The rain tore against the island hut like a wild boar rooting for grubs. Sora awoke with a start as the roof nearly blew off
He was only 11. This was frightening. His heart caught in his stomach, and he swallowed bile in his throat. There came a horrid screechhng, like a tortured eagle. The little boy yelped and hid under the hammock he slept on, hugging his knees to his chest in terror.
From the next hammock came a rumbling, like a chainsaw. Riku tossed and turned in his hammock, pleasantly bliss to the thunder, lightning, and wind that was terrifying his best friend. To the older boy, this weather was pleasant, a call to death to lead him home. His aunt sometimes boomed like that too. His uncle made him make louder thuds until darkness claimed him...taking him from the pain of the Light to cradle him in its cold embrace. It soothed his wounds and healed his heart, and he'd rather keep his eyes closed than open them to more searing Light.
But Sora's Light...
Soft, warm...yet encompassing all the same. Sora's Light always chased the Darkness away...it crept into his searing wounds, both mental and physical, and melted them until the pain disappeared. It was never hot and scorching, it never stung his eyes nor made him grind his teeth. It was almost as soothing as the cold, crushing Darkness.
As another peal of thunder tore through the airwaves, a horror-filled shriek ripped out of Sora's throat. Riku neartly fell out of his hammock, and realized that the Darkness that he took comfort in was making its way like a black mist into Sora's being, choking out the soft Light and making the younger boy start to cry. The Darkness wasn't meant for him!
Riku reached out, willing the mist to descend upon his own self rather than pervert his best friend's innocent, bright and naïve being. He begged and pleaded it to give him comfort, sweet, cold, soothing comfort. The mist seemed to turn and crawl to his outstretched arms, gripping him with its chilling, whispering talons.
Riku smiled and sank into the fog, his hurts being lessened by the embrace...the embrace of the Darkness.
"I'm not afraid of the Darkness!"
