Chapter 3

Téa started from the couch as a loud, demanding knock came through her apartment door. She tossed her book aside and looked through the peephole. She leaned back on her heels at the sight of Seto Kaiba standing outside her door. She quickly undid the locks and opened up her door.

She felt her cheeks heat and gave him an overly bright smile. "Kaiba, hi."

"Gardner," came with a curt nod.

Then, she realized she was only in shorts and a baggy dance company t-shirt while he was in an expensive fitted suit. His navy-blue shirt hugged his chest showing off the broad chest she knew was hiding underneath.

"If you're done staring, I'd like to come in."

She closed her mouth, embarrassed that it had been hanging open and stood to the side quickly as he strode past her, his cologne wafting in her direction. She closed the door as she watched him take in her tiny apartment. It wasn't much, but she made it as cozy as possible. She had just put up some hanging lights just a few days ago above a light pink couch.

"Would you like something to drink?" she asked, remembering her manners.

"No."

"Oh, well is something wrong? Or…" she trailed off, not really understanding what the President of Kaiba Corp. was doing standing in her small living room.

"Have you seen the paper?"

"No, why?"

"It's nothing major. Just some gossip about us last night. Apparently, we spent the night making bedroom eyes at each other and couldn't wait to get our clothes off each other."

Téa's cheeks heated at his words as images of them naked and sweating together flashed through her mind. "Oh, I mean, I'm sorry. I'm not, I mean I am sorry but, I seem to keep getting you into trouble."

"It's nothing. But I did feel that I should warn you that the rest of the geek patrol isn't thrilled."

Téa groaned and threw her head back in exasperation. "Please tell me they didn't call you."

"No." Téa breathed out a relieved sigh. "Wheeler showed up at my office." Her breath caught in her throat.

"Shit, Kaiba, I'm really-"

"Don't apologize for someone else's actions."

He fixed her with a cool stare that had her rooted to the spot.

"Right," she stammered, "still this is all my fault. I appreciate you coming here and warning me."

Kaiba simply continued to study her. Téa shifted her feet. Surely a phone call would have sufficed. Why did he come all the way out here himself?

Téa cleared her throat. "So, what did Joey say?"

"A lot of nonsense about staying away from you and how you were with Yugi."

Téa rolled her eyed and scoffed. "Of course. The fact that none of that is true doesn't seem to matter."

"That's what Valentine said."

Téa flinched. "Mai was there?"

"She was at my office…for a meeting. Wheeler stormed in a made a whole scene. Of course, that meant Valentine had to make a bigger one." Kaiba finally shifted his gaze away from her and started studying her apartment. She wasn't sure which made her more nervous.

"Ever since their breakup, that's certainly been a constant." Téa remarked.

Kaiba hummed, what she thought was in agreement.

"Why are you here, Kaiba?" He seemed to freeze at the question, but then turned his gaze back at her, his posture relaxed.

She didn't know what to make of his house call. The Kaiba she knew wouldn't have even peeled her out of that booth let alone take her back to his mansion. And now he's here because he's…what? Concerned for her feelings? She doubted it.

He seemed like he was about to answer until a knock came at her door. She gave Kaiba another curious look before heading to the door.

"Seems I'm being invaded," she muttered as she looked out the peephole. She opened the door to reveal Mokuba Kaiba holding a bag of what smelled to be delicious food. His smile was bright as Mokuba walked in, until stopping short at the sight of his brother.

"Seto!" he exclaimed. Then Mokuba gave his brother a wide grin. "What are you doing here?" his tone teasing.

"What are you?"

Mokuba held up the bag of food. "Hangover cure." Mokuba tilted his head and raised his brows. "Again, and you?"

"Just leaving a warning. Excuse me, I need to get going. I'll see you at home, Mokuba." With that, he exited the room without so much sparing a glance at Téa.

"Warning?" Mokuba asked Téa, his grin replaced by a frown.

Téa let out a sigh. "Unpack the food and I'll explain."
