Chapter 19: Rescuing Berk Part 3
"Dragon Attack!" echoed as far as it could within Berk, alerting everyone that was around. The shout was overshadowed by the loud dragon roars, and the many wing beats.
Astrid and Stoick both looked up into the sky as much needed relief washed over them upon seeing the dragons heading for Berk. Now all the attention would be off of them as the Berserkers and Outcasts will be focusing on them, yet that didn't mean that the dragons could hold their own, they would still need help.
"I knew the twins could do it," Astrid smiled, glad to see that part of the plan was working.
"That I can see," Stoick nodded, happy to see that things were going their way. Before he could ask more he turned his attention to the front of the building as voices could be heard, mainly from the two that were supposed to be guarding him.
"What in Thor's name is going on!?" the first voice asked.
"I don't know but I'm not standing around to be a target, how about you?" the second voice spoke up as movement is heard.
Stoick didn't wait for an answer to be given as he rushed forward towards the front of the jails. He turned the corner and instantly saw two large Berserkers standing in front of the entrance. Both of them turning to him in complete surprise before the chief shoulder rushed the first one he saw, knocking him to the side and into the wall. The second Berserker raised up his axe in alarm, but Stoick's larger hand shot up and gripped the man's wrist, stopping him in place. Rearing his right hand back the chief launched it forward and connecting to his gut.
"GYAH!" all the air was robbed from the man's lungs as he bent over slightly, and the last thing he saw was the chief's fist delivering another punch, but to his face and like that nothing but darkness.
Stoick watched the final guard fall down to the ground, out cold as the small danger had passed. A sigh of relief was blown out, but also feeling good to get some frustrations out. Astrid and Stormfly rounded the corner as well and saw the scene before them.
"Nice one sir," Astrid responded, impressed with the chief's speed.
"No time for praise Astrid," Stoick responded as he looked over at the first Berserker he hit, who is now slumped against the wall. He reached down and picked up the discarded sword, the weapon feeling light in his hand, partially due to his size. The weapon itself was ok, but not his usual one but he can work with it. "The fight is on and it's time to take back our home. Get on your dragon and do some damage."
"What about you?" the blonde questioned, not wanting to leave him on his own. She has no concept of what he been through, but from what little she saw he could still fight. Yet, she also knew that she needed to keep Stoick safe, for Hiccup's sake most of all.
"I'll be fine," he smiled as he rested the blade of the sword on his shoulder. "After all I had to suffer from, I'm looking forward to some payback."
"Take care of them! I don't care how you do it, but I want them dealt with!" Dagur shouted at his men in anger. What terrible timing, now of all times when he has Hiccup right where he wants him, what were those idiots at the kill ring doing anyway? Despite that, it's a minor setback as he can still deal with Hiccup regardless.
Most of the soldiers scattered and went about to take up defensive positions, but only a couple remained where they were. "Sir, what about-"
"No! Hiccup is mine, no one is to lay a hand on him except me!" the Berserker chief ordered out as he turned forward, holding his sword forward.
Hiccup's body stiffened as all the attention was turned back towards him, yet most of Dagur's back up gone. Still, that didn't mean that he wasn't less dangerous, especially since his intent was practically written on his face. He knew for sure that with the dragons being released, that he hoped his dad and the rest of the villagers would follow suit. He needed help right now as it was just himself and Dagur, and to be honest he wasn't sure if he could last long like this.
"No escape this time Hiccup, you're mine and once I'm finished with you, your dragon will be next!" Dagur seethed out, taking a threatening step forward.
"You won't touch him!" Hiccup responded back; the fear being replaced with the need to protect Toothless. Pulling his shield up as his hand went for his belt but stopped. It then pulled away as he refrained from pulling out his knife…just the mere thought prevented him, he can't use it, he just can't.
"Try and stop me," Dagur replied before leaping forward, sword raised up, and bring it down.
"Arrgh!" Hiccup cried out as the blade made contact with his shield, the force of the impact causing pain to radiate through his arms. For being so intimidating Dagur does seem to back up his fierceness in terms of strength. If blocking just one strike did damage, then Hiccup wasn't sure if he could be able to block anymore. He cried out again as the blade struck metal, causing Hiccup to stumble to the side, and towards the chain that held one of Toothless' paws down. Unfortunately, he wasn't given a moment of reprieve, as Dagur raise his sword back. Knowing that his arms would give out just from that strike; Instinct took over as he dove to the side, towards the door just as the blade came down.
*Klang!*
The sword hit the chain as sparks flew, but it didn't cut it at all, but got a little stuck. Dagur gave a grunt as he pulled his weapon free, before turning back to Hiccup. "Nice try but it failed!" It was then the Berserker chief charged and shoulder rushed the teen, one of which Hiccup barely hand time to block with his shield.
"Gyah!" Hiccup cried out as the force of the rush launched him back, hitting the ground and rolling out of the storage building. The sight alone made Dagur chuckle to himself, stalking after his prey, ready to end things.
