Sam painstakingly skimmed the last microfiche of deed records. His trained eyes searched the records for the land's past history: no Indian burial grounds, or battles, or strange deaths had occurred on it since the early 1800's. His research done, he had fifteen minutes before meeting Dean at the library's entrance.
Sam rose, heading for the nearest library computer. He quickly pulled up the Stanford University website. Miss Fredricks and Mr. Peters, his junior math and history teachers, had agreed to write letters of recommendation for him. Sam printed off the application, taking his first step towards a normal life.
