Remus is unsteady on his feet walking into the front room to be questioned. He wishes Moody were still here. He wishes Snape wasn't. (Why is Snape here?) He's going to make out that Remus knew all along about Sirius just like he has been all year.
And Remus had made it so easy for him too. He hadn't told anyone that Sirius was an animagus. He had no excuse for that.
"Well Remus, if you could just tell us the events that led to now?" Albus manages to hide his disappointment but Remus is sure its there.
"I was in Hogsmeade and I saw Sirius." There. That's it. That's the whole thing.
"You recognised his animagus form?"
"Yes."
"You knew he was an animagus?"
Remus winces internally. "Yes."
"And is there any reason why you haven't shared this information?"
Remus doesn't answer. He'd like to think he would have done eventually but he takes too long for his opponents.
"How long have you known Sirius Black, Mr. Lupin?" Fudge says, which might be a rhetorical question, but is also a much easier one.
"Since we were eleven."
"Have you been his friend that whole time?"
"I regret that I haven't been a friend to Sirius for the past twelve years." You're not going to catch him out that easily.
"So you are claiming that you haven't been helping him."
"It's not a claim, it's a fact. I haven't helped him."
"With the exception of not telling anyone he could turn into a dog and thus allowing him to live in the same quarters as an auror."
Brilliant Lupin. Truly amazing. Stellar job. You really convinced them.
