THE BOND OF BROTHERHOOD
- SO YOU WANT A WAR, HUH? -
Harry was raised as a fully welcomed and accepted member of the Dursley family. In the late Spring, just before his fourth birthday, he was at the park with his family. Aunt Petunia was pushing Dudley's swing and Uncle Vern was pushing his swing.
"Uncle Vern?" queried Harry.
"Yes, Harry."
"I don't like my name," said Harry.
"Why not?"
"The kids at preschool said it means I'm furry. I don't wanna be furry!"
Vernon smiled to Petunia over the head of both boys, she responded with a shrug.
"What name do you want then, champ?"
"Just change it a little bit. I want to be Harris."
"Okay, from now on little man, you are Harris James Potter!"
"Dursley! Gotsta be Dursley!" he mumbled.
"What's that little man? I'm not sure I heard you," asked Vernon.
"Harris James Potter-Dursley!" declared Harris.
"Okay, you got it. From now on you are Harris James Potter-Dursley," announced Vernon.
"For really, real?"
"I will make sure. I'll have a meeting with some lawyers and make sure all the proper papers are filled out and signed," said Vernon.
"You're the bestest, Uncle Vern."
Vernon chuckled and continued to swing his youngest boy.
The next week Vernon made an appointment with his lawyer, to start the paperwork. It took some time, to get it done, because Vernon and Petunia had no birth certificate for Harris or a copy of a death certificate for his parents. Six months of back and forth, and skating on the edge of what wasn't and wasn't strictly legal, finally paid off. Documents arrived with Harris' new name, fully registering him for the first time ever with all of the Counties and Courts of Britain.
Maybe it was because Harris wanted it so much, maybe the Fates wanted it, but magic made it happen. If anyone cared to actually check, Harris James Potter-Dursley was now fully registered in all court files within Magical Community as well.
Harris and Dudley were very close, almost like twins. They were both the stars of all the local junior sports teams.
When Harris was eight, his aunt started to tell him about his magical heritage. She told him, "Once there was a time that your mother and I were very close, as close as you and Dudley are, but after she went to that wizard school we grew apart. Eventually we stopped talking and only sent each other a letter at Christmas, but even those became shorter and shorter, until they were just a few sentences quickly scribbled inside a Christmas card."
Harris was now very afraid that the same thing might happen to him and Dudley, so he decided he would make it impossible. He faced Dudley who he thought of as his big brother and said, "I swear on all that I am, I will never let that happen to me and my brother Dudley. I swear I will never be a student at Hogwarts, unless Dudley comes too. So There!"
It was just as if he had declared, 'So Mote It Be', because when he finished his declaration, a visible thread of magic shot out his chest and into Dudley's. Both boys glowed for several moments.
A few months later as Harris thought about everything his aunt had told him about his heritage and what the magical community might expect from him, he realized that the scar on his forehead would play a big part of what was expected, so he asked his aunt and uncle to help him have it removed. By the time he was nine the scar had been removed with plastic surgery and he had laser eye surgery. Once more it may have been a child's Wish Magic aiding them, but now he and Dudley looked even more alike, except for the colour of their hair and eyes, many would have taken them for twins.
When Dudley turned eleven, they had a small family gathering with just the four of them. They made it a tradition, ever since Harris had first came to them that the big party would be on a Saturday in between both birthdays and that is when they would invite all their friends.
When Harris turned eleven, the family of four had just sat down to a family lunch in the backyard, when an Owl swooped into the yard, dropped a letter, and took off again with barely a pause. Harris looked at the letter, shrugged and opened it up. He scanned briefly, then threw it in the trash.
Two weeks later, a very large man came to the door and banged on it so hard, he broke it down. The family were stunned and unsure of what to do, when suddenly the large man just grabbed Harris and said they were going shopping.
Harris fought with all that he had in him. He kicked and he screamed, but for all the big man reacted, he might as well have been a fly. He was screaming "Kidnapper!" and "Stranger, Danger!", just like he had been taught at school, but he got no response whatsoever.
They entered what Harris knew to be Diagon Alley from everything his aunt had told him. Harris was yelling, "Kidnapper! Call the authorities!" at the top of his lungs, but he was ignored by all. Harris was dragged to a large white building, that he knew to be the Wizarding bank. He was dragged to an open teller.
"We need to go to Potter Vault," said the big man, putting a key on the counter.
Harris quickly reached out and grabbed the key, before the Goblin could. He looked at the Goblin, "Is this mine?"
The Goblin nodded with a big smile on his face and said, "But of course it is yours, young Potter."
Harris started to put it in his pocket, but he decided to have some extra insurance, so he tucked it inside the elastic band of his underwear, "Well, then I am taking it. I DID NOT give this kidnapper permission to have it and I do not know how he even got it."
"Come now lad, give the nice Goblin yer key. We have to go to yer Vault and get yer money."
"NO! You broke in to my house! You kidnapped me! And now you think I am going to help you steal from me," yelled Harris.
"I'm not gonna steal from ya. The Hea'master asked me to take ya shopping fer yer school things. Now we need to get money from yer Vault in order to buy yer things."
