- Emhyr var Emreis, Emperor of Nilfgaard

Act 1: Old Temeria

Chapter 2: His Imperial Majesty, Emhyr var Emreis

Story Start.

"Well, that was a surprise."

"You don't say."

"Why is the Wild Hunt chasing us?"

"I'll explain later, but first, we must go inside Vizima first."

"It's been some time since you two saw each other, mind not arguing every second. You two sound like two old married couple."

"Please don't Naruto, let's not start a conversation about this."

"What? I'm just stating what I'm hearing, besides you and Geralt are old, and a couple, just not married… Don't look at me like that, we're nearly there, and seems that the guards recognized you, they're opening the gates. Let's go."

-A few hours later: Royal Palace at Vizima-

"That was refreshing…" Naruto muttered as he exited the bath from his private chambers inside the Temerian Royal Palace, this chamber was commissioned for him by Medell, King of Temeria and father of King Foltest, before his defeat by Virfuril near Hagge, as a token of gratitude.

"I guess it would be considering you haven't taken a bath for some time now, due to your group hunting Yennefer."

"Kaguya-hime, you do know that I always clean myself with a spell every day without the need of removing my armor, right? But then, I guess you're right, a real bath is still better than anything." Naruto replied as he walked towards a mannequin that wears Naruto's royal Ñoldorin armor from ages past.

"I should wear this, haven't worn this armor for a long time."

"Yeah, it fits the setting, also to show Emhyr who's the real ruler here," Kaguya replied through their mind link as Naruto went his closet to get the robes he needs to wear before donning the armor.

"Don't let them hear that, besides, when this war ends the Nilfgaardian Empire will cease to exist. Emhyr knows that, I've told him years ago, that even with Nilfgaard being peaceful as it is, history will never lie, many people knew the policies of the empire, the good and the bad, but most people, even inside the occupied states in the empire, knows that sooner or later, these will backfire to the emperor."

"When do you think you can enact your plans?"

"It depends on what happens, but it will end with this way: a united Continent starting from the Northern Realms, most likely after Radovid is dead and the Church of the Eternal Fire destroyed. I'll have to unite the North under one banner, Tancred already pledged to me, therefore, what we need to do is to do what we've been doing, help the common folk, unite them, empower them, give them hope and better lives, and then, call upon our own armies to halt Nilfgaard's advance and push them out of the North while we rebuild and unite the realms under one banner. Then, we'll see what happens next," Naruto replied as he finished and donned the royal armor made for him years ago.

"Nice, you look good on them, the last time you wore that armor is during the summit at Loc Muinne when the negotiations broke down into a bloody massacre," Kaguya said as Naruto secured the golden cape with his coat of arms at his back.

"Yeah, the only thing missing is my helm, but then, I don't really need it, we're not going into battle, not yet. Besides, the crown of New Gondolin will be enough." Naruto replied as he opened a chest containing the crown of a kingdom somewhere far away, he then transformed it into a jewelled circlet and placed it around his forehead. He grabbed Ringil and secured the sword and the sheath on his left side, leaving the bow and quiver on the side, as he does not need them. Naruto then walked away from his chamber towards the door which he locked with seals, and of course, with a key.

"You're going?"

"Yeah, to meet up with Geralt who is most likely being cleaned, and complaining about the doublets these noble Nilfgaardians wear," he replied as he unlocked the door and exited, as soon as he exited the door, he saw two guards on standby on either side of his door. He ignored them and locked the door with seals before walking away.

The blond continued to walk through the marble halls of the palace towards where he knows Geralt might be, he passed by guards who looked at his armor and Nilfgaardian nobles who talked with each other, soon, he came upon the royal garden where there are nobles sitting, chatting, plotting, etcetera. He opened one of the doors where there are two guards standing by, similar to his and entered. He then came upon the Ambassador Var Attre whom he knew when the man was still young, the man was busy, so he went past him and went on deeper in the large room and came upon Geralt, newly shaved, who is wearing an elegant Nilfgaardian doublet with matching pants and shoes and is currently being taught by the Chamberlain how to bow.

"Leg extended, hand flat, head down, chin to chest. The gentleman will rehearse," the Chamberlain said as Geralt went on to practice and failed miserably.

"Wrong, wrong, wrong," the Chamberlain shook his head, "Once more. Leg extended hand flat, head down, chin to chest. The gentleman will rehearse." Geralt did it again, and this time, getting it right.

"Hmm, lacking fluidity and grace. But we've learned to expect less of Nordlings," the Chamberlain replied, and before he can continue Naruto interrupted.