"NO!" Toothless cried upon witnessing that blow. The Night Fury struggled in his bindings, wanting so desperately to get free to help his rider. Hiccup needed him badly, but how can he help if he's still restrained? His paws kept pulling at the chains, making them taut, shaking them, anything to break free, but they were solid in design and didn't allow it…well, not quite. The metal holding his right upper paw jangled oddly, causing him to freeze and look at it. Both eyes rose in surprise upon finding that the metal there was chipped, not broken all the way, but the dragon could see cracks in the metal….right where Dagur's sword hit!
Both eyes rose up in realization as he focused all his energy into his right paw, pulling it hard with straining muscles. Slowly but surely the small cracks started to get larger. A sense of hope started to swell up within the dragon as he could possibly get free if he pulled hard enough. If he can get one paw free, then he can tear the muzzle off and blast the rest of the chains! He would be free and able to help his rider, so wasting no time he continued to pull with all his might.
Hiccup groaned as he came to a stop a few feet out of the storage building, thankfully not injured, except for twinge in his side. Looking up he saw Dagur approaching him maliciously, smirk on his face as he raised his sword up. Thinking quickly the teen rolled away just as the blade came down, hitting the ground. The Berserker chief frowned at the action made, "Why bother trying to flee? You can't escape, nor can you win. The dragons are a minor setback, but my men can handle them, as we are one of the best tribes that can kill them."
Hiccup got back to his feet and had a chance to look around, seeing the scene before him. All the Berserkers and Outcasts were scattered about, a majority of them having crossbows and firing up at the dragons. Who were flying in the air and trying to dodge the incoming arrows while shooting their fire at them, but weren't aiming fairly? Truth be told that most of the dragons weren't fed so a majority of them were running on low energy, not allowing them to be as efficient as they usually are. Hiccup didn't know that, but what he did know is that they won't sit by while their home is taken over. They will fight tooth and nails to reclaim what is theirs. Hiccup admired that but it also meant that they won't be able to get in close enough to help him, as long as their enemies kept shooting at them. Besides, the sword and axe wielding ones would also give them a problem.
Where were his friends? And most of all the rest of Berk's Vikings? He's on his own for right now and had to hold off Dagur. Doing his best to put up a brave front the one-legged teen got back to his feet, holding his shield up in defense, waiting for the next incoming attack. After all, It was all he could do for the time being.
Metal struck metal as Stoick clashed his sword against one of the Outcasts that he came across. Both of them trying to fight one another strength for strength, even though both knew which male is the superior one. The chief grunted as one hand released the hilt of his sword before grabbed his opponent and then spinning around and throwing him over towards one of the wagons. The Outcast cried out as he hit the metal contraption, which fell apart due to the impact.
"Incoming!" Astrid's voice was heard from above as Stoick heard the air being sliced. Little did he know is that two Berserkers were racing up to him from behind but luckily the blond saw this and had her dragon fire her spines down right in their paths, stopping them, making them trip and stumble backwards to avoid hitting them. Turning around Stoick saw them and launched himself upon them. Using his sword, he swung and knocked one of the weapons out of their hands, letting it fly off to the side. Snapping his arm back, he then elbowed the second one in the gut with his free hand before balling it up into a fist before sending it forward, striking him in the head, taking them down once again.
The area seemed cleared so the chief turned his eyes up to the sky and found Astrid hovering some yards into the air, "Can you see Hiccup?"
"Not yet, I'm just-"
*Whoosh!*
Stormfly faltered as an arrow just barely missed her and Astrid, yet she had to dodge another one that came sailing towards her. Stoick followed where the arrow originated, only for him to have to dive for the ground as another sailed towards him, embedding itself into the ground. There were some crossbowers on some of the houses, with a few on the ground, aiming at the three. Unfortunately, they weren't alone, as about just over a dozen Outcasts came into the fray, all of them setting their eyes on Stoick.
"Chief!" Astrid called out as more arrows were shot at her, prompting Stormfly to dodge them, but unable to fight back without risking getting hit.
"Damn," Stoick responded as he got to his feet and held his weapon out in defense. The enemy weren't intimidated as they started to close in. Still, the chief readied himself, in reality he could handle a few but not sure how many in truth.
"Coming through!" a voice shouted, prompting everyone to look up and see a monstrous Nightmare swooping down, firing a stream of fire between Stoick and the Outcasts, creating a barrier between them. Astrid and Stoick recognizing it as Snotlout and Hookfang being responsible for the intervention.
"Incoming!" another voice called out.
Flying fire balls were launched at the houses, causing the crossbowers to stumble and some falling off. Fishlegs, Meatlug, the twins along with Barf and Belch came into the picture, taking care of them and reliving Astrid and Stormfly of the arrows. The Outcasts and Berserkers were cut off from Berk's chief, but that was the least of their worries.
"Attack!" a voice boomed out from behind them, catching their attention. All eyes widen as the Vikings of Berk charged in, armed and ready for battle. The enemy turned their attention towards this new threat, unprepared for their intervention.
Stoick sighed in relief upon seeing his people, glad to know they are free and safe…but also now they are fighting to take back their home. He was about to jump back into the fight when the Riders landed next to him. "Chief! It's good to see you're ok," Fishlegs called out.
"Good work, everyone, right now I can't go further into this. I need you all need to repeal any more attackers, most of all you need to find Hiccup!" the chief instructed, now primarily concerned on needing to find his son.