"NO! I have money in my pocket and if my money isn't good enough, then there is nothing I would want," said Harris. He turned to the Goblin. "Hey Goblin, I don't know your name, but you are a witness to a kidnapping. I clearly stated in front of you, THAT THIS MAN BROKE DOWN THE DOOR OF MY HOUSE AND KIDNAPPED ME! Why aren't you calling the authorities?"
"Lad, you cut the teasing. That's not somethin' you should joke abou' with a Goblin," said the big man.
"Who's joking?! I am being completely sincere! You look at that Goblin and swear you didn't break down my front door."
The large man knowing that he had in fact broken the door, decided he needed to hurry things along. "Give. Me. The. Key!"
"NO! The Goblin said it's mine, so I am gonna keep it!"
"All right, I have had about enough. The Hea'master will have to sort out yer other stuff later, but he said that we were to be sure to get yer wand today. I have enough fer that, so let's go. We'll get yer wand, then I'll take ya home and let the Hea'master sort ya," said the big man who still hadn't introduced himself, as he grabbed Harris by the arm and once again literally dragged him, past many onlookers who did nothing to help the obviously frightened boy.
The big man dragged him to a weird shop and pushed him up to the counter.
"Lo. Ollivander, young Harry is here for his wand."
"HARRIS! My name is Harris!" shouted Harris. He looked at this new person and asked, "Are you going to ignore me as well?"
"What do you mean?" asked the man.
"This man broke down the door to my home and kidnapped me from my family who are probably going out of their minds while trying to tell the police what happened. Are you going to call the authorities?"
"Don' mind him Ollivander. He's been playing that game since I got him from his relatives. I thought if I played along at first, he'd let up, but ya can see, he didn'. So if you could get his wand, then I'll take him back home and let the Hea'master sort the rest."
"All right. Let's get started then," said the man.
Harris had become angry that this new person was going to ignore him just because his kidnapper told him to.
The next while was spent with Harris being forced to hold different wands, none of them made any reaction of any kind, but eventually the clerk pronounced the wand that had just currently been forced into his hand as 'the one'. Then he went on to babble a story about how it was the brother to the wand that killed his parents and seemed to act as if he thought the subject of murder was amusing.
Harris was horrified. He stormed out of the shop and ran toward the bar they had arrived through, when suddenly his kidnapper caught up with him and grabbed him from behind, by the back his shirt nearly strangling him.
"There was no call fer ya to run off like that, I said I'd take ya home."
A short time after, Harris was left at a bus stop and told "I think that you can find your own way from here. I need to get back and talk to the Hea'master."
Two hours later after using his own bus pass to get home, Harris was with his family filing a police report.
"The kidnapper grabbed me and I fought him as hard as I could, but he was huge. I got bruises on my arms and my neck, from when he pulled me by the back my shirt." The police took photos of all the bruises and the tears that had appeared in the shirt. "We were going so fast, I didn't really know where we were. He took me to a bank, I had never seen before and told he needed me to help him get into the Potter Family Vault. I think he was talking about a safety deposit box, that had some security protocols that made sure that, only I as the last living family member could access it. So, I refused. I told him there was no way I would help him steal from me. Then I told the bank teller that I was kidnapped and asked him to call the authorities. The big man, who by the way smelled like alcohol, told the clerk that I was playing a game and I was ignored. The big man was becoming angry at my refusal to cooperate. So he dragged me out of the bank and took me to store that his Master told him to take me to. He addressed the clerk by name. It was Olli… something. I can't be completely sure because the big man kept slurring his words a lot and I can't remember if the clerk said his name. They talked awhile, and I asked for help again and I was ignored again. Then the clerk made a joke about my parent's murder that happened when I was just a baby. I was horrified, so I ran out, but I wasn't able to get far, before the big man grabbed me my the back of shirt and started dragging me away again. Shortly after that he left me at a bus stop and told me he had to get back to his Master."
"And that's when you used your bus pass to get home?" asked the officer.
"Yes, Sir."
"Why do you think he let you go?"
"I don't why he decided to let me go. Maybe he finally realized that I wasn't going to help him, but he did often say that his Master would sort me out later. Do you think that means they are going to try again?"
"It does sound like they might. I think that the big man wasn't very bright and his Master will be angry that he let you go, instead of bringing you to him. But we will put out an alert and we will have extra patrols in your neighborhood. The first sign of this guy or someone you think might be working with him, I want you to call the police. Is that understood?"
"Yes Sir, you can count on it," said Harris, who was currently clinging to his aunt with one hand and his brother with the other.
A few of the officers were very familiar with the Dursley family, because they had children that had played on the same sports teams. They knew that Harris and his adoptive brother Dudley were generally inseparable and always did everything together. They also knew that both boys were often seen taking part in many of local charity drives and bazaars. The boys were always the first to volunteer to shovel snow with every first snowfall or walk younger kids from their neighborhood to and from school.
Both boys had become neighborhood favorites and when word spread about the kidnapping, you can bet that the whole neighborhood was on the lookout to keep them safe in return for all that they had done.
The police had taken photos of the damage to front entrance of the house and had already taken statements from the rest of family while they waited for the expected ransom call. When Harris had arrived back alone but still shaken up, they immediately got his statement.
