Welcome back everyone! Before we begin Chapter 6 I must apologise to you all. It should not have taken me this long for this chapter to be released. I have found myself recently physically and mentally worn down by my studies, and with only about 8 weeks left, it's only gotten more stressful.

I have worked on this chapter whenever I could, wanting it to be the best chapter it can be; taking all-nighters just to catch up on lost time. You all deserve the best story I can supply especially after what happened to my last Lion King story. I owe you all on that front.

I wish to stress this is not an excuse. Far from it. This to show how much I care for this story and its quality. I'm angry at myself for how long this took. If some of you are angry I understand.

Whenever I write a new chapter I try to keep a consistent writing schedule and release date but as of late this has not been possible. But this slowdown means nothing. I will pour my heart and soul into this project making it the best it can be. This story will be finished. You all have my word.

With that said. Let's start Chapter 6! No more delays!

Chapter 6: The Pain of the Past

With a new day dawning across the Pride Lands, Simba's pride was beginning to waken from their slumber with the king himself being the first. His ears twitched as soft groans left his muzzle. An exhausted yawn rolled from his throat; his weak body struggling to stand. Treading past his subjects, Simba lagged his paws against the dirt and dust.

Catching a glimpse of the ascending sun made the king rapidly blink his eyes to get used to his brighter surroundings. With each paw step, the king's body wobbled tenderly. His eyes were heavy and a deep yawn broke free from Simba's lips.

The thoughts of the day prior suddenly flooded his mind. The doubt of whether he should trust Matthew or not. The fear of making the wrong choice that could decide the fate of his whole pride. The heavy weight of the lives of those he loves on his heart.

"No…" He sighed with a laboured breath, as if struggling to breath from the stress. "I… I can't…" He felt so suffocated on top of Pride Rock. He needed some room to breathe. Leaving Pride Rock, the king patrolled the surrounding area. As he passed some animals, they greeted the king with gentle smiles and bows. Some even wished him a good morning. But when his back was turned, they whispered between themselves on how terrible the king looked.

The king reached the waterhole and began to drink, feeling the cool water flow down his throat; each gulp refreshing his mentally tired body. Shuddering his body, a little from a stray frigid wind, Simba slowly retraced his steps back towards Pride Rock. He wanted to find somewhere calm and quiet to lay his throbbing head, the thought relaxing Simba's body.

Reaching Pride Rock, the king started to climb back up those steps, each one becoming heavier. His legs wobbled before he reached the top. A nice, shaded part of the clifftop by the den's entrance caught the king's eye. Sighing with relief, Simba walked and settled down, resting his head on his paws.

His eyes closed, allowing his mind to start drifting off. Some extra time resting in the cool morning air never hurt anyone. Despite being in the open, Simba still felt safe by the den's entrance. If there was any trouble, his pride would be right there.

As his body relaxed and those tired muscles softened, feeling the cool air flow past. The king's ears wiggled softly to the rhythms of the land around him. Time felt as if it was slowing down. His mind began to slowly drift off now. His breath was calming…

"Sire? Sire!" A loud shrill voice filled the air, breaking the silence like a hot knife through butter. Simba's back fur stood up on end as he jumped into the air in fright. So much for trying to get more rest

Flying in from the distance was his major-domo hornbill Zazu. Simba would notice that blue body and bright orange beak anywhere. "Sire? Are you ready for the morning report?" Zazu chirped as he landed in front to take a bow.

Simba, with immense mental force, nodded holding back a slight yawn. He shook the sleepiness from his body. He wasn't gonna get any sleep now at this point.

"Of course. Lead the way Zazu. We can talk about it on the morning patrol. Although do not shout so loud. The others are still sleeping."

Zazu nodded and took flight after a short flap of his wings. "Ah yes. I am most terribly sorry, sire. You looked like you were sleeping so I didn't know if you heard me. I will make note to not make the same mistake in the future."

"That's quite alright. Let's not waste any more time." Simba roared out a yawn once more, once again showing his weariness.

"Are you alright, sire? You look exhausted. Did you not get enough sleep?" Zazu queried concerningly. "Perhaps you should maybe get some more rest. I can always return later."

Simba shook his head hastily. "Oh no Zazu. That won't be necessary. While I did indeed not sleep very well. The morning report is especially important. We should continue." The king took on a brave face, putting the priorities of being king over his own well-being.

Silence fell upon the two apart from the flapping of Zazu's wings and Simba's breathing and slight yawning on occasion before the hornbill spoke. "O… Of course, but please rest up once we're done here, sire. I hope you are not falling unwell."

Simba managed to let out a deep chuckle, shaking his head softly with a smile. "I am alright, Zazu. Do not worry about me. Let us continue with the morning report."

Zazu, hiding the deep guilt and worry for the king's safety, nodded and began to lead Simba throughout the Pride Lands, beginning to go through the prominent problems that had arisen. Zebras fighting over trees for shade, crocodiles arguing for the water in lakes, and the sighting of a man-cub..

"Wait!? Man-cub!?" Simba suddenly almost choked on his saliva, causing Zazu to pause. Colour dropped from his face as Zazu mentioned the human. The face of pure panic and fear on Matthew's face came to the full front of the lion king's mind. Simba bit down on his bottom lip as if holding back tears.

"W… Well, yes, sire. There have been many sightings of a small man-cub in the Pride Lands near the waterhole. They're all terrified of its presence. An overwhelming majority would like it to be removed at once."

Simba's eyes drew to the ground, his voice heavy with sadness. "And what of the minority? What do they say on the matter?" Simba asked, hiding the emotions ready to burst.

"Well, they would like the man-cub to stay, if it doesn't get into any trouble and no one is hurt. After all, it is still young." Zazu answered, flying ahead for a moment until he realised Simba wasn't moving. He turned to the lack of paw steps behind him. The major-domo turned against some trees that blew in the wind.

"Sire..? Is everything alright?" Zazu worriedly flew up to him in a panic, wondering if he had crossed a line he did not know existed. He flinched at the thought of potentially being replaced at what he had done. "S… Sire, I'm sorry if I have said too much… If I am to be replaced then just say the word."

"Nonsense… You are not to be replaced, Zazu. Let them know I am already dealing with the situation at hand. They do not need to get involved. It will be best for everyone." Simba said, walking past the bird now at his paw. "Now then, continue on with the report."

"Y… Yes… Of course…" Zazu released a pent up sigh of relief and took to the skies once more, catching up to the lion as he continued the report.

Matthew was sleeping peacefully in Kovu's paws, his body curled up tightly in the lion's fur. The boy's head was resting under Kovu's, leaning in on occasion drawing a deep loving smile from the lion's muzzle.