"Well, well, Geralt, practicing how to bow, you've never bowed to anyone before, well, except the day you were knighted," said Naruto as he showed himself to the two men, Geralt raised an eyebrow at Naruto's attire while the Chamberlain looked at Naruto, before silently appraising what he's wearing, 'uptight bastards' as Naruto would put it.

"Sir, you've seen the other gentleman rehearsing how to bow, perhaps you also know how to bow?"

"Of course I do, I've seen many do it in Nilfgaard, but if you do not know, I do not bow to anyone, the emperor knows this and respects this, you can ask him if you want," Naruto answered with a serious tone, so that he is not forced to rehearse that stupid Nilfgaardian bow. The Chamberlain remained silent before nodding and began to walk towards the door.

"Come with me," he said as he opened the door and led the two towards the inner chambers of the palace.

"The gentlemen will address the emperor only when asked to and using the appropriate title," the Chamberlain said as they walked past a corridor will mannequins wearing heavy Nilfgaardian armor sets and banners with the Great Sun of Nilfgaard.

"Your Archmagnificency?" Geralt sarcastically asked, though being a witcher, there is no emotion in his voice, so, it ended up sounding like a decent question.

"I see the gentleman is in the mood for jests. I fear the emperor might not share his disposition. 'Your Imperial Majesty' will suffice. Spoken loudly, clearly, and with respect," The Chamberlain stated as they went up some steps and opened the door, revealing the office of the emperor, with a number of nobles with them, and the attention of everyone immediately went on them. The chamberlain entered first, followed by Geralt, Naruto did not immediately enter and watched from behind, he wants to watch Geralt if he bows or not to Emhyr.

"Bow before His Imperial Majesty, Deithwen Addan yn Carn aep Morvudd, Emhyr var Emreis!" There were a few silent moments before the Chamberlain said in a hushed whisper the word 'bow'. And he did, Geralt bowed, he hasn't done that to anyone for a long time.

"Your Imperial Majesty." Geralt greeted after bowing, and the chamberlain was going to address the emperor before Naruto walked inside the room with the grace of a ruler, and the nobles and Emhyr's attention went to him. The nobles raised their eyebrows while Emhyr stood from his seat, the rest noticed it and raised an eyebrow. Emhyr gave a curt nod to Naruto and replied in the same manner.

"All except the vatt'ghern and Lord Naruto will leave." The nobles and the chamberlain left without saying anything, but they have one question in mind "Who is this Lord Naruto? And why the emperor stood up when he entered the room?" or like those.

"Emhyr."

"Naruto."

The two greeted each other civilly and the emperor sat down again as Naruto and Geralt stood together.

"I thought you bowed before no man." Emhyr turned his gaze to Geralt who looked at him.

"Didn't want to disappoint the chamberlain. We're friends." Replied the witcher who seems to be known everywhere.

"Let me guess, this wasn't a social call? Is this about her?" Naruto asked the emperor who nodded.

"As always, you're sharp as ever. Yes, this is about Cirilla… she's returned, and she's in danger. The Wild Hunt pursues her." Emhyr said as he stood up and looked at the painting of a young Ciri, dressed in a gown, and her painted facial reaction says everything about what she thought at that moment, and it wasn't pleasant.

"I know, I sensed that explosion of immense power from Ard Skellig, that belongs to Ciri, no doubt about that. And, the Wild Hunt has been pursuing her for years, didn't you know that?" Naruto asked as Geralt looked to Emhyr who nodded, as always, exuding the aura of supreme authority, but it was nothing to both Naruto and the Witcher as they are used to such things.

"Yes, it is always about her blood. It has been always about that…" Emhyr trailed on and went quiet. While he may be the most powerful man in the Continent, as far as any normal folk would know, Emhyr var Emreis knows who and what Naruto is, and he knows that the blond can destroy anything and everything if he wants to. To the emperor, Naruto can be your greatest friend ever or your worst nightmare magnified tenfold and that was an understatement.

He knows Naruto could be the greatest enemy of Nilfgaard should he side with the Northern Realms or even worse, unite the entire North and make their own Empire, it wasn't impossible as Naruto never liked Nilfgaard, too prissy and arrogant, naïve at the mysteries of the world as he said once. Whilst the Nordlings are hardened folks, they've always lived in hard times compared to the Nilfgaardians and that is what Naruto like about them.

"Remembering the fuckups that you did? I see that's good. You were an idiot and still is, do you even know what is happening to your court back in Nilfgaard? Plotting, scheming, backstabbing, the usual stuff, for a civilization that prides itself the most advanced in the Continent, Nilfgaard is no different from any kingdom I've seen throughout the centuries I've been here. And most of all, you have a horrible track record of being a father to Ciri."