After the police finished and left, Vernon then had to make a separate report to the insurance adjusters as they took additional photos and made repair cost estimates. They explained that the repairs could take a few days and offered to put the family up at a local hotel to help keep them safe, but the police had already offered to have someone stay at the home until the repairs were completed.
While Vernon was dealing with all this, Harris had gone to the back yard barbeque pit and proceeded to snap the wand that he had found to be in his pocket into as many small pieces as he could and then mix the pieces with the firewood. He refused to keep anything that would be a constant reminder of the man that had murdered his parents.
Harris' Vault key was placed in the wall safe in Vernon's home office and afterwards Harris placed both of his hands over the wall safe and said, "Let no one that does not have the Dursley name find this safe." The safe glowed momentarily.
The family tried to put the event out of their minds and continue on as normally as they could, but they knew the wizards would try again. They were each angry that those wizards had ignored Harris' existence for more than a decade and now they were trying to tear the family apart. The wizards thought that they could just come into their lives as if it was nothing. Like Harris was something that they could just tuck out of sight until they decided they wanted him back. Well those wizards were going to have a fight on their hands.
Harris and Dudley went shopping for their school things together. They were originally going to attend Vernon's alma mater, Smeltings Academy, but because of their sports achievements, both boys had received invites to tour an elite Boarding school that was known for its sports program, after all a lot of sports equipment bore the name of the school. So, the boys agreed to attend Rawlings Academy, besides it was closer to home and the Academy allowed for weekend visits home.
The afternoon of September first arrived and Vernon drove his boys to school and helped them carry their luggage to their dorm. He left the boys to settle in while he went to talk to the Dean to be sure that Dean Fraser, was aware of the kidnapping and Police Report that had been filed.
The boys had just completed the freshman assembly and were headed to the dining hall, when Harris was told by a prefect that he was needed in the Dean's office. Thinking that Uncle Vernon was still with the Dean and needed the boys to finalize some paperwork or other, Harris asked that his brother go with him to save having to fetch him if he was needed. The prefect thought this was a good idea and led both boys to the Dean's office.
When they arrived, Harris and Dudley entered the office, to find a tall man with long dark hair scowling at the Dean.
"Mr Dursley…" the man started.
"Potter-Dursley!" interrupted, Harris.
"I'm sorry?"
"I'm adopted, but I kept my birth name and hyphenated it with my family's name, so it's Potter-Dursley."
"I'll make sure that's noted in your file," said the Dean as he made a note. "As I was saying, Mr Potter-Dursley, this man has informed me that you are supposed to be attending a different school."
"No Sir, Dean Fraser, sir. My uncle dropped us both off and he said that he would speak with you before he left to make sure you knew… about another incident that happened a month ago?" said Harris trying to alert his Dean to the possible danger. "Did you call my uncle?"
"Yes I did. He had just returned home and now both he and your aunt are on their way here with some additional help."
"Thank you, Dean Fraser, Sir."
"Potter, I do not know what you think you are trying to pull, but you know full well you are supposed to be at the school your parents chose for you."
"Sir, I am sorry, but I don't know who you are. We have never met before, but allow me to introduce my self. My name is Harris James Potter-Dursley, this is my brother Dudley Darren Dursley. I am familiar with the school that my birth parents choose and I happen to know it is a school of Art." Dudley nodded. "Neither my brother or I, are artist." Dudley shook his head. "We are both athletes and have therefore chosen to attend an Academy well known for its Athletic Program."
"That's right, you tell him little brother," said Dudley.
"Thanks, Big D."
"I don't have time for this. You are coming with me. NOW!" The man them pulled out his wand, pointed at Dean Fraser and mumbled something under his breath and the Dean slumped over. He turned the wand on Dudley.
"NO!" Harris shouted. "Dudley!"
It was too late Dudley was slumped over. Harris was in shock. He thought his brother might be dead. He stared at Dudley praying for him to move.
The next thing Harris was aware of, he was standing at the front of a large Dining Hall that he knew wasn't a part of Rawlings. The Hall was packed with kids of all ages who were all staring at Harris. Harris was now very scared, it had become obvious that the dark haired man had kidnapped him with magic. All he could think about was Dudley. 'Was he alive?'
"Mr Potter, please sit on the stool and put the Sorting Hat on your head, so that we may complete this year's Sorting," said a lady with a very stern expression.
"I don't know where I am. Who are you people? You are not going to get away with kidnapping me again. The police have a full report of the last kidnapping." Harris faced the crowd of kids. "SOMEONE CALL THE POLICE! I HAVE BEEN KIDNAPPED! I AM NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE! SOMEONE HELP ME! PLEASE!"
Everyone started laughing and pointing at him, like they thought he was just playing around.
The lady pushed him onto the stool. "You have carried this charade far enough Mr Potter! I demand that you stop it at once!"
Then she put a dirty wrinkled hat on his head.
Harris was sobbing, "PLEASE, did you hurt my brother? Is he okay? Please! I just want to go home."
"Enough Potter! Be quiet," ordered the lady.
Harris continued sobbing. He heard some voices in the crowd.
'I don't think he's faking.'
'Maybe we should get help.'
Then there was a voice in his head. "What's wrong young man?"
