Chapter 17:
Katie's first reaction was to attempt to shut the door in his face, unfortunately he was too quick. His foot making it in the doorway just before she could shut it. Annoyed Katie let out an exasperated noise, throwing her arms up in frustration. Marcus used the opportunity to push himself inside, closing the door behind him. Walking in like he owned the place. He headed over to the kitchen table and set the pizza down, turning back to face her. Katie couldn't help but admire his body, his training was doing wonders. Pinching her arm to help her clear her thoughts she turned to him, glaring.
Her voice broke, but she managed to say, "you need to get out of here." Katie was doing her best to not flip out. Feeling all her anger bubbling inside of her.
Marcus leaned closer, saying, "five minutes that's all I ask." He raised his hands up in surrender. Katie's face was blank, and her eyes were centered on some far-off sight behind him.
Katie was drunk, but she still knew him being there was a terrible idea. "No, get out." With a shake of her head, she walked back into her kitchen putting much needed space between them. Grabbing her glass of wine, with shaky hands. He eyed the glass carefully walking towards her. Only the island counter stood between them. Katie took a sip, nodding her head towards the door. "The door is that way." Setting the wine down on the counter.
"You should drink some water princess" He softly coaxed her.
"Don't call me that!" She yelled almost spilling her wine.
"But I love watching you pretend to hate that nickname" Marcus chuckled smirking. Katie wanted to punch the smirk right off his face. He leaned his body forward doing his best to close the gap between them, resting his palms on the counter. Katie sucked in a breath, admiring his massive muscles as they flexed. Finding herself leaning back to get as much distance as possible. Struggling for control.
"Get out of my apartment." Katie yelled no longer having any patience. Not caring what her neighbors thought. She was either going to hit him at this point or kiss him. Kill him. She meant kill him. Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, she was drunk. That was all it was.
"I want another chance." Marcus belted out. Katie was stunned and was left speechless. Standing there for a while gaping at him, slightly swaying. He continued, "There's no one else for me, Katie. I'll try, whatever it takes." He couldn't lose her. He didn't give a damn about the Death Eaters. "We could run away together, no one would ever find us." He tried to reason with her. Katie shook her head, lips pressed together, and glanced out towards her window. Anywhere but at his face. He held out a hand to her. Studying his callused palm, with a grim sort of hope.
Tears escaped her eyes, and she shook her head fiercely. Why hadn't he asked her this years ago? Why wait all this time?
Katie wrapped her arms around her body, trying to comfort herself. "Every time we do this, I let myself hope just a little bit, and then when you dump me, my heart shatters in on itself just a little bit more each time. Honestly? I'm not sure how much is even left. I need you to let me go, I want to be with Brenton." Katie tried to explain through her tears.
"Katie, there's no one else for me." He said under his breath. Marcus couldn't lose her.
Katie was burning from the inside out. "I don't give a damn! That's not my problem anymore." Taking her glass of wine, she threw it across the apartment, opposite of where Marcus stood. Shattering into millions of pieces, red wine coating the walls and ceiling. "Get out."
"Fine, at the very least, will you wear your mother's necklace that your dad gave you, he said it was important." Marcus tried to reason with her.
Katie saw red. "My dad has some nerve sending you to do his errands of all people. Leave me the hell alone!" Katie yelled, exiting into her bedroom, locking the door behind her. She couldn't look at him anymore. Pressing her back against the door she collapsed to the ground silently crying. She didn't know what was going on, her emotions felt heightened from the alcohol.
The doorknob jiggled, followed by Marcus saying, "princess, open the door."
"Go away." She cried, her voice betraying her. Placing a hand on her thundering heart.
"At least move out of the way so I can kick it down." A déjà vu feeling rushed over her, remembering how in the past that had worked on her.
"Break the door down and I call the cops. Get out of my apartment Marcus." Katie yelled through her tears. She heard him bang something against the door, assuming it was his fist.
He felt sick to his stomach that no matter what he tried, he couldn't fix things between them. "Fuck!" Marcus shouted before storming out of the apartment.