That was a blunt statement by Naruto, and Emhyr knew it. The emperor may hate Naruto for what he said, he knows Naruto is merely telling the truth. He was never a father material, he never will be, and the worst of all, he knows it's the truth, but maybe, who knows, given a chance, he might mellow out.

"What do you want?" Geralt asked Emhyr who turned to look at him.

"You will find her and bring her to me."

"Are you sure? Ciri… left. Went far, far away." Geralt asked, unsure about the fact that Ciri is back.

"Do you believe I'd drag you here in the middle of a war to discuss a rumour?" Emhyr shot back to Geralt, seemingly annoyed at Geralt.

"I think anyone can be wrong, even an emperor." Geralt replied stoically.

"I had forgotten how insolent you can be. I haven't the time to convince you, nor the desire, in fact, Yennefer will do that - after the audience." Emhyr stated to Geralt who immediately answered with a question.

"How many men in your army? Twenty thousand? Thirty? So why us?" He asked.

"You know why. Because she trusts both of you."

"That's a fact, yes. So, tell me why you're looking for her. Doubt it's about making up for all those years," Geralt said to him as he sat back to his chair as Naruto watched the conversation between the two.

"For reasons of state. As always. Enough of this banter, you will agree regardless. If not for any other reason is because I will pay you," said Emhyr as he glanced to Geralt. "Much more than you customarily receive in a contract."

The Witcher was about to reply, but Naruto raised his hand and spoke instead. "While additional money sounds good… to common men, for us, however, what is necessary is information, not motivation. Emhyr, you know well that your daughter leaves few tracks," said Naruto, before he finished. "Finding her is like finding a needle in a haystack."

"True indeed, which is precisely why I wanted you to look for her," answered the Emperor as he sat down at his chair. "You are the most powerful person I know of. I look forward to the days to come; this audience is finished. Mererid!"

"Not every day you hear the leader of the most powerful nation in the world call another person the most powerful," quipped Geralt as the two went to find Yennefer.

"That's the last time you'll hear him say it, he has pride too you know," replied Naruto while Mererid interrupted them.

"Follow me and remain silent, if the gentlemen pleases. Please keep close. There are many honourable guests in the palace, whom you need not bother."

Naruto grunted in acknowledgment and remained quiet until they came by a door near the garden which he saw some noblemen and women in conversation, and he promptly ignored them.

"Once the gentleman is done, he should see me to retrieve his possessions… as for the lord, I have been assured that you know what must be done," said Mererid and Geralt nodded while Naruto opened the door in front of them and entered.

Geralt followed him as they walked passed a chamber with Ambassador var Attre within, but ignored them and went straight toward Yennefer's chamber, and they saw her there, quite busy as she looked over the documents on the table at the centre of the room, she then glanced up and saw the two men.

"Geralt! That tunic - you look positively smashing, oh! - and Naruto, my, you look just you're about to be crowned as king," she said while the blond rolled his eyes in amusement.

"Ugh!" Geralt grunted. "Dying to take it off."

"I'd consider that a proposition under different circumstances… one I might even take you up on. But we've matters to attend to. Now, do you understand why I'm at Emhyr's court?" Asked Yennefer while Naruto sighed and Geralt nodded.

"Mhm. And seems we're in the same boat, now. Ciri - she's really back? No chance he's mistaken?" He asked as they looked down the table a saw a sketch what alleged to be as Ciri's likeness, and she has truly grown up, and that scar under her left eye, unmistakably belonged to her.

"How about that… she's grown up," reminisced Geralt.

"Reminds me of someone I know…"

"Who?"

"Lara Dorren."

The two stared silently at him while he just shrugged his shoulders. "What? Let me be the old man that I am. I knew Lara very well, and her entire bloodline down to Ciri. As if you didn't already know, stop looking at me like that."

Yennefer shook her head and continued. "Anyway, it's been years since you trained together at Kaer Morhen. A great deal has changed."

"You haven't. Not a bit," said Geralt while Yennefer shook her head.

"I missed those awkward compliments of yours… but let's focus on Ciri, alright?"

"Just get a room, will you? Just not mine," quipped Naruto and the two just ignored him.

"Right. Emhyr said the Wild Hunt's after her. I'd find that hard to believe - but what happened yesterday… how did they track us down?" Inquired Geralt while Yennefer sighed

"Because of me. You see… I've spent months searching for Ciri. Using locating spells, haruspicy, geomancy, anything, really. I knew the Wild Hunt might sense it, perhaps even find me, but… I thought I'd tricked them."

