Chapter One

The Doctor's Dilemma

21st November, 2013

Inside the manner that served as the new headquarters of the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, UNIT's director-general, Caitrin Ryan was sat in her office, gently sipping a cup of tea. Caitrin was a tall, middle-aged woman with short, silver hair. She wore a white shirt underneath a black navy trench coat; a UNIT emblem was emblazoned on the side. The walls of her office were decorated with pictures of her three predecessors, as well as other former members of UNIT.

The door to her office suddenly opened, and a tall, middle-aged, male UNIT soldier with short brown hair entered. He, like all other UNIT personnel was wearing the new UNIT uniform: black armour and a black helmet with tinted goggles: he was out of breath.

"You forgot to knock." said Caitrin crossly in a posh English accent.

"Sorry, ma'm," apologised the soldier, who had a Scottish accent, "Dr. Ball has requested your presence in the situation room, immediately."

"And just as I was beginning to enjoy my tea." sighed Caitrin as she put the cup down and rose to her feet.

Caitrin followed the soldier out of her office and down the hallway; passing other UNIT soldiers as she went.

The situation room was abuzz with activity: various UNIT personal stood to attention and saluted as Caitrin entered.

Caitrin approached a man sitting behind a desk: this was Dr. Edwin Ball. He was a tall, obese, elderly man with short, grey hair that was tufty at the back. The man wore thick round glasses, a white shirt underneath a black blazer and a red tie covered with white spots.

"What's the situation?" asked Caitrin.

"A hospital has admited a new patient," informed Edwin, "A female in her early fifties with amnesia, but reading dual myocardial."

"Is it him?" asked Caitrin.

"If it is … he's certainly changed a lot." responded Ball before chuckling and showing a cheeky smile.

Over at a country hospital, several journalists were standing in the car park; armed with cameras and microphones, and clearly waiting for somebody. The group turned and spotted an army jeep entering the car park just as an ambulance arrived.

Caitrin hopped out of the jeep and groaned as she spotted the group of journalists. "Oh, just what we need," she groaned, "When I get my hands on whoever alerted the press, heads are going to roll."

Two middle-aged UNIT soldiers hopped out of the jeep and came to stand beside her: one was a tall male with short grey hair that was parted in the middle and a short, grey goatee, the other was a tall woman with olive-coloured skin and long, frizzy, black hair.

Together, the trio marched towards the hospital entrance, and were instantly mobbed by the reporters, who began flashing their cameras and talking over each other. The two UNIT soldiers gently but firmly pushed them out of the way.

"Director-General Ryan, is it true that an alien is currently residing in the hospital?"

"No comment!" huffed Caitrin as she and the two UNIT soldiers entered the hospital.

Caitrin and the two soldiers walked up to the reception desk, causing the nurse to look up. Caitrin wordlessly flashed her badge, and the woman nodded before standing up and walking out from behind the desk.

"Follow me, please." said the nurse.

Caitrin and the two soldiers followed the nurse down the corridor and into a hospital ward. The woman pointed towards a bed at the far end of the ward. Caitrin looked over and saw a middle-aged woman lying in a hospital bed, wearing a hospital gown. She had short, curly, light-brown hair.

"Was she near an old British police box when you found her?" asked Caitrin, turning to the nurse.

"She was wearing an old worn suit when they brought her in," informed the nurse, "We got rid of it. Aside from a key, there was nothing else in her pockets. Do you know her?"

"Perhaps," replied Caitrin, "I'm not a hundred percent sure. Get somebody to clear this ward imediately, and get everyone to wait outside."

A few nurses came in and helped to clear the ward. After everyone else left, Caitrin turned to the two UNIT soldiers. "You two, go outside and make sure nobody tries getting in here, especially those reporters!" ordered Caitrin.

"Yes, ma'm." replied the two soldiers in unison before saluting and exiting.

Caitrin walked to the end of the ward and sat in a chair next to the Doctor's bed.

"Doctor? Doctor, can you hear me?" asked Caitrin as she gently shook the Doctor's shoulder, "Doctor, it's Caitrin Ryan."

The Doctor let out a soft groan before clenching her fist. The Time Lady's eyes shot open. Caitrin gasped in shock as the Doctor suddenly grabbed her arm. "It's fading! It's never been done before, and the Rogue miscalculated," she cried in a panicky voice while breathing very quickly, "I need, I need, I need, I need … I need my body to trust me."

Caitrin looked at the Doctor in confusion and slight alarm. "Doctor, I don't understand what you're talking about," she said calmly, "Please, tell me what's going on."

The Doctor took several deep, calming breaths before finally looking at Caitrin.