Despite the exhaustion that slammed into her, Katie had been unable to sleep that night. The following morning Brenton was livid when he found out what Marcus had done. Katie agreed to move, even calling her real estate agent to ask him to look for houses for her.
Brenton joined Katie to her follow up appointment with her healer, after they ran some tests and spells on her. The healer explained that the results would take about two weeks, and they would only call her if there was an issue with the results.
As they walked out of the office, Katie glanced up from her feet, seeing Angelina. On the right side of her face, she had a large scab forming. It looked as if her face had been burnt and was in the middle of the healing stage. Her usual shoulder length black hair was cropped into a short bob. Katie assumed it was from the accident, but she still didn't know what happened that night.
"Katie… I… do you have a minute?" She questioned. Dread. Instant dread washed over her. A long time ago she would have done anything for this girl, but now? She just wanted to get away.
"I'm sorry about what happened, but I need to get going." Katie felt tense looking up to Brenton for support. As if sensing her distress, Brenton grasped her hand tightly in his larger callused one, stroking the inside of her palm with his thumb.
"Did you read the letters?" She persisted.
Katie gritted her teeth. "No." Katie replied flatly. "My boyfriend and I really need to get going."
Turning her attention to the tall man behind Katie, she examined his face. "Have we met before?" Angelina questioned Brenton.
"I'm the beater for Puddlemere." He explained as Katie dragged him away from Angelina.
Katie dreamt. Walking through a door, she was met with pitch black. Fumbling in the dark she searched for her wand, anything, but like always her wand was gone. Trying not to panic she attempted the Lumos spell without her wand. She could do this. Katie had months of practice and had done it many times before. This nightmare had made her spend all her free time practicing wandless magic. It scared her to the bones being without a wand against that creature and it had made her do something about it.
A few attempts later Katie held a glowing blue sphere in her palm that lit up the hallway. It was the same stone hallway she always found herself in.
Taking a deep breath, she walked through the twisting passage, knowing it all too well. Descending the stairs, she did her best to focus on her feet, and less about what was to come. Reaching the wooden door, she arrived at the larger room. The room where she would always find Evelyn. It was empty this time, so Katie continued, reaching the next wooden door. She pressed on.
This room was a long endless stone hallway, thousands of doors lined each wall. Each door was different, with unknown symbols on each door. Katie rested her fingers on one of the doors. Was it a language of some kind? If she solved it, would she find the right door to escape?
Katie did her best to memorize the patterns of as many doors as she could, not bothering to open any doors this time. As she walked on, she heard it, the creature. It was banging on one of the doors further down the hallway. Frozen in place she listened to the creature wail and howl from inside. After a while, she slowly crept towards it. She needed to see what symbol was on the door, that way she could avoid it.
Her body shook in fear as she stood in front of the door memorizing it. The door shook violently as the creature tore at the door, as if it knew she was there. Satisfied she memorized it, Katie ran down the hallway, seeing repeats of symbols. Even the same one that marked the creature's door, some were silent, while others weren't. Katie kept running until she saw a symbol that was different from all the rest.
Standing in front of it, she attempted to hear what it was behind. Suddenly there was a deep howl and a heavy crashing, one of the doors down the hallway flew off the hinges. Not wasting a moment, she walked through the door.
Katie's eyes opened. She was breathing erratically. But she was safe in her room.
Katie was tired in her bones, but she gathered her energy to get up and get ready. The healer had called her back about the results, asking her to come in to review them. It was the day of the appointment and she found herself waiting with Evelyn in the small hospital room. Brenton was unable to go as he would be on the pitch all day with Puddlemere, recommending that she take Evelyn. Chatting idly until the healer walked in. "Hello Ms. Bell, wonderful to see you again!" He greeted cheerfully shaking her hand. "And this is?" He questioned Evelyn.
"I'm her best friend, my name is Evelyn." She greeted pleasantly.
"Well, something did come back with your test results."
"Oh no, you have to be mistaken doctor." Evelyn questioned, concerned for Katie.