"I'm not supposed to be here. I was at school with my brother. The dark haired man at the end of the table, came to the school and did some magic. The Dean and my brother both fell over and now I'm here - and I don't know what happened to my brother. I'm afraid he's dead, because he wasn't moving and he wouldn't answer me. I want my aunt. I want my uncle. And I really want my brother!"
"You did not choose to be here?"
"NO!"
"You did not choose to be sorted?"
"NO! I don't even know what that means!"
"I have alerted the Ministry, Aurors - Law Officials are on their way. They will be here momentarily," said the Hat.
"Thank you, Mr Hat," said Harris still sobbing heavily.
The Hat then spoke loud enough for the entire Hall to hear as he addressed the Headmaster. "ALBUS, ARE YOU AWARE THAT TWO HEADMASTERS AGO, I HAD SOME EXTRA SAFETY PROTOCALS EMBEDDED INTO MY MAGIC?"
"No, I was not aware. Perhaps after you have finished sorting Mr Potter, we can discuss the matter in my office," said the old man, that Harris knew to be Dumbledore.
"I WILL NOT BE SORTING THIS YOUNG MAN! YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW HIS NAME! THE EXTRA SAFTEY PROTOCOLS I WAS SPEAKING OF - ALLOW ME TO ALERT THE MINISTRY AND CALL AURORS TO THE SCHOOL!"
"I assure you, the young man's name is Harry Potter and he needs to be sorted. You should not be placating him and thus allowing him to continue his little game."
"I AM ABLE TO SEE INSIDE THIS YOUNG MAN'S HEAD AND I CAN ASSURE YOU AND EVERYONE HERE…. THIS IS NO GAME! THE AURORS ARE ALREADY HERE. THEY ARE COMING THROUGH THE FRONT GATES NOW!
Harris was still sobbing as moments later the Great Hall doors crashed open and a full dozen duly robed Aurors entered with their wands drawn and approached the Head table, led by Amelia Bones, the Head of Magical Law Enforcement, herself. After all, Amelia's own niece had just started to attend Hogwarts and if their was a problem at the school that could endanger little Susan, then Amelia wanted to be on hand.
"What's going on here?" she demanded. "Why were we called?"
The Sorting Hat spoke up, "I CALLED YOU. - IT IS A SAFETY PROTOCOL THAT WAS EMBEDDED INTO MY MAGIC. THIS YOUNG MAN WAS KIDNAPPED FROM HIS SCHOOL AND BROUGHT HERE AGAINST HIS WILL AND WITHOUT THE PERMISSONS OF HIS LEGALLY REGISTERED GUARDIANS!"
Madame Bones approached the sobbing boy and knelt down before him.
"I am Madame Bones and I am the Head of Magical Law. What is your name?" she asked.
"My name is Harris James Potter-Dursley. Please I just need to know what happened to my brother. We were at school together in the Dean's office, when that man…," Harris pointed at the dark haired man. "Did something and I think my brother's dead. I think that man killed him and brought me here. Please, I have always been able to sense my brother, but I can't feel him anymore. I need to know what happened to him. PLEASE!"
"Wait here, I will find out. I promise!" said Madame Bones.
Harris nodded his head.
Madame Bones stood and advanced on the man Harris had pointed at.
"You! You're Snape, right?"
"Yes," answered the man who was starting to show some worry about the situation that his actions had caused.
"Did you use unauthorized magic on a Muggle, two minor children and then take one against his will?"
"It is not like that. The Headmaster ordered me to collect Potter and bring him to Hogwarts using any means necessary. The boy refused to come with me. I stunned the man and both boys. Then I Oblivated the other two and took Potter. I portkeyed him here. Potter was unhurt. Then he started that ridiculous sob story in order to get attention."
"WHAT DOES THAT MEAN - OBLIIVATE? What happened to my brother? Is Dudley okay? PLEASE!… PLEASE! I need my brother!" Harris started to hyperventilate. "PLEASE! I can't breathe! I need my brother!"
"Aurors arrest Snape, for magic on a Muggle and kidnapping, and be sure to use our strongest magic blocking cuffs," ordered Madame Bones.
Two students approached her, "Madame Bones ma'am, we don't know what's going on, but Harris looks like what happened to me when my twin and I were separated for three days when Fred had Wizard Mumps. The Healer said that our twin bond was exceptionally strong and our magic wouldn't let us be apart," said George.
"And because of that bond George had to go though Mumps too. We don't know who Dudley is, but you need to get those two together, fast," said Fred.
"Fred's right. Harris needs his brother," said George.
Harris by now was very pale and on the verge of passing out due to lack of oxygen as his hyperventilation had increased. Madame Bones approached him.
"Mr Pot…. Harris, I promise I will not hurt you, but I need to use magic on you. I will just put you to sleep until we find your brother. Okay?"
Harris was past the ability to speak, so he just nodded his head and Madame Bones placed a Sleeping Charm on him.
By now Dumbledore was attempting to negotiate with the Aurors who were taking Snape into custody.
When Harris awoke he was in a bed with Dudley sleeping beside him and his aunt was sitting next to the bed in a light doze.
"Aunt Petunia?" Harris called out softly, so that he wouldn't wake Dudley.
She woke immediately. "Harris, finally! Are you okay?"
