Oh, wow, it was windy down in Cornwall was Remus' only thought as he appeared at Shell Cottage. That was the last thought he had as excitement welled up inside if him. He had a son. A tiny, little son who was perfect and precious and had he already said perfect?
He couldn't help but bang on the front door, not even thinking how it would sound to the people inside.
"Who is it?" Bill called.
"It is I, Remus John Lupin!" He called over the howling wind. "I am a werewolf, married to Nymphadora Tonks, and you, the Secret-Keeper of Shell Cottage, told me the address and bade me come in an emergency!"
Bill wrenched it open and he absentmindedly thought that maybe he shouldn't have made it sound like an emergency.
He fell over the threshold, unable to contain himself. Huh, is this what Dora felt like? It wasn't pleasant. He was all tangled his travelling cloak and his hair was in his eyes. He straightened up, looked around the room, making sure of who was there, then cried aloud, "It's a boy! We've named him Ted, after Dora's father!"
It was all a bit blunt and sudden but how else was he supposed to announce it? Ted. Little Edward Remus Lupin. Dora had already started calling him Teddy which was perfect, in his opinion.
Hermione shrieked.
"Wha-? Tonks-Tonks has had the baby?"
Isn't that what he had just said?
"Yes, yes, she's had the baby!" shouted Remus excitedly, unable to calm himself down.
He had a son! A son! A part of him and Dora who was just perfect.
All around the table came cries of delight, sighs of relief: Hermione and Fleur both squealed, "Congratulations!" and Ron said, "Blimey, a baby!" as if he had never heard of such a thing before.
There was so much noise. Good noise. Happy noise. It was overwhelming or was that just his emotions that were? They were happy for him. They were all happy for him and Dora! Oh, how wonderful it was to be happy!
"Yes, yes, a boy," said Remus again, who was dazed by his own happiness, he didn't know what else to say so he just stuck with repeating himself.
He strode around the table and hugged Harry; the scene in the basement of Grimmauld Place might never have happened. Here was Harry, one of the most important people in his life who knew exactly how to sort him out. And that was the most important thing right now. It also made him perfect for one particular job and Dora had wholeheartedly agreed with him.
"You'll be godfather?" he said as he released Harry.
That seemed to completely shock the both who je considered his nephew. Why, Remus didn't know. Didn't Harry know just how imprimatur he was to Remus? What he had done for him?
"M-me?" stammered Harry.
He looked remarkably like James when Lily had told him that she liked him. Bewildered, confused, shocked and hopeful all rolled into one.
"You, yes, of course- Dora quite agrees, no one better -"
She had told him that the person who had kicked his arse back to her better get a damn reward and this was perfect. There was no better person to look after their son.
"I- yeah- blimey- "
He could see that Harry felt overwhelmed, astonished, delighted. But there was really no one better for the job, in his opinion. Before he could reassure Harry of that, they got interrupted by Bill, who was hurrying to fetch wine, and Fleur was persuading Remus to join them for a drink.
He couldn't deny that, could he? It was good luck, wet the baby's head and all that.
"I can't stay long, I must get back," said Remus, beaming around at them all He felt years younger than he had ever felt. And he was pretty sure that the only day he had smiled just as much was on his wedding day. "Thank you, thank you, Bill"
Bill had soon filled all of their goblets, they stood and raised them high in a toast. A toast for his son. His son! Could you believe that he had a little baby? A son?
"To Teddy Remus Lupin," said Remus, "a great wizard in the making!"
They all drank to that. Well, everyone except him because Remus didn't think that much of kt got I to his mouth in his excitement. There was certainly a lot of it on his face and down his chin. But that didn't matter!
"'Oo does 'e look like?" Fleur inquired.
"I think he looks like Dora, but she thinks he is like me. Not much hair. It looked black when he was born, but I swear it's turned ginger in the hour since. Probably blond by the time I get back. Andromeda says Tonks's hair started changing colour the day that she was born."
He was more like Dora than him and he couldn't be happier. He had inherited the Metamorphmagus gene! How amazing! Though it looked like he was going to have his mouth. Remus didn't care what Teddy inherited from who because Teddy was here! Here with his colour changing hair and little snuffing noises.
He drained his goblet. Well, the remains, which wasn't a lot after his fuming hands.
"Oh, go on then, just one more," he added, beaming, as Bill made to fill it again.
He had to celebrate, didn't he? The wind buffeted the little cottage and the fire leapt and crackled, and Bill was soon opening another bottle of wine. He got another glass but he found he didn't really want it after his first drink of it. He didn't want to spill it down himself again, he was too excited. Too happy. It felt like his heart was about to jump out of his chest.
Remus' news seemed to have taken them out of themselves, removed them for a while from their state of siege: Tidings of new life were exhilarating. It made Remus want to cheer and jump up and down though of course he did neither of those things. Only the goblin seemed untouched by the suddenly festive atmosphere, and after a while he slunk back to upstairs. Remus didn't think anything of it, not knowing how the Goblin felt about babies. They didn't even know each other, after all.
He tried to tell everyone all the details. How much Teddy weighed, the size of his head? Everything Muriel had told them but he was pretty sure he made no sense and had jumbled up his words.
He had to get back to them. To Teddy and Dora and take them l in and be with his son. He had a son!
"No... no... I really must get back," said Remus at last, declining yet another goblet of wine.
Where was all of this wine coming from? He got to his feet and pulled his traveling cloak back around himself.
"Good-bye, good-bye. I'll try and bring some pictures in a few days' time - they'll all be so glad to know that I've seen you-"
He fastened his cloak and made his farewells, hugging the women and grasping hands with the men, then, still beaming, returned into the wild night.
Back home. Where his family was. Dora. Andromeda. And Teddy. Teddy was going to be there.
