Chapter 5: Funhouse Frazzle (Part 1- Fairground Fun)
(Coyler's Note: Y'know it's been a good year or two since I first started writing fanfics,so for this Coyler's Note segment I thought I'd give a bit of exposition about myself...Yoshikage Kira style! "My name is Caelen Coyle,I'm 16 years old. My home is in the part of County Meath,Ireland, where nothing seems to ever happen...and I am lonely as fuck. Makes sense considering I spend my days writing fanfictions. I work as an employee on my Granddad's fishing trawler for three to four different months out of the year and get to clock off at around 10pm at the latest. I don't smoke, but being Irish I do enjoy the occasional drink. I'm in bed by 12pm and make it sure I get at least 12 hours of sleep each night,no matter what. After having a cold glass of apple/blackcurrant juice with water and doing about five minutes of laps in circles around my room before going to bed,I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there was no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although,if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone...unless they were to bring a gun or something". And that my friends,is the basic life of TheCoyler. Coyler, out!)

Three days. It has been three whole days since the Fourth Class Trial, the murder of Scott and the execution of Amy. While Jabberwock Island had been in an eternal summer for the last few weeks,a gaggle of storm clouds had been gathering. Claps of thunder could be heard in the sky above as a cold breeze whipped around. It was one of the few times the students wished their cabins had proper windows that didn't allow the breeze to get in. It was another dark, gray morning as Topher awoke. He was feeling groggy. It was now around a month and a half, maybe even two months since this nightmare had begun. Two long, agonising months of friendship,a single romance he wasn't involved in,confusing mysteries and gut wrenching murder plots. All he really wanted now was to just pack it in and go home, like what Amy desired. However he knew that he had to continue on and survive,if not for his own life, but to avenge the lives of all those that had been lost during this wretched killing game. "Oh God,this shit really is killing me mentally" he yawned. Looking at the clock he noticed it was 8am. He stretched his arms and cracked his fingers, "Okay,I should probably head to the restaurant" he said to himself. Leaving his cabin,he shivered as the icy wind whipped across his body and through his hair. Tucking his hands underneath his armpits to keep them away from the cold,he lightly sprinted to the restaurant where he would meet the others.
He was quite surprised to find that only Harold was awake. Well,he wasn't exactly awake but was present in the room, asleep on his usual chair in the corner with a manga over his face. On his table was an empty plate of food that he had eaten (presumably toast) and an empty cup of tea on a Game of Thrones coaster. Topher walked over and pulled up a chair to sit at the table after he had gotten a plate of some hot bacon and steaming coffee. "If this doesn't warm me up,nothing will" he muttered to himself. As he began to eat,he attempted to wake up Harold By nudging him under the table. "Huh,he's really out for the count" he mused. He picked up a plate anf flung it at Harold's skull, "Wake up!". The plate ricocheted off the nerds head and flew out the window into the sea. Topher face palmed and continued to kick him under the table until eventually the chair lurched back, sending Harold crashing to the floor. He awoke with a startle, his body instinctively forming a cat-stance. He reached into the back of his trousers and pulled out a pair of nunchucks which he swung around violentely, "GAH! WHO GOES THERE?!" he screamed, his eyes shut tight. He then took a giant swing, letting go and grabbing the chain in the middle. However holding the chain caused the heavy weights to clack together and smash into Harold's nose and crotch, which brought him down again.
