'Hello Halcyon Days': The Rolling Stone Interview
Story by Chizuru Honsho
Photography by Ryo Kunieda
[Excerpt: In her most intimate tell-all yet, Orihime Inoue sits down with RollingStone to talk about 'Halcyon Days,' her upcoming world tour, her struggles with mental illness—and the harrows and heartbreak it takes to make it to the top of pop music]
Driving down the narrow streets of Karakura Town, you would almost find it a forgettable place, a nowhere tucked between the greater bustles of urban somewheres. A scatter of generic stories splashed with the occasional small business, there's no keepsake here for the casual interloper.
Orihime Inoue would beg to differ, fingers pausing from where they're beating a happy rhythm against her knee to point at a local bakery. Her first job, she remarks, from her limited edition 1968 Mazda.
Inoue, a self-proclaimed sentimentalist, shot to fame when she first took to posting covers on YouTube at the prompting of a childhood friend. It's been three years between now and then, but the hitmaker insists she's still very much the girl she was when she started out in her one bedroom apartment.
"I still have letters from my first girlfriend in high school," Inoue explains a little bashfully, "I couldn't bring myself to get rid of them."
And this is the sentiment that follows into her sophomore album, 'Halcyon Days.' There's a sense of nostalgia in the singer's early girlhood, cocooning back to her idyllic small town comforts as she quavers about walking back home with a lover—a simple comfort, for a superstar whose recent net worth clocked enough to be able to afford a small island. Inoue, at 24, is the youngest female artist to top the Billboard charts of eight different countries within the first week of her album's release. With 'Halcyon Days' staying rooted at number one for the 40th week in a row, it's no surprise that the Pop Princess will soon be jetting off on her illustrious world tour that's already sold out in 52 of the 56 locations she'll be visiting all summer.
"The fans are a bit passionate," she admits, tucking a strand of naturally auburn hair behind her ear. "We haven't seen each other in a while, so I'm looking forward to greeting them on tour. For a while, I thought no one would really care enough to see me anymore, but the response online has been overwhelmingly kind and I'm grateful they still want me around enough to come see me!"
Despite being vocal about her long-standing struggles with depression, the singer-songwriter had largely dropped out of the public eye for months after an "intense period" of scrutiny online from dedicated trolls that flooded her social media with hateful accusations on her body, her songs and her alleged past lovers that she references in many of her songs.
"It got to a point where I would just...not use my phone," she confesses, hands wringing themselves into her acid-wash skirt. "I couldn't use the elevator or walk down the street without the feeling that one of them would eventually confront me in public. Meeting a critic in person isn't the same as a keyboard encounter and—and it got to me for a while."
True to form, fans were concerned that the singer's growing anxiety for public spaces would mean an indefinite hiatus for music, but breathed a sigh of relief when the popstar announced 'Hello Halcyon Days,' her world tour that's slated to span across a year, starting April 22.
"I know there's as much love as there is hate out there," Inoue signs off, a determined glint flashing through her eyes, "and I'm definitely looking forward to getting on stage again and performing all these new songs that I have for the fans."

Haven't Heard of Orihime Inoue? Here's Five Facts You Need to Know About the Halcyon Days Hitmaker
With the all-new Halcyon Days World Tour set to kick off on April 22, we're sure new fans are curious about what the big deal is with singer-songwriter Orihime Inoue. Why is she so popular? What's her deal? Did she really write a song about cyborgs? Here at People magazine, we've got you covered with the 101!
#1 Humble Beginnings
Orihime Inoue picked up a guitar roughly seven years ago for the first time to post covers of her favorite songs from the comfort of her one-bedroom apartment. She had all the makings of what record labels at the time wanted: a salt of the earth poster girl for working hard, being kind and living your dreams, one hit single at a time!
#2 Early Life Tragedies
While all seems fine and dandy now, things were not always simple for the uprising star. Orihime lost her beloved brother to a car crash when she was twelve, and spent much of her teenage years providing for herself before her singing career took off.

