There's something painful living in the house with them. It lurks in the shadows and in the garden that is now free of rats.

If Tonks didn't know better they'd say that there was a dementor living with them.

All of their worst memories seem closer to bursting free, and every time something reminds them of a bad day it reminds them of the dementors and that reminds them of Sirius. Most of their bad days have something to do with Sirius as well; from being bullied in school for their Death Eater family (or their blood traitor family) to that terrible evening they learnt they'd never see him again.

For lack of other options (their mum's the only other one and she's hurting even more than Tonks) they take to telling Snuffles all their woes. They try not to dwell on Sirius too often but the fact is that all roads lead back to him.

Their colleagues discomfort and unease around them – there'd already been whispers about the flexible morality of changelings, and somehow this hurts even worse. Their mother's red eyes whenever they visit. The dementors that seem to have encircled all of Britain, and not just Hogwarts. The idea, hidden and suppressed, that her cousin slash big brother could be attempting to kill a child.

Inside the office, they have an unnerving feeling that their reckoning is soon coming.