"Time Lords only have thirteen lives, and not to long ago, I was on my last life," began the Doctor in a calmer sounding voice, "The last time I died should have been the end for me, but the Rogue came up with a way to resurrect me and give me a new regeneration cycle, though I don't approve of his methods. I don't have my … my, uhhh … my, the um."

"TARDIS?" said Caitrin.

"Yes, that sounds right, the TARDIS," answered the Doctor, sounding somewhat confused, "I need to travel through."

But before she could finish, the Doctor let out a soft moan before slumping back on to the bed and passing out. A small burst of golden regeneration energy floated out of her mouth before evaporating in mid air.

"Doctor? Doctor?" called out Caitrin.

The Doctor however remained unmoving. Caitrin stood up and walked to the front of the ward, just as the two UNIT soldiers reentered.

"The reporters are gone, ma'm," informed the male soldier, "Is it definitely him … err, her, I mean."

"Yes, it's her," confirmed Caitrin, "I had no idea that Time Lords could do that. Right, I want you two to extract the Doctor and have her transferred to our care at UNIT HQ. I'm going to get the Doctor's TARDIS key"

"Yes, ma'm." answered the two soldiers in unison.

A few hours later, the Doctor was sleeping in a bed in the medical wing of UNIT HQ. The Doctor was dreaming of a memory from long ago.

Flashback

Theta Sigma was still sitting in his back garden, still reading his book. Zita Ita suddenly appeared behind the nearby fence before leaping over it and running over to Theta, who looked up in slight alarm before giving his friend an annoyed look. "Zita, I was quite enjoying this book." he grumbled.

"Never mind that book, I've got something more exciting to show you." declared the young Time Lord.

"What is it?" asked Theta, who had gone back to reading his book, and was only half paying attention.

"I've found a way in." informed Zita.

Theta suddenly looked up in surprise, snapped the book shut and dropped it while leaping to his feet in excitement. "Let's go!" he declared.

A short while later, Theta and Zita were quietly making their way through the empty citadel; occasionally ducking behind corners or into storerooms to avoid patrolling chancellery guards. Eventually, the duo came to a closed metal door with a small keypad on the wall just next to it.

"Looks like your way in is a dead end." snarked Theta.

"Leave it to me," said Zita before pulling out a small remote control with various buttons on it, "I managed to steal this from the academy workshop. We'll be able to hack the door open."

Zita aimed the remote at the door and pressed a few buttons. After a few moments, there was a soft hiss, and the door slid open.

Theta and Zita grinned before high-fiving each other and then walking through the door into a cramped service corridor. The two boys made their way down the narrow corridor, neither noticing the blinking red light above the door.

"The capsual workshop is just down this corridor," explained Zita, "While we might not be able to get our hands on a Type 40, we might be able to get ourselves a type 25, or even a type 26 if we're lucky."

Theta and Zita came to yet another locked door, which Zita was easily able to open using his device. The two entered a large, empty workshop area filled with row upon row of TARDISes in their natural shape. The two Time Lords ran over to the nearest capsule, and Zita used his device to open the sliding door, allowing the two to step inside.

Theta was forced to shield his eyes as the sudden bright light almost blinded him. After blinking a few times, Theta removed his hands from his face and looked around. The TARDIS console room was very primitive. There was no furniture, the walls, celling and floor were white, and the console only had a few basic controls for TARDIS flight.

Theta and Zita ran over to the console, grinning in triumph. Theta used one of the controls to close the doors.

"I can't believe we actually did it." remarked Zita, "Now, Theta, I hope you can help me fly this thing."

"I … sort of know the basics." replied Theta.

The two Time Lords began to work the controls. After a minute, the central column began to rise and fall in time with the wheezing and groaning of the TARDIS dematerialisation sound. But after a few seconds, the sound became warped before dying. The column stopped moving.

"What's happening? Why won't this thing work!" cried Zita in frustration before banging his fist on to the console.

"They must've done something to prevent the TARDIS from taking off," suggested Theta, "Try using your device."

Zita pulled out his hacking device and aimed it at the console before pressing several buttons. After a few seconds, nothing happened.

The duo looked at each other in confusion. Theta bent down and peered under the console, he then preyed a small panel open and groaned in realisation. "They've removed the dematerialisation circuit!" he cried in alarm.

Just then, an alarm began wailing from outside, causing Theta to scramble to his feet.

"You must've somehow tripped an alarm while you were down there!" hollered Zita, "Let's get out of here!"