#3 Past Relationships
Although the 24-year-old is free-wheelin' now, Orihime spent much of her early twenties in a serious, long-term relationship with Uryu Ishida, critically acclaimed designer for the fashion brand 'Antithesis'. The pair split up in May of last year, but continued to remain close friends as they supported each other's projects.
[Pictured: Orihime Inoue and Uryu Ishida posing for a picture at Paris Fashion Week, 2018]
#4 Love is Love!
Orihime has long been a passionate advocate for LGBT rights, going as far as to donate to various charities championing the cause for equality. While the star herself has been coy on what she identifies as, young fans at her shows have praised her for creating a warm and safe environment. Three cheers for the rainbow camp? We have reason to believe so!
#5 Yes, She Really Wrote A Song About Wanting To Be A Cyborg
We don't know how to explain this one either, but it's a bop! Listen here.

/.
Three months later
Turns out, the fifteen year olds are the least of his problems.
The problem is that Orihime Inoue is really nice.
"You know, you don't have to get me my coffee every morning," Ichigo grouses, meeting her at the head of a set of corridors. She's in an oversized hoodie and crocs, two Starbucks cups clutched in her small hands. He takes one and gives her a pointed look. "I get paid for this kind of thing."
She shakes her head. "It's a rough meeting today, we're gonna need it." They're doing tour planning today, and according to Orihime, it's a bit of a pickle to pin down— her words exactly. Ichigo hasn't worked for her long, but he's worked for her long enough to know that 'pickle' is her version of some fuckshit, so he braces himself with a sip of his black coffee. Her own cup is filled with no-fat sweet stuff that he can never remember because there are rocket ship blueprints simpler than her coffee orders.
It's the only celebrity thing about her, really. The first few days of working for her, he never anticipated he'd like her this much. Most days, he feels like she could be anyone—just a normal, friendly girl, the kind of girl you'd befriend in some required class in college and borrow books from—but then she steps out of her hotel and there are hundreds upon hundreds just reaching out for her, screaming her name, and he really wonders what happens in her brain chemistry to keep her this humble. She's insanely kind for someone who leads the life she does, and Ichigo feels this strange need to shelter her tender heart from turning bitter and cynical.
He just can't imagine an Orihime with the little flickers of light behind her eyes turned off. It's unthinkable.
They swing into an air-conditioned room that's meant to be her tour manager's office. A couple of people are already seated by the round table, laptops propped open and papers strewn about. Yoruichi, Orihime's dance instructor, shoots him a nod, which he returns. He's kind of scared of her, but she seems alright enough when she doesn't have a baton in her hand.
At the head of the table stands Orihime's eccentric tour manager herself, and Ichigo feels a line of sweat drop at her menacing grin.
"There you are!" Rukia Kuchiki cheers, gesturing at an office attendant to close the door behind them. She has a giant whiteboard behind her, and Ichigo can't possibly fathom what for, but he slides into the lounge chair beside Orihime anyway. Riruka, her stylist, budges over and sniffs haughtily, which he supposes is her version of wishing him a good morning.
"Alright," Tatsuki glances at her watch. "You've been waiting a while for us, Ms. Kuchiki, so I suppose it's only fair we let you start without holding you back any longer."
"Thank you," Rukia replies, hitching her chin up to regard her audience, and Ichigo wonders if she's a bit short to be a tour manager. "Ladies, and gentleman," she nods at Ichigo, who rolls his eyes, "I'm sure you're all aware that the touring industry is saturated with ideas long overdone at this point." She picks up a marker and stalks around the room. "Fireworks, jumbotrons, snakes—these are props of the past! If we want to make Hello Halcyon Days a success, we have to reinvent the way we perform this year." Her fist slaps against her palm.
"I agree," Orihime says, leaning forward in her chair. "I don't have a definite idea on what we're going to do, but I'm open to suggestions!"
