Chapter 2
A/N: hello there my dear readers, sorry that the last chapter was so rough, I wrote it at almost three am. Anways, I thank those who gave me reviews.
Guest: Sorry I don't have a link to the site of my previous cover art, I'll look into setting one up. But yes, I do all of it myself, so thanks for the complement, I'm trying to get better.
KingGodzilla: Thanks for the review, I'm ready to see the showdown as well.
And finally, KajuMaster19: Believe it or not, I actually do research before my stories, so yes, I know Rodan's gender. I know he's male. Now, I ask you to pay attention to the wording of my story, specifically the word hybrid, which typically means a composite of 2 different things. Nothing says the resulting hybrid offspring of animals has to be one specific biological gender. So yes, his hybrid offspring is female, deal with it.
Now, with that out of the way, I hope y'all enjoy this chapter and remember I just own my OCs in this story, that's it. Let me know what y'all think.
Watchtower, July 5, 03:45EST
This is not how Diana expected to be spending her day. She originally expected to be congratulating the young proteges of her colleagues on their first steps of joining the League. And then meet up with their mentors to discuss the next steps to official membership. Unfortunately, evil never rested as proven by Wotan's attempt to block out the sun, which then lead to the kids running off and discovering Cadmus. And from there, things only got worse. First they had Superman's clone to deal with, plus the kids deciding to form their own team, and now they had these three unknowns to deal with as well.
Three unknown teenagers, that had apparently been faking unconsciousness and had fled the first chance they got.
Though she couldn't blame them, poor kids were rightfully terrified. But that didn't mean trying to find them wasn't frustrating.
Fortunately, if spending time around Dick and Wally had taught her anything, it was that teens loved food. So perhaps the plate of cookies in her hand would be a suitable peace offering. She would've preferred to give them ice cream, but she didn't know how long finding it would take and she didn't want Barry to find her secret stash. So chocolate chip it was. It was better than Oliver's chili; that stuff would not be making friends anytime soon.
Now, she just needed to find one of them, preferably before Bruce could scare the crap out of them some more. Sighing, the Amazon came to a stop, looking out the window. She just had to think, she used to try to get away too when she was little. Always hiding from her tutors so she could go out and watch her sisters train.
So, if Themiscyra were built like the Watchtower, where would've she hidden?
Somewhere dark, quiet, out of the way. Somewhere preferably up high or low. Somewhere she wouldn't be noticed easily. People always forgot to look up, check under the narrow nooks and crannies, peer further into the shadows.
Diana smirked, looking up. So that left several possibilities: the closets, the storage room, the vents, the rafters, and the ledges.
With that plan in mind, she ran to grab a flashlight and flew up into the air. Two of the kids had wings, so odds were that one of them were hiding up high where they thought they were out of reach.
-.-
4:15EST
In the end, she did find one of them, just not the ones she expected. Somehow, the lone boy of the group they saved had managed to climb high onto one of the rafters, hidden in the shadows. If it wasn't for the flash of his eyes reflecting light in the darkness, she would've missed him.
"There you are," she smiled, gently landing on the beam, aiming the flashlight at him, "You've had everyone worried."
Unsurprisingly, the boy bared his sharp fangs, hissing as he scrambled back out of the light. Due to the dim light reflecting off his scales, she watched as the boy jumped to a rafter just above them, his claws leaving grooves in the metal as he climbed higher and back onto a ledge. His golden eyes gleaming from where he observed her above.
Flying up to the next rafter, she sat down a safe distance away. "Hey, it's ok, you don't have to be scared," she reassured holding up the plate. "I brought you some food. You have to be hungry." Taking a cookie in hand, she too a bite, showing they were safe. "See, it's ok," she set down the plate and gently pushed it in his direction as she heard his stomach rumble. "Go ahead."