"Yeah, that's never going to work…" trailed Naruto while Yennefer looked at him before he continued. "Ciri's powers are beyond of this… world, you see, almost like mine, almost… and you'll never track her like the Wild Hunt can with their navigators… and they picked up your scent."

"Mhm. I've sensed them on my trail, hunting me, for some time," she explained to the two men. "If not for you and Emhyr's soldiers, they'd have gotten what they were after. I can't risk another encounter like that. It's time to put away the magic, turn to more traditional methods… to the best tracker that I know."

The sorceress looked toward Geralt who straightened. "You must find her, Geralt… you as well, Naruto. Before the Wild Hunt does."

"And we will rest assured, I felt that explosion of power from Skellige, that definitely was Ciri," said Naruto and Yennefer nodded.

"So, where's Ciri been seen, exactly? Apart from that magical explosion from Skellige of course," asked Geralt.

"Two places - Velen and Novigrad," she replied, and Naruto just sighed, the last two places he wanted to be. "The trail in Velen is most promising. You two should make that your first stop. Ask for a merchant named Hendrik at the Inn of the Crossroads. One of the emperor's agents, he should get in touch with you."

Geralt raised an eyebrow. "That's it? No passwords, secret handshakes?"

"None. Sorry to spoil your fun, but you've been reading a lot of Naruto's books over here, your boyhood fantasies about the crafts of the trade," said Yennefer while Naruto acted like he was offended, but they knew it was only an act.

"Excuse me, madam? Those ain't fantasies there, those are stories from my homeland."

"Right," drawled Yennefer before she continued. "All we have in Novigrad are unconfirmed reports, rumours. But there you will have the help of our mutual acquaintance. Triss Merigold. Apparently, she's got a cozy flat on the main square."

"Yeah, I sent her there months ago, but I'm sure she'll be delighted to see us. And you? What will you do?" Asked Naruto while Yennefer paused for a moment and glanced toward the fireplace.

"I shall sail for Skellige," she answered with finality. "That magic explosion blew half a forest there, and as you said, it probably had something to do with Ciri. I'll be in Kaer Trolde… join me there once you've learned something."

She walked toward the fireplace and stood there while Geralt followed her. Naruto remained where he stood and looked down the alleged sketch of Ciri and stared at it for some time.

"One thing before we go…" he heard Geralt said to Yennefer, but he tuned out in favour of a conversation with the one in his head.

"Beautiful, isn't she?" said Kaguya while Naruto hummed in agreement. "Lara's blood is strong on this one, and in turn, her daughter Riannon… I said that to you, years ago, back in Kaer Morhen."

"It's been years since then, but now, everything will be different… I can feel it on my bones, and I don't want to bring my soldiers here."

"Do you really have any choice when it comes to that? The Lord Father knows that it will come to it soon, besides, you don't want Him to come here, and I don't want to see that other me," replied Kaguya while Naruto sighed.

"She's not bad, you know. Scary, sure, but bad? No. And with the Lord Father… I'd rather establish His religion here instead of the Eternal Fire… but anyway, let's forget about that for later, Ciri first."

"Emhyr wants to make his daughter his successor as Empress."

"I know, a change of heart from what he first wanted… I wonder why though?" He answered then looked up when he saw Yennefer entered a portal that she made and left the two men alone.

"So… what now?" The blond asked.

"Let's refresh our heads at the current state of affairs with the Ambassador over there," replied Geralt and Naruto agreed then the two walked towards the man by a table with the map of the Northern Realms sprawled over it.

"Ambassador Henry var Attre? Yennefer suggested that we ask you about current events. The war, and so on."

The man looked up toward them and saw Naruto who nodded in greetings. "Of course. If you will, let us approach the map."

"How's the war going?" Asked Geralt as they looked down on the map of the Northern Realms. "I mean, apart from the fact that Nilfgaard's triumph is imminent?"

"I assume this to be a private conversation," he assumed and Geralt nodded. "We've no witnesses, so let's dispense with propaganda, even that shrouded in irony."

"Our offensive was going splendidly - until winter came. Aedirn was in such disarray that we encountered no resistance," he explained as he pointed the location of Aedirn on the map before he moved to the Pontar. "We had reached the Pontar before the first snows. Only a weakened Kaedwen remained… and Radovid's Redania, which had ignored the rest of the North's pleas for help."

"Typical of Radovid," said Naruto and var Attre nodded.

"We thought they'd sue for peace, perhaps even submit to vassalisation. We waited for spring, certain of victory."

Naruto snorted in amusement while Geralt raised an eyebrow. "Radovid? Submit?"