"He's at the food storage," Snotlout informed the chief.
"Oh no," Stoick responded as he turned and looked up at the upper parts of Berk, knowing full well it'll be a long trek for him. He needed to get to him and make sure he's safe, but that is an obstacle of itself. Mainly as she saw more Berserkers and Outcasts coming down the ramps, creating more of a barrier. Growling some he turned to the riders. "You all need to go up there and find him but be careful of their crossbows."
"What about the villagers?" Fishlegs asked. "They're outnumbered and from what we can tell more of them are out in the forest and could come back."
Stoick growled some upon hearing that, not wanting that to be the case. His son is his primary concern in all this but looking at the villagers he knew that there weren't that many out, and they would need help most of all. The Riders can even the tide of battle in their favor but that would take away from his son, and his status being unknown only made him worry that much more. It was times like that being the chief was hard and hated as difficult decisions would need to be made, and this happens to be one of them.
Hiccup cried out as he landed on his back, pretty hard. Having been thrown once more, and flying a good distance away from his attacker. The teen had no idea Dagur was that strong but given his own size and weight it would be no problem for the one-legged teen to be thrown that easily. Which made the situation at hand even worse, especially as he looked up and found Dagur approaching him, sword in hand.
"You have no idea how long I have waited for this," the Berserker chief said, with a hint of excitement as the distance between them closed. He raised his sword up and brought it down with a shout.
Hiccup reacted immediately and rolled out of the way, the tip of the blade missing and embedding itself down into the dirt. Not stopping he kept up the roll until he was a good distance away before getting back to his feet, holding the shield up in defense. Both eyes locked onto Dagur as he easily pulled the blade free of the dirt, before turning his attention back to his target. The teen felt his heart beating fast as he was fighting Dagur, a fight that was one sided with no chance of him being able to win. Part of him doesn't know why he isn't bolting yet figured that it wouldn't matter as there were many Berserkers and Outcasts around who could catch him. Plus, in his state, Dagur could catch him easier, leaving him easy prey…All he could do is see how long he could last, hopefully it would be for a while.
"You want to know something funny Hiccup? I had no idea you were on Berk when we took over the island…yet when my men brought your Night Fury, you wouldn't believe how excited I got," Dagur approached, smirking. "I kept telling myself that I would be able to see your face when I killed your dragon…the look you would give would be remembered for a long time…but now due to circumstances I have to change things up by carving you up!"
He raised his sword and thrust it forward, Hiccup brought his shield forward, blocking the strike, but cried as his arms ached, making him stumble back. This only reminded Hiccup of Dagur's strength and making him realize that blocking will harm him more than dodging, making his options of defense limited. Hiccup tried to get his footing and watch for the next strike, not sure if dodging or blocking is advised. "Think Hiccup, think! You need to come up with something, you're no match for Dagur as he'll barrel through you like a Gronkle."
Dagur smirked as he saw his target walking back, loving the nervous expression adorning his target's face. It didn't matter to him that the dragons were attacking, as long as he got to have this moment with Hiccup. There was so much rage built up within him and he wanted nothing but vengeance for all that the one-legged teen did to him. He has been a bane in his side ever since coming to sign the peace treaty…which of course was a ruse. As long as he could exact some vengeance, he would be satisfied. Besides, part of him was interested in what Hiccup could do after news of his activities came to light but is pretty disappointed so far.
"How much longer can you be on the defensive brother?" Dagur mocked, raising his blade up and inching closer. "You killed my men, so show me how you were able to take them down!"
Hiccup's breath hitched as Dagur thrusted his sword forward, barely giving him a chance to dodge the tip, yet had to duck down as the blade was pulled back as a horizontal slash was delivered next. Hiccup was lucky to dodge those attacks and had to jump to the side as one more slash was delivered. As he rolled to his feet his hand quickly went for his belt but stopped, breathing uneasy at the thought of grabbing his knife. As much as putting on a good offense was preferable, a part of his mind wouldn't let him, he didn't want to risk killing again…even if it's Dagur.
"I…I can't…but I can't keep dodging forever…I…but I can't risk it," He thought to himself as his hand backed away, unfortunately that made him an easy target.
*Klang!*
"Gyah!" Hiccup cried out as another strike was delivered to his shield, unfortunately the force of the blow caused it to fly out of his hand some feet away. Dagur's free hand then balled up into a fist before launching it right into the teen's belly. "OOF!" All the air escaped his body as both hands clutched at the radiating area, his knees buckling as he fell down to them, only for a fist full of his hair to be grabbed and pulled back.
"Why aren't you fighting back?" Dagur glared into Hiccup's eyes, scowling at the lack of offense. His patience being tried as he wanted a better challenge than this. "You killed eight of my men, where is that deadliness you had?!"
"I…I c-can't…" Hiccup breathed deeply, trying to regulate his breathing.
"Pathetic!" Dagur then threw Hiccup back a few feet, watching the teen fall down and roll away. "For once I thought I was going to get a challenge in this fight, but it looks like I am going to be disappointed, like how everyone in your tribe feels about you."