"I'm fine! But is Dudley?" He clutched Dudley's hand. "When I saw him fall over, I was so scared that he was dead and when I got here, I couldn't feel him. I've always been able to sense Duds, even when we were small. That's how come I was always good at finding him when we played Hide and Seek," rambled Harris.
"Harris, you need to calm down," said Petunia. "Dudley is fine! Whatever magic Snape did, it didn't work on your brother. He just pretended that it did, while copying Dean Fraser's actions, so that he would be able to tell your Uncle and I what happened. He knew that you would be scared, but he didn't want to chance that the wizard would try something else on him."
"Good… I'm glad he's not dead…" yawned Harris. "I'm going back to sleep."
"Okay Harris. You sleep and I will be right here beside you."
The next time he woke, it was clearly morning. He stretched as a voice called out.
"It's about time, little brother!" called Dudley while eating his breakfast.
"DUDLEY!" shouted Harris, throwing himself at his brother. The boys hugged and patted each other on the back. "So, what's going on Big D?"
"Not sure. Those magic cops, found out about the first kidnapping and arrested that big guy. Then they asked him who the store clerk was that you asked for help and sent some people to arrest him too. You really got things started, Harris."
"It's their own fault. They should have left us alone or at least talked to us like civilized people, instead of just barging in without any explanation." Harris shook his head. "Is that food any good, cause I haven't had anything since lunch before we went to Rawlings."
"The food is great! Just don't drink that orange stuff. I thought it was orange juice, so I took a gulp and nearly puked. I asked another kid that was in here what it was and he said that it's pumpkin juice."
"Eww! They actually drink that stuff?"
"Yes we do Mr Potter," said a woman who had entered, "And it's quite delicious."
Harris ignored her, since she couldn't get his name right after he had announced it in front of the entire school, but he moved closer to Dudley.
"How are you feeling Mr Potter?"
Harris continued eating.
"Mr Potter?"
"Ma'am after all that my little brother has been through, is it really too much to ask that you at least get his name right?" demanded Dudley.
"I know that boy's name - I delivered him," said the woman.
"Whoop de do! I suppose that you think that makes it impossible for him to have been adopted and his name changed and for my father to have full documentation made to prove his new identity?" said Dudley. "Besides he doesn't have a clue who you are. And the last two people that came up to him without introduction, KIDNAPPED HIM! So he has every right to ignore you."
Harris smiled at his brother, "Thanks Duds and have I told you lately that you are the greatest and most amazing big brother I could ever hope for."
"Very well, I am Madame Pomfrey the school nurse or as I prefer the Matron," stressed the lady. "How shall I address you young man?"
Harris turned her, "I swear you people are hard of hearing or just completely incapable of basic comprehension." Then speaking slowly and over enunciating, "MY. NAME. IS. HARRIS. JAMES. POTTER-DURSLEY. You may address me as Mr Potter-Dursley and I don't think that it is any of your business how I am. You are nothing and nobody to me, so go away." Harris turned back to his brother, "Duds, where's your mom? I want to go home."
"I'd go check, but I don't want to leave you here alone with one of them. Who knows what she might try if there was no witness," answered Dudley eying the nurse with suspicion.
"Too right!" huffed Harris.
The nurse stormed into her office and slammed the door.
Just as they finished eating, Madame Bones entered the room with Petunia.
"Mr Potter-Dursley…" she stated.
Harris smiled, "Finally someone that knows my name. Ma'am what can I help you with?"
"Members of the Wizengamot, that's the Magical Court System in Britain, have declared you a Ward of Hogwarts."
"What does that mean?" asked Harris and Dudley together.
"It means that until you are seventeen, the adult age of a wizard, you have to remain at Hogwarts."
"Year round?" asked Dudley.
"I never get to go home again for six years! I'm kidnapped... twice... And I go to prison for six years? What about my family?" asked Harris.
"That is still being discussed. Because of the Magic bond you have with your brother, the two of you can obviously not be apart. There are members of the Wizengamot that want to try and break the bond, but they were outvoted, so far."
"What good is my being here going to be? I refuse to participate! I refuse to wear their uniforms or maybe I should say prison garb! I refuse to take part in any class they have here! I don't even have a wand! What are they gonna make my brother and I do? Stare at the walls for six years?"
"Mr Hagrid and Mr Ollivander, both said that you have a wand, that was matched perfectly to you," said Madame Bones.
"Don't even bring up that farce! My hand was pried open with excessive force, then forcibly wrapped around a dozen different wands, none of which made any kind of reaction that I could see. I have medical records that show my hand was severely bruised when I returned home. Then that store clerk suddenly pronounces that not only did I find my match, but it was the brother wand to one that murdered my parents. Do you honestly think that I would want keep something like that? I snapped it into pieces and threw the pieces into our barbeque pit."
Bones was taking notes and Harris heard a gasp at the mention of snapping his wand from the other side of the curtain that been drawn around his bed. Bones excused herself to check with the Ministry and give them Harris' declaration. Petunia announced that she had to speak with Vernon and would be back in a two to three hours.
Harris pulled back the curtain, to find a blond haired boy sitting on the next bed.
"Hello!" said Harris. "You know it's not nice to eavesdrop."
