Chapter 49: A Fool's Hope
At the Lothal Cliff Dwelling...
Lisa and Zack spoke to Gwen and Artoo about the incident during their visit to the World Between Worlds with Ezra.
"So you guys and Ezra saved Ahsoka from Vader right before separating and escaping through the portals through which you all have come?"Gwen asked.
"Yeah."Zack agreed with a nod. "The good news is Ahsoka promised to come and find us soon."
"That's awesome news."Gwen remarked.
Artoo let out a happy beep and spun around a little bit.
"I am just glad the Emperor won't be able to breach the barriers between life and death as a final stepping stone to controlling the Force within the entire universe."Lisa commented and folded her arms. "This would've hugely damage us and the chance of the rebellion to survive."
"Or worse."Zack added. "Neither of us would've never been born."
"Well, I'm just you guys are all back and out of harm's way."Gwen commented.
"You know what guys? When we were in the world between worlds...I actually saw my birth parents."Lisa admitted.
This caused Zack, Gwen and Artoo to become stunned.
"You met your parents, Lisa?"Zack questioned.
"Not exactly."Lisa answered with a weak smile. "But what I saw in one of portals was a moment when my mum was still expecting me and she was discussing with Anakin that they wanted to raise me somewhere safe in the lake country in Naboo. Mum said she would wake up every mornihg to fix my room."
A few tears began to appear in Lisa's eyes causing Zack and Gwen to hug her.
"Sorry, guys."Lisa apologised and dried her tears. "I just get a little emotional sometimes."
"It's fine, Lisa."Gwen assured. "You have at least us and our parents, remember?"
"And we'll make sure to be there for you when you need us the most."Zack assured.
"Thanks."Lisa complemented kindly. "That means a lot."
Lisa patted Artoo's head causing the droid to beep gently at her.
Then R2-KT showed up and beeped at her companions.
"We're coming, KT."Gwen answered.
R2-KT brought the group to the command center, which was where the others were.
"Ezra, I have General Syndulla."Vizago stated.
Ezra walked up to Hera's hologram which was shown by Chopper.
"Ezra, what's the emergency?"Hera asked.
"We need to act right now if we're gonna take Capital City from the Empire."Ezra admitted.
"Your plan is crazy enough as it is."Zeb complemented. "What's the rush?"
"I had a vision."Ezra answered. "The Emperor is sending Thrawn back to Lothal. It's now or never."
"Then it's never."General Ryder replied. "We won't stand a chance. We already tried and failed. Our best hope is to lay low, reorganise and rebuild."
"Ryder, you have to trust me."Ezra instructed.
"Ezra, we need an army to take the city."Ryder complemented. "Look around. I don't see an army."
"We don't need an army."Ezra commented. "We just need one person."
In the Dome...
An Imperial officer informed Governor Pryce that his forces have scanned the outer reaches but have found no sign of the rebels.
"Well?"Governor Pryce questioned as she slammed her fist on the desk.
"We've scanned the outer reaches and we found the remains of several small encampments but no signs of the rebels' current whereabouts."the imperial officer reported nervously.
"Thrawn will return soon, and if I do not have the rebels, I will be executed."Governor Pryce retorted. "But before that happens to me, do you know what I will do to you for failing?"
"I will commit more troops to the search."the imperial officer assured nervously.
Then a another officer bursted into the room to inform Pryce that she had received an incoming transmission on an old pre-Imperial frequency.
"Governor, you have received an incoming transmission on an old pre-Imperial frequency."the second imperial officer reported.
"Put it through."Governor Pryce ordered.
The imperial officer pressed a button on his pad causing a hologram of Ryder to appear in front of Governor Pryce.
"Hello, Arihnda."Ryder greeted.
"Ryder Azadi."Governor Pryce said. "This is a bold move."
"I do what I have to do to survive."Ryder answered.
"Barely."Governor Pryce commented. "That strategy didn't stop me from usurping you as governor."