"Well… er… actually one moment." He started to look over his clipboard going through different pages of doctor's notes, and test results. "That's odd, the test results look completely normal. I'm not sure why my nurse called you in today. So sorry about the confusion. I do recommend you picking up some dreamless sleep to help with the nightmares though." Katie felt relieved after hearing that everything was normal.
Katie hadn't seen her father at all, often dodging his letters. Something she was good it. Finally, after not seeing him for quite some time he showed up at her house, mail in hand.
She still didn't trust him but didn't feel comfortable enough to confront him. Why was she always like this? Never actually standing up for herself and letting herself continue to get hurt. He mentioned that he was dating a woman, and Katie feigned interest the best she could. "Katie is everything okay?" He couldn't help but ask.
It took her a minute to think of what to say. "I'm fine, just a lot of stress with buying my new place, moving, and quidditch. I just have a lot on my plate." She said dismissively.
"You'd tell me if you were mad at me, right?" He questioned her.
"Of course. I'll talk to you later all right?"
Soon April came around, and Katie found herself moving into a lovely two-bedroom home, down a quiet street. Katie had moved all her things from her apartment, but the house was still bare, lacking a lot of furniture. Brenton had been insisting that he help her move the furniture from the storage unit, that way she wasn't wasting extra money.
Katie agreed knowing if she had her way it would sit there for a long time, having become quite the procrastinator these days. Brenton was helping her get away from that, even helping her select the perfect house.
Brenton had brought a few guys from his team over to move all the furniture from the storage and then to the house. Soon her house was filled with furniture, things in the right rooms but not the right placements. So, they spent the rest of the night chatting and moving furniture around, until she was happy with the outcome. The dark leather couches stood out in her living room; a soft grey carpet accentuated the room. With matching glass coffee table and side tables. The gold ornate mirror sat opposite her front door but facing her bedroom.
The mirror was the only thing from one of the main rooms Katie had kept. Everything else she chose were from rooms that were hardly ever used. It helped her to dissociate the furniture from her grandparents. Whatever helps right?
The following week Katie trained every day from dawn to dusk. Her coach pulled her aside at the end of training that night. Letting her know she was going to be starting next game. Katie was excited but confused. No one was sick or injured why would they put her starting? This was an important match.
Katie got her answer later that night when she found out she would be playing against Brenton's team. They were hoping her boyfriend would take it easy on her, and they could take advantage of it. Typical Falmouth Falcon play, she almost felt as if she had joined Slytherin.
The day of the match came, and Katie felt apprehensive. On the pitch, the golden snitch was released along with the two Bludgers. The referee's hands tightened around the Quaffle, eying the players cautiously, trying to detect any foul plans before the game started.
"Let the game begin!" He shouted tossing the Quaffle into the air.
Immediately the opposing teams leaped for the quaffle crashing into each other. Marcus got his hands onto the quaffle first, hurdling down the field he tossed it to James the other chaser on their team. When the opposing team surrounded him, Katie pivoted in a different direction opening herself up for James to pass it to her.
Successfully catching the Quaffle she made her way down the pitch using all her might she hurled it towards Marcus, using his broom he swatted the ball into the goal. Oliver was unable to stop it in time. "Falmouth Falcon's Flint makes the first goal with a great pass from Bell!" The announcer cheered.
Puddlemere in possession of the Quaffle made their way down the field, the chaser holding the quaffle was met with a strong blow from a bludger. Dropping the ball, Marcus easily caught it as it dropped. Making his way across the pitch he tried to score again, Oliver successfully blocking this time. "Wood magnificently stopped Flint's shot" The announcer called out.
Throwing it to a Puddlemere chaser, James ended up being able to intercept it. Tossing it to Marcus, who in turn scored yet again for their team. "Flint scored again! Twenty nothing, Falmouth Falcons in the lead." The announcer cheered.
Katie scored the next point from her team after James set her up with a perfect shot, confusing Oliver. Feeling more confident she rushed after the Quaffle. Marcus and Katie found themselves both trailing behind the chaser with the quaffle. A fellow Puddlemere player made his way to fly up next to them but ended up being hit with a bludger. He struggled to regain balance, falling behind them.