Ever since the situation with Simba, Kovu had taken more priorities to protect Matthew. He watched him closely, never letting the human child out of his sight. When it was time to put the little one to bed, Kovu brought him even deeper into the den, hoping the darkness of the cave would be enough protection. Hiding Matthew in his fur would hopefully hide the human's scent too.

Small beads blossomed in the corner of Kovu's eyes as the memories of Simba intimidating Matthew returned in the form of a nightmare. The look of horror on Matthew's face. The loud wails of his cries. That sight would be burned into his memory for a long time. He wanted Matthew to be safe. To protect this innocent little one who had lost so much. Was that too much to ask?

That horrifying scene on repeat. Once Simba began walking away it seemed to rewind like a movie to the very beginning before restarting once again. But with each playthrough it got more disturbing. The normally saddened look on Simba's face becomes gradually malicious and cruel. The tone in the king's voice growing in intensity and dark.

Simba would get closer to the child, taunting him about his parents. How he would never see them again. How he would never be welcome at Pride Rock. The bright sky darkened with heavy clouds, the air growing heavier. Simba would slowly reach further and further to the child with his paw; claws extended and glistening. The king let out a booming roaring laughter which echoed as Kovu awoke startled.

Panting heavily and eyes in shock, he looked around the cave in panic for Simba but saw nothing. Kovu felt movement in his paws and gazed down, in relief to see Matthew snuggling close, hugging the lion's neck. Feeling the child's soft hands against his body soothed him. Through instinct Kovu hugged the man-cub tighter, allowing his fur to cover the boy up. He wouldn't let anyone hurt Matthew. Not even Simba.

Kovu's struggling as he awoke from the dream made Matthew stir from his otherwise peaceful sleep. His little eyes opened to see Kovu's scared expression. Concerned, Matthew reached up to touch Kovu's cheek as the child hugged his neck.

"A… Are you okay, Kovu?" He whispered, stammering softly as he found safety in the lion's mane.

"Yes, I am alright little one. I am sorry if I have woken you up. Go back to sleep, little one." With a soft cooing, Kovu stroked the child's back allowing him to relax before sleep reclaimed the child. The lion shifted Matthew so the child was curled up back in his paws comfortably.

"Heh… So cute and precious…" Kovu whispered with a chuckle, licking the boy's head softly. Deep humming filled the air as he helped the little one settle into dreamland. Once he made sure the child was sleeping once more, Kovu rested his head closely in his paws.

He thought of what Simba had said, finding a man village in hopes to find his parents. He wasn't sure if Simba had said that in hopes to get rid of the man-cub. Or if it was a way to help him. Not knowing Simba's true motives annoyed the lion heavily. Just whose side was he on?

Rustling grass outside broke his concentration and brought Matthew closer via instinct. Whatever was out there sneaking was clearly here for the man-cub. They won't have him. No matter what.

"Kovu? Are you here?" Kiara poked her head with a smile, harder to see her mate that was further in the den. Upon hearing Kovu's deep sigh of relief, she walked in knowing that he was there. "There you are. I couldn't see you at first. Good morning. Did you sleep well?"

"Hello Kiara. Goodness, you scared me. I thought you were something bad creeping up. Good morning to you too". They shared a loving nuzzle, purring gently. She smiled as Kovu shifted a little to show the still sleeping human in his paws.

"I slept alright, despite having the most horrific dream. That moment with Simba yesterday on constant repeat. Repeatedly. Like I was living the same day. But each time it got more creepy. Simba had a more malicious face and he was reaching for Matthew's head. I've been on edge ever since then."

Kiara became concerned, stroking the child's head gracefully as she listened to Kovu's woes. "Our dreams can stem from what we're feeling, reflecting what is happening in our lives at that moment. Maybe your dream came from the worry you feel of not being able to protect Matthew. Am I right?"

Kovu sighed deeply, his eyes closed in deep thought. His head slowly nodded, just to confirm Kiara's theory. "That's correct. I'm worried I will fail him. That I will not be there in one instance that will lead to his demise. We need to reunite him with his parents and get them to safety as soon as possible."

The lion cupped the back of Matthew's head and massaged the boy's hair to keep the sleeping boy nice and calm. He didn't want the child to wake up during his conversation. "I wanted him to be in Pride Rock which would be much safer than this den but Simba.."

"Ignore what my father has said. We see the goodness in this child. My mother sees goodness and so does your sister. It's us against Simba. We have enough evidence to get him into Pride Rock where he'll be safe. Don't let what Simba said get to you. You're doing an incredible job, Kovu." Kiara interjected.

Her mate beamed as they nuzzled, soft purring filling the den creating a calm atmosphere with the child's soft breathing. "That gives me some hope that everything will turn out. I want to take Matthew to look for any more man villages on the outskirts of the Pride Rocks. His parents may have taken refuge there"

Kiara nodded, licking Kovu's cheek. "Stay safe, okay? I know you mean no harm but if man sees you they will try to attack you on sight, especially if they see Matthew."

"I know, Kiara. Don't worry. I'll be as safe as I can. I'll only look on from a distance." Kovu chuckled, his body more relaxed and calm as Matthew continued to nestle within such velvet-like fur. He smiled, using his nose to tuck the child even closer. "But I'll make sure Matthew rests up a bit more first." He chuckled.

Away from the den, the grass began to rustle as movement could be seen traversing through the thick greenery. A thin red tail with a bushy tail poked out from amongst the bushes. "Timon, I don't think we're looking in the right place. Maybe we should look under some logs instead."

Rustling sparked up next to him as a tiny head poked out, a small meerkat who raised an eyebrow. "Pumbaa, my wonderful companion. We are looking in the right place. We're going to find the best smorgasbord in all the Pride Lands."

"I don't know Timon." A small yet stubby warthog peered up to get a better view of his surroundings. "I can't see any logs."

"Don't worry. I know where to look." Timon gloated, a smug look on his face leaving the undergrowth to look in more shadier parts of the land.

Pumbaa tallied behind, waddling up beside his friend. "Are you sure? You seem to be wandering around not knowing where you're going."

Timon shrugged off Pumbaa's comment - He knew what he was doing. After all, when Simba was living with him and Pumbaa he would find the best bugs in a snap. Pumbaa had a good sense too but he would only find the slimy and sticky ones and they weren't his cup of tea. The crunchy ones would make a meal.

"I know where they are, don't you worry Pumbaa. Where have I ever done you wrong?" Timon smiled, beginning to scour high and low for any signs of the bug buffet they would hope to find.

"Come on.. Come on.. Where are the bugs? The logs? Anyone? Hello?" Oh boy. This is gonna be tricky."

"Why don't we ask Simba? He should know. After all, he has helped us find them before in the past." Pumbaa suggested, his tail swaying softly, watching Timon struggle to find any leads.