Hiccup's breathing is uneasy on the ground, as pain is flaring up within his body, as this fight is one sided and doesn't seem to have a positive end in sight. Now he's defenseless and being mocked by Dagur, all because he refuses to kill…or in this case try to use his knife. Still, he had to do something, anything to buy him some time. He needed to mount some kind of offense…why else would Gobber teach them hand to hand combat? All he can remember from those lessons is Astrid always beating him…not his fault she's better trained, and stronger, than him. Yet maybe that could come in handy. Looking up, Hiccup saw Dagur coming and stopping mere feet away, raising his sword up in the air. Reacting quickly the teen then kicked his leg with as much force possible, making the metal leg collide with the side of Dagur's knee.
"GYAH!" the Berserker chief cried out as an unexpected pain shot up through his kneecap, causing it to buckle and fall down onto one knee. His sword falling down to the side, but his hand still gripping it. His free hand reached down to clutch the aching limb, leaving him open and unaware of the metal leg connecting with his belly. "OOF!"
Watching Dagur fall back a bit, and clutch at his stomach, Hiccup took the distraction as his cue to look around for his shield. Spotting it some feet away, he quickly moved on his hands and knees, not looking back as he tried to reclaim his only tool of defense. He would try and get to his feet, but that rational part wasn't in control as he hurried as fast as he could. Nearly within in arm's length the teen made a desperate leap, which thankfully allowed him to grab and pull the shield over. Both eyes rose as he could hear grunts and rapid footsteps, surprised that Dagur recovered so fast. Acting on instinct Hiccup turned around and held his shield in front of his body.
*KLANG*
The blade of the sword met with the shield but didn't leave as Dagur is pressing the weapon against the defensive object. Hiccup grunted and tried to push back, but when it came to terms of strength he was on the losing end as his arms were slowly being pushed down. He tried to kick his legs but found they were pinned down, hardly allowing any movement. Both eyes were squinted yet he could see Dagur's teeth gritting, both in pain and glee. He had the upper hand once more and is enjoying their current position. It was only a matter of time before he got pinned down and then…who knows. Hiccup's heartbeat faster, and fear turning into panic as he didn't know what to do, he couldn't escape this. Why wouldn't he have been better? Why didn't he take the chance to use his knife? Could all this have been avoided if he did?
Too late to ask as he cried out as the shield was jostled out of the way, leaving him open. "Gyah!" Hiccup cried out as a strong grip took hold of his throat, pressure being added and slowly cutting off his air way. Dagur smirked as this was it, he had him! "This has been a long-time coming Hiccup…I may have nearly drowned you when we were younger, but this time I'm going to finish the job!" The Berserker chief raised his sword up, the tip aimed right at Hiccup's head as his heart skipped a beat. This was it, he failed.
"ROOOOOAAAAAARRRR!" a piecing cry rang out as a black blur crashed into Dagur, knocking him off and a few yards away unexpectedly.
Hiccup felt the added weight gone, and instantly raised his hands up to rub at his throbbing throat, taken back at this sudden action. Sitting up, both eyes widen at what stood between him and Dagur, both eyes widen in surprise. "T-Toothless!"
Indeed, the Night Fury stood before Hiccup, in a predatory stance, eyes slit open and hissing towards his attacker. Hiccup was in disbelief that his dragon was there, free. How in Thor's name did he manage to do that? Scratch that, he won't question it as Toothless came just in the nick of time….yet the more Hiccup looked, the more he understood as to how his dragon could have escaped. The muzzle was gone, which freed his mouth up, yet locked around his paws are the shackles, but the chains attached were broken, leaving a bit of slack that is singed.
Dagur got back to his feet, thankfully not sustaining any damages but as he saw his attacker both eyes rose in surprise. That surprise turned into a grin as his sword was still in hand and aimed forward, "Oh, you keep surprising me Night Fury…I have no idea how you escaped…but at least now I can prove my prowess by killing you in battle, along with Hiccup!"
"HISSSSSS!" Toothless let out in warning, anger on overdrive and his protectiveness of his rider at an all-time high. "You will not touch him!"
"Sir!" a few Berserkers looked over and saw the situation and rushed over to his side.
"NO!" Dagur shouted out in anger, glaring at them. "I got this; don't you dare interfere!"
"But sir!?" they tried to protest but got interrupted by a Monstrous Nightmare blowing fire at them, causing them all to scatter out of the way.
Dagur turned his eyes forward only to see the black mass lunge but had the reflexes to dodge. Toothless growled as he missed and in turn used his tail like a whip to hit his opponent, but it missed as well. He then turned his head about, spotted Dagur and launched his head forward, teeth coming out as he tried to bite him. The Berserker chief anticipated this and jumped back, responding by swinging his sword about, trying to strike the dragon back as they engaged in their fight.
Hiccup got back to his feet, still massaging his throat, as he saw his dragon fighting Dagur. His breathing came out shallow as he was nearly moments away from death, only for Toothless to save him….again. Why did that bother the teen so much? Of course, he knew the fight was one sided and he was lucky to be saved again…still his dragon is taking on Dagur, but the problem is that the fight could go either way. Who knows if Toothless was fed or not while locked up, that could hamper his strength and movement, plus why would the Berserkers risk feeding him? Despite Toothless being a Night Fury Dagur can be a force to be reckoned with. Remembering back on Dragon Island when he found him, all those dragon bones that the Berserker chief had around his camp showed how capable he was. It was a scary thought thinking that could be his dragon if not careful. Yet, Toothless being a Night Fury could give him a challenge but…who knows if his dragon is at a hundred percent?
