Chapter Two: The Academy

"Got everything?"

"Yeah."

The boy who'd just spoken was roughly a head shorter than the man standing before him, but both seemed to stand tall at the same time. The shorter of the two is outfitted in black combat trousers and boots on the bottom half and a white, sleeveless trench-coat over a black wife beater. His weapons, dual katana, are stored inside twin scabbards strapped to the young man's back and the final piece of the look are fingerless gloves studded with metal on each of the knuckles of his fingers. His dark cerulean pools are calm almost to the point of being dulled and his dark hair save for the one electric blue lock hanging down over his right eye swayed gently in the afternoon breeze.

"You'll be alright, Beacon's a little different from training with me, but they'll set you right. Teach you things that I won't be able to. Fresh perspective and different teachers are good when you want to expand on the knowledge you've already got. Well, I'd better not hold you back any longer. Good luck, Jett."

"I'll keep in touch, Sky."

The taller of the two extended his hand and the shorter clasped it firmly, then without exchanging another word, they both turned and walked off in their own directions. The shorter toward the airship and the taller to the exit of the station. Jett's attention was pulled in all sorts of directions, in the attempt to discover more of the sorts of students coming to the Academy he felt this was a natural process. Since he was going to be spending the next four years with everyone here, he felt it somewhat important. So focused on his thoughts, Jett wasn't paying full attention to his direct surroundings and...

Crash!

The collision had happened in such a way that Jett had been powerless to stop it. He and the individual he'd crashed into had both of them thrown to the ground.

"Ow," the girl mumbled rubbing her head gently. Her dark hair was stylishly tied back into twin pig-tails, held in place by a dark amethyst bow at the top end of either tail. Her crimson eyes were narrowed, aimed in Jett's direction and practically glowing in anger.

"Watch where you're going!" she exclaimed, pointing a finger at him. The arm was covered by a sleeve missing the shoulder piece that trailed down into a narrow piece held against the girl's finger by a small golden ring. Upon the back of this sleeve was a circular piece of gold filled with a strange amethyst jewel, "I ended up on the ground because of you, jerk!"

"Well," Jett threw back at her, "Maybe if you had of been watching where you were going then you could've avoided colliding into me and we wouldn't have ended up on the ground either!"

"How does that make any sense!? Ugh," The girl quickly moved to stand back up and glared hatefully at Jatt, who was still placed firmly on the ground and didn't look in any hurry to be standing up again, without another word, she turned on heel and stormed off.

"Not even five minutes in and I already wish I'd talked my brother out of convincing me to come here. At least it can't any worse, right?"

"The Airship will be leaving in five minutes."

"Five minutes, huh? Better finish getting on board."

Jett pulled himself to his feet, and after stretching out a little, he turned toward the entrance of the airship, hopng that he'd find a place among the passengers, passengers who, preferably, weren't like that crazy girl he'd quite literally crashed into on the outside of the airship.

"Alright then, looks like you two are off now."

Joan turned her head back to look at her father and gave a broad smile, "You don't have to be over-excited for us, mother."

"It's just going to be dfferent not having the both of you home, that's all."

Jaune smiled at his mother, then stepped down off the platform having just loaded his luggage on-board. He moved back to where the family was standing and hugged her, "It will be weird, but don't worry! I'm sure with all the others still at home it'll be as loud as it always is! Maybe it's me who has the worst punishment of all, dealing with Joan on a regular basis."

"Hey!" Joan exclaimed at the playful jab toward her, "Don't you mean I'm the victim who has to deal with an annoying older brother who likes to tease me mercilessly?"

"Whatever do you mean?" Jaune said, feigning innocence.

"You'd both better be nice to each other," Their mother warned, "I don't want to hear about any fights unless it's in combat class, or in official capacity, got it?"

The twins sighed in unsion, "Yes, mom."

Jaune had expected this lecture on his mom's part. Jaune and Joan were more inclined to push each other. They were everything to each other. Best-friends, confidants, rivals. That was the benefit of having a twin. You could always count on the other to try and bring out the best version of yourself. The unfortunate thing in Jaune and Joan's situation was that the two of them tended to do that to the extreme and bring out the absolute worst out in each other in terms of their anger and things like it. Too much of a good thing, their father had once said.

"The Airship will be leaving in three minutes."

"We'd better get on board," Joan said. She quickly ran down the ramp and gave her mother a fleeting hug, wished the rest of her family goodbye then charged off into the airship like a child hyped up on several different forms of sugar. Jaune shook his head at his sister's antics but turned and waved to his family, then followed up the ramp behind her. If nothing else, this year would prove to be interesting. Once inside the airship, Jaune decided against following in the same direction that his sister went. They were close, but he thought a little distance might do the both of them some good. Besides, it would also be in his best interest to try and get somewhere stable, he'd taken nausea pills to try and keep his motion sickness under control but they only eased the discomfort rather than handle the situation entirely so he was going to need to be somewhere that the turbulence if they experienced any had a minimal effect on him.

This desire of Jaune's had placed him near the middle of the ship, where things were usually less to deal with than the front of the back directly. This section wasn't as full as he thought it was going to be, but then again, Beacon's acceptance criteria was rather strict so the amount of students that qualified for even beginning their time at the Academy would be particularly slim.

"I can't believe my baby sister is going to Beacon with me!"