"And yet here I am, alive, to offer you something you can't resist."Ryder replied.
"Oh, your head on a platter?"Governor Pryce asked.
"Not mine."Ryder responded. "The rebels...all of them."
"You're betraying them?"Governor Pryce said. "Why?"
"They can't win and I don't want to end up back in an Imperial prison...or worse."Ryder admitted.
"Ugh."Governor Pryce scoffed. "You want amnesty?"
"Yes."Ryder agreed. "In return, I give you Bridger, Syndulla and the rest of them."
"This is cowardly, even for you."Governor Pryce stated.
"Do we have a deal, Governor?"Ryder asked.
"Send me your coordinates."Govenror Pryce ordered.
Ryder smiled as a smirk grew on Governor Pryce's face.
At the Rebel Camp...
Ezra and Sabine sees a bunch of Loth-wolves howling in the distance.
"What is this connection you have with them?"Sabine asked. "I've never understood it."
"I can't explain it."Ezra replied. "Sometimes the connection is strong and sometimes I'm just on my own."
"Well, if your plan's going to work, let's hope whatever you feel is there when you need it."Sabine commented.
"Mmm...it has been so far."Ezra said.
The two rebels notice wolves were running away.
"Where are they going?"Sabine questioned.
Lisa, Zack and Gwen were checking a few weapons in the camp with Mart and Jai.
Suddenly they sensed sudden movement causing them to stop what they're doing.
"Do you hear that?"Zack questioned.
"That noise..."Lisa whispered nervously.
Ezra and Sabine started running to the other side.
"Zeb, they're coming!"Ezra shouted.
Zeb sees six Imperial patrol transports approaching the encampment.
"Argh, Karabast."Zeb grumbled angrily.
The gunships began strafing the camp and deploying several jumptroopers.
Lisa and Zack began using their lightsabers to deflect the lasers of the gunships while the other rebels began firing their blasters at the jumptroopers.
"I'll handle those flyers!"Sabine vowed.
Governor Pryce looked at the stormtroopers in her gunship.
"Make sure to take the Jedi boy alive."Governor Pryce ordered. "We don't want to disappoint our Emperor."
Zeb looked at Jai and Gwen.
"Man those cannons!"Zeb ordered.
Jai and Gwen began shooting at the gunships with the cannons, while Sabine flew her jetpack after the jumptroopers.
One of the patrol transports land and disgorged the Noghri tracker Rukh and several stormtroopers.
Sabine runs circles around the jumptroopers and takes out a patrol transport with a jet rocket causing the stricken gunship to crash.
"Chopper!"Ezra shouted. "Warn Hera that we're under attack!"
Chopper beeped and started signalling Hera.
Ezra, Lisa and Zack deflected laser blasts from the stormtroopers that were coming there way.
The three jedi leapt into the air and started cutting down the stormtroopers in the left side.
"Hopefully you hid Artoo and KT before this happened."Zack reminded with a frown.
"Oh, I did."Lisa assured with a small smirk and slashed down four stormtroopers. "And they're with who you at least expected."
Zack looked at Lisa for a moment before cutting a stormtrooper down.
Ezra quickly deflected Rukh's electrostaff bolts with his lightsaber.
Chopper gets pursued by a stormtrooper and jumped down a ledge.
The orange droid uses his mechanical arm to drag the stormtrooper down.
Sabine takes out another jumptrooper.
The Mandalorian girl then flew through two patrol transports and shoots at the stormtrooper gunners.
Ezra fights with Rukh, whose reflexes prove a match for the boy's Force powers.
Rukh falls over a roof and Ezra moves away to join Zack and Lisa.
However, Rukh managed to cling to the rock face and scurries up the cliff.
Gwen and the other rebels had taken a defensive position on top of the former Mining Guild ore crawler.
Jai and Gwen quickly backed away when their cannons got blasted by the gunships.
Gwen activated her lightsaber to deflect the lasers coming from the strormtroopers in the gunships.