"Definitely not," said Dudley, taking a position at his brother back, in case the magical tried something.
"But since you did, my name is Harris Potter-Dursley. This is my brother Dudley Dursley."
"I'm Draco Malfoy," answered the boy.
"Why are you here?" asked Harris.
"I'm sick of course," answered Draco defensively.
"Yeah right! More like you wanted to make sure you had all the inside info on what was going on, before anyone else," said Dudley.
Draco became sheepish and the brothers shared a nod.
"So what's your take on all this?" asked Harris.
Draco looked at Dudley with curiosity, "Is he a Muggle?"
"We have never been entirely sure. Besides, how many Muggles have you heard of with a Magical Bond?" asked Harris, "And... swear you'll keep a secret?"
Draco raised his wand as the brothers tensed. "I, Draco Malfoy swear to keep any secrets entrusted to me by the Dursley brothers. So Mote It Be!"
"So Mote It Be!" responded the brothers automatically.
"Why did we say that?" asked Dudley.
"Well it's part of a Magical Oath, because you asked for the Oath, after it was given, you had to declare that you excepted it," answered Draco with a shrug. "But a Muggle shouldn't have been compelled by the magic, so I guess that proves it."
The brother exchanged a look and they shrugged as well.
"What I started to say before, was, how many Muggles are impervious to an adult wizard's magic?" asked Harris.
"What do you mean?" asked Draco.
"You heard that Snape guy say it. He said, he stunned and Obliviated my brother," said Harris.
"Yeah! So?"
"It's not true. I admit he pointed his wand at me and mumbled some stuff, but I faked it by copying the Dean. I remember everything that happened," said Dudley.
Draco was in awe. "But, Professor Snape is one of the strongest wizards I know, not counting Dumbledore. Even my father is cautious whenever he's around Professor Snape."
Dudley just shrugged and smirked.
"So you want to help us get out of here?" asked Harris.
"Out of Hogwarts?" asked Draco.
"Eventually, but for now just out the infirmary. You gotta know some place we can go to hangout."
"Not really! I'm just a first-year like you were supposed to be, so I've only been here a day. I'd suggest the Slytherin Dorms, but after our Head of House was arrested for kidnapping you, I'm not sure the rest of Slytherin would welcome you."
"Was that the big guy or the tall one with long greasy looking hair?" asked Dudley.
"The tall wizard. The Oaf kidnapped you too?" Draco asked Harris.
"Yeah! A couple weeks after my birthday. He literally knocked down our front door and grabbed me from our home. Didn't stop to introduce himself or ask my family for permission or apologize for the damage he caused. He just grabbed me by the arm and dragged me away. He took me to the Goblin Bank and tried to make me help him get access to the Potter Vault! I refused. I tried calling for help, but I was ignored. I tried to run away, but he caught me. Then when he finally realized that I wasn't going to co-operate, he left me at a bus stop and told me to find my own way home."
Harris wrote a note to Petunia, with the current time written at the top, saying he needed some time to think and would return in two hours. He and Dudley both signed it. Draco helped them sneak out of the infirmary. The three of them didn't get far before they were stopped by a pair of red headed twins.
"Where are you three headed?" asked one.
"Yeah, because I think you just might need a pair of chaperones," said the other.
"We just want a quiet place to hang out for a few hours, without worrying about that nurse listening in," said Harris.
"We'll show you a place," said the first one. "By the way I'm George and he's Fred."
Harris looked back and forth between the two of them for a moment, then he nodded, "Okay, lead on."
"What was that about?" asked Fred.
"Twins have never been able to fool my brother. As long as you weren't lying about who each of you are, then he will always know which one he's talking to," said Dudley.
"How, because our own parents can't even tell the difference?" asked George.
"Don't know, but sometimes I can do it too, just not as good as Harris."
"As for your parents," said Harris, "They probably don't want it bad enough, 'cause if they did, they'd find a way."
The twins thought about this as they led the other three to a old passage way that caved in halfway down its length, but it left them plenty of room to hang out and talk.
Each of the five swore a Secrecy Oath, even Dudley. The Weasley twins told the Dursley brothers everything they knew about Magical Brother Bonds.
"It was probably the Bond that saved me, then," declared Dudley. "I remember that just as that Snape guy turned his wand on me, Harris screamed NO! He was probably thinking about protecting me and sent that protection through our Bond and I was just concentrating on remembering as much detail as possible so that I could tell my mom and dad everything that happened, so I probably drew on the Bond to protect my memories."
"That makes sense." said George while nodding.
"So what does that make Dudley? Cause he's obviously not a regular Muggle," asked Harris.
"I heard my father talk about it once and I think Dudley is a Hedge Wizard," said Draco.
"What's that?" asked Dudley.
"It's one step above a Squib," answered Draco.
"But what's a Squib?" asked Harris.
"Well it's like the opposite of your birth mom," said George.
"Right! Your mom was a magical born to a non-magical family. A Squib is a non-magical born to a magical family," said Fred.
"That can happen?" asked Dudley.
"Sure it happens all the time. The Squibs are usually cast out of their families and end up in the Muggle World. Our mom has a Squib cousin that neither of our parents will even acknowledge when they see him out in public with his family," said Fred.