Not hesitating for even a second, Theta flicked the switch that opened the doors, allowing him and Zita to rush out into the workshop, where they spotted a trio of chancellery guards charging towards them, stazers in hand. "HALT!" one of them yelled.

Theta and Zita dived out of the way as three beams of red light came streaking towards them, only to strike the TARDIS just behind them, but thankfully, there was no damage. Theta and Zita continued to run through the workshop, dodging more beams of red light.

Zita spotted an access hatch and ran towards it before diving through it and sliding the hatch shut.

"ZITA! COME BACK!" yelled Theta in horror as he reached the access hatch and tried to open it, he then began pounding his fists against the hatch, "You can't leave me here!"

"Hold it right there." sneered a voice from behind.

Theta slowly turned around and saw the three guards aiming stazers at him.

"That's as far as you go." said one of the other guards.

Two of the guards marched over to Theta, grabbed him by the arms and dragged the struggling Time Lord away.

"When you tripped the first two silent alarms, we assumed it was a glitch since you managed to dodge the cameras. But then we realised there was somebody in here when one of you tripped the alarm on that TARDIS." informed one of the guards, who was grinning.

"ZITA! ZITA, DON'T LEAVE ME!" screamed Theta in an almost pleading manner as the guards continued to drag him away.

End Flashback

The Doctor bolted up and panted. "ZITA!" she yelled.

The Doctor took a few deep, calming breaths and looked around the room. It was pitch black and clearly late at night.

"Doctor," whispered a voice from nowhere, "Doctor."

"Who's there? Who are you?" whispered the Doctor.

The voice didn't reply, instead continuing to whisper her name. The Doctor quietly slipped out of the bed, crept across the ward and exited the room. The Doctor slowly made her way down the corridor, the only sound being the voice, which was steadily growing louder. The Doctor suddenly flinched as golden regeneration energy briefly flared across her face and hands before vanishing. The Time Lady then clutched at her temples as she staggered down the corridor.

"EXTERMINATE!"

The Doctor jumped as she saw the shadow of a Dalek briefly gliding across the wall. The Doctor could hear the Dalek moving about in her head. The sound was then replaced by the sound of metallic feet stomping across the floor.

"You will become like us!" came a harsh, robotic voice from behind.

The Doctor whirled around, but could see nothing, she then continued down the corridor as the whispering resumed and grew louder, but she could also see Zita's face grinning at her from the shadows, and could hear his laughter. The Doctor stopped at a cell door; the whispering coming from behind. The Doctor opened the door and entered a white, padded cell with a completely bald, middle-aged man sitting in the middle. He was wearing a straightjacket. The man looked up at the Doctor; his eyes swirling with lunacy.

"I need to leave. I need to get out of here." said the man in a manic voice.

"I'm trapped here too," lamented the Doctor, looking at the man in concern, "I'm dying."

An alarm suddenly rang out, shocking the two of them. The bald man looked around the cell with an expression of terror. "Please, you have to help me." he pleaded.

"I will." assured the Doctor, who was beginning to feel a bit dizzy.

Two middle-aged, female security guards rounded the corner and grabbed the Doctor by the arms: one of them had long, dark brown hair, while the other had long black hair that was tied back into a bun. The two guards began dragging the Doctor away.

"I MAY BE ABLE TO HELP!" shouted the bald man, causing the two guards to stop, "I may be able to give you time travel."

The Doctor suddenly passed out. Golden regeneration energy poured out of her mouth before floating upwards and evaporating in mid air.

The next morning, the Doctor groaned as she woke up in her bed in the UNIT medical wing. The Doctor sat up and turned to see Caitrin standing at the side of her bed, smiling. "Welcome back." she said.

"Caitrin Ryan," said the Doctor in surprise before shaking the woman's hand, "How nice to see you again. Oh, new voice. I must say, I quite like it."

The Doctor then put a hand through her hair. "Hmmm, I like the new hairstyle." she remarked.

"Doctor, how much do you remember?" asked Caitrin.

"I'm afraid that my mind's a blank," answered the Doctor, "The last thing I remember is waking up in a field after regenerating. Then I passed out."

"You were found by a couple of joggers, who took you to a nearby country hospital," informed Caitrin, "We transferred you to this medical wing at our HQ. You really don't remember talking to me, or the events of last night?"

The Doctor suddenly saw in her mind's eyes the bald man in the padded cell staring at her. The memory was then replaced by Zita grinning at her. The Doctor breathed and golden regeneration energy poured out of her mouth and flew towards the window before evaporating in mid air.

"Now I remember," said the Doctor, "Who was that man in the cell?"