The chaser with the Quaffle noticed he was being followed and struggled to find someone to pass it to. When he did go to pass, Katie intercepted, flying off in the other direction. The same Puddlemere chaser was hot on her heels, eventually catching up to her and slamming into her. The Puddlemere chaser backed away as a bludger approached them, hit by Brenton. It was flying directly at Katie, using the Quaffle she blocked the bludger sending it straight into the Puddlemere chaser next to her. It had been a move she'd practiced for years and years, it was as easy to her as breathing. When she started to get surrounded, she tossed the ball to Marcus who was cutting across from her horizontally. Puddlemere struggled to change directions. Katie raced to the goals eventually catching the ball from Marcus and scoring in the left goal. "40 nothing, Falmouth Falcons still in the lead!" The announcers voice boomed through the stadium.
Katie again chased after the Quaffle, Puddlemere holding onto it for dear life. Only to be met with a Bludger just barely missing her face. Looking in the direction it came from she saw Brenton, mouthing out sorry. She knew she couldn't ask him to not hit her, it was the sport, but man his bludgers had some power behind them. There was no doubt in her mind that she would have knocked her off her broom if it had hit her. "Puddlemere scores!"
Brenton successfully hit her five times in the next thirty minutes of the game, and there were too many times to count when he almost hit her. She could feel the bruises forming on her body, making her feel sluggish.
Marcus threw a glance at Katie, breathing hard but evenly. He watched another bludger hit her in the side, her broom slightly dropping in altitude as she tried to recover. He knew he needed to do something. A dark smile formed on his face. He flew away from the Quaffle.
Looking around the field she noticed Marcus talking with the two beaters on their team. Only flying away when they both nodded their heads. The game continued, and Katie noted the beaters on her team targeting only the Puddlemere beaters. Two bludgers hit Brenton one after another, with two sickening cracks, breaking some of Brenton's ribs. Well then. That's one way to do it.
"Falmouth Falcons score! 120 to 60, Falmouth Falcons in the lead" The announcer shouted, the crowd cheering.
She blinked, concentrating on her breathing, trying her best not to worry about Brenton. Hands gripping her broom tightly, she flew back into the game. Scoring a few more times before their seeker caught the snitch, winning the game for the Falmouth Falcons.
After the match the team headed to a local pub to celebrate, it was required for the team to show up when they won a match. Unfortunately, because the match was against Puddlemere, Brenton was not allowed to come. Instead, Evelyn met Katie at the bar, that way she had some sort of back up.
Katie within the first hour ended getting drunk, Evelyn doing her best to keep her friend in check. She sat as far away from Marcus as she could in the bar. Eventually the Beaters on the team, Albert and Henry approached Katie and Evelyn. Henry was heavily flirting with Evelyn eventually convincing her to join him for a smoke outside. Katie reassured her she'd be fine and that she didn't want to stand in the cold.
It couldn't have been more than a minute later that she wished she had gone with Evelyn when she heard someone walk up behind her. Knowing it was him, without even looking, Marcus's cologne gave it away.
Katie's body tensed when his hands flattened on her hips, his warm breath on the side of her neck. Goose bumps ran up and down her legs and arms. Resting his face in the crook of her neck. "I've missed you." He murmured into her skin. The vibrations in his chest rumbling against her back. She instantly regretted her decision of not being clear headed when her body betrayed her and relaxed in his embrace. His fingers started to work their way up her body. She began leaning into his touch, savoring the feel of his body pressed up against hers.
Katie couldn't help when she let out a low groan. His mouth connected with her neck, kissing from her ear down to her shoulder. She twisted slightly to peer up at him, his beautiful green eyes filled with warmth. "Marcus…"
"Flint, you get off her right now." Evelyn angerly chided him.
Immediately he pulled away as if she were on fire, the warmth that had clung to her gone. Evelyn grabbed Katie's wrist tightly dragging her away. Oh Merlin no. What had she done?
"Sorry I left you alone, I'm pretty sure he asked that beater to distract me." Evelyn apologized as she tugged Katie's arm, continuing to pull her away from Marcus and out of the bar. "Why do you even give him the time of day, next time just walk away when he speaks to you."
