Rose stared at the large sunset colored chair. She's been trying to climb it for as long as she could remember. She had only ever been able to reach the orange seat, not the red top. She was determined to do though. The chair was all part of her new home, part of her new life.
"You're getting better at that, aren't you?"
Rose turned and looked at the man standing beside the chair. Daddy Snake was watching her today. Mummy had left them home alone.
"Snake," she said, raising her arms above her head. It was her way of asking to be picked up. She noticed Daddy Snake smiled when she said his name, she knew it wasn't Snake, but his name had a letter she couldn't say. Snake was close enough for him to understand. He picked her up holding her in his arms. She looked at the sleeves of his black shirt. He always wore black. It was his favorite color the same way hers was blue. She liked blue. It looked pretty with her red hair.
"You know, Rosie, I like your mummy a lot," Snake said. Rose nodded. She liked her mummy a lot too.
"Mummy like you too," Rose replied. "She talk about you all time."
"She does, does she?"
"Yes!" Rose replied, wiggling to be put down. Snake put her down on the carpeted floor. Rose crawled over to a pile of blocks on the floor. They were pretty colors and different shapes. There was also a box that came with them. It had lots of holes in it, but the holes were different shapes and some of the blocks didn't fit in the holes. She picked up a green one and looked at it.
"And what do you think of me, Rose?" Snake asked, sitting on the floor next to Rose. Rose looked over at him.
"You better daddy, Daddy Snake," she answered, trying to put the green block in a round hole. It didn't fit. It had corners. Rose pulled it back and looked at the holes again, this time finding one that also had corners. The block slid in easily this time.
"I am?"
"You no yell at Mummy and make her cry. And you smell better and Mummy likes you. She put on lipstick," Rose explained. Daddy Snake's face looked sad at this information. Rose didn't understand, wasn't he happy that he was better than her daddy? Daddy had been mean to Mummy, had yelled at her a lot, had even yelled at Rose.
Rose's stomach growled and she looked to the only adult in the house.
"You fish?" she asked.
"Do I have fish?"
"Yes, fish an ket'up?"
"You want fish strips and ketchup?"
Rose smiled. Daddy Snake understood her just fine. Even Mummy had trouble figuring out what she wanted sometimes.
"Yes!" she yelled, jumping to her feet, the tower of blocks she's been putting together fell over as the leg of her jeans hit it. She blinked at it for a moment before waving a hand over the blocks. They started hovering in the air, rebuilding what she'd knocked over.
"Rose, that's the first time I've seen you use magic."
"I do magic all time," Rose replied. "fish?"
"Yes, let's get some lunch," Daddy Snake said, taking more time to get up off the floor than Rose had. She waited for him before heading towards the kitchen.
"And you have to use the gween plate, and Mummy said I could have juice, 'member?" Rose asked. "It has to be in the pink cup because it doesn't taste right in the yellow one," she continued explaining. She knew Mummy hadn't said she could have juice, but she wanted juice and telling Daddy Snake she could didn't mean she couldn't have it?
"Right, one juice and two fish strips with ketchup coming up. Why don't you go wash your hands?"
Rose walked over to the sink, stepping on the little ladder with her name on top so she could reach the handles.
"Don't forget it has to be on the gween plate and the just goes in the pink cup," she stated.
"Rose, you have three pink cups. Which one did you want?
"Razzmatazz!" Rose yelled, having just learned the name of the color from her box of crayons.
She could hear Daddy Snake muttering, but when she got done washing her hands and drying them, her lunch was on the table with the correct colored dish and cup. She picked at her fish, dipping each little nibble in ketchup.
"Are you even eating the fish or just the ketchup?'
"Ketchup, but need fish to put it on," Rose answered, her mouth full.
"Rose, finish chewing your food before you speak, please."
Rose swallowed that bite and took another.
"Done!"
"Rose, you know the rule, you must eat three bites of your fish, and not just the ketchup."
"Fine," Rose grumbled. Normally Mummy ate lunch with her, but she'd gone back to her stupid job. Rose didn't want Mummy to back to her job. She wanted her to stay here. She broke off the tineiest bit of fish she could and put in her mouth.
"Twee!"
"That wasn't a bite. A bite fills your mouth. Would you like me to cut your fish into bite sized pieces?"
Rose thought about it. Tiny pieces were easier to hide so she didn't have to eat them. She nodded and Daddy Snake cut up her fish. She put one piece in her mouth and slipped another one on to the floor. Kitty would eat it later. She ended up eating two more pieces because Daddy Snake was watching her.
"Done!" she announced again, pretending half her fish wasn't on the floor under the table.
"And where do your dishes go?"
"Sink," Rose answered, sliding out of her chair, grabbing her plate and cup. She put the plate in in the sink and looked at the clock. She couldn't read it, but she knew after lunch was nap time. She didn't want to take a nap!
"More dwink?" she asked, holding out her cup. Maybe she could get some more juice?
"It's almost nap time, so you'll have water."
Rose wrinkled her nose.
"With ice?" she asked, both bargaining and trying to stall for time.
"With ice," Snake agreed, taking the cup. "Did you want to try and use the potty?"
"No," Rose stated. Using the potty was horrible! She found it confusing.
"Please, just try?" Daddy Snake asked. Rose looked up at him, he was smiling at her, a friendly smile. Maybe she'd try for him? He and Mummy were really into her using the potty thing. Mummy'd even brought it with them when she and Rose had moved here. They'd left the house they lived in with Daddy and moved in with Daddy Snake. Rose liked this place better. Daddy Snake offered her his hand and she curled her little fingers around it. He led her to the bathroom.
"Do you want me to go in with you?"
"No," Rose snapped. She starting to get sleepy, but she didn't want a nap and she didn't want to sit on the potty.
"I'll be right outside."
Rose went in and pulled down her training pants. She sat on the potty and waited. Her eyes widened as she felt something. Standing up, she saw there was liquid in the potty.
"I did it!" she yelled, dancing around. Maybe this wasn't so hard? She grabbed the white bathroom paper and used it like Mummy had shown her. She then washed her hands, standing on another small ladder.
"Good job, Rose," Daddy Snake said once she left the bathroom. He handed her a marshmallow. "This is for using the potty."
Rose put the marshmallow in her mouth, savoring its sweetness. She grabbed her razzmatazz cup and took a drink of the cold water.
"Ready for your nap?"
"No."
"Alright, want to hear a story?"
"Maybe?" Rose said, trying to figure out if this was a trap of some sort.
"I've got a book about a dragon, where do you want to lay to hear the story? The sofa?"
"Too bumpy."
"The floor?"
"Too hard!"
Rose watched Daddy Snake smile.
"What about your bed?"
"It's really soft, and not bumpy and Blinky's there," Rose said. Her bed sounded like a very good place to hear a story. She allowed him to pick her up and carry her there. Once in her bed, he handed her Blinky, her stuffed dragon. She pulled the blanket over her head as Daddy Snake started reading about a dragon. She'd only heard a few words before falling asleep, wishing Daddy Snake could be her real daddy now.
