Remus didn't think that he'd moved so quickly in his life. And that was counting the time that James and Sirius thought that it would be a fantastic idea to see if Minerva was affected by catnip in their fourth year. It wasn't. Trust him. It really wasn't. But today he moved even faster than that. Of course, he was, Dora was sick and needed a Soother of some sort. He was so focused on getting where he needed to go that he actually stumbled when he apparated.
The problem was you couldn't exactly rush about in Diagon Alley anymore, lest you look like a threat. And, unfortunately, he was well known that his mere appearance counted as a threat. It was why he had barely gone out since the wedding, sticking to the muggle world when he could. It was just safer.
But he didn't care about safe right now, he cared about Dora. Okay, he wasn't so stupid as to forget all the precautions that he deemed necessary. A notice-me-not charm, hood of robes kept down (he had seen lower ranked Death Eaters search people for having their hood up - it was a sign you were hiding something, apparently. Notice-me-not charms were just better, for the lower-level Death Eaters anyway, they weren't exactly bright.
A few quick steps and he was in Knockturn Alley and immediately he became less of a concern to Death Eaters because what sort of Light person would go down this sort of street? Him. He would. Especially since there was the best Apothecary just down the first side street. Ah ha!
One quick transaction later (quick only once he realised, he still had the charm on and then removed it), he was out and apparating back home.
"Oof!"
He actually fell on the lawn of the Tonks' home when he returned. It felt ungainly. Is this how Dora felt?
Dora. Dora.
Remus ran into the house as quick as he could, inadvertently slamming the door behind him. Whoops. Paying no attention to that he scrambled up the stairs, knocking his elbow on the top of the bannisters as he did so. The bathroom door was closed for some reason but je pushed it open only to be met with the sight of Dora's stomach being engulfed in a green light.
"What's going on?" He demanded.
It came out harsher than he meant to but he was out of breath and worried.
Was that some sort of check for an illness? What did it mean?
"Calm down, Remus, Nymphadora is fine," Andromeda said.
"I will be if you stop calling me Nymphadora." Dora said in a disgruntled voice.
Andromeda didn't even scold her for that remark. Did that mean Dora was very ill?
"But she does need a stomach Soother," Andromeda continued as if she hadn't heard her daughter. "And she'll need them regularly for the next few months."
Remus pulled the Potions vial out of the bag and then almost immediately dropped it.
"What?"
What was so wrong with Dora that she was going to need stomach soothers for months on end? That couldn't be good!
"Do we need to get her to St Mungo's?" Remus asked, looking around for Ted - he was the Healer here, surely je should know what's going on?
"Did you get things sorted?" Ted asked, reappearing at that moment. "Remus, didn't you get the Potions?"
Okay, maybe he didn't know what was going on.
"He did." Andromeda said when Remus didn't reply. "I was just saying that our daughter is going to need more of those but you'll have to check of she can use other, stronger ones, if she's anything like me."
Ted was now giving his wife a look of confusion. Remus was just glad that it wasn't just him.
"What's going on?" Ted asked.
"I'm pregnant," Dora blurted out, looking carefully at Remus.
"You're pregnant?" He said faintly.
Pregnant? How could this happen? He could almost hear Sirius' laughter at this but he pushed it away. Of course, he knew how it happened, he wasn't stupid. But Dora was definitely on her Potions and he also used protection. Though he didn't always on her request... He shook his head. There was no point in focusing on that right now. Not when Dora was looking at him so expectantly.
"Pregnant?" He could only croak out again.
It was this moment that Andromeda chose to straighten up and smooth out her clothes.
"I'll leave you two to it," she said with a warm smile, doing just that and ushering Ted out with her, making sure to close the door behind them.
"Pregnant?" He repeated again, starting to feel like a broken record.
"Pregnant," Dora said weakly, she looked just as shell-shocked as he felt. "That's what that spell was for. Checking if I was or not."
"And green means yes."
That wasn't a question but Dora nodded anyway.
Bizarrely, the only thing he could think of was that his elbow suddenly hurt which was not an appropriate response.
"Um, well done?"
He said and almost immediately could have smacked himself around the back of the head. What sort of reaction was that? Why was he reaction to say that? What were you supposed to say when your partner announced she was pregnant?
Thankfully that stupid comment of his brought a bit of normality back to the room as Dora slugged him on the arm.
"Ouch!"
What the hell, Remus?"
Now there was an appropriate response. Granted, it was to his stupid one but still.
"Sorry! I don't know what to say!"
He really didn't especially since he was trying to process everything. He felt happy, scared, worried, in awe. Every single emotion, except for anger of course. But the overarching one was bewilderment, he had to admit. His brain simply couldn't process anything else.
"So, you said that?"
"Yes?" Dora raised her arm again but Remus said hurriedly. "Sorry, I meant, well, I don't know!"
Dora stared at him for a moment while Remus tried to gather his thoughts. Then the was a strange noise from Dora. And then his lips twitched. And then a giggle. Then a snort. Another snort. Another giggle. And finally full-blown laughter. Both of them were doubled over and gasping for breath thanks to the force of their laughter. Just how ridiculous were they? Very ridiculous, that's what they were.
"No, seriously," Dora said, wiping at her eyes and still holding her stomach. "What do you think?"
Remus opened and then closed his mouth. Yes, what did he think?
"Nervous," he finally admitted. "Scared."
"Same here," she admitted. "Do you feel happy?"
"I don't know," he answered honestly.
He only knew a little bit of what Lily and James and Alice and Frank went through in the First War when they got pregnant. It wasn't fun. Or easy looking. So much worrying.
"I mean," he picked up, realising how awful that sounded. "I'm happy for you. For us. A child, we'll, it's a child. It's going to be our child."
"Yeah..."
Silence again. Remus didn't know what to think. A child wasn't a bad thing. Their child wouldn't be a bad thing.
"I never thought about having children," he said. "I never said I didn't want them..."
"But you never said you did either," Dora finished for him. "Me too."
Huh. Was this normal? This felt like something they should have discussed before their wedding. But at least they were sort of on the same page here? Was it even a page?
Then Dora linked her fingers with his.
"But we'll go through it together, right?"
He closed his hands over hers.
"Of course."