A small roar of pain snapped Hiccup out of his thoughts, eyes raised in alarm as Dagur managed to slice at Toothless. The black scales on his front left leg got hit, as red now could be seen. It wasn't that too bad as the dragon could still apply pressure on it but showed that Toothless is a lot slower than normally. But usually, his dragon doesn't sustain injuries this easily, making things all that serious. This made Hiccup worried, he wasn't so sure if Toothless could win this fight and needed to do something.
Dagur on the other hand smiled as he saw the wound he made, holding the sword forward, "Not as fast as usual? I knew not feeding you would be worth it, yet I'm surprised at how much energy you still have."
"I still can rip you apart!" Toothless roared out, ignoring the searing pain. With that his mouth parted open and glowed purple as he unleashed a plasma blast. Eyes widening Dagur dodged the incoming bolt, it collided with the ground and scorched it. The Berserker chief saw another being fired and had just enough time to dodge before it hit him,
"Looks like I'm faster!" Dagur mocked as he took more swings of his sword, putting the Night Fury on the defensive.
"I need to help him," Hiccup said as he finally removed his hand from his throat, full knowing that Toothless can't do this on his own. Yet, the only way for him to help his dragon was to use the one item he was avoiding. His gut wrenched when just thinking about it but knew that without it Toothless could get hurt or even worse…and it would be his fault for hesitating like this. He can't let that happen…he needs to help him. Just like before, when he made his first kill, it was all because he was trying to protect his dragon. If they can take Dagur out then it means Berk will win…no one will be there to lead the Outcasts and Berserkers, meaning they will be in disarray.
His trembly hand went for his belt, stopping for a moment as he were mere inches away from the hilt of his weapon. Part of him wanted to pull away and forget about it, yet as he watched Toothless fighting, he knew he had to put those feelings aside and help…even if it meant killing again, which he was against. The trembling stopped as his hand enclosed around the hilt and pulled out his dagger. The stained blade now being able to be seen as the teen is now armed again.
Meanwhile Dagur was having fun with fighting the Night Fury, finding that despite being deprived of food, that it's still a formidable opponent. It only made him gleeful for the fact that killing it would be all that more delightful. Usually by now he would have the upper hand against any dragon he fought, but like usual the Night Fury is proving to be unlike any other dragon he encounter. Those teeth and tail are the main threats he had to watch out for, but without flight it should make things even for him.
Jumping back to dodge an incoming bite Dagur pulled his blade back and launched it forward, only for the dragon to dodge it. The Berserker chief smirked as he then charged forward preparing for another strike yet heard something whirling towards him. He stopped and turned, but barely had time to bring his sword up, only to block a shield that had been launched at him. Bouncing off the weapon, Toothless' eyes caught sight of it, and on instinct knew what to do. He jumped up and snagged it out of the air and tossed it with his mouth in one direction, watching it sailing through the air and caught by a hand. Hiccup held the shield up with a look of determination on his face as he locked eyes with Dagur.
The Berserker chief saw Hiccup standing with the shield in hand…along with the dagger, the teen's stance was one that is ready to fight. Toothless saw this as well and flocked over to his side, standing alongside with him. Dagur was confused but then smirked as he finally saw that Hiccup was ready to fight back, elating him more than before, "Finally…this is what I have been waiting for!"
Hiccup ignored the comment, the grip on his knife tightened as he kept his eyes forward, "You and me bud…lets finish this."
"Together," Toothless nodded, having his rider's back.
Things were tense between them, as they stood in place, waiting for one another to make the first move. Toothless took the initiative, moving a couple of steps forwards, growling in warning while flashing his sharp teeth before taking a huge leap. Dagur side stepped away and tried to take a stab at the dragon, but the tail acted like a whip and managed to parry the blow without harm. Using that as a distraction Hiccup charged forward, shield held out and acting like a battering ram. Dagur took notice but barely had time to hold up his left arm to block, but the force of the impact caused him to stumble back a couple of steps. He responded by thrusting his sword forward, colliding with the shield and expelling a grunt from the impact.
He was about to strike again only for him to dive to the side, nearly avoiding incoming dragon teeth that caught nothing but air. Toothless growled at this and pounced towards the Berserker chief, now trying to slash him with his claws, only for them to lock with the flat end of Dagur's sword. Dragon and man locked eyes as each one held hatred for the other. Sadly, Dagur was fresher out of the two of them, so he was able to remove one hand and ball it into a fist before slamming it into the side off the black scales. Toothless yelped as he was knocked back, before being shoulder rushed hard, knocking him back some more. Some distance being put between them the Berserker chief managed to see Hiccup charging, shield pulled back before he swung it, yet missed as his target ducked. Dagur ended up balling his free hand up before launching it right into the teen's gut once more.
"GASP!" Hiccup cried out in pain as the air was robbed of him once more. The fist remaining in place as it supported him.
"You two are proving to be a challenge, something I have been waiting for," Dagur smirked as he could feel the adrenaline flowing through him. He was practically shaking from battle high he was getting.