The way these things work, from what Orihime told him, is that Rukia runs an idea by the team, Orihime decides if she likes it, Riruka plans how it's going to look, Yoruichi suggests choreography, and him and Tatsuki decide if it's feasible or not from a security standpoint. Easy enough. That'll do.
Rukia draws a huge circle with spokes, and a bunny stick figure with long, auburn hair standing on top of it. The squeaks of the marker against the board are the only sounds for a moment, while everyone exchanges confused glances.
"I propose we send her out on a giant wheel!" Rukia declares, eyes shiny. "Like a hamster wheel, except she's going to be on top."
Ichigo's mouth falls open.
"Oh, like a circus ringmaster!" Orihime cheers, clapping her hands. "Can I wear a pinstripe suit and a top hat?"
"Oh, you'd look so cute in a pinstripe suit and a top hat!" Rukia grabs her hands and they both squeal.
"Okay, no," Rirukia interrupts flatly, looking offended.
"It would be tough to navigate," Yoruichi muses.
"And also kind of dangerous?" Tatsuki adds, glancing at Ichigo.
"You'd fall," Ichigo says bluntly to Orihime, who flushes.
"There will be safety mechanisms in place, I'm not an amateur," Rukia says, offended. The room quietens again, leaning into her command in an unspoken apology. "Orihime's performances rely highly on dynamism. You don't go to her shows to see her sit on a stool with a guitar in her hand, you see her running around, making use of her space. I know it sounds ridiculous right now, but if you don't have an elaborate enough set-up to match her energy, she's going to look bland or out of place."
"Okay, so maybe we can get something with a conveyor belt to steady her?" Tatsuki suggests slowly, taking notes. "I think I've seen a few of those, I'll get back to you on that."
"Excuse me, but I think you're all forgetting that we have a literal closet line-up already planned for this," Riruka taps her iPad before the display lights up into a silvery, sparkly sequin dress that stops just short of mid-thigh. "She has to wear this, or she'll look stupid."
"How is she supposed to be comfortable in that?" Yoruichi demands, crossing her arms, "She already trips on air as she is."
Ichigo catches Orihime's eyes faltering and feels a spark of something boil in his chest. Yoruichi has a point, he won't disagree, but she could stand to be nicer. He opens his mouth, but Riruka interrupts him.
"She's already so conservative in her choices—nothing about any of this is going to make a statement if she doesn't switch things up," Riruka turns to Orihime with a finality in her tone. "Look Orihime, you can only play the girl-next-door for so long. It gets old, it gets dry. If you want people to care, you have to be a little risqué. Maybe cut down on the donuts in time for the show, too, I don't know." She pokes the underside of Orihime's arm with a pen, and something in Ichigo bursts.
"Don't talk to her like that!" he snaps, yanking the pen out of her hand. His ears are burning with heat and he can't tell if it's out of anger or embarrassment at his outburst, but Riruka is astonished and everyone falls silent for a moment.
Ichigo feels Orihime's hand on his back, just the brief nudge of her fingertips.
"Why don't we take a break and regroup?" Rukia suggests, and that's that.
/.
"You're mad," Orihime observes quietly, her gaze daring to go only as high as his earring and not his eyes. The coffee room is sparse—only a handful of other managers and staff are gathered around.
"I'm not mad," he says, but he reconsiders it, because he feels a wave of frustration build in his chest again. He just shrugs it off, because he doesn't understand it himself.
"You're wondering why I didn't stand up for myself," she says, and he'd be annoyed if it was anyone else making assumptions about him, but her assumptions are surprisingly true; she must have been watching him when he wasn't looking, for her to get all that out of a firmly planted scowl. Ichigo can't fathom why she'd watch him at all.
"Ichigo—" she breaks off to smile at someone passing by, and then turns back to him. "A lot of people's jobs are on the line based on my performance. I hire them because they're supposed to know what's best for me; they're just doing their jobs."