"Our oldest brother who works as a Curse Breaker for the Goblins, once said that the Goblins believe that the cast out Squibs are the reason for the Muggle-borns. They believe that just because a Squib can't use their magic, doesn't mean they can't pass the magical genes on to their kids."
"That actually makes sense. If there is a Squib in the Evans family, that caused my mom to have magic, then why not Dudley on a smaller scale as well," said Harris.
"Let's get back to that Hedge Wizard thing," said Dudley. "Draco, explain more about that."
"Hedge Wizards being just one step above Squibs, still don't have enough magic to receive a Hogwarts letter or set off any Underage Sorcery Alerts at the Ministry, but they have been noted to have one or two unique gifts. Some will have Elemental Ability, like changing water temperatures or never having their plants die. Some can see magic, and would know if an item has magical properties, just by looking at it. Maybe Dudley's gift is magic shields," explained Draco.
The five boys hung out for a full two hours, and Harris and Dudley had gone over the story of the two kidnappings and the fact that a police report was taken and also the fact that their school was probably on full alert and because of the security cameras on the front entrance to Rawlings Academy, they would have caught Snape entering the school on camera and distributed photos to all area police and maybe even the television stations.
Harris was certain that the story would be all over Hogwarts before the end of day.
"What are the chances of getting the majority of the students to protest me being held prisoner here for six years?" he asked.
"What do you mean held prisoner?" asked George.
"Well there's nothing wrong with me, so why do you think I'm being kept here, in an infirmary, knowing I would rather be at my own school?" asked Harris.
The twins shared a look.
"That Bones lady said the wizard court thing, decided that Harris was a Ward of Hogwarts until he's seventeen," said Dudley.
"The way I see it, that means the courts decided to actually give me to the man that ordered my kidnapping. And now that same court is debating whether or not they should try an break our Brother Bond," said Harris.
"They can't do that!" declared Fred.
"There is a very real possibility that if they do break the Bond, that you two would end up in a coma or dead," said George.
"And more than fifty percent of the time, anyone that lives through the Bond breaking, ends up losing their magic," said Fred.
"I am starting to think that the Wizard court people could care less. After all I got kidnapped twice, and I go to prison for six years," answered Harris.
"Harris," interrupted Dudley, "It's almost two hours, we have to head back or mom will worry, that you've been kidnapped again."
Harris looked at the other three boys and raised his fist, "But I think I can take these kidnappers, besides your with me this time. So you take on the two red heads and I'll take on the little guy."
"Why do I have to take on two?" asked Dudley with a smile.
"Cause you're the big brother and it's your job to protect me," said Harris with a smirk.
"Right of course it is! How could I forget?! But since we don't have time, we'll have to do a rain check," Dudley responded with a smirk.
All five boys shared a chuckle as they headed back toward the Infirmary. The twins and Draco split off at the entrance and say they hope to talk with the brothers again.
Dudley and Harris entered the Infirmary and were nearly pounced on by Petunia.
"There you two are. I appreciate the note, but it left me with nothing to do, but sit here with them," said Petunia with a disgusted tone and expression.
The boys shared a look and a laugh, "Sorry, Mom," they echoed.
"I thought you were going to talk to dad?" asked Dudley.
"That local village just the other side of the front gates actually managed to have a phone. But it is not very private, so I was not able to talk long or say much with a whole crowd of people staring at me like I was some sort of zoo exhibit."
Just then Madame Bones returned.
"Mr Potter-Dursley, I have the latest update. First, it has now been declared that your are not to receive access to your inheritance until you graduate from Hogwarts, so you are asked to turn over the key to your Vault."
Harris smirked, "If they can find it, they can have it. But I refuse to turn over anything. What part of 'I. Will. Not. Co-operate.' do they not understand? Besides shouldn't you be addressing my guardian, who is right there." He pointed to his Aunt.
But, of course the lady ignored the last part. "Very well," said Bones as she made a note, "Next it was decided that because Mr Hagrid paid for the wand out of his own pocket, you essentially destroyed his property and the court..."
"Wait," interrupted Petunia. "What is the Muggle equivalent of the wand cost?" she asked.
"Why is that relevant?" asked Bones.
"Is it more than the cost of the repairs to my home? Repairs that had to be done, because of the damage that was caused by Mr Hagrid. Damage that you now have the evidence of, because I personally gave you a copy of the police report. A report that included photos of the damage and copies of the Repair Cost Estimates. Because of the damage to our home's front door, we had to live in an unsecured house for three days. Therefore... if anything Mr Hagrid still owes us. Then there's punitive damages cost of the fact that a eleven year old boy was scared out his mind and bruised so severely that the bruises took weeks to fade. You have copies of the photos taken of those bruises too," declared Petunia.
"I shall report your countersuit," said Bones as she took notes.
"Wait! Countersuit?" said Harris. "Are you saying that there is a full Trial going on, without us being able to defend ourselves or present our side. Who is representing our side?"
"The Head of Wizengamot is allowing me relay information back and forth and present it to the court," said Bones.
"Wait again! The Head of the Wizengamot? According to my Hogwarts letter, that's Dumbledore. The man who sent kidnappers after me is now the ultimate Judge of what is to happen?"