Hiccup shakingly looked back up at Dagur, body in pain, but his own adrenaline coursing through him and working at blocking most of it. . A smirk then appeared on his face as he spoke, "T-This…ends…now!" With that Hiccup brought his knife up for an upper slash, the blade making contact with the unprotective part of his arm.
"Aargh!" Dagur cried out in slight pain, stumbling back as blood was drawn. He didn't have time to nurse the wound as he looked and saw the Night Fury firing a plasma blast right at his feet, causing him to jump back. The impact force of the bolt hitting the ground and making him to stumble back more.
Hiccup saw this and knew an opening was made, so trying to push the pain to the back of his mind he charged forward, before dropping to his knees, sliding across the grass. As the distance closed the teen pulled his hand back before making a slash right at Dagur's leg. Another cry of pain escaped him as his knee nearly buckled but still stood. It was then Toothless charged in, mouth opening and clamping around the blade of the sword, catching the Berserker off guard as the weapon was wrestled out of his grip with ease. Once he was disarmed the Night Fury tossed the sword away, leaving Dagur defenseless. Hiccup, still on his knees next to his opponent planted both hands on the ground before extending his left leg out. With a huge grunt and using all his strength he brough his prosthetic back for a leg sweep.
"Aargh!" Both of them cried out. Dagur from being caught unexpectedly and Hiccup in pain as his stump flared up from the action.
Still the action had the desired effect as Dagur fell back, hitting the ground unexpectedly as the air was knocked out of him. Momentarily stunned, this allowed Toothless enough time to pounce, slamming a paw down right on his chest plate. The Berserker cried out in a silent gasp as it felt like a boulder slammed down on his chest, momentarily closing his air ways. This allowed Toothless to pin the rest of Dagur's body down, to not allow him back up or any leverage. After a moment he did tried to struggle but stopped as cold metal touched his neck. Opening his eyes, they only widened as Hiccup was now by his side, knife pressed against his skin. Just one wrong move or movement, and the blade could end him easily.
Little did they know is that the fellow Berserkers and Outcasts noticed this, and everything stopped, all the fighting and carnage ended as they turned to the sight of their leader disarmed and pinned down. Surprisingly the Dragons seemed to sense this change in the wind and stopped their assault as well. Most hovering in the air or landing on the nearby buildings, as a pregnant silence filled the air as many didn't know how to react. Their leader was down, and most of all Berk's heir and dragon had him down, completely at their mercy.
After the shock wore off Dagur smiled up at Hiccup, completely blindsided at this turn of events but for some reason a feeling of excitement over came him. Never in his life had he thought he could be defeated in a fight like this, but here he was, on the ground with a blade pressed against his neck, just mere seconds away from death. A fascinated chuckle escaped his mouth followed by a grin, "Unexpected Hiccup…I commend you."
"It's over…" Hiccup responded in a low voice, fighting back a tremble that threatened to break out through his body. No, he can't do this, he can't show fear or nervousness…he's a Viking and he has his enemy pinned. Both eyes narrowed as he took another deep breath, "It's Over!" Toothless hissed alongside his rider, making the situation cement itself.
"Yes…it is…now do it," Dagur smiled, prepared for the next step. After knowing Hiccup for years, it surprised him big time to know he could kill now…He never thought it would happen but here it is, and knowing how it's Viking custom he was ready to accept his fate, as it all would come to an end. "Do it…kill me, send me to Valhalla…it is your right as the victor."
Both of Hiccup's eyes widen upon hearing that, but then he realized the position he's in. Toothless pinning him down, his knife pressed into his neck…all it took is one clean slice and Dagur would bleed out…ending his life for good. One of Berk's biggest threats would be done with, that would be the end of him. He himself would have made Berk a lot safer, and this nightmare would be over with right afterwards…no more running, no more having to be scared…no more killing…killing…just thinking about that word made him mentally shudder and nearly gag. No, he can't do this, he can't kill, not again after he told the others about how he can't kill again. Doing it once more…that could end up destroying him.
"I…I can't do it…I can't add another death to the faces that I see. What makes this worse is that I know Dagur, and despite what he has done…seeing him would be worse than a strange," Hiccup thought to himself, conflicted at having the Berserker at his mercy. "Still…Dagur is a huge threat to Berk…I can't allow him to leave, especially if he tries this again…yet we would be better prepared this time around…no, no, I can end a huge problem for Berk right here right now…but can I?" So many conflicting emotions swelled up within Hiccup, not sure what to do right now, or what could be right.
"Hiccup!" a new voice called out, causing the teen to slightly turn his head, still keeping an eye on Dagur. Out of his peripheral vision both eyes widen upon seeing his dad, along with the other villagers. His friends landing their dragons, as they looked on in surprise at the scene before them. They fought off most of the forces that came their way, managing to fight their way up to Hiccup's location, yet at the final push they found it surprisingly easy…the reason quite clear before them.