He scoffs. "How is it best for you if you don't like it? I saw you in there, you didn't want to wear the dress."
Orihime rubs at her temples. "It's not easy," she admits, "All these voices; Tatsuki thinks I'm too reckless, Riruka thinks I'm too reserved, People magazine thinks my hair is too much, Daily Mail thinks I had work done on my tushy—"
Ichigo snorts, and she follows him with a small giggle.
"—but I love what I do, and I love that I have so many people who care about me, so it's worth it," she says sincerely, and Ichigo's cheeks feel warm when she looks up at him. "Thank you for being so kind, Ichigo, but I can protect myself, okay?"
He shakes his head. "Dummy," he scolds, a half-smile curving his lips when she looks offended, "That's what you pay me for."
She grins.
Eventually, they agree on a compromise, the compromise being Orihime emerging from backstage in a giant wheel and a pinstripe suit, only to rip it off and reveal her shiny sequin dress underneath.
"You know," Riruka says, "like a mid-2000s Britney vibe."
It's a bit bold, but Orihime seems excited so they all nod along and write down their plans and thus begin the start to their halcyon days.
/.
Summer heat soars high while they're well into the midst of tour. Ichigo feels guilty about complaining, considering all he has to do is open Orihime's mail before she does and follow her around on the rare occasion she gets to leave her hotel. He spends much of his time playing handheld video games with her trainer, this huge guy called "Chad" — and watching her work.
When Orihime goes out on stage at night, she's all-illuminating—the brightest star in a sea of cellphone camera lights. She makes small talk with her fans, cracks jokes that are snort-worthy at best and inundated with puns at worst—and she holds her audience captive with her magical hair, and her swishing hips and her twinkling eyes. She's every bit the princess of pop that she's made out to be, and the sadness that sometimes lingers in the pockets of her eyes disappear whenever she's singing. She loves it. She loves this job, and he's starting to think he—
Well, he respects her. She's a good person. Her songs are all generic enough—love ballad, girl power, break up anthem, and a song about...cyborgs? (he's still trying to figure that one out), but it's her personality that takes front and center. She acts flattered at every single meet-and-greet when young fans propose to her or ask her to kiss them on the cheek or do a silly pose with them; she stops for every photo, does the whole back-and-forth with sick kids at the hospital without the cameras. The mask never comes off because it's just who she is, she's a good girl, through and through.
"Again—from the top," Yoruichi says, bopping her on the nose with a maternal, cheshire grin before taking her place beside Orihime again. Orihime takes a deep breath, steadying her hands on her hips. The music swells, an old-timey circus beat, and the two of them lift and fall into a silly tap dance sequence in perfect synchronization. Then, the music jolts into a beat drop and they yank their jackets off, the first few chords of Orihime's song filtering through the speakers.
She smiles and lifts the mic to her mouth for the thirteenth time that morning before Yoruichi gestures to kill the music and take it from the top again. The backup dancers shuffle back into place. Orihime's eyes meet Ichigo's across the room and her cheeks go pink—he gives her a small smile, and she returns it in full before Yoruichi spanks her rear with a rolled up newspaper.
"Pay attention!"
Ichigo tears his gaze away to see Chad smiling at him. Heat swarms to his neck. "Pretty rough, huh," he says, jerking his chin at the girls. "Don't know how she can be so upbeat about it."
"She wasn't always this upbeat," Chad says, contemplatively scratching his goatee. "This time last year—we were all worried about her."
Ichigo arches a brow. "How come?"
Chad's eyes go so soft with sadness that Ichigo has to recoil for a second. "She was getting followed around a lot the more she became famous," he explains, "She didn't mind the photos much, but she didn't like it when they touched her hair or tried to grab her."
Ichigo had noticed how her breath would quicken before they hit a crowd, but he'd felt like it wasn't his place to ask.