"That's probably a better idea" Katie agreed softly, still shaken up.
"Katie, you don't love him anymore. Just stay away from him, and don't talk to him. Okay? You finally got over that asshole, don't do it to yourself again." Evelyn made her promise.
The following day Katie headed into practice, after getting ready in the locker rooms, she made her way onto the pitch. She started to stretch, loosening her body. She had a massive hangover from the night before. Closing her eyes, she stretched by grabbing each foot one at a time with her hands. Eyes still closed; she heard the grass crunching from behind her.
"Katie, can we talk about last night." Marcus questioned her. She opened her eyes, not even looking in his direction. Squaring her shoulders and lifting her chin up, she got up and onto her broom, flying off. Marcus stood on the pitch, unsure of what to do. Only deciding to wait until after practice when the rest of the team walked onto the pitch.
Practice was uneventful, going over plays until they were perfect, but it went on for hours. Katie felt sore, her feet felt heavy when she landed to the ground. Even staggering slightly, only just catching her footing in time. A shower was long awaited, soothing her body, and relieving her stiffness. When she got out, she quickly got dressed in black sweatpants and a plain white T-shirt. A knock on the locker room door had her snap her head in that direction. "Decent?" A muffled voice came from the other side.
"Yeah" she called out unsure if it was the coach. When Marcus walked in, Katie let out a huff grabbing her belongings and heading to the door. "Katie, please talk to me."
Ignoring him she attempted to walk past, only to be pushed gently against the wall. His powerful arms on either side of her head, not touching her. No matter what he did, she wouldn't even look at him. "Katie, just look at me." Her eyes didn't even flicker up at him. She shoved past him moving to the door so quick, he was too stunned to stop her. This was new. She always had a sassy comeback for him, but not this time.
Evelyn showed up at her house that night with Chinese food, wine, and a scary movie.
Katie was setting up all the food on the coffee table in the living room, to get ready for the movie. Going into the kitchen to see what was taking Evelyn so long to pour the wine. As she entered the kitchen Evelyn bumped into her spilling wine all over the tiled kitchen floor, and Katie. "Oh no" Katie groaned. She was covered in red wine, her clothing most likely ruined.
"I'm so sorry! Go take a shower and I'll clean the kitchen." Evelyn apologized grabbing paper towels and cleaner.
Agreeing, Katie headed into her room rummaging through her drawers looking for clothes. When she had her clothing, she set them in the bathroom. Katie exited the bathroom to grab a towel, having a clear view of her living room which Evelyn walked into looking at Katie. "I'm so sorry, I owe you pajamas"
"Don't worry about it, I'll be out in a bit." Closing the door, she started the shower up, waiting for it to heat up. It wasn't long before she was out and dressed in a new set of pajamas, leaving the stained ones in the sink to soak.
Before the movie was over, Evelyn was fast asleep on the couch. Attempting to wake her up, Evelyn rolled over saying she was sleeping over. Katie was surprised, normally Evelyn didn't sleep over, as she had work early in the morning. Katie laughed figuring her friend was drunk, throwing a blanket over Evelyn, she headed into her room. Crawling into her bed, not long after, she too was asleep.
Evelyn left early the next morning for work leaving Katie to clean up the mess from the night before. Throwing away all the trash, Katie got to work on the dishes. Soon moving on to wiping down surfaces. When she reached her gold ornate mirror, she noticed fingerprints all over the glass. Using a cleaner she scrubbed the mirror, making sure not to leave any streaks. Feeling satisfied, she finished the house off by vacuuming and mopping.
Though Marcus didn't want to admit it, Terrence was his last hope. Marcus found himself pacing his apartment in anticipation of his friend's arrival. When he finally arrived, Marcus didn't even let him wipe off the soot before he bombarded his friend with questions.
"Jeez give me a minute, would you?" Terrence exclaimed wiping away the soot from his navy-blue sports jacket. Terrence took a seat on Marcus's sofa; taking a deep breath he faced his friend. "So, from what I heard, they know she's no longer doing missions for the Order of the Phoenix. They were using her for intel, but now they are using her for something else, some plan. That is why they didn't want you to go near her. From what I heard you aren't high enough clearance, which is why they didn't tell you anything, and gave you instructions to stay away from her."