Topher laughed and shook his head, but helped him up. "Sorry about that, you alright?" he asked. "Obviously not,I hit myself with weights in the Mommy/Daddy Button" Harold sighed. They sat back down at the table. "How long have you been here?" Topher asked, drinking his coffee. "Not too long, only about half an hour or so before you came in" said Harold, "I got woken up when the wind blew water from the moat around my cottage into the room. It got all over me and woke me up,so after having a hot shower I realised I probably wouldn't fall back asleep here. I decided to get some breakfast and catch up on my reading when I fell asleep, maybe I got too comfortable" he explained. "The weather has been a real pain" agreed Topher, "The cold had me up,though I honestly figured everyone else wouldn't have been sleeping in and came here for breakfast like usual". Harold nodded, "It is quite weird that nobody else was here, not even Brick who's normally up at 7am on the dot". "Do you think something might've happened? Like maybe the Despair Disease is back?" Topher asked. Harold shook his head, "Doubt it. My guess is that the perhaps the others are either asleep in their cabins or went to find somewhere warmer to stay. As for the Despair Disease,I have a hard time imagining Monokuma would reuse the same motive twice" he rasped. "What makes you so sure?" Topher mused. "Well it's obvious that this game is being overviewed by someone, maybe even an entire viewing party" he began, "It would explain why there's so many cameras and rules. If Monokuma were to just use the same motive over and over it would probably take away the suspense for whoever is keeping us captive here" he explained, "I mean, think about it: None of the deaths probably wouldn't have happened if we just used one motive. Ezekiel killed because he wanted to find out what happened to his parents,Duncan killed to keep his secret hidden,Shawn wanted to get his bunker and Amy was tired of the whole thing and just wanted to go home. Realistically they might not have crumbled and killed given the same lame disease that most likely would've just killed us all eventually anyway" he explained, pushing up his glasses.
Topher rubbed his chin, "Wow,I never thought of it like that. Like...seriously,that's some serious jumbo brain thinking right there". Harold grinned, "Aw y'know,I just had to put the pieces together. Wasn't all that hard when I thought about it with some logic". Just then the boys were surprised at someone who entered the room. Monokuma trudged over panting and wheezing, clambering onto a chair. Topher raised an eyebrow, "Monokuma? What are you doing here?". "I'm *cough* here to *wheeze* complain about *splutter* you breaking *choke* a rule!" Monokuma spluttered. "A broken rule?" said Topher. Monokuma nodded, but before speaking held up his hand to show he needed to catch his breath that he didn't need. "Alright alright,I can talk now" Monokuma finally said, "Now! I was able to witness some very interesting footage of YOU littering Topher!" he exclaimed. "Wha? Littering? Aw crap,do you mean the plate that went out the window? C'mon man,it was an accident" Topher protested. Monokuma tutted, "Too bad,so sad! You know the rules! Break one and iiiiiiiiiiiit's PUNISHMENT TIME!". "Oh shit, someone's getting killed again?" came a voice. The three turned to look at the door and saw Bridgette standing in the doorway wearing a wetsuit and soaked from head to toe. Monokuma laughed, "Indeed indeed! Mr Wilson has committed the heinous crime of littering a plate, which means he deserves to get a special dose of pain!". Bridgette was confused, "Plate? Oh! You mean this?". She pulled out a scratched and soggy plate from inside the towel on her head, "I got smacked right on my melon while finishing up some surfing. At first I thought God was tryna tell me that he wanted me to cook in the kitchen like some prairie wife" she chuckled. Monokuma's left eye flashed red as he stomped his feet on the chair, "Aw man! And here I was thinking I'd get to have some fun, what a let-down!". He jumped off his chair. "Welp, guess that's it for me. Time to exit the scene!". He quickly waddled away, but stopped by the door next to Bridgette. "By the way,I just remembered something! The Fourth Island has been open for some time now, just so you know! I'd toooootally recommend going on a nice, peaceful strole to give a look". With that,he left the building and returned to wherever it was he went to when not needed.