"The king must be on his morning patrol Pumbaa. We can't bother him. We need to do this ourselves." Timon dusted his fur off a little. He turned his head, seeing a small yet dark den. "Hmmm… Maybe there are some tasty grubs inside here?"

Pumbaa worriedly walked up as he saw Timon approach the dark cavern, eyes almost bulging out. "Hmmm… T… Timon…? I don't think you should be getting too close."

"Nonsense Pumbaa. What could go wrong? It's not like they're going to be a monster or somethi…" Timon's fur stood up on end, gulping nervously as he got silenced by a big looming shadow towering over him.

"Uhhh… Pumbaa? I think we should maybe…" Timon squeaked out a scared cry as he slowly backed away.

"Hello.. W… What are you doing?" It spoke which sent the two screaming in panic as they high-tailed it out of there, ducking into the grass nearby for cover.

"RUN!"

The screaming meerkat made Matthew lower his head a little, retreating into the darkness of the cave. Why did they run away like that? Why did they scream? He was only trying to say hello. It made him feel embarrassed, hugging his knees tightly as if to escape from the cruel world. Would he ever be truly accepted here? Maybe Simba was right.

Kovu walked up, having seen the whole thing, placing a paw on the child's shoulder. "Hey.. It's okay, little cub. Timon and Pumbaa can be very silly sometimes." He put extra power into those last few words, giving the pair a serious look.

"Heh.. Hey, Kovu. How are you doing? Why are you in this den? Did something happen between you and Simba? And who is this… little guy?" Timon giggled nervously as he fiddled his small fingers together.

Kovu wasn't having it, his scowl growing. "Nothing happened between me and Simba, Timon. And this little one is Matthew." He smiled down at the little man-cub happily, purring lovingly as he nuzzled his cheek. "I found him abandoned a few days ago. He'll be staying here until I can reunite him with his lost parents."

"Awww.. Isn't that sweet, Timon?" Pumbaa exclaimed, waddling up to Matthew, who quickly hid behind Kovu in a panic. "We should help the little guy find his parents; don't you think?"

Timon wasn't so sure, walking up closer to examine the little human, rubbing his chin. "Hmmm… I'm not sure… Hey! I have an idea." He beamed at his companion. "Why don't we help the little guy find his parents? Does Simba know about him?"

Kovu nodded his head. "Yes he does. I can't say he's too thrilled with Matthew here. But regardless of what he thinks, I'm going to help him. Nala, Kiara, and Vitani are helping too."

Pumbaa squinted his eyes in mixed confusion and annoyance at Timon, shaking his head as he knew what was more important. "Anyway! Kovu, what do you say? Can you let us help him out?"

"Of course, that would be great! The more the merrier! Could you both do me a big favour? I want to see if there's any man villages in the borders of the Pride Lands. I want to see if his parents could be there. I need you both to watch Matthew. I don't want to risk him in any danger. There's something dangerous wiping out the man villages so the safest place for Matthew is here."

"No Kovu! Don't go! W… What if Simba comes here while you're gone? O… Or what if something scary comes. Shouldn't I come with you to see if my parents are at the village?"

Kovu hushed the whimpering child, bringing him close with a gentle paw, nuzzling and licking the boy's cheek. "Shssh… Shssh… You are the safest here, little cub. My top priority is for you to be safe. I will need your pendant just in case I find them."

"B… But what about Kiara…? Or Vitani…? O… Or Nala…?" The boy continued to whimper, pressing his tearing face into Kovu's mane. "I… I don't wanna be alone…"

Kovu hugged the boy tightly, letting those heart-warming coos and purrs; a paw stroking the child's head and back in a slow relaxing manner. "You're alright, my little cub. I promise you. I won't leave you. They'll be busy with their training. But I'm sure once they have finished they'll see you. I'll make sure they'll know. Besides Timon and Pumbaa will make sure you're alright. Right, you two?"

The duo nodded quickly and saluted; Timon with his paw and Pumbaa with his tail. "Of course, Kovu. You can trust us." Timon giggled.

Making sure, Kovu leaned in. "I am leaving my faith in you both. If anything happens to him, I pray to the Great Kings of the Past you will both get it understood?"

They sweated heavily by the weight of Kovu's warning, with Tom pressing two fingers against each other. "Y… Yes, of course. We get it. He'll be safe with us."

"Good! Now to let Kiara know." He lowered his muzzle to the still crying little cub in his embrace, licking away his tears. "I promise I will never ever leave you, little one. When I first saw you, I made a promise with you and I will not break that promise."

Matthew looked up; his hands close to his face; finding it hard to speak with the build-up of tears. "R… Really Kovu…?" His hands clung to Kovu's fur, trembling as the thought of being alone with these two strangers terrified him. Why couldn't he go with Kovu?

"Of course, little cub. Now I'll be back soon. Stay close to this cave. If there's any trouble, rush in and hide. As soon as I come back I'll return straight here." Kovu hugged Matthew tightly and kissed his forehead before walking out of the den.

Matthew softly whimpered as he reached out for Kovu as he walked out, heading towards where the lionesses were preparing for the hunt. Seeing Timon and Pumbaa looking at him made him recoil back slightly. The young child tried to hide deeper in the den but Timon reached out with a paw.

"Hey, don't worry kid. He'll be back. I'm positive. You're safe with me and Pumbaa. While you're with us we're gonna teach you some wonderful things." The meerkat reassured him, softly patting the boy's leg with a smile.

"Yeah, kid. We'll make sure nothing bad happens to ya. You're as safe with us as you are with Kovu." Pumbaa added, wadding up alongside Timon.

"O… Okay but Kovu says you know Simba… How do I know I can trust you two?" Matthew said timidly, hugging his knees tight. "You might tell Simba I'm alone so he can do whatever he wants with me."

"Why would we do that, kid? I know Simba can be distrustful sometimes but that's to protect everyone. He's a good guy once you get to know him. Besides, if Kovu says you're alright then you're alright with us." Timon proudly explained, showing a proud thumbs up.

Pumbaa gladly added to the conversation, too knowing Simba's good heart. "He won't hurt ya kid. That's ridiculous. We've known him since he was a wee cub."

"Well.. If you say so then.. Okay. What did you want to teach me? Is it something cool?" Matthew smiled, excited to learn something from his new friends.

Timon jumped on Pumbaa's back, using his paw in a 'come here' motion, getting Matthew on his feet. "Come on. Follow me kid. You won't learn anything here."

Matthew shook his head, clinging to the wall of the den. "No, I can't leave. K.. Kovu told me to stay here. I don't wanna make him mad."

Timon rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. "Come on kid. We're only gonna be right outside the den and besides don't you want to learn something exciting?"

