Accidents
(Summary: Ezra tries to help the crew in various tasks, but it ends up going a bit wrong)
After waking the entire crew up the night before with his stupid nightmare, Ezra was determined to make it up to them for disrupting their sleep. He had only been a part of this crew for a mere few hours, so he doubted they would properly trust him yet (especially when you considered how they had all met) and he knew next to nothing about any of them. Neither did they know anything about him.
A good crew built up foundations on friendship and trust and understanding. So far, Ezra had none of that with any of them. He had set his mind to the task of changing that.
He would prove his worth and they would learn to respect him and he would prove that he could help them and he was not just some useless child who liked to steal!
The fourteen-year-old decided he should go assist Kanan in whatever he was doing first. After all, they already sort of had a connection through the Force and Kanan was probably the main reason he had decided to join the Ghost crew. It would be a good idea to get to know the man who was going to train him in the ways of the Jedi a bit more and build some sort of mutual bond that could possibly help make training together a bit more pleasant and easier.
The boy found the older man in his room meditating... or maybe he was just asleep? Ezra was about to prod him to find out when Kanan spoke: "What is it, kid?"
Ezra jumped, but quickly covered up his surprise.
"What are you doing?"
"Why?"
"Can I help?"
"You want to help me meditate?" Kanan asked, opening one eye to glance at the newest Spectre, raising one eyebrow as he did so.
"Well, um, actually, I just-"
Kanan sighed. "Sit down, kid. I'll teach you how if you want."
Ezra obeyed eagerly. This was progress! Maybe they would actually bond through this and learn a bit more about each other. Kanan would see that he was more than just the thief he had first met.
Kanan once again raised an eyebrow when he saw how eagerly the boy complied. He couldn't remember any kid ever being that happy to meditate. Perhaps he was up to something. Or maybe he wanted something from Kanan.
"What now?" Ezra drew the man out of his thoughts and he turned to see the teen sat next to him in the same position as he was. He had his eyes closed, but now he opened them and fixed them on Kanan, awaiting the next step.
So, Kanan tried. He really did. He just wasn't used to having someone else with him while he meditated and he wasn't used to having to teach someone it, either. Especially, when that someone was a lively teenage boy who just didn't know how to sit still! Eventually, he couldn't cope anymore, couldn't focus with someone else around, couldn't deal with the constant talking even though he had told the boy that you were meant to be quiet while meditating. In the end, he just ended up asking Ezra if he wouldn't mind giving him some time to himself to focus. Ezra got the hint
The blue-haired, orange-clad, skinny teenage boy wandered around the Ghost, looking for someone else to help out.
He'd annoyed Kanan, he could tell, and he realised that he probably had talked just a bit too much. But now he had to find someone else to help out.
If I can't help out Kanan, I'll just have to help out someone else twice as much as before to make up for it.
That was when he came upon Sabine in the main living quarters of the ship. She was painting one of the seats and Ezra saw a perfect opportunity. He could help her paint!
"Um... hi, Sabine," he started, unsure of where to go from there.
"Hi, what's up?"
Well, at least that was a start.
"What are you doing?"
"Painting," she replied simply, still not looking at him. Her sole focus was on what she was doing.
"Oh, well, um, can I help, maybe?"
Sabine - just like Kanan - raised one eyebrow sceptically. She knew that Ezra liked her and this might just be his way of trying to get her attention. But then she shrugged mentally to herself. He wouldn't get her attention and he knew it. And she saw no harm in letting him help. She enjoyed teaching her painting techniques to others and Ezra seemed happy to listen (although, he probably would've been happy to listen if she was giving a Doomsday speech). Plus, this would give them a bit of time to get to know each other. They were a part of the same crew now, after all, and would be living together from now on.
"Sure," she said after a second's hesitation, smiling welcomely at him and waving him over to her side. She pretended not to notice the gleeful expression climbing over his young face.
Painting with Sabine hadn't gone very well, either. He hadn't meant to ruin her colours or brushes or use the explosive paint instead of the normal paint. It wasn't his fault, though! He had never painted before or used any sort of artistic supplies in his life! How was he supposed to know?
So, now he didn't know what to do. He still wanted to do things to help his crew mates out, but he seemed to be having a lot of accidents today. Maybe they wouldn't want him anymore. They'd realise they had made a mistake taking him on and ask him to leave! They will, it's only a matter of time!
He came upon Hera and Chopper in the cockpit. It looked like Hera was fixing some circuits inside the old C1 astromech. Now this was something he could help with! Fixing things was his specialty! And if he helped Hera to fix Chopper, he'd also be helpingthe grumpy droid, too. Two birds with one stone! Perfect!
"Hey, Hera!"
The Twi'lek woman looked up briefly and offered him a small smile.
"Hi, Ezra. I'm a bit busy right now, fixing some of Chopper's circuitry. You can stay and watch if you like, though. I hope you're not too tired from last night. Did you manage to get back to sleep at all?"
Ezra smiled a genuine smile at her. She was a natural mother, whether or not she realised it, always looking out for others, always caring. She was the second biggest reason Ezra had decided to join the Ghost crew.
"I'm good thanks. Slept just fine last night after I woke you all up. Sorry about that, by the way," he spoke softly, not wanting to disrupt Hera from her work.
"It's alright, Ezra, to have bad dreams, you know."
"Yeah, well, I... can I help with Chopper?"
This seemed to take the Twi'lek by surprise, but after a couple of seconds, she nodded and patted the seat next to her as a sign that he should sit down. He did so.
The motherly woman began to explain what she was working on and what she needed him to do. Ezra picked it up pretty quickly and soon they were working happily away.
Until!
Ezra placed one of the wires in the wrong way and ruined everything he and Hera had just managed to fix! Everything short-circuited and almost blew up Chopper! Needless to say, Hera wasn't pleased at all.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to! Hera, if there's anything I can do-"
"Ezra," she tried to gently interrupt.
"I know, I know. You won't be able to forgive me! I'll get my backpack and leave."
"Leave? Why would you leave?"
"Because..." Ezra took a deep breath to stop himself from breaking down. "Because none of you like me. I just cause trouble. You probably don't want me around, do you?"
"Ezra! No, don't think like that."
She got up and pulled him into a hug.
"We do want you. Why'd you think we let you join this crew and come aboard this ship?"
"I know, but-"
"It's not your fault, we all make mistakes from time to time. But we're here to help you through them when you do make those mistakes. That's what being a part of this crew and team means - that's what being part of a family means! And don't worry; we aren't getting rid of you."
Ezra hugged her tightly back. He didn't even notice when the others all walked into the cockpit. They'd been walking up there to discuss something that had come up when they had heard the discussion between Hera and Ezra. Now they joined in on the hug, too.
Ezra looked in surprise. "When did you guys get here?"
Kanan chuckled softly. "Been here a while. Just wanted to tell you guys about a weapons shipment coming in tomorrow with someone called Minister Tua."