"Yes. A vain hope, I agree," answered Henry and then continued. "Radovid sent no peace envoys, nor did he advance on our position. Instead, he trudged over the snow-bound Kestrel Mountains… and attacked Kaedwen, his ally. This attack took the Kaedweni by surprise. They were still mourning the loss of their king."

Geralt looked down the map as Henry continued. "Rudderless and dejected, they laid down their arms after a few lost skirmishes - and joined Radovid. And so, by spring, instead of two weak enemies, we had only one powerful one."

"That admiration I hear in your voice?" The witcher asked.

"Radovid is our foe… but I cannot deny he is clever. He played us both for fools. Particularly dense ones at that, good on him," replied Ambassador var Attre.

"What about Kovir?" Geralt asked as he pointed at the position of Kovir on the map.

"Kovir values its neutrality. Enough not to lend its armies or, more importantly, even its coin to either side."

"Hmm… Tancred is a wise man, some people have seen to that," said Naruto and Henry agreed.

"Indeed, but returning to the war… this spring, there was a massive battle in the marshes of Velen. Massive, yet indecisive. Both sides suffered enormous losses. Unprecedented, even. Radovid has retreated across the Pontar. He's safe for now…" trailed on by Henry.

"Until reinforcements?" Asked Naruto and var Attre nodded.

"Yes, until reinforcements come from the south. Then Emperor Emhyr var Emreis will deal with him once and for all."

"Couldn't you just go home?" Geralt suggested. "Save everyone a lot of marching. Not to mention, a few human lives."

"I'm afraid the stakes are too high to fold now. We can only go all in," he replied, face turned grim.

"Hm. How about Velen?" Geralt asked.

"As bad as ever," replied var Attre. "Perhaps even worse. This land never flowed with milk and honey, now it flows with blood. Armies from both sides have swept through it several times, trampling fields, looting granaries, burning villages. Famine grips the populace."

"Mhm," answered Geralt. "So, how's ruling that earthly paradise for you?"

The ambassador sighed long and deep. "Not well, to be honest."

"Our forces are spread too thin as it is, and Velen is chiefly swampy forests that are difficult to control. We've had several patrols never return to their camps," he said and the two raised an eyebrow at that; they were not surprised. It was a 'no man's land' after all. "Thus, we've temporarily delegated authority in this region to a certain Nordling, a former low-ranking officer in the Temerian Army, one Phillip Strenger. Better known by his nom de guerre, the Bloody Baron. I advise you well - avoid him."

"Oh, interesting. Also, Ambassador, what if I decide to turn Velen into my own… land, completely transforming the swamp into a bountiful land…?" Naruto's question surprised the Ambassador, and var Attre knew Naruto… they knew one another for a long time.

"If you manage to do that, Nilfgaard won't be able to do anything… the Empire knows you by your reputation, the Emperor knows you personally, and so do I… so, if you do manage to do that, well, the pages of history will now be written by you. I don't want to have a war against you," said var Attre and Geralt remained silent, but saw that pause as his chance and continued his questions.

"Uhm. So, any news from Novigrad? Is the free city still free?"

"Yes," nodded Henry, before his eyes narrowed. "Although everyone knows this won't last. Radovid is in Oxenfurt, and the emperor is here, in Vizima. At Novigrad's doorsteps, both. And both require coin and ships. Novigrad can provide these. Which is why the mood in the city is rather… well, on edge."

"Meaning?"

"How do men deal with fear?" Henry looked at them with utter seriousness. "They seek reassurance… and scapegoats. The Church of the Eternal Fire understands this perfectly. And so, it promises to improve the lives of its flock by pointing out the guilty. Who started this war? Who profits from it? Why, it's obvious - mages, elves, dwarves. In a word, any and all deviants. I've been stationed in Novigrad for thirteen years. First as a consul, then as ambassador. I've seen a great deal - cruelty, cynicism, greed."

"But what is happening there now concerns me greatly, and my lord Naruto, I'd rather not have you between the emperor and Radovid in Velen. If you're going to change the course of this war," he looked toward the blond. "Change the Free City of Novigrad, shape it to your will."

Silence reigned between the three men for a few moments until Geralt asked the ambassador.

"What's new in Skellige?" var Attre furrowed his eyebrows.

"Nothing," he conclusively said. "The islanders pride themselves on that, don't they? Doing everything according to tradition? As their forefathers did. And like their forefathers, they quarrel with each other, pillage, occasionally attack our transports. This is cumbersome… but nothing more. Skellige has always been a footnote in history. And so, it shall remain."