Matthew looked down and fiddled his fingers together nervously, unsure of what to do. While he was intrigued by what Timon wanted to teach him, he didn't want to go against Kovu's wishes. But it was close to the den.

"Umm… Okay Timon, I guess…" Matthew squeaked out softly, fiddling his fingers more.

"Great choice kid! Let's go then! Lead the Pumbaa!" Timon smiled as he jumped on the warthog's back as Pumbaa walked into the grassy patch close by the den. "Come on kid. This way!"

Matthew was nervous. This didn't seem close to the den. He remembered what Kovu said; stay close to the den. It played over and over in his head like a mantra. A shaky hand rested on the still cold rocky wall.

"Well? Are you coming, kid?" Timon shouted out, poking out on Pumbaa's head so Matthew knew exactly where they were.

Matthew nodded, slowly walking out of the safety of the den, looking around as he approached the duo. "O… Okay… Sorry…"

"Maybe the kid should sit on me, Timon. He does look small." Pumbaa suggested, walking back out of the grass in front of the small human.

Timon brought his hand to his chin, stroking it as he had a deep thought for a moment, jumping off Pumbaa's back, a paw patting the warthog's back as if suggesting for Matthew to sit on it.

After a few minutes of trouble, Matthew managed to sit on Pumbaa's back; the child wasn't tall or heavy for his age so the warthog had no trouble carrying the little guy. As the warthog and the meerkat led the child away from the den, the child looked back worried. "Umm… Are you sure it's okay to leave the den? I don't wanna get into trouble."

"Nonsense, kid. You're alright. We won't be going too far. After all, the best things you'll learn will be away from home, right Pumbaa?" Timon reassured with his usual snarky yet kind personality.

"Yeah, Timon. Don't worry kid. We'll get you back before Kovu even knows it." Pumbaa smiled, leading the kid more into the grass which rustled in the cool breeze.

Matthew wasn't sure where he was being taken. It worried him. There were dangerous things out there and they weren't close to Pride Rock for protection. With each step, Matthew got more nervous and scared, his listening became more sensitive and more alert; even the tiniest of noises got him startled.

Pumbaa was the first to notice Matthew's fidgeting. "Are you alright back there, little guy?" He kept up with Timon who travelled at a fast pace, soon reaching a vast grassy and tree-heavy area with plenty of fallen logs in the undergrowth.

"N… No… We've gone too far… We're gonna get in trouble… W… We should head back…"

"What? We just got here kid. Besides, this is where we need to be. This is where the teaching starts. Pumbaa, if you will?" Timon smiled eagerly.

Pumbaa leaned down, noting for Matthew to slide off his back, which he did promptly. The warthog waddled up to the large log in front and using his strength lifted, showing an ensemble of sticky, slimy, and squirming bugs.

Matthew stayed close to the duo, his only source of protection. He felt his stomach turn as he saw the creepy crawlies, stepping back promptly. "Ewww. Gross."

Timon rolled his eyes at the comment. "Oh, you're just like Kiara when she was a cub. You won't know until you try. A reliable source of energy!" Timon beamed up at the child as he presented the man-cub with an assortment of bugs writhing on a leaf.

"N… No thank you…" Matthew pleaded, backing away more until he felt his stomach begin to calm down. "I'm good…"

"Oh? Well, more for you big guy." Timon offered the leaf up to Pumbaa who quickly and easily consumed the insects.

"Mmm… Yum, although I wish there were more slimy ones." The warthog requested as the meerkat slapped his face and groaned.

"Pumbaa. It's the crunchy ones that make the meal." Timon picked up a small bug and plopped it into his mouth, munching away loudly.

"Slimy!"

"Crunchy!"

"Slimy!"

"Crunchy!"

"Slimy!"

Matthew sighed and rolled his eyes as he watched the two argue. Peering up at the clear blue sky, he wondered where Kovu was, wishing he was with the lion right now. He did like being with Timon and Pumbaa, they seemed like fun but if Kovu returned to the den while he was out he would get in deep trouble. It didn't help that the thought of eating bugs wasn't appealing.

As the two argued and the boy looked on, a faraway bush shrouded in darkness rustled as two big red eyes gleamed within. A deep chuckle rumbled as they disappeared. Mfalme chuckled as his eyes flickered with malicious intent. The child was alone! This was perfect! Those two small runts wouldn't be able to protect him this time.

"Kuhari. The child is alone. This is perfect. It's time to kick off the plan." Mfalme snickered as the two lions left the trio alone, sneaking off out of sight.

Kuhari giggled manically. "Excellent. I can't wait to see the despair on that child's face. But what about that meerkat and warthog? Won't they try to interfere?"

Mfalme raised an eyebrow only to break out in laughter. "Them? Oh, don't make me laugh. You must be joking, correct? Those little pipsqueaks are nothing. They'll go with the child. Three birds with one stone."

Kuhari chuckled eagerly, excited with the thought. "Let's do it, boss. Let's do it right now."

Mfalme sighed as he took the lead, a deep huff leaving the head lion's nostrils. "You're such a little cub sometimes…"

The two lions reached a more rocky area amongst the trees. A herd of wildebeest were grazing, their tails swishing behind them. Mfalme smirked demonically, chuckling under his breath. Step one was complete. Now for step two. "Wait here. Do not move until I return."

Seeing his lackey nod, Mfalme sneaked up towards the wildebeest herd, hiding behind some rocks. He looked around, thinking of a way to trigger them and lead them towards the kid. "Hmm… What to do… What to do…" The evil lion scoured the area more, keeping to the shadows of the land.

"Ah ha…" Mfalme smirked, chuckling to himself as he had an idea. "Perfect…" The lion took a big breath right behind them and let out the most powerful roar he could muster. The tremendous sound shook the ground, trembling the stones and sending the nearby animals running for cover.

The wildebeest panicked and screeched in fear, beginning to run in the opposite direction. Mfalme let out a deep laugh as he ran right behind them, roaring in a dramatic crescendo. The scared herd ran faster, their hooves pounding the earth below their feet. When he knew they were stuck in their rampage, Mfalme stopped and walked back to Kuhari.

"Come on.. Let's follow them. We need to make sure the job is done. But stay out of sight!" He ordered.

Kuhari nodded with a giggle, allowing his boss to take the lead, running after him. "Okay boss! Excellent work!"

"Slimy!"

"Crunchy!"

"Slimy!"

"Crunchy!"

"Slimy!"

Matthew groaned a little as Timon and Pumbaa continued to argue, with each passing second making the child miss being with Kovu increasingly. This was the slowest hour of his life. "C… Can we go back now?" He pleaded.

"Hang on kid this is an intense debate we're having here." Timon barked, continuing to argue with Pumbaa until the sound of what seemed like thunder silenced them. "What was that?" He gulped, looking at Pumbaa in worry.