"It was decided that although Dumbledore did ask both gentlemen to approach you on his behalf. He was believing in all good faith that they would present themselves in a proper manner. The gentleman each misconstrued his request and took it upon themselves to act of their own accord, therefore Mr Dumbledore is innocent of any wrong doing."
"Oh really!" said Harris, "Well I believe all that to be hogwash, therefore I have decided that I am done speaking to any of you magicals, until I am allowed to return home. So I have spoken, SO MOTE IT BE!"
There was a small glow around Harris as he turned his back to Madame Bones.
"SO MOTE IT BE," echoed Dudley, copying Harris actions. There was a small glow around him as well.
Madame Bones looked to Petunia, who could only shrug.
For the rest of that day and all of the next, the two boys held to their Oath and refused to speak to anyone but Petunia. They added the additional refusal to eat anything that was provided by the magicals and only slept in rotating shifts for three hours at a time.
Just as Harris predicted the twins and Draco had made sure the story was spread all over Hogwarts and by the end of day two, at least a third of the student population had also stopped eating and stopped going to class. Some of the more die hard Harry Potter fans had even snapped their wands. Students were now wandering the halls at all hours.
Word spread to the local Wizarding media on day three and reporters had flocked to the gates of Hogwarts. Petunia spoke to them and made sure that their side of the story was told. As a few more days passed, the boys still had not eaten and so were becoming very weak. Petunia reached out to other Muggle-born families out of desperation and started a chain that brought Muggle fast food into Hogwarts. She used the argument that if the boys didn't eat they would pass out and the Magicals would then use who knows what kind of magic on them, so the boys caved on the food issue as long as it was not provided by magicals. They then started a no bathing protest and no changing their clothes, especially after finding out about house-elves that could take away their Muggle clothes and leave them with no alternative, but to dress in the Hogwarts uniforms that the nurse had brought in.
As the second week of their protest started, the International press had got word and students from other schools were sending letters to the boys. Some parents had even pulled their kids out of the school that had been made into a prison, while telling anyone that would listen that they were afraid that their kids might be declared Wards of Hogwarts next. This in turn inspired more parents to remove their kids from Hogwarts.
The Sorting Hat decided that it wanted to get in on the act. Seeing inside the head of the sobbing boy had left an impression on the Hat and it was now using its emergency safety protocols to call the Aurors to Hogwarts at all different hours. Day and Night.
The school had no Potions Professor! No Head of Slytherin! The Headmaster was always at the Ministry! Reporters had set up a full campsite at the front gate! The Deputy Head was now teaching classes, attempting to manage the Gryffindor House, and doing all of Dumbledore's regular work, while the other two Heads of House tried to share the running of Slytherin House on top of running their own and teaching!
Now midway through the second week and over half of the remaining students were protesting, by not going to classes, refusing to wear uniforms and constantly interrupting the classes that were going on. Another dozen students were pulled out of Hogwarts and the Hogwarts ghosts and many of portraits had decided to take Harris side. They argued that although the castle had often been declared a sanctuary, it had never before been a prison.
Vernon was busy on the outside, he was working with Muggle Law Enforcement to get a meeting with the Prime Minister. Once the meeting was granted the two continued to meet daily to build a case that they could take to an even higher authority.
Dumbledore's actions were called in to question by the International Confederation of Wizards. Everyone wanted to know why this one boy had been kidnapped twice only to be imprisoned in a school. Dumbledore tried to talk to Harris ... sort of. Because he kept using the name Harry, he was especially ignored.
It was suggested that the manner in which they declared their refusal to speak to magicals could be construed as a Magical Oath and therefore magic would not allow the boys to speak to anyone with magic, even if they changed their minds.
Three weeks had now passed and neither boy had bathed or changed clothes. At Petunia's insistence they did wash their hands and face before eating, but that was all. They still remained in the Infirmary, existing on a diet of nothing but Muggle fast food.
The Muggle Prime Minister now armed with various copies of magical newspapers and a copy of the police file, with photos of Harris' bruises and the damages done to the Dursley home, had a meeting with the Queen.
Within the next few days the British Ministry of Magic was attacked by the Queen's Armed Forces. Dumbledore was shot and killed in the act of raising his wand. It was said by some that he was only trying to quiet the crowd, but no can be certain because others said that the wand was definitely pointed at the Captain of the Royal Guard. A full dozen other wizards and witches were shot and killed as well, including the Minister and his Under-Secretary and the Hogwarts Defence Professor whom no one could discern why he was even at the Ministry that day.
Harris and Dudley were allowed to leave Hogwarts and they returned to Rawlings a full month behind on their school work, but they were determined to catch up. The family knew that Harris would have to have magical training, but thanks to the contacts that Petunia had made with the Muggle-born families there was no shortage of possible tutors.
The Dursley brothers remained in contact with the Weasley twins and Draco Malfoy. All five would get together each summer and joke about the month that Hogwarts had been held hostage by the first prisoner that had ever been sentenced to do time inside the castle.
It was talked about for years, how one eleven year old wizard and one eleven year old 'thought to be' Muggle brought the whole wizarding world to notice.
All the wizards had to do was leave Harris alone. They had abandoned him to the Muggle World and it was their fault that he didn't want to come back.
~~~ THE END ~~~
