
Sabine scoffed. "I'm flattered."
"I would never consider myself an artist, but more a critic, perhaps."Minister Hydan responded.
"That explains a lot."Sabine replied.
"I will admit that you and your friends swiftly solved something that I could not."Minister Hydan stated. "Now, tell me, how did you open the portal?"
"I'm smarter than you."Sabine said sarcastically.
Minister Hydan let out a small chuckle.
"I have informed the Emperor that your friends entered the temple. He was rather impressed with young Bridger."Ministet Hydan admitted. "It must be so difficult for him now without his master. Yes. Kanan Jarrus, or Caleb Dume. Whichever. Such a pity he chose the path he did and fell to such a meaningless end."
"You think you're powerful, but you're just a pawn."Sabine retorted with a frown.
"Oh, well, it's true."Minister Hydan agreed. "My power is but a reflection of the might of my Emperor."
"And yet, for all his might, he couldn't open the door, but Ezra could."Sabine added.
"Your friends are not safe beyond the veil."Minister Hyan responded as he stood up. "The door is open. The Emperor will find him and your other companions. It's only a matter of time now. But there is hope. You have an opportunity to help them, if you help me."
Minister Hydan pressed a button in the pad causing the image screens of the Mortis Wielders and the other parts of the Lothal Temple to appear.
"As an artist, I would think that you would relish the opportunity to study the temple."Minister Hydan explained. "Do you even realize what it is?"
Sabine looked at the circled parts of the portal causing her to realise something.
"That portal, it's not just a way into the temple."Sabine said quietly. "It's a-"
"Pathway between all time and space."Minister Hydan finished. "He who controls it controls the universe."
Meanwhile...
Hera, Zeb, Gwen and Chopper continue to monitor the Imperial excavation site.
"Well?"Zeb asked.
"They took Sabine into one of the buildings on the far side of the site."Hera replied.
"Get down!"Zeb ordered.
Hera, Zeb, Gwen and Chopper ducked down to avoid being spotted by a gunship's search beam.
"What about Ezra, Lisa and my brother?"Gwen asked with a hint of worry. "Did they get inside the temple?"
"Honestly, Gwen, I don't know where they are and I doubt they do either."Hera answered.
In the World between Worlds...
Ezra, Zack and Lisa were walking across the bridge as they heard voices in the background.
"Hello!"Ezra called out. "Master Yoda? Obi-Wan? Where are you?"
There was no respond, but only the voices coming from the nearby portals.
"Do you think we'll find them here?"Zack questioned.
"I don't know, Zack."Ezra answered. "But I hope one of them are here."
Lisa followed behind the two boys as she looked at her surroundings.
"Every second I was thinking of you."A male voice said. "Protecting the endless, nameless Outer Rim settlements became a torture...the battles were easy, the longing became unbearable...I've never been so happy as I am at this moment."
Lisa looks at the portal where the voice was coming from causing her to walk up to it.
The portal activated and Lisa saw two figures talking to each other in a balcony in the middle of the night.
One was a man in jedi clothing while the other was a beautiful young woman.
As Lisa stared at the figures, she suddenly realised who were the people in the portal.
Anakin Skywalker and Padme Naberrie.
Her birth parents.
Lisa notice Padme was pregnant, knowing this was their parents conversation before she was born.
"Ani, I want to have our baby back home on Naboo."Padme said happily as she gently brushed her hair. "We can go to the lake country where no one will know...where we can be safe. I can go early and fix up the baby's room. I know the perfect spot. Right by the gardens."
"You are so...beautiful."Anakin admitted.
"It's only because I'm so in love."Padme replied with a smile.
Anakin chuckled and shook his head.
"No, it's because I'm so in love with you."Anakin remarked.
"So love has blinded you?"Padme teased.
Anakin walked up to Padme.
"That's not exactly what I meant."Anakin replied.
"But it's probably true."Padme giggled.
The two adults closed their eyes and kissed as Lisa watched them with a sad smile.
Lisa slowly reached out her hand to touch the portal, but suddenly hesitated.
Why was she hesitating?
This was her chance to meet her parents.
It was also her chance to warn them about Vader and the Emperor so that they-
No.
She couldn't.
What if something goes wrong and she ends up disappearing from existence?
Lisa slowly backed away as the portal deactivated causing her to see her own reflection.
"I can't just go in or bring them out."Lisa thought in shame. "They are having their moment. But..."