"Oh no, dad's here," Hiccup said in worry. Part of him relieved yet…the other part horrified. He could already feel tears beginning to moisten his eyes upon seeing his father, safe and sound as his friends managed to keep him alive. Just the mere sight is of him is making it hard keeping himself together. Part of him wanted to run into the man's arms, hug him and just bawl his eyes out…but he can't, not while Dagur is pinned down. Yet now his dad, friends and some of Berk's Vikings now can see him, deciding Dagur's fate. They could see him either kill him…or not, basically seeing a major choice made by their heir…one of which could shape their views on him…making the situation that much worse for him.
"Looks like we have an audience…at least now you have witnesses to my death," Dagur egged on, for some reason finding a lot of glee in this despite knowing that his life is about to come to an end. He never expected to be bested in battle, let alone by Hiccup but now he was going to receive a glorious death after a hard-fought battle…well that is what it seemed like. Looking up at Hiccup's eyes and was confused as he saw hesitation. What could he be hesitant at? "Do it…you know you want to!"
"Hiccup…" Stoick said softly, hearing what was said, but he refrained to move. Everyone else didn't see their chief move either and followed and did the same, still looking at their heir as he seemed to be mulling over his decision. The chief knew very well what is going on in his boy's mind and wanted nothing more than to go over and take over. This is something his son shouldn't be doing, especially in his current state of mind, but…he didn't do it. He knew his son was having conflicted feelings especially from the last talk they had and how he admitted to killing. How he wanted to take this burden away from him but…he can't interfere. From what he can tell Hiccup was the victor in a fight they must have had…meaning Dagur's fate laid within his son's hands, and he needed to allow the boy to make that decision…standing by what he did. Being heir meant that this decision would weigh heavily but also must not be interfered with…besides something told him that Hiccup had to make this choice and wouldn't let anyone else do it. Whatever choice his son made; it would need to be respected.
Toothless looked at his rider, confused as to why he isn't responding, but in all honesty he knew why. Apparently needing to make a choice on whether this human he has pinned should die or not. That's a choice that was a no brainer to the Night Fury…but to his human it was a huge deal. Seeing movement out of the corner of his eye, caused him to swiftly turn to Dagur and hissed, stopping his actions. His green eyes locked onto the down human, seeing a confused expression on his face. He must be seeing that something is wrong, or Hiccup hesitating. This needed to end now, the Dragon knew what had to be done and decided he should make the choice.
Hiccup's head raised as he turned and saw his dragon inhaling as a purple glow started up. Immediately he moved a free hand up, in the middle of the line of fire, "No…don't." That caused Toothless to stop. "It's my decision…I'll do it…not you."
"I…understand," Toothless said, slowly understanding and stopped his attacker, as his rider is taking responsibility and doesn't want him to interfere. This was mostly true on Hiccup's part, mainly if his dragon kills Dagur it would still be an extension of himself, as he and Toothless are connected so in a way it would still be him doing it.
"What do I do? Take out Dagur, kill him and end things between Berk and the Berserkers for good…or let him go, and risk him coming back?" Hiccup thought to himself, still conflicted. "I can't kill again...i'm feeling sick nearly just thinking about it…who knows what it'll do if I went through with it? I was so close to giving up and handing myself over…that was until my friends interfered. Yet now? I could end up a shell of myself…destroyed and barely functional. Yet, Dagur has been a huge problem to Berk and everyone within it, the villagers and Dragons alike. Take him out now…and that will be done with…Berk will be a lot safer without him darkening our village, and thus Toothless will be safe from him. Everyone deserves that peace of mind. But is it worth what I'll lose in the end?"
Two good arguments playing in his mind, each one having their pros and cons to it…ones that'll be positive for himself and the village, and vice versa for the cons. Should he kill Dagur, and possible risk the last of his sanity just to make the villager safer? Or should he spare him, leaving his mind intact but allowing a risk of him coming back? His choice being watched by everyone, and they would judge him, would it be for the best…or for the worst. The teen has already been through a lot during this whole entire siege and wasn't sure which was the best. Either way a decision needed to be made…one of which he hoped was for the best.
"Odin…please forgive for what comes from this decision," Hiccup thought to himself, knowing full well what he had to do, and feeling bad for it…mainly as it would be a first for himself.
"Tell your men to retreat," Hiccup then said.
"What?" Dagur's eyes raised in confusion.
"Tell your men…all of them to retreat…leave here you too…" Hiccup spoke up in as much of a firm tone he could muster up, everyone present able to hear, all of them taken aback as well. All of them were silent and not speaking up and could only watch as it continued on. "Leave here…and don't ever come back…"
Both of the Berserker chief's eyes narrowed at the order, not able to fathom what he was being told. He had been ready for death, only to be told to leave, being spared and allowed to live. He doesn't know whether to consider this a blessing from Odin or an insult. Still, despite this angering him he didn't dare move at all, "You're making a big mistake Hiccup."
"No…I'm not…if you ever think about coming back here and trying something like this again…I won't be as merciful," the teen responded with conviction, digging the blade into the throat some more, causing Dagur's breathing to hitch.
"What's to stop me from attacking once I'm up?" Dagur then smirked.
"Look around and tell me you can win," Hiccup said, which prompted everyone to take a peek around themselves. Most of Berk's Vikings were around, still able to fight, that and the dragons were perched around, eyes locked onto their enemies and ready to resume the fight if necessary. By the looks of it, if the fight resumed the Berserkers and Outcasts wouldn't be able to win at all, meaning continuing would be a losing battle. Dagur realized this and knew that taking the offer would be wise…despite being offended at it.