"What kind of plan? Is she aware she's part of the plan?" Marcus questioned.
"I don't know the plan, from what I know they either want something from her or need her to do something. The details were fuzzy, I'm sorry. All I know is it has something to do with a promise her grandfather made with the dark lord" Terrence explained.
"I wonder what it is. Do you know when it's happening?" Marcus persisted.
"June, early July, I'm not certain on the date."
"No problem, just need to tail her twenty-four hours a day for a month and a half, no big deal." Marcus realized how hard that would be without her speaking to him. "Did you find anything out, about that guy Brenton Allen?"
May rolled around faster than Katie expected. Katie found herself sitting at home on her day off. The night before Brenton had taken her out and they had both gotten very drunk, both passing out on the couch. Eventually Brenton carried her to her bed before he left. Waking up Katie had a massive hangover. Deciding to take a shower and some medicine to get rid of the headache, chasing it down with a water bottle.
Tomorrow was her last practice day before their match, against her old team The Holyhead Harpies. The last couple of weeks had been rough on Katie, she hadn't heard from Evelyn at all. She had given some lame excuse about going away with her family, but she hadn't heard anything from her best friend. Katie was starting to get worried.
Katie stifled a yawn. A weight pressed down on her eyelids. She was finally able to sleep, the nightmares no longer torturing her. Unsure of what to do Katie cleaned her house, doing her normal routines of wiping everything down, dishes, and mopping. When she went to wipe off her mirror, she noticed something red on the frame of the mirror. Dried blood? Inspecting her hands, she looked for a cut of any kind, finding a small cut on her palm. Figuring she must have cut her hand when she was doing dishes earlier. Katie went into her bathroom grabbing a bandage for her hand.
When she was all finished cleaning the house, she found herself biting her lip, eyes drifting to the box that held all the letters that had been left ignored. She needed to get rid of it. This wasn't healthy her holding onto all this grief for so long. It needed to be done. Either read them or throw them away. Deciding to pick one letter and see how she felt. If it upset her too much, she would throw them away. Picking up a heavier envelope, she pulled out a ring with a moonstone, fastened in the middle of a gold setting. What was with everyone giving her moonstones? Her father had done the same thing.
"Dear Katie,
I'm not sure if you even read these anymore, but we both keep sending them. Hoping that just maybe we can get through to you. There's so much to tell you. First off, I miss you so much. I really hope you read this letter with an open mind. Know that I never meant to hurt you in any way. I'm so sorry for not stopping you that night in the dark forest. I wanted so badly to figure out what was going on with you, that I risked your life. I will always regret that. You need to know the truth though.
Angelina and I figured out a spell that reveals memories that have been hidden by magic. You need to understand that we aren't lying to you. Evelyn is using a spell to control people. The night of my birthday Evelyn approached me and said, "Katie's back with Marcus doesn't that make you so mad, why don't you go tell her in five minutes."
Katie, I was happy you were with Marcus, I never would have said any of those things without being under a spell. I don't know what kind of spell it was, but what we have figured out is she can persuade people to do things by simply telling them. I'm thinking she has a special ability that allows her to do it.
Please believe us, we can even do the spell for you, that way you can see if she's done it to you. I'm sure something she's said must have stood out.
Katie in the package I added a moonstone, we enchanted it. It should help promote clarity of the mind and help with night terrors. I'm sure you had them as well. She shouldn't be able to persuade you to do anything if you are wearing it.
Please Katie there's so much more that you need to hear. Most of it from Angelina, I can't tell you, her story, just read her letters as well.
I still love you,
Forever your friend,
Alicia.
Katie's hands were shaking. She didn't know what to think. Could it be true? If she were to believe this, then that meant another person betrayed her. Why did she continue to let the wrong people in her life? Was she a magnetic for bad energy or something? If this was true, that meant she held a grudge against them for no reason. She had pushed away two of her once closest friends. Taking another deep breath, this time she grabbed a letter from Angelina and tore it open carefully.