"That was kinda weird" Bridgette mused as she sat down next to Harold and Topher. "Yo Bridgette, did you seriously go surfing in those winds?" asked Harold. "Heck yes I did!" Bridgette said proudly, "High winds are the best for catching some waves! They went so high up that I nearly gave myself vertigo,it was totally tubular!". "Never real done surfing before" said Topher, "I'm not the best at balancing". Bridgette sat closer to him and beamed, "I can teach you!" she exclaimed, "It'll be such fun! It looks hard n' stuff, but once you get into the vibes it all comes naturally,no joke!". Topher laughed, "I'll take your word for it. Maybe when the weather dies down you can show me". "I'll get in on that action too" added Harold. Bridgette fist pumped the air, "Nice, soon I'll have a whole surfers gang! Wonder what I should call us? 'The Aqua Necklaces' has a cool ring to it,right?" she asked excitedly. Harold folded his arms and nodded, "Definitely an awesome name". Bridgette looked excited, "Ooh I can't wait to start!". A loud clap of thunder was heard from outside as it lit up the sky. "From the looks of things,we probably won't be doing any surfing any time soon" Topher sighed. "Don't worry, the Surfing Queen will make sure her buddies can catch a gnarly riptide" Bridgette smiled, tilting her head. "Just had a thought, but maybe we should go check out the new island?" Harold eventually asked. Topher and Bridgette glanced at each other. "You think that's a good idea?" Bridgette asked. "Kinda. We might find something useful,y'know?" said Harold. "I guess it wouldn't hurt to check it out,not like we were gonna do anything else today" agreed Topher, "Although before we go,we should wake the others first so they can eat up and join us. Would be dumb to spend the day walking around all day on an empty stomach". "Very true" said Bridgette, "I know I'd be down for more grub. Though I should probably be careful,if I eat too much I'll float less a Michael Felps and more like an artic blue whale" she chuckled, slapping her stomach. "Must be easy to not overeat when vegan" said Topher. "You'd think that, but it doesn't really work for me. I may be vegan but still enjoy the occassional sweet treat every now and then" she explained, "Only problem is that I could spend months toning up,only to drink a chocolate shake and have my ass jiggle for weeks" she laughed, rubbing her rear. "Guess metabolism is a real pain sometimes" said Harold. "Amen to that dude" chuckled Bridgette. The three went to wake up the others and load up before heading out, while the storm began to set in.
Huge showers of rain were drenching the island as everyone ran for the Fourth Island, swearing under the breaths, complaining and covering their hair as the swiftly moved through the rushing raindrops. Harold and Scarlett were especially annoyed as the rain was not only steaming up and covering their glasses but falling in between them to splash into their eyes. They were essentially running blind for a while, with Harold nearly running off the bridge into the harsh sea. Luckily he was grabbed by Lighting, who put him on his back while Brick carried Scarlett in case she had a similar mishap. As they ran across the bridge, some buildings came into view in the stormy darkness. "What do you think will be on this island?" asked Ella. Alejandro tapped his chin, "I can't say for sure. By the look of the silhouettes I can only imagine that it could be a modern industrial area?". "If that's the case,it'll certainly come in handy to escape" said Bridgette. "You sure that's a good thing? I mean, you remember what happened to Izzy, right?" replied Topher, "She broke the rules tryna escape a few times and got spiked up like a kebab". Brick agreed, "He poses a fair point. We might be safer to perhaps try and call for help rather than just trying to ditch the islands. Who knows what could happen if we were to be found out, chances are we'd all end up dead". "Sounds like a good idea" said Topher. "Man,I know I'd love to get home right now,but Brick is right. It would best to just wait for help than potentially all getting executed" Topher thought to himself.
Topher monologue: We trudged on through the spitting rain until we were over the bridge. The Fourth Island was...different,to say the least. While we expected a big office complex we were greeted with a giant amusement park. There weren't many useful things this time around. There was a giant castle that we weren't able to enter,a churro stand, what looked to be some sort of train tunnel ride and a huge roller coaster. As said, not really anything useful. The churros are nice I guess, but I don't really think they'll be a good way to help defend ourselves or get help. After searching around,we all met at the churro stand.