"There was this one time—" Chad stops abruptly, staring at his palms. He doesn't speak again for so long that Ichigo thinks he's done, but then he says, "She wouldn't let anyone touch her for a year after that, even us. She sat down in an elevator and just cried." Ichigo's surprised when Chad looks up and his eyes are wet. "I had to carry her out myself."
They stay silent for a moment, Ichigo's throat cottony and tight with discomfort.
"I think she feels safe with you," Chad says, and Ichigo looks up sharply to see his warm smile. "Take care of each other."
Ichigo feels too dumbfounded to reply. The circus music picks up again.

PIGGYBACK PARADE: Orihime Inoue's Bodyguard Stirs Controversy, CARRIES Popstar Out of Hotel
Paparazzi outside the Continental Hotel were shell-shocked on Friday when 24-year-old superstar Orihime Inoue's bodyguard, Ichigo Kurosaki, hauled her over his shoulder as the pair tried to make it to her car on Midway Street.
Kurosaki was seen assessing the mob, before making the split-second decision to carry the singer himself. Inoue, for one, seemed surprised, covering her flushed face with her hands as they sped through the ranks.
One paparazzi told Us Weekly that this wasn't the first time the bodyguard had stirred trouble for the many photographers and fans that follow the singer around the world. "The d**khead just loves to cause trouble all the time for us," said the pap, who requested to stay anonymous. "Flippin' off cameras (which makes the pictures unusable), shoving us out of the way...what's she doing with a punk like that anyway? He looks like he belongs in the yakuza or something."
Ichigo Kurosaki has no known criminal record as of yet.

"—you moron!" Rukia roars.

"—could have flashed her underwear!" Riruka snarls.
Ichigo winces. Beside him, Orihime keeps opening and closing her mouth like a fish, trying to get a word in, but her triad of harpies don't give her the opportunity.
"I need an explanation, Kurosaki," Tatsuki mutters through gritted teeth and Ichigo would say he tried to give one but Tatsuki's face is too livid to try that. "Do you know how much damage control we'd have to do if her dress had ridden up and shown her underwear?"
Ichigo blushes, because honestly they've talked way too much about her underwear today.
"Tatsuki, please—"
"No, Orihime, he owes us all an explanation!"
"What were you thinking?" Rukia demands and Ichigo decides he's just about had it.
"It was crowded and I didn't want them to touch her, alright?!" he snaps.
The room goes silent. All three of them gape at him like they've never seen him before.
"Ichigo," Orihime says softly, her voice filled with a silent kind of awe that makes his chest hurt. He refuses to look at her, because he knows her eyes are going to be filled with tears and he doesn't want to see it.
"Can I go now?" he mutters.
They dismiss him, and he can tell Orihime wants to follow him, but they hold her back.
Good, he thinks, he doesn't know what he would've said if she'd asked him anyway.

Watch | Orihime Inoue Cosies Up to Bodyguard While Leaving Grammys After Party
24-year-old singer-songwriter Orihime Inoue has made the news once again after photos broke out of her and rumored boyfriend (and bodyguard) Ichigo Kurosaki in the back of a car on Friday. The pair appeared quite intimate, with Kurosaki draping his jacket across the singer's shoulders as they exited the Grammys after party, late last night.
Inoue, who was nominated for 'Album of the Year,' could be seen smiling shyly as the rumored couple shielded themselves from the flash of paparazzi nearby. Sources close to the singer suggested the two have been "head over heels" for each other since April, when Kurosaki joined Inoue's security team for her 'Hello Halcyon Days' world tour.
"They adore each other," one source said. "The energy in the room is just different when they're together, she's so much happier than I've ever seen her before."
Although Kurosaki has almost no social media presence whatsoever and Inoue herself is quite tight-lipped about her personal life, fans were delighted to get a momentary glimpse of the private pair after the after-party last night.
Looks like Orihime Inoue lost an award but gained a heart in the process! Comment below what you think about our new OTP!