"Lisa!"Ezra's voice called out. "Where are you?"
"I'm coming!"Lisa replied.
Lisa rushed to where Ezra and Zack.
"Where did you go?"Ezra asked. "We thought you were gone."
"Sorry."Lisa apologised. "I was just lost in my thoughts."
"Yeah, but you should stay close."Zack suggested. "This place could be dangerous."
"Right."Lisa said simply.
The three young jedi heard owl hooting and see a convor hovering over a doorway.
"Hey."Ezra replied. "We've seen you before. Whenever Ahsoka was around, you were always close by."
"How did you get here?"Lisa asked. "There is no one but us here."
The owl hooted and hopped a little bit.
"Can you help us?"Zack questioned. "We were sent here, but neither of us don't know why."
The convor gestured the trio to look at the portal, which began shimmering in a red colour.
Ezra, Lisa and Zack glanced at each other before looking into the portal.
There was a sound of a lightsaber activating and mechanical breathing heard in the portal as the three jedi became shocked what they were seeing.
It was Ahsoka fighting Darth Vader so that Ezra, Lisa and Kanan could escape during their mission to Malachor.
"Ahsoka!"
"No."Ezra denied. "It can't be."
"Oh my gosh..."Lisa whispered.
Ahsoka sent young Ezra back before using her lightsabers to block Vader's blade from behind.
"No!"Young Ezra yelled out. "No!"
The doors of the temple closed as Ahsoka continued her duel with Vader.
Lisa and Zack watched with disturbed looks as Ahsoka helplessly duelled against the Sith Lord.
The convor started squawking at Ezra.
"What?"Ezra asked. "What can I do?"
Ahsoka used her lightsabers to duel against Vader before blocking the red blade from striking her down.
Zack's eyes widen a bit when he notice a part of Vader's mask was broken which showed his deadly sith yellow eye.
Suddenly the explosion in the temple started to spark violently causing Ahsoka to sent Vader back and plunge her lightsabers to break the ground where Vader stood.
Darth Vader held up his red lightsaber to kill Ahsoka, alarming Ezra and Lisa.
"Ahsoka!"Ezra and Lisa shouted in unison.
Ezra and Lisa brought their hands to bring Ahsoka out and Vader collapsed into the hole.
Zack quickly grabbed Ezra and Lisa as they brought Ahsoka out causing all of them to hit the floor as the portal deactivated.
In the Imperial Command Center...
"I discovered these images while going through the Jedi Temple archive on Coruscant."Minister Hydan stated.
"Still not interested."Sabine replied.
"I doubt that."Minister Hydan responded and looked at the image of the Mortis Force Wielders. "Now, these three figures appear throughout the Jedi's recorded history."
"Mmm-hmm, they're archetypes."Sabine answered.
"Yes, precisely."Minister Hydan agreed. "They're sometimes referred to as the Father, Son and Daughter. Now, do you notice anything about their depiction on the Lothal temple?"
"I-I don't know."Sabine lied. "They look the same to me."
"I am no fool, Lady Wren, so do not mistake my pleasant demeanor for weakness."Minister Hydan warned. "The painting has changed."
"You noticed that, huh?"Sabine questioned.
"Yes."Minister Hydan replied. "The Loth-wolves have moved. In fact, they now form the portal. I also find it interesting that the position of the Daughter's head and the hand of the Father has changed. Do you care to share what their significance is?"
A pair of death troopers enter the room causing Sabine to stand up and go next to Minister Hydan.
"The-The hands are a language."Sabine responded.
"I could find no similarity between it and any known language."Minister Hydan stated. "How is it that you can read it?"
"Remember? I'm smarter than you."Sabine reminded.
"Lady Wren, I had hoped we could have a civil conversation about art, but I see the Mandalorian in you only understands one form of discourse."Minister Hydan said grimly.
At Hydan's signal, one of the death troopers strikes Sabine in the head with his blaster rifle.
"Now, where were we?"Minister Hydan mocked.
Sabine glared at the minister in silence.
In the World between Worlds...
The convor hoots as Ezra, Lisa and Zack woke up.
The three jedi turned around and saw Ahsoka waking up.
Ahsoka held her lightsabers close to her and a sad expression appeared on her face as she now knew the face behind the haunting mask of Darth Vader was her own former master.
"Ahsoka?"Ezra asked.