The group were all inside the churro stand, happy to finally be away from the rain. It was quite spacious and packed with warm churros,so everyone was able heat up. "Y'know" said Lindsay, "This island really feels like Monokuma is trying to be more nicer". "Think so?" Lightning asked, covering his food with protein powder. "Yuhuh" Lindsay nodded, "Last time we got sick on a crummy desert, but this time we got a fun theme park! I wanna go on the roller coaster!" she squealed. Scarlett became nervous hearing the idea. "A-are you sure that's a good idea?". Brick titled his unibrow, "What's wrong with roller coasters? Those things are pretty fun". "Maybe for some people, but not for me" Scarlett replied. Lindsay crouched down next to Scarlett so that she was looking up at her. "Pleeeeeeeeeeeease can we all go on the roller coaster" she asked, making her pupils larger. Scarlett bit her lip, "I'm not sure". "Puhleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!" Lindsay begged, "I promise if you don't like it you won't have to ride it again". Heather laughed, "Might sound crazy, but it could be fun. Sure it's rainy, but my hair is already ruined so I couldn't care less". "How about we take a vote?" Alejandro asked, "All those in favour say I". Everyone all said "I" at the exact time, except for Scarlett who begrudingly agreed. Lindsay clapped her hands in excitement, "Oh yay! This is going to be so much fun!". Scarlett raised a hand, "Just one question. Who will sit where?". There was brief silence. "Dibs on the front!" Lightning called before vaulting over the stands serving counter. "Aw what? No way!" Bridgette yelled, trying to follow but falling onto one of the tables. "You can't just call dibs on a chair!" Harold rasped, chasing Lightning. "Well I just sha-did!" Lightning retorted in the distance.
Once on the roller coaster, everyone but Scarlett was enjoying the slow ascent. Topher was sitting in the back next to her, since the others had all gotten the best seats. He glanced to his left and noticed Scarlett had her eyes tightly shut, leaning down and clamping her hands onto the safety bar. She was gently rocking back and forth muttering something to herself. "You alright Scarlett?" he asked. "I'm fine,I'm fine,I'm in my happy place" she quickly replied. "Not a fan of roller coasters, huh?" he asked again. She nervously shook her head, "Fan would be an understatement. I HATE these things, always have and always will". "Did you have a traumatic experience or something? From what I hear that's normally what makes people afraid of this kinda stuff" added Topher. "When I was a little kid,I got into this awful wreck at a travelling carnival" Scarlett explained, "I was beaten up really baddly, which caused me to develop my fear. It's why I don't like this stuff". Topher folded his arms and leaned back. The clanking from the chains could still be heard underneath them. "Oh Jesus, how tall is this thing?!" she cried. "Pretty tall" said Topher as he looked over the edge, "We're talking above basic safety regulations of tallness". Scarlett's face went pale, "W-what?!". Topher chuckled, "Only joking, just kidding". Scarlett snuck a look on her left and realised how high they were. She yelped and pushed herself closer to the middle of the cart, nudging into Topher. He noticed that they were reaching the top. "Hey,we're about to hit the drop. Might sound dumb, but do you wanna hold my hand or something?" he smiled, extending his hand. Scarlett didn't reply, but wrapped her arms around his right arm, pushed herself close and held on tight. "WOO YEAH! LESSSSSSGO!" Bridgette and Lightning cheered from the front seat. The coaster reached it's peak, stalled at the stop and flung itself down the slope. Bridgette,Lightning,Harold,Lindsay,Brick and Topher cheered and threw up their arms. Ella,Scarlett and Heather held on tight and yelled, while Alejandro screamed like a girl.
After a few minutes they had reached the bottom. Everyone stumbled off, those who enjoyed it talked about how cool it was. Those who didn't find it fun however went to puke while Alejandro went to grab a drink to sooth his hoarse throat. "Hmm,no one's around. Maybe I'll sneak a few of these" Alejandro said to himself as he passed the churro stand. He wrapped a handful in some tissue and gently put them into a pocket on the inside of his shirt for safe keeping. As he returned to the roller coaster to meet the others,he noticed those who enjoyed it weren't there. "I say, where have they gotten off to?" he asked. "They all wanted another go" said Heather, pointing her nail file upwards. A screeching and gaggle of voices could be heard as the carts pulled back into the ministation. "One more time! One more time!" the riders chanted. Scarlett rolled her eyes, "You seriously want to go again?". "We shall sha-go until only one of us remains!" Lightning declared. "One more time! One more time!" they kept chanting. Scarlett shook her head, "You know what? No. If I do you're just gonna keep going round and round till you get sick, then I'll have to clean it up and serve as maid until you get better". Harold scoffed, "Bullshit, just start it up already,GOSH!". "Yeah c'mon!" Bridgette yelled, "You're a dick! You're a dick!" she began chanting,to which she was quickly joined by others with the guys banging their fists on the safety bars. All that could be heard was Scarlett starting to shout with the riders chanting "You're a dick! You're a dick!". "AHHHHH THE PRESSURE!" Scarlett yelled as she pulled the level, sending the cart into motion. "Man those guys are so annoying!" Scarlett grumbled as she walked away. "I never expected Topher and Brick to get so riled up" added Ella. "Probably just hiding being potential idiots over uptight outfits and really good cocktails" said Heather. Alejandro folded his arms, "Ah leave them be. They're just lads wanting a bit of fun to lighten their spirits. Nothing wrong with some comradery every now and then".