"You're going to regret this one day," He seethed, hating for the fact that he was actually going to do what was told.
"It's over Dagur…Tell your men now!" Hiccup responded with force.
The Berserker growled in irritation, silence filling the area as the two teens locked eyes with one another, as the tension could be cut with a dagger. With half fury and humiliation Dagur spoke while not taking his eyes off of Hiccup, "Do as he says….we're leaving!"
Many of his men raised their eyes and gasped upon hearing that order, all in disbelief that their leader was conceding to the demand. Yet, as they looked around, they knew it would be best as they could get attacked once more and a lot of them could die as a result. So, part of them were alright with the fact that they were being allowed to live. All the other Berkians were surprised as well at what their heir was saying, all of them in disbelief he was letting one of their enemies go…yet they knew Hiccup's character, which allowed them to understand his reasonings. Stoick and the Riders knew how deep this went, which made them realize the true meaning behind it this one choice.
Either way the order was headed as one by one the Berserkers and Outcasts sheathed their weapons, eyeing their surroundings wearily before starting their walk, all of them now intending to leave. The dragons and Berkians keeping an eye on them, not trusting that they won't do anything in the meantime. Stoick and the Riders then looked back at Hiccup, who still had Dagur down on the ground. After a while, as the others cleared out it was then the teen pulled back, removing the knife from the skin. Standing up he motioned for Toothless to do the same, which the Night Fury reluctantly obeyed but kept his eyes on the downed enemy.
Dagur rubbed at his throat once the blade left his skin, clicking his tongue as he could feel a small nick from the edge. He put that behind his mind as he stood up, keeping his eyes locked on with Hiccup, feeling humiliated at what he's doing, as his pride had taken a huge blow from conceding. Still, he would take the offer of being allowed to live…for now. He took a few uneasy steps away, part of him wanting to go and pick up his sword, but had to choose against that, as it would have been seen as aggression. It would have to be left behind. He took one last look at Hiccup, blade and shield in hand with the Night Fury right next to him, the dragon poised and ready to attack at a moment's notice.
"I can guarantee that one day, you'll wish you had killed me," Dagur responded in a calm, normal, tone. It wasn't a threat, more like a promise towards his brother.
"If that day comes, I'll bare responsibility for it…" Hiccup said simply, not wanting to deal with this anymore. "Now get out of here, and never come back."
Nothing else was said as Dagur finally broke eye contact, now looking at the villagers as he moved, ready to respond if they stopped him. This was Hiccup's choice to let them go and he expected them to respect that, which he was surprised at.
"Make sure they don't do anything," Stoick said to the villagers near him, handing that responsibility over as they watched Dagur walk by. Turning his head, he looked over at his son, who is still standing in place, trying to hold up a composed demeaner…yet to the chief's knowledge he could see that all was a front. He was right as once the Berserker chief was out of sight, his son then fell down to his knees, knife and shield dropping to the ground as his head bowed down.
It was over…it's all over with.
The chief went over to his son's side, kneeling down next to him as his hand reached out but refrained from touching the boy for some reason, "Son?"
Hiccup's body tightened as he heard someone come up to his side, fully knowing who it was as the voice only cemented it. The whole situation cemented itself for him as he finally realized what he had done. For the first time in…ever he made a decision that benefited no one…he didn't take the feelings of the villagers in consideration, nor their future safety. In the end he selfishly thought of only his own wellbeing. An action that will forever haunt him, as the consequences could be dire.
A small coo was heard as Toothless nuzzled him, seeing him in distress, "I stand by what you did."
A large hand was then placed on his shoulder, making his body stiffen yet he kept his gaze on the ground. The teen's body started to tremble as he could now let all those repressed feelings come out, but the repercussions of his choice still weighing heavily on him. "Son…are you ok?
"D-Did I make the right decision?" he asked, the first thing he said to his father ever since seeing him last, was another selfish thing. The question itself took Stoick aback, silent as the question processed through his mind. To be honest, that was a hard thing to answer. If it had been him making the choice, he would have killed Dagur, but it wasn't. His son had his reasons, yet the answer to that question might not be as simple as he hoped. He figured it was best to try and take his mind off of it.
"It's over son…it's all over, you did it," Stoick said in a calm and kind tone, knowing a gentle hand was needed. All Hiccup could do is nod, an automatic body response as he wanted all this to be over with and it was. Berk was saved, the villagers and dragons were alright, and the enemy had been driven away. He helped reclaim their home and drove off the enemy…yet…
Was it truly over?
A/N: Hope you like, such a roller coaster ride eh? Anyway I hope the battle with Dagur and Hiccup was good, as I can tell many were waiting for it. Also I felt it would be a good touch having Hiccup fight along with Toothless, as it only added to things. Also I hope you all see what i'm doing with Hiccup letting Dagur go, it was my one of my choices when making this story initially. I just hope it was good in your eyes. Still there is plenty more to come as there is still the aftermath of the fight as Berk is free and Hiccup has to deal with the after effects of everything he went through. Still, I thank you all for waiting as I appreciate it. Till next time.