Zeb grabbed a mortar and charged at a landing gunship, taking out several stormtroopers.
The Lasat shoots at the gunship, causing it to fall off the top of the crawler.
"Yeah!"Zeb roared. "You'd better get off!"
Suddenly two more gunships landed on top of the crawler and outflank the rebels.
With his mortar out of juice, Zeb hurled it at the stormtroopers.
Ezra, Lisa and Zack came back where the others were and slashed the approaching stormtroopers.
"Hera, where are you?"Ezra asked.
"She'll come, Ezra!"Lisa assured.
"Either way, she better come soon!"Zack snapped and angrily used the force with his free hand to send five stormtroopers fall to the ground below. "This charade is getting in my nerves!"
The rebels soon find themselves surrounded by stormtroopers and began to suffer casualties.
"There's too many!"Zeb retorted.
"Damn these bucket heads!"Gwen scowled with a glare.
Vizago glanced at Ezra.
"I'm beginning to regret the day I met you, Ezra Bridger!"Vizago warned.
"Day's not over yet, Vizago!"Ezra reminded.
Lisa, Ezra, Zack and Gwen stood closely next to their companions as they fought against the stormtroopers.
Rukh roamed through the camp with Ryder taking care not to shoot him to perpetuate the ruse that he is a traitor.
"Incoming!"Zeb yelled out.
The patrol transport fired a volley of missiles that destroy the middle of the crawler, causing the front and rear sections to collapse.
The rebels and Imperials abandon the stricken freighter with the latter on gunships.
Mart, Zack and Gwen leapt to safety while several stormtroopers fall into the flaming wreckage.
"Take Vizago!"Ezra ordered. "We'll jump!"
Sabine took off holding Vizago as Ezra, Lisa and Zeb jumped from the stricken crawler onto a platform.
The three rebels climbed onto the platform only to discover that stormtroopers have already captured and disarmed the others.
"Drop your weapons."Rukh ordered.
Ezra, Lisa and Zeb dropped their weapons and stood up as Rukh contacted Governor Pryce in his comlink.
"The rebel base is secure, Governor."Rukh reported. "And I have the boy."
Governor Pryce arrived with the three remaining gunships.
"Ezra Bridger, Sabine Wren, Garazeb Orrelios, Lisa Costil and Ryder Azadi."Governor Pryce said and looked at Ryder. "Stand up, my old friend. I thank you for helping me to bring peace to Lothal."
Ryder stood up as Ezra, Lisa, Zeb, Sabine, Zack and Gwen glared at him.
"Ryder, you betrayed us?"Sabine retorted.
"It's like I said."Ryder reminded. "We were never going to win without an army."
"Traitor."Zack murmured coldly.
"A wise choice."Governor Pryce admitted.
"I knew you'd think so."Ezra responded with a frown. "We wouldn't have been able to fool Thrawn, but you?"
"Well, looks like we both took a gamble today."Governor Pryce answered evilly. "But I won."
Ezra's wrist comm started buzzing causing him and Lisa to smirk at each other.
"I guess not all imperials are intelligent after all."Lisa complemented smugly.
Zack and Gwen at each other in confusion as Ezra looked at Ryder.
"Do you want to tell her or should I?"Ezra asked in amusement.
"Oh, I've been waiting years for this."Ryder answered. "Getting you to come all the way out here was part of our plan."
"For all the good it did you, your little rebellion ends right now."Governor Pryce retorted. "You are my prisoners."
"Get down!"Lisa demanded.
The rebels dropped themselves down as Hera strafed the stormtroopers.
Hondo maned the front turret while Ketsu serves as co-pilot.
Melch used the rear turret to shoot down another patrol transport and cheered.
Then Rex, Gregor, Wolffe, Boost, Warthog and Kallus charged down the gangplank to join the fight.
Ezra, Lisa, Zeb, Sabine, Zack, Gwen and the other rebels picked up their blasters to fire at the stormtroopers as well.