After a moment, she refrained from grinning as he slowly emerged from his corner, carefully approaching the plate. He hesitated another moment, before another growl came from his stomach, making the Amazon wince, what had those people given him? Nothing but nutrients through an IV?
Reluctantly, the boy took a cookie, sniffing it warily before biting down on it. A split second later, she remembered that letting people who to eat too much when they'd been starved was something that wasn't supposed to be done. Her attention snapped back to the boy and her eyes widened as she saw him staring at the cookie in his hand with wide eyes before practically inhaling it.
"Um…sweetie, maybe you shouldn't eat too much at once," Diana warned, remembering the first time she ate too much ice cream, "you could hurt yourself."
He did not believe the warning. She didn't blame him, she hadn't either.
-.-
Superman's day could not be going worse. First Wotan tried to block out the sun, then he learned his arch nemesis Lex Luthor made a clone of him, the he learned he kidnapped kids and experimented on them, said rescued kids then escaped, and now he was trying to keep one from lighting the Watchtower on fire.
When he found the girl, he had expected her to be terrified. She was, just not the way he expected. When it came to fear, he was used to people cowering away or being frozen; either way, both needed reassurance and comfort.
Not this kid. The moment she saw him, the Man of Steel found himself caught off guard when she instantly roared and hurled a fireball at him. He now needed a new cape cause she attacked him and lit it on fire. Which was honestly impressive, cause it took a lot to light his cape on fire.
However, having the cause of said fire flying unimpeded around a space station. Not a good idea.
"Kid! We're not going to hurt you!" he called. Speeding up, he came to a stop in front of her. "Please, we just want to talk!"
"You think I fucking believe that bullshit?!" she snarled. Diving right at him, Clark then found himself lying in a massive crater on the ground with a bleeding nose.
A green form landed beside him and the Man of Steel smiled as Hal helped him to his feet. "You ok dude?"
"Yeah, but she packs a punch," he replied, wiping the blood off.
"No kidding, I saw her toss you," the Green Lantern snickered.
"Are you going to stand here laughing or are you going to help me contain her?" he grumbled.
"John already got her, I just wanted to make fun of you," Hal chuckled.
"I hate you."
"Aw, no you don't Supes."
-.-
Captain Atom stood beside Batman as they warily stood across from the fairy girl. She stood in the window, looking outside at space with wide eyes. She made no acknowledgement that they were there.
The silver hero glanced at his comrade, trying to gauge his interpretation of the situation. He would guess that she had no know interest in them, or was luring them into a trap. But he wouldn't guess. If there was one thing he learned with the League it was that when it came to figuring out what the heck was going on, Batman almost always got it right.
Sometimes he honestly did wonder if the Dark Knight had a power of prediction that they didn't know about.
"You're suspicious," an echo-like voice spoke. It took him a moment to realize that the statement had come from the girl before them. "Just as you have no interest in harming me, I have none in harming you."
"How do you that?" Batman growled.
Now, the girl turned to them, her glowing blue eyes blinking as she tilted her head. "You both make it obvious."
Well that explained absolutely nothing.
"Do you know where you are?" Batman continued.
The girl shook her head. "No. You speak as if it is needed to know. The scientists have never mentioned it before. I fail to see how it matters now." Her large wings spread, and she hopped off the window ledge, gliding down and landing in front of them. "But you do not look like scientists. Nor do you feel like them," Atom's brows rose as she turned to him, "you have emotions."
"Uh…thank you?"
She nodded, turning back to Batman. "You are not scientists?"
"No," he replied. "Where were you held before Cadmus?"
"Cadmus?"
"The place we found you and the other two," Atom stated.
"Other two?" she said looking towards the window. "That explains the emotions I felt, they seemed familiar. But, as for where we were before, we were in the lab."
"And where is the lab?"
This time she shrugged, "I was never told. The scientists did not like interacting with us more than they had to." She opened her mouth as if to speak again, before stopping as her stomach growled. Frowning, she looked confused. "I am not sure why my body does this. It never has before." Her gaze returned and Atom felt a chill as she reached her hand out.