"Omega," replied Caitrin, "It seems that he's been alive this whole time, and was hiding on Earth as former Prime Minister, Alfred Lawson. He made himself human, was taken over by a Slitheen, but then Omega was fully restored the night Angela Jensen was elected as Prime Minister. We have footage and audio of last night's events."

Caitrin took out a tablet and handed it to the Doctor. The Doctor watched the footage of her being dragged out of the cell, and Omega yelling out that he could help with time travel. The Doctor handed the tablet back to Caitrin.

"Throughout the night, Omega has been giving us instructions on how to build a primitive time travel device with a localised Eye of Harmony as the energy source," informed Caitrin, "But we need your help. According to Omega, the original Eye of Harmony that he created is gone."

"He must've sensed it when the eye imploded," said the Doctor, "You didn't happen to find my TARDIS, did you? I've never been a big fan of primitive time travel technology."

"There's been no sign of it anywhere," said Caitrin, "We do however have your TARDIS key."

"Alright, I'll help you," replied the Doctor, "as long as I can take a trip back to 1963 in order to ensure my continued existence."

"What do you mean, Doctor?" asked Caitrin in confusion.

"My body isn't accepting my mind, Caitrin," said the Doctor, "I need to get the DNA of my original self in order to prove who I am to my own body. Since this time machine won't be able to move through space, that means I'll have to go back to a point in the five month period my first self and my granddaughter were on Earth in 1963, so this will give me the best window of opportunity to get the timing right."

"How much time do we have to get this right?" asked the director-general worriedly.

"Not much time," replied the Doctor, "The regeneration energy inside me is highly unstable, so if we can't do this now, the energy will eventually kill me, then that really will be the end of me."

"Then we'd better get started." suggested Caitrin.

The Doctor went with Caitrin, and helped Omega and UNIT construct the time travel device, which was being powered by a localised Eye of Harmony, which involved taking the entire national grid and creating a mini sun. The time machine could only take you to your destination, and could not be used to return to HQ. Omega had been let out of the straightjacket, and was now wearing a black shirt and tie underneath a black jacket, with black trousers and shoes. Caitrin later showed the Doctor a locker room that contained various clothes. "Sorry to say that the hospital threw away your old outfit." she remarked.

"Don't worry, I'm sure I'll find something suitable." said the Doctor, "Plus, it will have to be something that will allow me to blend into 1963.

And so, the Doctor looked through the various items of clothing, initially finding a light-brown fur coat, some checkered trousers, a frilly shirt and a red velvet jacket. Finally, the Time Lady found what she was looking for: a double breasted, purple, woollen overcoat with wide lapels and a dark coloured funnel neck top, along with grey trousers and flat black heels. The Doctor also added a golden flower pin to the neck of her top and some earrings.

After she was finished, the Doctor entered the large room, where the time machine was. The time machine itself resembled little more than a circle of mirrors connected by wires that ran to a large bank of computers. Floodlights sat on top of each mirror. Caitrin walked over to the Doctor.

"So, what do you think?" asked the Doctor, grinning and spreading her arms wide.

"You'll blend right in," said Caitrin hurridly before handing the Doctor an ear piece, "Put this on. Omega designed it so that we'll still be able to stay in contact with you while you're in 1963. Oh, and you might need these."

Caitrin took the TARDIS key from her pocket and handed it to the Doctor, who pocketed it. Caitrin then handed her some time appropriate money, some bus tickets, a torch and some syringes and needles.

The Doctor placed the ear piece on to her left ear before walking into the centre of the circle of mirrors and turning to face Caitrin and Omega. The two then walked over to the bank of computers and started typing away. The lights above the mirror turned on, and a low humming started up and gradually grew louder.

"Doctor, I wanted to let you know that I just want to live in peace now," informed Omega, "After this, I plan on traveling far into the future, then I'll venture off into space before settling down."

"Well, I'm very proud of you, Omega," said the Doctor, smiling with pride, "I'm proud that even someone who has been as ruthlessly evil as you can change."

The hum grew to a wail. There was a blinding white flash, and the Doctor vanished.

"Good luck, Doctor." muttered Caitrin.

(AN) And that was the first full chapter of this fan adaptation of Doctor Who: Genesis. I hope you all enjoyed, and remember to Read and Review.

Now due to the WIDWWA series being summeries of the plots, I've added a few things that easily fit into the story of Genesis, such as that scene with Caitrin in her office, but it's mostly expanding on scenes. However, any fan adaptation I make is non-canon to the WIDWWA series.

So, in the next chapter, the Doctor arrives in 1963, where she encounters some familiar faces.

Until then, this is TimeLordMaster108 signing out.