"Comradery indeed" said Brick, who rubbed his mouth as he walked out of the entrance with Bridgette. "What happened to you two?" asked Heather. Both Brick and Bridgette were covered in puke,Brick on his body and face and Bridgette down the front of her hoodie. Brick smacked Bridgette upside the head, "Things were going wonderfully when this dingus thought it would be funny to puke upwards and ruin my clothes". "I'm so sorry Brick,I didn't mean to!" Bridgette protested, "I think it was something I ate". Brick scoffed and used a tissue Ella handed him to remove the vomit from his face. Meanwhile on the coaster, the remaining students were on their fifth lap. "Quick question!" Topher asked as the climbed again, "What do you get if you get off last?". "Sha-bragging rights man!" said Lightning, "And believe me,those sha-rights will go to me!". "Woah,I've never tried to win just for fun before" said Lindsay. "It isn't really anything special" said Harold, who was sitting next to her, "If I've played Mario Kart with broke college friends enough it's that being able to unironically brag is truly one of the greatest highs". Time continued to pass as the rain worsened. Topher,Lightning,Lindsay and Harold continued to ride the coaster all day while the others sulked in the station. "How long have they been on this thing?" Ella asked. Brick checked his watch, "Only three hours". "Oh. That's not so bad" Ella muttered. "It is bad! It's horrible! Boring! A pain to wait through!" came a voice. Alejandro,Brick,Ella,Scarlett,Heather and Bridgette looked towards the entrance and saw Monokuma with an annoyed expression on his face. "I've been waiting near four dam hours to give you guys your new motive! At first I thought you all dropped dead at once for maximum despair, but then I waddle all the way here to find out you kiddos have been ALLLLL this fun without ME!" Monokuma exclaimed. "Believe me sir, this really isn't anything fun in the slightest" said Brick, "Unless you enjoy being puked on from head to toe" he snapped, shooting a look at Bridgette. "Puke? GROSS! Y'know I once knew a guy who puked up blood at a lot. He was some goofy guy who loved trust and friendship, ended up dead when he coughed up blood in a space shuttle accident. Terribly sad and annoying" Monokuma explained, "Anywho, let's get back to my reason for coming - your NEW motive!".
The six students in the station all groaned. "Seriously? You've got another way to make us kill each other?" Heather sulked, "Can't you just leave us alone for once?". Monokuma shook his head, "Leave you alone? Never! How do you expect me to sit around doing nothing when there's murdering and trials to be had?". "Knew that would be his response" Scarlett whispered to Bridgette. Monokuma rubbed his paws together, "Alrigthy, where did the other four get off to?". "Up there on the coaster" said Brick, pointing upwards. "I imagine they won't be down for a long time" said Ella, "They said they wanna keep going until one is left". "Too bad,so sad! Get them here right now or I'll be playing a game of slice and dice" Monokuma ordered as he brandished an angry claw. Ella yelped and jumped back into Brick's arms. The coaster and chanting could be heard as the cart rattled back in. "It's about time" said Scarlett as she walked to the controls and hit the shut-off switch. The safety bars lifted and the doors opened. "Awwwww man,but we we're having so much fun!" Lindsay wailed. "Can't we do one more?" Topher asked, "I think I can handle it". Scarlett shook her head, "Sorry guys,Monokuma wants you all off". Lightning crossed his arms, "You gotta be sha-kidding me! I'm so close to winning". Monokuma walked over and brought his claw again, "Off. Now." he said menacingly. "Just one more time!" Harold asked. "Big Buzzkill! Big Buzzkill!" Lightning began chanting, obviously being joined by Topher,Harold and Lindsay. Monokuma looked furious, but after hearing "Big Buzzkill" be chanted fifty times,he caved and allowed one more lap. "But I'm serious, get off after this next go or I swear I'll destroy you" Monokuma chuckled. "ONE MORE TIME! ONE MORE TIME!" the four chanted as they rolled up the incline once more. "Why'd you cave and let them go?" asked Bridgette, looking down at the bear. Monokuma shrugged, "I just hate to spoil someone's fun, guess it's a hindrance to being so adorable!".