Then, like when he had found her, her wings and eyes began to glow even brighter. The hero gasped, he felt the immeasurable amounts of energy he'd contained over the years from various nuclear disasters and supervillain attacks be pulled out of him. As quickly as it came, it stopped and the man stumbled back, barely noticing Batman in a wary stance. This…this is why they were in a radiation chamber, they could absorb radiation. And, based on the reaction to her stomach growling, they could feed on it.
"Who are you?" Batman growled.
"A3," she answered.
Atom could see Bat's jaw twitch at that. He would take that as the Dark Knight being just has unhappy as he was about having a number instead of a name. As far as they knew at least.
"A3. Do you have a name?" he questioned. "Something that is not your…label?"
At this question, the girl instantly seemed to relax, her massive wings folding back. "Oh, I thought you would expect me to follow lab protocol?"
"A3, this is not the lab," Atom reminded. "We rescued you from the lab. Which means you don't have to worry about them hurting you anymore."
"Oh…in that case you can call me Amber, it is the name Caretaker gave me," she smiled.
"Amber, that's a pretty name. I'm Captain Atom, and this is Batman."
"Nice to meet you."
As serious as ever, Batman stepped forwards, "Do you think you can answer some questions for us?"
"I will do my best."
/Hey guys, we got the girl with wings—the fiery one, not the fairy/ Lantern called interrupting the conversation.
"Is she hurt?" Atom asked.
/No, but she tried to light Clark on fire/
Atom could almost swear he saw the corner of Batman's mouth twitch. "Good. We have managed to locate Amber."
/Amber?/
"That's the other girl's name," Atom answered almost feeling smug. Seems like they made more progress than the others.
/Oh…hey? What's you're name?/
/HOW ABOUT YOU LET ME OUT OF THIS FUCKING BUBBLE AND FIGHT LIKE A REAL MAN!/ another voice screamed back.
Well…that was a decidedly different personality.
/Yeah…we may wanna have Dinah or someone talk to her. She might kill us if we let her out of this bubble/
"And the boy?" Batman inquired.
/We still haven't found him/ Clark answered.
/Yeah! I've run all over this place, for someone who can't fly, he's hard to track down!/ Flash called.
/He is not hiding in the vents/ Manhunter assured.
At this point, Atom wanted to facepalm. This day was so bizarre as it was. And now, of all the children to lose, they lost the only one who couldn't fly. How?
/As amusing as it is to hear you all struggling, I've got it handled/ Diana spoke up.
/You found him?/
/Yes, he was hiding in the highest rafters/ the Amazon chuckled. /I believe he climbed all the way/
"Do you need help?" Atom asked looking up. He could easily get up there quickly.
/No, he turns into a sweetie when you gain his trust/
Now Atom did not feel as impressed with his efforts. He was pretty sure they did not gain Amber's trust. She initially thought they worked for the people that kept her prisoner.
/Seriously? How? Cause ours is vicious!/ he heard Hal exclaim.
/He likes food/ she answered simply. /Though he might have a stomachache in a little bit. But right now he's content to just getting used to me around/
"Has he talked any?" Batman asked.
They could hear Diana pout, /Not yet, but I'm sure I can get him to soon. He just needs a friend. I'll see if I can get him to come back down/ They looked up as they heard echoes of bangs on the rafters. /Once he gets over his sugar high/
"What did you give him?" Batman deadpanned.
/Cookies/
"How many?"
/Um…a little over a dozen/
This time, Captain Atom did facepalm. Yes, he understood needing to gain trust, but really? What in the world made giving teens with unknown physiologies over a dozen cookies a good idea? He wouldn't even recommend that to a regular teen, let alone one that may have superpowers.
At least it hadn't been the gallon tub of ice cream she had hidden in the freezer. He didn't want to see what that would be like.
