The darker-than-usual country backyard took the four-year-old by surprise. "It's scary."
Sam could almost taste his son's fear. "Don't—" he started. Of course you should be afraid of the dark!
Picking up Dean, he walked to the Adirondack chair he'd positioned for lunar eclipse watching. Sam sat down, settling the boy in his lap. "Dean-o, I'll always protect you from anything hiding in the dark." Then he pointed to the North Star. "That's your Uncle Dean. He's always watching over y—watching over us."
Ruffling his son's hair, Sam turned toward the reddening moon. "Now, let's watch that eclipse."
A/N: While inspired by the recent eclipse, this drabble is set in 2025, when there will be two lunar eclipses for Sam and Dean-o to enjoy.
