"Mum!"
"Please, Dora. You won't be wearing them for long."
"Yeah, but I'll be wearing a bloody nose!"
"You will be fine for the length of the garden."
It looked like Andromeda had a lot more faith in her daughter than her daughter did.
"I will not."
"They're barely heels."
Tonks sent the shoes in her mother's hands a scowl. The fact that they were heels was more than enough reason for the scowl but the fact that they were white and actually exposed bits of skin was even more of a reason. Those two things alone were a good enough reason not to wear them in her book, never mind the heels. And sure, they would barely lift her off the ground but still. Her feet were going to be off the ground. At a weird angle at that. That was definitely a recipe for disaster for her! Her mum of all people should know this.
"My boots will be fine," she argued.
Andromeda sent a disapproving look down at her feet. Feet that were safely encased in her combat boots. Hey, they weren't even her clunky ones - these were a more narrow fit. And she had cleaned them. They looked cute with her dress too, they even matched with the leather of the belt that was around the waist of it (her own addition because the dress was just so... plain).
"Your boots are not fine."
"Come on. You don't want me to trip and fall out there, do you?"
Andromeda pursed her lips together and actually had to think about this.
"Mum!"
"Oh, okay," she gave in, putting those horrible shoes down.
Tonks resisted the urge to kick them away.
"But you're not wearing those horrible boots!"
"They aren't horrible!"
"Everything okay in here?" Ted asked through the door.
"It's okay to come in," Andromeda told her husband.
"I don't think it is."
"Ted."
Long years of marriage meant that Ted knew better than to ignore that tone. He came in with a smile on his face.
"Can you help me, dad?" Tonks asked in exasperation.
"If it will get you downstairs. You're going to be late."
"It's tradition" Andromeda dismissed. "Talk some sense in your daughter."
That was never a good statement and it usually never ended well for her.
"They're nice boots," he said, earning himself a glare from his wife. "But maybe not good for a wedding..."
"But I'm not wearing those heels!" Tonks insisted, waving her hands at the discarded shoes.
Ted looked at them and then frowned and then looked back at her.
"The boots aren't that bad, Annie," he told his wife.
"Ted."
"They are very Dora and it is her wedding."
Andromeda at them both and crossed her arms but neither Ted nor Dora said anything.
"Fine." She huffed and then looked at the clock. "Go and neaten yourself up or you'll be late."
"You just said that was tradition," but Tonks did as she was told even as she complained. Markup needed finished and the skirt of her dress straightened.
She liked her dress. So did Andromeda. It was a nice summer dress that hit her knees - white, of course, there was no budging on that. But it had the outline of flowers embroidered on that were scattered across it. In silver too, which was quite fitting she thought.
She returned from the bathroom (stupid nerves getting to her and her bladder) to a smiling Andromeda.
"You look lovely," she said, engulfing her in a hug. "Oh, my little girl is getting married."
But there was no time for a lot of emotion. Time was ticking on and she needed to be downstairs. To ls couldn't tell you how she managed to get down the stairs without falling or even tripping but she managed it. And then suddenly she was at the back door. This was it. The real thing.
Tonks couldn't help but smile as she saw Mad-Eye up at the front with Remus. She couldn't believe that he got himself authorised to perform weddings. It couldn't have been just for her, could it have been?
And there was Charlie, pulling faces at her in an attempt to make her make a fool of herself. No. That wasn't going to happen. Not today. Today, everything was going to go perfectly.
Of course, her being her, she had to just trip, didn't she? At her own wedding! But, also as usual, Remus managed to catch her.
"Got you," he said quietly with that gentle smile of his.
A flood of warmth filled her, and it wasn't just embarrassment. This was how they met, after all. Him catching her.
"You caught me," she couldn't help but say cheekily.
"In more ways than one."
Mad-Eye coughed pointedly at them, making them scramble to their positions. Oops. Good thing he did or else they would have done the whole kiss thing before they were married.
Now, Tonks had to be honest, she didn't pay much attention to what .ad-Eye was saying. She couldn't. She was too distracted. Way too distracted. First, there was Remus looking oh so delicious in that suit of his. He looked good in suits at the best of time but this suit and robe combination. Hmm mm! Perfection. Also, the way he was looking at her was distracting. Like he could see nothing else, the silly goof. But it made her heart flutter and sing and she was technically doing the same thing to him so she couldn't complain.
And finally, she was worried about the vows. Well, her vows. She was sure Remus' were going to be fantastic. Words came easily to him. Not to her. Especially when they had to do with feelings. Eurgh.
All of this meant that she really didn't pay attention to Mad-Eye. Actually, she was paying so little attention to him that he actually had to shout at her when it was time to say their vows. Oops.
"You can't scold the bride on her wedding day!" Charlie shouted from the row of chairs.
"I can if she's stopping the damned wedding," he grumbled right back.
"Nymphadora please just do as you're told," Andromeda decided to throw her two cents in.
Tonks knew it was probably inappropriate because she giggled at the ridiculousness of all of this. Trust this to happen at her wedding. She really couldn't do anything normal. Remus wasn't helping either. She saw how his lips were twitching!
So, she took a deep breath and recited her vows. They had decided to wrote their own, instead of the ready written ones. This seemed more personal. More real. More them.
Surprisingly, she was calm and confident sounding as she said them. Or maybe it wasn't. She was confident about getting married, after all. It just seemed right. And Remus' ever widening smile was more than worth it.
Then it was Remus' turn and they just took her breath away. He always was the more eloquent of the two of them but his vows were simple and full of his heart. Wow. For someone who guarded his heart so, Tonks was genuinely touched. And she fell in love with him all over again.
They kind of just stared at each other once they were done, neither wanting to break this spell that was over them.
"Go on and kiss now," Mad-Eye instructed them, breaking it for them.
Tonks was pretty sure that that wasn't how it was supposed to go but she wasn't going to argue with him. Not when she finally got to kiss a her very dashing Remus.
Neither of them needed any further instruction as their lips found each other.
It was a bit weird. Not the kiss. The kiss was brilliant just like it always was. But to deliberately kiss in front of people was a bit exhibition-y. Tonks was many things but she didn't really think of herself as an exhibitionist. It felt weird.
Though, that thought left her when Remus deepened the kiss, making Charlie whistle obnoxiously. Mmm. That was good.