Ahsoka's eyes widen before turning around seeing Ezra and Lisa behind her.
"Ezra?"Ahsoka said in surprise. "Lisa?"
Ezra and Lisa smiled at Ahsoka as they stood up.
"You two look different."Ahsoka commented and looked around. "Wait, what happened? Where am I?"
"You were fighting Vader."Ezra admitted. "We saw you in there. So we grabbed you and we pulled you out of there."
"He was going to kill you."Lisa stated.
Ahsoka looked down.
"Anakin."Ahsoka whispered quietly.
Zack walked up to Ahsoka.
"Hello, Ahsoka."Zack greeted as he walked forward. "My name is Zack. It's nice to meet you. I heard a lot about you."
Zack and Ahsoka shook hands.
"It's nice to meet you too, Zack."Ahsoka responded. "Your Nadia's son, aren't you?"
"I am."Zack agreed and raised his eyebrow. "How do you know?"
"I knew your mum a long time ago."Ahsoka replied with a small smile.
The convor hooted causing Ahsoka to look at her.
"Morai? You're here."Ahsoka remarked.
"Morai?"Lisa asked.
The convor flew forward and landed on Ahsoka's arm.
"She's an old friend."Ahsoka replied. "I owe her my life and now I owe you three that as well. How did you three get here? And where's Kanan? "
Sad expressions grew on Ezra, Lisa and Zack's faces.
"You've missed a lot."Ezra answered.
Hera, Zeb, Gwen and Chopper were infiltrating the Imperial camp.
"Okay, Hera, what're you thinking?"Zeb questioned.
"These are mobile command centers, right?"Hera asked.
"Yeah, they are."Gwen replied. "Why do you ask?"
A smug smile appeared on Hera's face causing Zeb and Gwen to understand what she was thinking.
"I like where this is going."Zeb chuckled and looked at Chopper. "Chop, you keep an eye out for Ezra, Lisa and Zack."
Chopper beeped at Zeb before strolling away.
"Okay."Hera said. "Let's move."
Hera, Zeb and Gwen carefully headed to the command center.
In the World between Worlds...
Ahsoka walked forward with Ezra, Lisa and Zack behind her.
"This place is ancient."Ahsoka stated. "Like a world between worlds."
"Yeah."Ezra agreed. "It feels like that dream where I met Dume."
"The creature named Dume, it appeared after Kanan died?"Ahsoka asked. "That has to be more than a coincidence."
"I know."Ezra said. "Caleb Dume? A wolf named Dume? What does it mean?"
"Perhaps Kanan's will is still at work through the wolf."Ahsoka suggested.
"You mean the wolf could be Kanan?"Lisa asked in surprise.
"It could be possible, I guess."Zack complemented.
"How could that be?"Ezra questioned.
Ahsoka took a few steps forward to look at the wolf image in the sky.
"Well, Kanan is part of the cosmic Force now."Ahsoka stated. "There are ways those who have passed on may still guide or influence the living. It's not impossible."
"But if it was Kanan who sent us here, then..."Ezra started.
A realisation came to Ezra.
"What is it?"Ahsoka asked.
"I thought we were sent here to stop the Empire, but then we found you."Ezra remarked. "Don't you see?"
"You think that Kanan sent you here to help me?"Ahsoka asked.
"Not just you!"Ezra responded. "I-I can do it! I can save Kanan just like I saved you!"
"What?"Zack scoffed.
"Ezra, wait!"Ahsoka protested.
"Hold on!"Lisa demanded.
"This way!"Ezra insisted. "One of these portals must lead to Kanan!"
Ezra ran in the area as the others followed after him.
"Ezra, think about what you're doing."Ahsoka instructed.
"I know what I'm doing!"Ezra assured. "Here, in this place, I can change things. I can stop Kanan from dying."
"You don't know that, Bridger!"Zack reminded. "What if something goes wrong?"
"You might end wiping you and the others from existence!"Lisa warned.
"It won't happen, Lisa."Ezra replied. "If we can change Ahsoka's fate, I can change his."
Ezra approached the portal and sees Kanan holding back the explosive wave.
Lisa paled. "Is that how..."
"Yeah."Zack responded sadly.
"I can reach him."Ezra responded.
"Ezra, Kanan gave his life so that you could live."Ahsoka admitted calmly. "If he is taken out of this moment, you all die."
"You don't understand what you're asking me to do!"Ezra argued.