Pumbaa looked behind the trio, stuttering in fear as he saw what was coming. "T… Timon? Timon! RUN!" He yelped, running away in terror from the quickly approaching danger.

Timon gulped and didn't wait around, quickly rushing away in panic, the meerkat clinging onto the warthog's tail for dear life. "Let's get out of here!"

Matthew shuddered heavily, looking around in panic only to see Timon and Pumbaa running away too fast for him to catch. "W… Wait…!?" Whimpering, the child found a small burrow in a hillside, it looked abandoned and heard no sound inside. It was better than risking it with the wildebeest. Climbing inside, he curled up tight and shuddered. The outside rumbling forced Matthew to cover his ears as tears formed in his eyes. "K… Kovu…?!"

When the sound would get too loud, the child would seek shelter deeper into the burrow, crying louder. He pleaded for Kovu to come and save him. To hold him close to his fur and whisper calming words into his ear. "K… Kovu…"

It didn't take long for Timon and Pumbaa to reach Pride Rock, panting and sweating buckets. "Whew… That was scary…" Timon sighed, swiping away some drops from his forehead.

Kiara and Nala walked up to the duo, confused. What had happened to put them in such a state.

"Timon? What happened? I thought Kovu put you in charge of Matthew when he was away?" Kiara scowled, demanding an answer. Not seeing Matthew with them or nearby sent her motherly instincts sky rocketing. And Nala was not too far behind.

"W… Well… You see, princess. We…" Timon tried to explain before Nala interrupted.

"Timon! Tell us right now. He is only a young cub and you left him all alone." Nala interjected, fear running through her veins. Even though she did not have as much interaction with the child as Kiara. She knew how precious the child was and how important he was to her daughter.

Timon gulped. "H… He was right with us…" He looked behind him and all around, nervously shuddering when he didn't see the child anywhere. He turned around to see the two lion's scowls growing deeper and louder. "T… There was a sudden stampede of wildebeest and we quickly ran out of instinct."

Nala and Kiara shared a look of pure horror, a tidal wave of what could be washing over them, sending them into action. Nala couldn't help but think back to that awful moment. When Mufasa was taken from them all those years ago. They wouldn't lose someone again to their ferocious power. They couldn't.

"Kiara! Go with Timon and Pumbaa. They will lead you to where this stampede happened. Find Matthew and get him out to safety back to Pride Rock. I'm going to tell Simba and round up a rescue party."

"But I thought Simba didn't like Matthew. And surely the other lionesses wouldn't.."

"No time to argue. Go now." Nala ordered and watched as the trio sprinted into the distance. She only hoped they would get there on time. Goodness knows how the little one was faring. She wished she was there, able to curl around what must be the crying traumatised child, keep him close and safe. She wanted to comfort him.

She left the confused lionesses around him who followed back to Pride Rock where Simba was resting from the gruelling morning report, outside the den. "Simba!"

Simba felt like every bone was aching, relaxing his weary bones. Looking up at the peaceful sky, he did not know of the upcoming threat on their way towards Pride Rock. His ears twitched as he thought the sound of his mate crying out reached him. Nala calling out soon snapped the king out.

"Nala!? What happened? You looked like you've had the most terrifying scare. Do you need to rest?" Simba asked, looking concerned.

"No! I am fine Simba. But there has been terrifying news. There is a wildebeest stampede on their way here. And Matthew is lost in the middle of it. We need to save him!"

The lionesses around her filled the air with audible gasps of shock and worry, mumbling and whispers laying the ground. The man-cub? It was here? And it had a name?

Simba's face grew more cold and distant, unable to block out the child's face. His thoughts then shifted to the horrifying scene of Mufasa in his last moments alive. A great lion taken before his time. It was as if his heart was paused. His mind trapped between seconds as his fur blew gently in the wind. "Nala… I… The man-cub… He… I can't…"

Nala couldn't believe her ears. Was Simba not going to help her save an innocent's life? "Simba… I can't believe this. I know man is dangerous. I know how that moment scarred you and made you fear wildebeest. But there is a young cub out there in danger. Scared for his life with no one to comfort him. Mufasa was there. He came to save you. So, for Matthew, be there for him. Save him!"

Nala took deep breaths, her too was taken away from her own outburst. The queen's closed eyes shuddered along with her body, keeping that composure in check. Feeling her body calm, she looked at Simba dead in the eye.

"Me and Kiara are going to go and save him, regardless of how you see him. Please… Do the right thing."

Nala looked away sadly, running down the steps to run in the direction where she saw Kiara run earlier. 'I need to hurry… I need to hurry… Matthew, hold on…"

Vitani sprinted up, panting for breath as the two lionesses shared a look. "I… I wanna help to save Matthew. I can't stay still when I know he's in danger."

Nala couldn't help but smile deeply, nodding. "Thank you, Vitani. Now let us not delay. We need to save Matthew."

They sped up, rushing through the trees and the undergrowth where they came close to running straight into some wildebeest that were still rampaging.

"I wonder why they're running around so crazily.. They're normally peaceful." Vitani pondered, eyeing the situation, hoping she could make out where Matthew could be. "Also… I heard what you said to Simba… I… I hope he does open to Matthew… I understand why he's fearful but… He's just a kid… A kid who has lost so much…"

"I'm not sure about that myself, Vitani." Nala with a heavy heart, shook her head, the memories of losing Mufasa flooding back as she watched the wildebeest run by. Those nights where Scar took over, her small body trembling under her mother's fur for protection just so she could sleep at night.

The queen sighed, she thought she had put that traumatic part of her life behind her. Surely this all couldn't be a coincidence. Could there be something more at play here?

She allowed a small smile to form on her muzzle. "I know Simba will come to his senses eventually. He will warm up to Matthew with time. But until then what we can do is be there for Matthew in this tough time. We will be his new family until he can be reunited with his parents."

Vitani nodded back, a smile from ear to ear. The thought excited her to no end. It will give the lioness the willpower to save Matthew.

Finding a way through the wildebeest, they slipped on by, soon reaching Kiara along with Timon and Pumbaa.

"Did you find Matthew at all, Kiara?" Nala queried, hoping they had already found the child and took him to safety.

Kiara shook her head, a paw gently brushing away some dirt into the air. "No.. Not yet.. The more we wait the more of a chance he is in danger. W.. What if he is, you know? Lost.."

Nala embraced her teary-eyed daughter with a paw, rubbing away the salty drops. "Nonsense, Kiara. We will find him. We have too. Come. Let us begin the search."

Kiara tearfully nodded, nuzzling her mother softly on the cheek, gentle purrs broken up by sniffling. She saw the child like a cub she had always dreamed of. Even if she was not his mother, it didn't not matter to her. Her instincts still burned. Burning with the desire to save and to protect.