Katie,
I'm sorry. I am so sorry, for everything mean thing I ever said to you.
I hope you will give me the chance to explain. It took me hitting rock bottom to figure out what was going on with me. I was drinking every night and almost died. Alicia found me passed out drunk in the bathroom choking on my own vomit and got me to a healer in time. I'm not looking for your pity, I just need to explain to you, what happened back then.
I was told I had extensive damage to my brain. Back when we were in school, I had the Imperius curse cast on me several times, along with whatever spell Evelyn cast on me. Any mind or emotional altering spell react terribly with alcohol. The only time I felt any kind of emotion, was when I was drinking. The only time I could fight the magic was when I was intoxicated. I'm not saying it makes it right, but that's why I drank so much.
Katie, do you remember that time I asked how Paris was and you denied remembering anything. The healers helped me recover most of my memories. Katie I was there with you. You invited me to come join you in Paris, Alicia was stuck with her family for her birthday, so we decided not to tell her. You said you were bored, and your family was gone from the hotel you were staying at.
When I got there your grandfather was livid, he had no idea how you were able to owl anyone under the Imperius curse. That's why he called Evelyn there to put another spell on you. I'm not sure what it is exactly but she has a special ability to make people do what she tells them to.
A bunch of death eaters ended up showing up with her. I couldn't see their faces because of the masks but one of them knew me. Told them I was dating George, that's when they got the idea to use me as well.
Evelyn told me my mission was to watch George and his family and report back to them. This went on for a full school year. With all the drinking I did back then my emotions were crazy, I didn't know what was going on. I wanted to be with George but at the same time I didn't, it was as if I was trying to resist whatever Evelyn did to me. That's when I broke up with him. When your father found out they redid the spell, which caused even more damage. That's why I snapped at you so much back then.
I know nothing I can ever say will make things right, but I hope you understand, I wasn't myself. My memories are coming back one at a time, seeing faces or hearing stories helps with the recollection. I stopped drinking, and I go to weekly meetings now. Ten months of sobriety today.
Katie before I finish this, I need to warn you. Back when we were in Paris, I saw You-know-who talking with your grandfather, I don't remember the whole conversation, but they were making a deal. I've been hearing a lot of rumors from George lately; they say Voldemort never collected the debt before your grandfather died. You need to be careful. Please owl me when you get this.
Love,
Angelina.
Despite her attempts to keep her breathing even, Katie gasped for air. Hot tears streaming down her face. Hating that she was getting so emotional over these letters, but she read every single one. A lot of the letters said the same thing, just reworded. Most were apologies and stories about their lives.
This changed so much. Was this why Evelyn hadn't responded to any of her letters? Katie hated the fact she was doubting her best friend. They had known each other for years, there was no way she was staged into her life by Voldemort. Right? Unless he took advantage of their friendship and inserted her back into Katie's life. Does that mean that her father is innocent? Was Evelyn the one who leaked the information in that parcel? No there's no way she would have had to came by the Floo, and Katie would have woken up to that. Right? Did Evelyn steal a key to her apartment?
Why did Evelyn disappear? Did she already get what she needed from Katie? What could it have been? She knew at some point she'd need to search her house to see if anything was missing. Could she have found it the night Evelyn had slept over? That was the last time Katie could recall seeing her.
Katie had so many questions, so many things to think about, but knowing what she had to do first. Going into her nightstand she pulled out her mother's necklace, finally putting it on. Did her dad know what it did? Was this one enchanted? Not sure, Katie grabbed the ring, slipping it onto her middle finger.
Using the Floo she headed to St. Mungo's. She ended up waiting for hours, as she didn't have an appointment. Finally, the healer from her previous visit came into her room, confused. "Is the dreamless sleep not helping you?" He questioned her.
"Can you go over my results again, please." Katie begged.
The healer eyed her curiously, before looking down at her chart shuffling through the lab results. "Everything is normal."
"Can you ask another doctor to look at it then, just to be sure." Katie pleaded.
"Let me see what I can do." The healer said, obviously annoyed.

Katie was in shock. The doctor's voices became muffled.