"Yes, I do."Ahsoka replied. "You can't save your master...and I can't save mine. I'm asking you to let go."
Ezra fell silent as he watched Kanan held back the explosion using both of his hands and reached his hand out.
But then Ezra stopped and watched his master's final moments.
"KANAN!"Hera's voice cried out.
Then the portal powered off.
"I'm sorry, Ezra, but you must see."Ahsoka responded. "Kanan found the moment when he was needed most and he did what he had to do, for everyone."
"That's the lesson. I didn't see it, but now..."Ezra started sadly and sighed. "Sometimes I wish my life were different. I wish I could see my mom and dad. Why can't things be like they were?"
Zack and Lisa looked at each other in silence.
Suddenly rumbling was heard in the distance which alarmed the group.
"We can't stay here."Ahsoka warned and looked at Ezra. "You opened the door to this world. Do you know how to close it?"
"Sabine will know."Ezra answered. "We can do it together."
"The others will be so happy to see you."Lisa remarked.
"I can't go with you three."Ahsoka stated.
"Perhaps I can."A dark voice said.
Zack froze and his eyes widen as Lisa paled in fear.
The group see the Emperor looking at them through the portal where they had seen Kanan's last stand much to their shock.
Ahsoka went in front of Ezra, Lisa and Zack as she glared at Darth Sidious.
"Ezra Bridger and Ahsoka Tano...mine at last!"the Emperor replied and cackled evilly.
The Emperor has found a way to reach the World Between Worlds through Sith sorcery!
At the Imperial Camp...
Hera was activating one of the thrusters beneath Minister Hyden's command center.
Gwen slowly peeked and saw stormtroopers standing not far from where they stood.
"There are stormtroopers heading our way."Gwen retorted as she got ready to take out her lightsaber.
Zeb looked at Hera.
"Come on."Zeb reminded. "Hurry."
"Almost got it."Hera assured. "Get ready to send Sabine a signal."
"I'll tap it out right before blastoff."Zeb stated.
Zeb headed to the center as Gwen checked on the stormtroopers.
Inside the Imperial Command Center...
Minister Hydan observed that the Father was clearly showing the way to the portal and that the wolves are portal guardians.
"The Father is clearly showing the way to the portal."Minister Hydan replied. "The wolves are the portal guardians."
"Okay."Sabine said and pointed at owl that stood in the Daughter's shoulder. "What about the owl?"
"A servant of the Daughter or possibly the Daughter herself when acting as a spirit guide."Minister Hydan explained.
"Hmm...so if the Daughter opens the gateway-"Sabine started.
"The Son would close it."Minister Hydan finished.
"Huh."Sabine responded quietly. "There's something I didn't know."
"There you, see?"Minister Hydan asked. "We can help each other."
A stormtrooper came inside the center.
"Minister, something's happening to the portal."A stormtrooper reported.
Zeb warned Sabine by coded knocking.
"A-ha! I know that language too."Sabine sneered. "Sorry about the mess."
Then Hera activated the command center's thrusters.
The command center began tilting upwards as one of the thrusters lifts off.
Sabine, Hydan and the troopers dodge falling objects as the structure tilted on it's back.
Sabine knocked out a death trooper while Zeb punched a stormtrooper.
Hera helped Sabine up.
"Are you okay?"Hera asked.
"Yeah."Sabine answered. "What about Ezra, Lisa and Zack?"
"They're coming!"Gwen assured as she held her lightsaber. "We need to go!"
Hera, Zeb, Gwen and Sabine flee before the command center toppled on several crates in the landing pad.
On the Other Side of the Portal...
Palpatine sends a flow of blue flames after Ahsoka and the three jedi.
"I can't hold it!"Ahsoka shouted.
Ezra, Zack and Lisa all used the Force to help Ahsoka dissipate the blue flames.
Ahsoka went on her knees as her companions checked on her.
"Are you all right?"Zack asked.
The Emperor let out a evil cackle.
"Run!"Ahsoka shouted.
Ahsoka, Lisa, Ezra and Zack ran as the Emperor unleashed a second volley of blue flames after them.
Suddenly Ezra was caught in a tendril and the Emperor gloated.
"Guys!"Ezra yelled out.
Ahsoka, Lisa and Zack stopped running and saw Ezra being dragged by the blue flames.
"Show me the way, Ezra."Darth Sidious begged. "Help me."
"Leave him alone!"Lisa shouted angrily.