"Eyurck! Yang! Let me go!"

Of course it was just his luck that he'd ended up in the part of the Airship that was going to be the most exuberant. He did note that aside from the two sisters, the only other one in this compartment was another individual whom was the very definition of so silent it could be seen as them trying to appear invisible so maybe it wouldn't be so-

"What the hell are you looking at?"

Oh no. This was not a good start to the trip.

"Nothing, please ignore me."

"I was," the stranger interrupted, "So maybe you should consider ignoring me."

"R-right, sorry! heh!"

"Wonder what's got them all worked up?"

Jaune turned his head enough to witness the blond girl who'd been messing with her sister only a moment ago walk up beside him and offer what he interpreted to be a reassuring smile, "That guy's been like that since we got here, it's a little strange. I'm Yang."

"Jaune Arc."

"WAIT-"

A howling sound of rapid wind broke out and Jaune found himself now on the receiving end of a death-grip from Yang's sister, who was also gazing up at him with practical stars in her eyes, "You wouldn't happen to be Jaune Arc, would you!?"

"Er, yeah. How do you know me?"

"Well, I don't know you," the girl rambled excitedly, "But I know all about you. You and your sister are legendary on the tag-team circuit in Hunter Tournaments. Your record is unblemished in duos and you've even won a singles tournament while your sister has placed runner-up in that same tournament though you both prefer to compete together rather than as opposition!"

Jaune was at a complete loss for words, but luckily Yang had stepped in, peeling Ruby off the petrified young man. She fixed her sister with a small glare, "I'm sure Jaune would appreciate it not being jumped all over by someone he doesn't know, Ruby."

Ruby's silver eyes widened in embarrassment and she tugged her hood up over her face, curling into it as if she were in the attempt of trying to use it to teleport herself into any situation but this one, "I'm sorry. That was super awkward and I'm really-"

"Hey," Jaune tried softly, "Don't worry about it, I knew the tournament stuff had reach on an international level, but this is still a little bit surprising. Can we just treat me as if I'm another student here? I'd appreciate that a lot. Maybe we could try being friends instead?"

"S-sure, I'm Ruby."

The girl slowly drew her hood back down to offer a smile to the blond boy who nodded, "I'm Jaune. It's nice to meet you both."

"Can you three please be quiet!?" The strangely quiet individual on the other side of the Airship Compartment complained.

"You can always fnd somewhere else to sit!" Yang snapped. The blond girl slowly moved to her sister's side and the girls' and Jaune's attention is drawn to the 2-D animated newscast on Vale News Network playing nearby, talking about the robbery and showing Roman's mug shot.

"The Robbery was led by nefarious criminal Roman Torchwick, who continues to evade authorities. If you have any information on his whereabouts, please contact the Vale Police Department. Back to you, Lisa."

The mugshot changes to Lisa Lavender, with a photo of animal-eared demonstrators holding signs saying "WE ARE NOT ANIMALS!" followed by an image of the logo of a growling red wolf's head with three scratch marks, "Thank you, Cyril. In other news, this Saturday's Faunus Civil Rights protest turned dark when members of the White Fang disrupted the ceremony. The once peaceful organization has now disrupted..."

The news feed is cut off as a hologram of a a middle-aged woman that has very light-blonde hair tied back in a bun with a curl hanging down the right side of her face. Her eyes are bright green and she wears thin ovular glasses. She has dangling teal earrings that match the hanging pendant on her collar. Her outfit consisted of. a white long-sleeved, pleated top that has a wide keyhole neckline and gauntlet cuffs that flare in pleats at the wrist. Her lower body is covered by a black high-waisted pencil skirt with bronze buttons and black-brown stockings.

"Hello and welcome to Beacon," she said.

"Who's that?" Yang asked Ruby.

"My name is Glynda Goodwitch."

"Oh."

"You are among a privileged few who have received the honor of being selected to attend this prestigious academy!" Goodwitch continued, "Our world is experiencing an incredible time of peace, and as future Huntsmen and Huntresses, it is your duty to uphold it. You have demonstrated the courage needed for such a task, and now it is our turn to provide you with the knowledge and the training to protect our world."

Following this announcement the hologram, several people aboard the airship let out cries of surprise and rushed to the glass on either side of the airship trying to get a better glimpse of the view they were all experiencing. Ruby, among the excited students rushed over to the window closest to her and exclaimed happily, "Oh, wow! Look, you can see Signal from up here! I guess home isn't too far after all!"

"Beacon's our home, now," Yang corrected her sister, still wearing the same smile from before. Though she had to admit her sister's excitement at witnessing the school for the first time was something she herself was sharing in during this moment. Jaune stood a little ways off from the girls, smiling at the approaching Academy. Though he'd made a point to have separated from what his sister was doing he couldn't help but wonder how she'd gotten on with the whole trip.

Joan was a little annoyed at first that her brother had clearly abandoned her and gone his own way, but she had, in the minutes that had passed come to terms with the fact that her brother would need to make his own friends and she herself would need to in the chance that the two of them ended up on different teams. Though Joan hoped that this was not the case, she really had no say in anything tha would happen going forward and could only do her best to make sure that she was prepared as best as she could be should teams not work out entirely in their favor.

"HEEEEEEELLOOO!"

"Nora, please!"