Kiara took the lead with the calmness and elegance of a future queen, making the watching Nala immensely proud indeed. Vitani bolted to the west as per Kiara's instruction, retracing the stampede's thundering steps.

The young lionesses sent Timon and Pumbaa to the north away from danger, hoping they could use their excellent sneaking skills to try and pinpoint where Matthew could be. She figured with how timid the young human was that he may seek shelter somewhere warm, dark, and quiet like a burrow.

Turning to her mother, Kiara pleaded for her to return to Pride Rock. "Please Mum… Matthew may find himself back towards Pride Rock and in that case there needs to be someone he knows there to comfort him." Kiara saw the nervous face on her mother showing and she took a deep breath before comforting her mother. "I will be fine. I know I can do this! Please, have faith in me!"

Nala wanted to say something. Something to plead to her daughter to allow her to say. Even as a lionesses she still worried about her little cub. But she swallowed her worries and nodded. She knew what Kiara was doing and she had every faith in her. "Alright, I will go. But please be safe."

Only nodding in return with a loving smile, the young princess watched her mother return home. Gazing back for a moment, she looked forward determined to find Matthew. Rushing into action, she rushed to the east to cover all directions, to increase the possibility of finding Matthew alive and well.

Kovu had been to many man villages in the last few hours, hoping and praying he saw two man like those in Matthew's locket. But he was in vain. The many humans he saw in their small communities did not look like one like the picture. He felt down. He felt like the lion had failed Matthew. Panting from all the running, he curled up under some trees, letting the cool breeze run past his fur.

"Little cub… Please… Forgive me…"

Mental images of the disappointed face of the young child plagued his mind, his soft whimpers and tearful eyes drilled deep. Unable to rest, Kovu stood up and walked off, the idea of returning to Pride Rock to deliver the shocking news not a pleasant one.

"Just one more… Please… Just one more village…"

Leaving the shelter of the trees to the vast plains as the lion entered Simba's kingdom, Kovu walked as slowly as possible, trying to delay the inevitable. He wanted to investigate more but he didn't want to be seen. They would have panicked and fought back, possibly even chased him away back to Pride Rock.

The tall, towering mountain soon appeared on the horizon, looking as majestic as ever. Gazing upon it against that beautiful backdrop made the lion smile. It gave him hope that everything would be okay. There were sure to be more man villages further out and once Simba accepted the child he could suggest an expedition to find the child's parents.

"Matthew?!"

"Where are you?! Matthew?!"

Kiara's voice!? Kovu sprinted in action, allowing the voice of his mate to guide him, sending some animals scurrying from the surprise of Kovu shooting past. She sounded worried and that made him think the worse. Oh no… What did Timon and Pumbaa do?

"Kiara?! Where are you?!" Kovu shouted, roaring in hopes she would hear. A returning roar confirmed it. Following the sound, he reunited with Kiara. He at once saw the worry and fear on her face; the lioness' body shuddering as if exposed to the chilly night.

"Kiara? What happened? Breath. Deep breath now, come on." Kovu consoled his mate, softly purring with their cheeks rubbing lovingly. Leaning in to lick her cheek, Kiara calmed down and looked behind her in worry once more. "Tell me what happened? Where is Matthew?"

Kiara closed her eyes, worried about Kovu's reaction. "H… He's lost in a wildebeest stampede. According to Timon and Pumbaa they suddenly appeared out of nowhere and ran out of panic. Vitani is helping me search but we haven't found him yet.

"W… Wait what?!" Kovu's jaw dropped, his fur standing up on end before rushing past her, sparks flying through his veins as the thought of Matthew in danger pierced his brain. It didn't take him that long to find the rampage. His feet felt it first before his ears heard it. Almost running into the massive wall of muscle, Kovu screeched to a halt.

"Timon and Pumbaa are going to get it now. I told them to watch him in the den. They better have a grand explanation for this."

Trapped in front of the stampede, he felt hopeless. Unable to find a way past them, there was no way he could save Matthew. That's when he heard the flapping of wings.

Flying past the trees was Zazu who was shocked by the sight of such destruction. He perched on Kovu's shoulder, his tail feathers flickering with worry.

"Kovu? Are you alright? Are you hurt? The queen has sent me to help with the search for the young man-cub. It is imperative we get him out of harm's way and back to Pride Rock.

Kovu raised an eyebrow, leaning in as an attempt to hear the bird over the roar of those trampling hooves. He smiled with the thought of Nala sending the bird for aid. He made a mental note to thank her later. "No.. No.. I'm alright. But I'm shocked that you are so eager to help. I'm sure Simba told you about Matthew. After all, he has shown me clearly that he wishes him gone."

"Well, yes, the king has informed me of the man-cub during the morning patrol. The animals were divided on his presence. Some wanted him gone while some saw him as no threat. I do not believe Simba wants the young one gone. The little one reminds Simba of his youth. However, it is bringing back more of the traumatic memories than the good ones. The memories he wished he could suppress. Deep down he wants what's best for the young child."

Kovu found what the major-domo said interesting. This whole situation was more far-fetched than he thought. "I need to see that with my own eyes. We need to calm this rampage down before we can find Matthew. It would be too dangerous. Simba is the only one. Can you ask for his help?"

"Hmm.. Of course. I will see what I can do. I don't think I will be enough to break Simba from his inner turmoil, however. Keep searching for the young man cub." Zazu flapped his wings and took to the skies, leaving Kovu to continue the search.

Zazu returned quickly, not wishing to waste any precious time. A young life was on the line. He perched in front of the den's entrance where Simba was planted at the cliff's edge; gazing at the distance as if in deep thought.

"Sire? Sire! Oh, please come quick. Kovu has asked for your help. The stampede has gotten more reckless. You must help him stop it or else everyone will be in danger.."

"And what of the little man-cub?" Simba asked, not moving an inch. He had been thinking about Nala's words and what they meant, wondering what his family saw in this little human that he did not.

"Still not found, your majesty. Kiara and Vitani are still searching. I saw Kovu running past after I informed him too. I hope he is found." The bird's head lowered sadly; would another life be lost to such sad circumstances?

Nala was watching from the side-lines, hoping and praying her mate had heeded her words well. Hoping he would do the right thing and save Matthew. But what Simba said next would shock her to the very core.

"Nala. Protect Pride Rock with the other lionesses, get everyone inside the den for protection just in case. Zazu with me. We have a man-cub to save." As he passed his mate, the king noticed tears running down a smiling face.

"Thank you…"

Simba only nodded with a soft smile and galloped down the steps and onto the soft grass straight towards the stampede. It would soon reach Pride Rock. He had to guide them away and then find Matthew. But there were too many of them. It was too risky.