Finally Monokuma had gotten Topher,Lightning,Lindsay and Harold off of the roller coaster, although they did all demand a rematch to find out the true winner of their friendly competition. "So,what's so your important that you wanted to tell us?" asked Harold. "Simple! I've got your next wonderful motive! But first, you'll have to follow me!" Monokuma announced, waving his arms and walking away. Cautiously the students followed him to the giant building with the Monokuma train parked outside. "What do you think it's gonna be?" Topher whispered to Harold. Harold thought for a moment. "No idea. Maybe it's going to be something similar to the Hell Climb Pillar from JoJo Part 2?" he replied. "Hell Climb Pillar?" Topher asked, sounding nervous. "Mhm. It was the first training exercise Joseph and Caesar had to go through,in which they had to climb an oil covered,20 meter tall pillar using only the Hamon in their fingertips. It took Caesar a minimum of 61 hours to reach the top" Harold explained, "Though when I think about it,there's not really anyway it could kill us since I'm pretty sure none of us can use Hamon". "Is this Hamon stuff a super power?" asked Topher. Harold nodded, "It's sorta along those lines. It's an ancient breathing technique from the first two parts that's based on doing what's essentially karate charged with the power of the sun and used to kill undead monsters like Zombies,Vampires and Pillar Men". Topher was intrigued, "Sounds really cool! Would love to see that stuff in action!". Harold smiled, "I'll definitely show it to you later! Luckily I was able to find loads of the original mangas in the library on the Second Island, you can borrow them and read the series if you want. Then when we get outta here you can come round to my place and we can watch the anime together". Topher gave a thumbs up, "Sounds like a great plan, without a doubt I'll hold up to you on that". "Harold really seems like a cool guy, weird that I haven't spoken with him much. I'll try my best to get into this JoJo stuff" Topher thought to himself, "I think Harold and I grew a little closer today".
"Alllllll aboard!" Monokuma yelled as everyone climbed on board. With a high pitched whistle and small puff of the steam, the train chugged into the dark tunnel. It was incredibly dark,to which the end couldn't even be seen. It wasn't made any less nerve wracking with Harold reciting the Willy Wonka boat speech perfectly as steam continued to rise. It got to a point where Topher felt like he was suffocating with the amount of steam and coughing. He looked at Alejandro, who was sitting next to him,and was shocked to see he was passed out. "Wha? What's *cough* going on?" Topher spluttered. He soon realised everyone was coughing wildly and beginning to pass out in front and behind him. "Gah! Sleeping gas!" Brick yelled, "Cover your mouths!" he barked. He wrenched his shirt over his mouth and nose before grabbing Topher's arm. "Keep the others safe,I'm going to find a gas mask!" Brick spluttered, "I'll be back to *cough* save you all! Just hang on *cough* in there!". Topher couldn't stop coughing, and could feel himself starting to black out. He barely watched as Brick slowly stumbled down the long tunnel towards the light, wrenching and coughing while staggering from wall to wall. The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was Brick falling to ground.
-END OF PART 1-
(Coyler's note: Dang was this pretty fun to write. It was kinda nice taking a breather to just have a bit of fun with the characters and their location rather than jumping straight into things. If you hadn't guessed,I'm giving the role of main partner to Harold for this chapter. He hasn't really done much,so I figured I'd let him shine with his mad skillz and such. Bet you didn't expect it to end on a cliffhanger without the motive being explained, but for those who've played DR2 you might have an idea. This chapter might end up having 4 parts,I'm not quite sure yet. What I do know is that it'll be a long one. Hope you all enjoyed as usual, remember to follow, favourite, review, etc. Coyler, out!)
