Tonks had to be honest with herself, that day was a blur. She didn't know about Remus but she had to figure out how to process this. A baby? She was having a baby? How? What? Oh, this was all so... so much. Yeah, that probably wasn't the best way to describe it but honestly, she couldn't think straight. And she was pretty sure that that was a normal reaction when you were told that your body had decided it wanted to grow a whole other human.
Baby. Her and Remus were having a baby. And they discovered this in her parents' house with Remus rushing around getting Potions for her. Nothing could be normal for them, could it?
They had stuck around for her parents congratulating them but then excused themselves. One, because Tonks had started feeling nauseous again (and that had been a bad idea to apparate with that feeling) and two, to think this over and process it. You couldn't do that with your parents hovering over you. Though, her dad's hovering was useful because, due to him being a Healer meant that he could literally give her a super-concoction of anti-nausea Potions. It was great. They hadn't taken effect yet but she was sure they would be great.
Right now, she was curled up on her bed, Remus having picked around her with blankets and trying to rest. She was tired, being sick did that to you, but her mind was far too busy to settle on anything never mind let her fall asleep. Had it really been just this morning that She had been threatening to douse herself in lavender perfume to get him to stop sniffing her? It had been. That was so weird. It felt like days had passed since then.
Well, there was one thing, the third of August was definitely going to be stuck in her memory. Wow. Just wow.
A mother. Tonks gently touched her stomach, not that there was any external sign of her being pregnant (unless you counted the vomit which was, unfortunately, external). She was going to be a mother. To a baby. A little, itty-bitty baby. Somehow, that didn't really make her feel better. Was that normal? She was supposed to feel elated or something, wasn't she? You always heard about people being so excited, so happy, about being pregnant. But she hadn't felt that yet. She was nervous. She was confused. She was worried. That wasn't normal, was it? This should be something that made her happy and here she was feeling the complete opposite.
Pregnant? Pregnant? No matter how many times she repeated it to herself, it didn't make it feel any more real. It was surreal. She didn't like that feeling.
She had never thought of ever being a mother. It just didn't cross her mind. She had always been so focused on becoming an Auror that she didn't really think of anything else. Which was fine. She was career driven. That was normal. Nothing weird about that.
There was the general assumption that maybe she would get a partner to share her life with and maybe they would get married. But that had always been far off in the future for her. There had never been any sense of urgency. But here she was now. She found the best person in the world to marry and spend her life with. Which was far more amazing than she ever thought it would be.
And she was pregnant. Yep. Tonks was repeating it to herself again. She couldn't help it; it was all she was thinking about.
"Hey, relax," came Remus' soft voice.
Then his hands were on her shoulders and back, rubbing them in an effort to calm her down. She was hyperventilating. Since when had she been hyperventilating?
"Deep breaths, Dora. Deep breaths. Listen to mine."
She did as she was told and slowly, she started to copy him. In. Out. In. Out. Slower and slower.
Her heart rate started to come down and her head was starting to clear, no longer feeling dizzy.
"There we go," Remus said as her breathing basically returned to normal. "You good?"
"I think so."
Who seriously would be good after losing control like that? Not her. But she did feel better.
Remus gave her a worried look and she replied with a small smile. She was good. Or she was going to be good.
"Everything's kind of hitting me at once," she explained.
He nodded knowingly. "Understandable. You need to think about it but you also need to not overthink it."
"Exactly. It's hard."
See? This was so good. Her and Remus were on the same page. They understood each other. Understood each other enough that they both knew that they both needed a bit of space. And then they would talk it out because they had promised to be better at that.
And then another thought struck her. She didn't have any experience with babies! The cousins on her dad's side were all around her age and, well, let's just not mention her mother's side. But still. No babies. No holding of babies or playing with babies. What was she supposed to even do with a baby? She didn't know! She had never ever thought about even liking babies! What if she did something wrong? What if she hurt it? Did something bad? It was easy to mess up a baby, wasn't it?
"Hey, you okay?" She asked, nudging Remus.
He hadn't said or done anything since he calmed her down. Granted, neither had she but usually she could tell what he was thinking. Not so now.
He gave her a tight sort of smile. "Pretty sure I'm meant to be asking you that, Dora. You're the one whose body is literally making a whole other human body."
She scrunched up her nose and gave him a shove. "Don't say it like that, it's creepy."
"That's what's happening, Dora."
"Yeah, well, it's weird."
"Some would say that's what your body is designed to do."
She crossed her arms. "Yeah, well, the human body is weird."
He just raised an eyebrow and looked somewhat amused
"I wonder which one of us it is going to be most like?" She wondered out loud.
Remus went very quiet, probably thinking of all the possible combinations of them their baby could be. Tonks knew that she was. She knew she had no say in the matter but it was kind of interesting to think about it.
Who would the baby look like? What would their personality be like? Like one of them or a quirky little combo? Did babies even have personalities?
See? She didn't know the first thing about babies, how was she supposed to look after one of her own?
Was Remus worrying about all this? He would probably be good at it. He was good at everything, after all.
Speaking of Remus, he hadn't said anything. Like, nothing. Tonks looked over to him only to see him frowning, Deeping in thought.
"Hey, what are you thinking about?" She asked.
She didn't like this quiet. From him or from her. This is something they should be talking about. Right? Getting excited over?
Yes. They were definitely broken. Or just plain odd. Odd sounded better.
Remus gave a great, big sigh.
"Everything," he said, not looking at her. "I'm thinking about everything."