Kovu was the first to see Simba run towards them with Zazu right behind. Did the bird do it? "S… Simba? What are you doing here?"

"A king needs to protect his pride and his home, does he not? I'm sorry I didn't come sooner. But let's not waste time. We need to give Nala and the other lionesses time to get the cubs into the den for safety. We may not be able to disperse the herd quick enough. And I need to keep you all safe."

Simba sighed as he faced Kovu, the king's face overwhelmed with guilt. "I also need to apologise to you… And the man-cub. You were right. You were all right. I was too quick to judge. I let my past control the actions I took now. I blamed him for the crimes that his ancestors did. I will give the man-cub a chance and he will be welcome at Pride Rock."

Kovu couldn't see as salty drops of joy fogged his visions. His breath hitched, trying and failing to hold back his composure. Vitani and Kiara watched on with a smile despite the ongoing danger right beside them. "D… Do you really mean that, Simba?"

Simba nodded, placing a paw on the younger male's shoulder. "I do… And to make up for it I will be the one to find and save the man-cub. No matter the cost. Kovu! You'll be in charge. Try and get the wildebeest away from Pride Rock, do whatever you have too but stay safe! Good luck!" He faced Timon and Pumbaa. "You two! With me!"

Simba ran upstream, following the wildebeest's steps where he hoped to find where this rampage first began, his two old friends right behind. However, the child's safety was a priority. His ears twitched; the king's hearing focused to hopefully catch something outside the roaring of hooves. Something soft. Something delicate. Lowering his ears more down to the ground, he began to hear what sounded like… Soft crying?

The once rogue lion was speechless as Simba dashed off. His mind still buzzed with the king's words as tears, like fresh dew, sat in the corner of his eyes. Shaking them away and gazing at this stampede, seeing them head towards Pride Rock. He didn't know what to do and they didn't have enough time left! Frustrated, Kovu let out a loud and angry roar, flooding the air with sound.

The wildebeest screeched in panic and ran away from Kovu, the horde dispersing softly. Kovu smirked as he hatched an idea.

"Use your roars! Guide them away from Pride Rock!" Kovu ordered, running down alongside the stampede, roaring loudly towards the wildebeest.

The two lionesses nodded eagerly as they followed, a good distance between the three lions as they all took deep breaths and let out such loud roars it almost deafening themselves and each other. The plan was slowly showing progress, the wildebeest startled enough to escape from the danger. Away from Pride Rock.

"It's working… It's working! Keep going! Give it all you got!" Kovu shouted back as a symphony of roars filled the air with tremendous force. Some wildebeest were able to get past but the dangerous stampede became an annoying disturbance at best.

The three lions panted with exhaustion, needing to care for their voices for the next few days. "W… We did it…" Kiara giggled, nuzzling her mate. "I'm so proud of you, taking the lead like that. You'll be a great king one day."

Kovu blushed heavily with Vitani smiling by his side. "She is right, you know, brother. You saved tons of lives today." She giggled and playfully slapped Kovu on the side.

Kovu's cheeks continued to burn, embarrassed by their kind words. "I… I'll think about it. I don't think I will be a good enough king to replace Simba. Not by a long shot."

Simba followed the sound of the crying, allowing Timon and Pumbaa to lead the way with their better hearing. "Well? How close are we?" A rogue wildebeest caused the king to push his friends to safety."

"Whew… That was a close on…"

Loud crying suddenly became audible from deep underground. That must have been Matthew. The rogue beast must have startled him enough to reveal his location. "So that is where he has been all this time…" Simba gloomily confirmed the three standing in front of a large borrow where soft whimpers appeared.

Now that the wildebeest had now mostly dispersed, only the crying filled the air bringing forth a saddened tone.

Simba felt awful. He was in part at fault for this happening. If only he had accepted Matthew sooner. Only he was the one to do this. Taking a deep breath, the king approached the burrow with Timon and Pumbaa giving them space.

Resting down by the gaping hole, Simba took a deep breath. "Matthew? It is me, Simba. I…"

"No! Go away! Don't attack me! D… Don't eat me…! D… Don't send me away…! D… Don't send me away from Kovu…!"

The boy's cries made this even harder for Simba but he knew what he had to do. Peering down the light saw a bare glimpse of the curled up tight crying boy, coated in sand and dust, his body shuddering. Oh, the unfortunate thing. Slipping a paw, he slowly stroked the boy's back. Feeling the scared boy yelp and freeze, he kept a close and steady calming rhythm.

"Shssh… I will not attack you, little one. I will not do anything of the sort. I was wrong. I feared my friends and family being in danger. And I took all that fear out on you. I lost my father too when I was young. Realising we were so similar also made me act out in such a foolish manner."

"I know that I may be unable to make up for what I have done. But I want to make things right. I would like you to stay with us in Pride Rock where it is safe. You'll be part of a bigger family until we can help you find your parents."

The crying slowly stopped where few sniffles remained. He felt the boy's back push back into the king's paw, forcing out a warm chuckle. "Shssh…" You're alright now, little one. Everything is going to be okay… You're safe now…"

The boy began to move, sliding off the king's paw as he crawled towards the exit. The paw guided him outside where Simba was waiting for him. Matthew shuddered heavily with tears staining his eyes. "Y… You promise?"

The king nodded, a deep warm smile on his face. Opening his front paws slightly with enough space for the little one to snuggle into. It looked so inviting, especially after the scary experience.

"I… I was so scared… T… There was no Kovu… and I… I…" Matthew couldn't fight back the tears again, reminding himself of how lost he was before he met Kovu. All those scary nights alone.

Simba brought the child into his lush soft fur, his paws gently wrapping around the child. Gently rocking Matthew back and forth, deep purring and humming soothed Matthew. "Shssh… Hush now, little one. You're alright. I've got you." Simba braced the child's head with a paw, bundling Matthew closer into his fur until he calmed down.

Matthew relaxed, nuzzling away into the king's fur. He felt so warm and snuggly, like a big heavy blanket. His body softened as the king hummed and sang to him comfortingly.

Timon and Pumbaa couldn't help but awww at the loving sight, leaving the two alone to allow them to start off on the right foot. They bumped into a not so happy Kovu. The duo gulped nervously, sweat running down their faces.

"Heh… Oh hey, Kovu?"

"Enough talk Timon! I told you both to watch Matthew in the den. Where it was safe. Why did you take him out of the den? He could have died today." Kovu snarled, tapping his foot in annoyance.

Simba couldn't help but chuckle warmly, shaking his head. He saw himself in Kovu when Kiara was a cub. "He is right, you two. You put a young life in danger, even if it is of man or not. All life is sacred in the circle of life. I will need to punish you both later."