"Chopper, jam their transmissions!"Sabine ordered.
Chopper jammed the Imperials' transmissions, which disoriented the stormtroopers.
The two remaining gunships began pursuing the Ghost.
"We're still outnumbered!"Vizago protested.
"Not for long."Ezra replied. "Fall back to the cave!"
The rebels started fleeing into the cave causing Governor Pryce to notice this.
"They're trapped."Governor Pryce said. "Bring me Bridger. Eliminate the rest."
Rukh lead the stormtroopers into the cave, where they find Ezra shrouded in darkness.
"Where is your army now, Jedi?"Rukh questioned.
Ezra responds by igniting his lightsaber, just as three Loth-wolves, including the white Loth-wolf, emerge from behind.
Rukh turned to retreat as the Loth-wolves attack the Imperials.
The white Loth-wolf grabbed Rukh and dragged him outside.
Rukh fights back, but the creature fling him off a cliff.
The Loth-wolves drive away or maul the remaining stormtroopers.
Ezra, Lisa and the rebels emerged to see the wolves driving the Imperials away and the Ghost pursing the gunships.
Inside the Ghost...
"I got him! I got him!"Hondo called out. "Melch, Melch! Turn around. Be productive!"
Melch squealed and shoots down one of the gunships.
"Yes, yes, you perform well when I pull your strings."Hondo said simply.
"Hang on!"Hera warned.
Hera rammed the Ghost into the remaining gunship, causing it to crash.
The rebels watched as the Loth-wolves rip through the remaining stormtroopers.
"Hey, Wolffe, can you believe it?"Gregor asked.
"What?"Wolffe asked.
"The wolves! You got your wolf pack back!"Gregor joked.
"Yeah, they fight just like the boys."Wolffe chuckled.
One of the wolves tosses a stormtrooper down a cliff.
"Just like 'em!"Gregor laughed.
"The others would've been proud to see this."Boost chuckled.
"You got that right, Boost."Warthog sneered.
The rebels continued firing at the stormtroopers to defeat them.
Then the remaining stormtroopers raise their hands and surrender as the Loth-wolves growled at them.
"I'd drop your weapons if I were you."Zeb insisted with a smirk.
The stromtroopers dropped their weapons on the floor.
Gwen smirked at Zack.
"Is this charade still bothering you now, big brother?"Gwen asked.
"Move on."Zack retorted simply.
Lisa let out a small chuckle.
A white Loth-wolf carried a frightened Pryce in it's jaws while walking behind Ezra.
"Don't let it eat me!"Governor Pryce begged. "Please!"
The white Loth-wolf dropped Pryce in front of Ryder, Rex and Kallus.
Ezra handed Ryder a bunch of cuffs.
"Why don't you do the honours, governor-to-governor?"Ezra asked.
"Ezra, it would be my pleasure."Ryder answered with a smile.
Governor Pryce placed her head down in defeat.
Afterwards...
Ezra, Lisa and the others meets up with Hera, Hondo, Melch and Ketsu.
Two Loth-wolves came forward before dropping Artoo and R2-KT from their mouths.
Lisa smiled at the Loth-wolves.
"Thanks for taking care of them."Lisa remarked.
The Loth-wolves let out soft growls as R2-KT gave a complaining beep at Lisa.
"Hey."Lisa retorted with her arms folded. "Be grateful they didn't use you as a chew toy."
Artoo beeped in disproval and shook his head as he headed next to Rex to greet him.
Hera looked at Ezra.
"You did it."Hera replied with a smile. "Somehow, against all the odds, you actually did it."
"I couldn't have without you."Ezra admitted. "All of you."
"So true, my young friend."Hondo agreed and put a hand on Ezra's shoulder. "You're welcome. So I, uh...I guess the fight is won and we can all get paid and go home now?"
"I wish it was over, but it's not."Ezra stated and looked at his companions. "Not until we chase the Empire from Lothal and show the galaxy that for all their power, they can be defeated."