Lisa ran forward and used her lightsabers to slash off the blue flames that held Ezra causing the Emperor to howl in rage.
Ahsoka, Ezra, Lisa and Zack continued running from the Emperor's flames.
Ezra, Lisa and Zack continued running to the portal they came through while Ahsoka headed for the portal that was in another direction.
"Keep going!"Ahsoka protested. "You all can make it!"
"When you get back, come and find us!"Zack called out.
"I will!"Ahsoka assured. "I promise!"
Ahsoka headed into the portal she came from with Morai before the blue flames can grab her.
Ahsoka and Morai escaped back to their portal on Malachor.
"May the Force be with you all, Ezra Bridger, Zack Aomori and Lisa Skywalker."Ahsoka admitted.
Ahsoka slowly began walking into the depths of the Sith Temple.
Ezra, Lisa and Zack ran toward the Lothal Gateway and narrowly escaped the Emperor's clutches.
"NOOOOO!"Darth Sidious screamed in rage.
Hera, Sabine, Gwen and Zeb rushed forward as Ezra, Lisa and Zack coming out of the portal.
"Guys! Get up!"Sabine shouted. "We're leaving!"
"No! We have to seal the portal!"Ezra reminded. "Come on!"
Hera, Sabine and Zeb blasted at the troopers while Lisa and Zack activated their lightsabers to help Gwen reflect the lasers from the stormtroopers.
The rebels shoot several Imperial troopers as they run.
Chopper laughed as he arrived with the Mining Guild excavation driller and forced the stormtroopers to retreat.
"Chopper's got'em."Zeb chuckled in amusement. "Let's move!"
"Sabine, which one do I activate?"Ezra asked.
"The Son!"Sabine instructed. "That one!"
"Do it, Ezra!"Lisa encouraged.
Ezra began activating the Son.
"Stop him!"Minister Hydan demanded.
Minister Hydan ordered the Imperials to stop the rebels but they were blocked by Chopper's driller.
Zeb helped Ezra up to reach the Son's hand.
Ezra closed his eyes as he touched the Son, whose eyes glow on the mural.
"The future, by it's nature, can be changed."the Son whispered.
Hearing the Son's words about the possibility to change the future, Ezra fell back onto Zeb, who catches him.
The Father moved his hand and the Son joined his hands and sinked with the Daughter.
The rebels retreat aboard Chopper's driller with Zeb carrying the unconscious Ezra.
Zack and Gwen went into the driller as Lisa helped Zeb bring Ezra in.
"Chopper, get us out of here!"Hera ordered.
Minister Hydan rushed to the collapsing temple.
"The temple, it's collapsing! What have they done?"Minister Hydan shouted. "The knowledge! Everything will be lost! No!"
The sinking Temple emits a bright light and the wolves flee to the mural.
Then Minister Hydan fell into the growing chasm.
The driller shook wildly as it tried to avoid the collapsing rocks.
"It's gonna be close!"Gwen warned nervously.
"We'll make it!"Zack stated.
The rebels fled inside the driller as the light from the collapsing temple grew bigger.
Inside the Hijacked Drill...
"The Force will be with you, always."Kanan's voice said quietly.
Ezra slowly woke up and notice his friends looking at him.
"Your awake."Lisa chuckled lightly. "That's a relief."
"If this is what you and Kanan used to do on your Jedi missions, you can keep it."Zeb commented.
Ezra notice Hera wasn't in the drill.
"Where's Hera?"Ezra asked.
"She's outside."Sabine responded. "Ezra, you gotta see."
Ezra went out of the drill and went beside Hera as the wind slowly howled.
"Where are we?"Ezra questioned.
"The temple."Hera answered sadly.
This caused Ezra to become stunned.
"What? Where?"Ezra demanded in shock. "I mean, how?"
"You tell me."Hera suggested.
"Kanan and I stood here, when we first came to the temple."Ezra admitted.
"He's gone now, isn't he?"Hera asked in heartbreak. "I mean, really gone."
Hera fell silent.
"Yes."Ezra responded. "I know what we have to do now. In a way, Kanan showed me. One last lesson."
Hera held Ezra's shoulder and quietly walked away.
Ezra see a white loth-wolf in the distance.
The white loth-wolf looked at him before walking into the fog.
"Goodbye Kanan."Ezra replied quietly.
Then Ezra walked away and returned to the driller.