Kovu sighed deeply but deep down was glad Matthew was safe. He was stunned when he saw Matthew snuggling deep into the king, nuzzling into Simba's warm fur. A gentle paw on the back of the child's head.

The lion strolled up, gently nuzzling into Matthew's cheek with a soft purr. He never felt so scared before until now, losing someone so important and so precious to him. "Are you alright, little cub?"

Matthew smiled happily, nodding as he hugged Kovu tightly, tearing as he saw and heard his protector once more. "Kovu!" He felt Kovu's breath on his ear as those melodic tones once more filled his mind. Deep hums and sweet cooing relaxed his body. "I… I was so scared…"

"I know… I know… But why did you leave the den? I told you to stay there for your protection. Why did you disobey me?" Kovu looked on in worry.

Matthew gazed at the floor, still in Simba's paws. "B… But Kovu… They said they had some important lessons to teach me. They said we wouldn't be gone for long… And then those animals came and we got separated.. I couldn't find my way back so I hid… I… I'm sorry…"

Kovu couldn't stay mad at Matthew, he was glad his little cub was safe. Embracing him tightly, Kovu nuzzled the child's cheek, licking away making Matthew giggle. "It's alright, little cub. I'm happy you're alright."

Matthew hugged Kovu tighter, not wanting to let go. "D… Did you happen to find my parents?"

Kovu sadly shook his head. "I'm sorry… I travelled everywhere… I went to ten or so villages but no luck. Don't worry we'll find them. We will all help you find them."

Matthew smiled, giggling as Kovu pressed his cheek against the boy's, purring lovingly.

Let's go home." Kovu shared a smile with Simba. "Let's all go home together."

Matthew nodded with excitement. For so long he didn't have a home and now he felt like he did. He had friends and family. Others he could rely on to find his parents. He gasped in shock as Simba gently picked him up and placed the child on his back.

"I would like to take Matthew home. After all, we have much needed bonding to do." Simba smiled and nodded for Kovu to lead the way back. The king felt at ease with his inner turmoil. Now longer afraid of the past once more and able to move forward. With a new member to the family.

Kovu couldn't be any happier and the look of joy on Matthew's face riding on Simba's back made him feel like he was on cloud nine. "Indeed, you both do. It will be nice to sleep in the den with everyone once more. And for Matthew to bond with his new family. I'm sure Nala, Vitani, and Kiara would love that as well."

Matthew smiled as he hung onto Simba's back, the child's curiosity getting the better of him. "Excuse me, your majesty?" Matthew asked with childish innocence. "What is this Circle of Life you talked about earlier?"

Simba chuckled warmly, like a grandparent who had over the years gained many stories worth sharing. "Oh, little Matthew. You do not need to use such words. We are family. I need to tell you a grand story when we return to Pride Rock. A story about the past of my family and our home. You will even get to hear about my father, the past king, Mufasa."

"Ooohhh! I cannot wait! Thank you, Mr. Simba!" Matthew giggled; the thought of the vast stories Simba would tell him excited the child tenfold. What was his father like? What was this Circle of Life about?

Simba and Kovu chuckled warmly with each other. Matthew would sure make life interesting. Kiara and Vitani saw the two males approach them with Matthew on Simba's back. They ran up and nuzzled Matthew all over, tearing with joy.

"Matthew!" Kiara cried.

"You're okay! I was so worried.." Vitani added with a smile.

Matthew hugged the two lionesses, nuzzling them happily with a giggle. "Kiara! Vitani!"

Kiara nuzzled her father, both purring lovingly. "Thank you Dad… For seeing what we see…"

Simba returned the nuzzle with a smile. "Kiara, I was foolish. So very foolish. I let my mind play tricks on me. I let my own fear control me. But no longer. I now see that even some humans have good hearts. Just like with lions. But you must thank Zazu and your mother for giving me that big push that you and Kovu started."

The group headed home, talking and laughing and bonding; their lives forever intertwined. The tall mountain was a beacon for their weary legs and tired heads.

"Do you see that, Matthew?" Simba smiled. "That is our home. And now it is yours. He chuckled as Matthew yawned, he too exhausted from the day's events. The strong heat was dying down as evening began to slowly roll in, the intense heat weakening. "Let's head back home so you can rest, little one. For now, rest in my fur."

Matthew weakly nodded and laid down, still clinging on tight as the boy took deep calm breaths. Burying his head into that lush fur made the child's body relax. "O… Okay Mr. Simba…"

Simba smiled happily, deep warm chuckles helping to soothe the child. Upon reaching Pride Rock, he saw Nala walking up and the two shared a deep loving nuzzle and soft licks. He saw Nala eyeing the small child half dozed off in his fur.

"Don't worry, he's alright. Only tired. I'm going to take him inside and rest. You can speak to him later, okay?"

Nala giggled and nodded, softly nuzzling Matthew's cheek with gentle licks. "Sleep well, little one. You'll be alright now. Safe and sound.."

The lionesses watching Simba rise on the steps looked on with a smile. Nala had explained the situation to them and as they watched the child sleep they couldn't help but awww. He was so small, precious, and looked so frail it triggered their maternal instincts to protect the little one.

Now deep inside the cool and dark den, Simba strolled carefully to the small, raised stone platform; his throne. Curling up softly, Simba manoeuvred Matthew into his soft paws, allowing the child to snuggle into him deeply. The king lowered his head so his mane could function as a pillow; that wet nose tucking the little man-cub nice and tight so Matthew's head was nestled in his mane. Once Matthew was settled a soft warm voice filled the den as Simba began to sing the lullaby he sang to Kiara when she was a new-born.

Mfalme and Kuhari growled in annoyance, claws appearing and marking the ground in anger. They had failed. They had kept an eye on the stampede once they had set it off but from amongst the wall of wildebeest it was hard to keep track. They felt something was wrong when the herd began to disperse. The booming roars of the Pride Landers signalled to them it was over.

Going to investigate, the duo saw them leave with the child alive and well albeit dusty on Simba's back. Not only had they failed but also they had accidentally pushed Matthew and Simba closer together.

"No! This wasn't the plan! Now we are doomed! He will have our heads!" Mfalme growled and began walking away with Kuhari right behind.

"W… What are we going to do now, boss?" The skittish lion let out a hushed and scared whimper, keeping a good distance.

"There's nothing we can't do! We can't go back! We have failed! If we go back we will die! Which means, one thing…"

"This is now personal.. And if I'm going to die… I'm gonna be taking that disgusting man child with me! I will see to it that he will suffer!" Mfalme cackled maniacally as he bit his own lip from the excitement, slightly pooling blood which dripped onto the ground. But despite the power in his voice, the malicious beast shuddered; a small tear rolling down his face…
