Chapter Two

Back in 1963

The Doctor groaned as she opened her eyes, and found herself looking up at a blue sky. The Doctor slowly staggered to her feet before suddenly feeling dizzy and wobbling slightly. After a few moments, the Doctor got her bearings and saw that she was standing in a large field in the middle of nowhere.

"Doctor? Doctor, can you hear me," came Caitrin's voice through the ear piece, "Is the ear piece working okay?"

"Yes, yes, it's working just fine," confirmed the Doctor, "where am I?"

"You're exactly where you were, but fifty years earlier," informed Caitrin's voice, "Before the manner was even built. You'll have to head into a nearby town, the closest one is Shoreditch."

"Thanks, Caitrin." said the Doctor.

The Time Lady walked across the field and on to the side of a country road, she then began trying to wave down any passing cars, but most of them just ignored her. "Has nobody heard of common curtisy!" she hollered in frustration after the fifth car ignored her.

The Doctor saw a sixth car heading towards her, and began to wave it down. Much to the Doctor's relief, the car stopped, allowing her to get into the back. "Thank you." she said.

"You're welcome." replied the driver, who was a tall, young man with dark hair. He was wearing a white flannel underneath a grey, buttoned up sports jacket. His tie was black with emerald green stripes.

"It would've been quite impolite of me to leave a lady stranded in the middle of nowhere," said the man, "My name's Ian by the way, Ian Chesterton."

"Oh, um, nice to meet you, Ian, I'm Dr. John Smith." greeted the Doctor, smiling in realisation.

"John Smith?" asked a confused Ian, glancing at her with a bemused smile.

The Doctor smiled sheepishly as she realised that she still wasn't quite used to her new appearance. "Sorry, Jone Smith." she corrected.

Ian looked back at his passenger with a curious smile, but continued to drive and concentrate on the road. I Want to Hold Your Hand by the Beatles was playing on the radio.

Flashback

Zita Ita was standing outside a prison cell block in the citadel. The doors to the block slid open, and Theta walked out. His hair was a mess and he had bags under his eyes.

"They let you go then?" asked Zita as Theta came to stand in front of him.

"They let me off with a caution," said Theta through gritted teeth while glaring angrily at Zita, "But it's going to seriously effect my status at the academy."

"Well, it's your own fault you know, you were the one who agreed to come with me." stated Zita coldly.

"Aren't you even going to apologise for abandoning me?" asked Theta in disbelief.

"Apologise? Why should I?" spat Zita angrily, "The only person at fault here is you, Theta. You were so desperate to get away from Gallifrey and see the universe that you dragged me into it. I wanted no part of it!"

"That's a lie and you know it!" snapped Theta just as Zita turned and stormed off, "Hey, don't walk away from me!"

Theta stormed off after Zita and followed him through the citadel, shoving past various Time Lords and earning dirty looks from them.

"You abandoned me down there, Zita!" yelled Theta, "I could have easily followed you into that access hatch and shut the door, but you just left me behind like a coward! Don't you have any remorse?"

"Remorse! REMORSE!" thundered Zita, "I wasn't going to get thrown in jail and loose my reputation. I've always been the one defending you from bullies, always the one who's been by your side, but when it comes to saving yourself, you have to sacrifice the thing dragging you down. You've always been dragging me down, Theta."

"ME!" roared Theta as the two exited the citadel, "Turn around and face me you coward!"

Zita whirled round and punched Theta in the face, sending him to the ground; his nose bleeding. Theta leapt to his feet and shoved Zita, who shoved him back. The two Time Lords suddenly launched themselves at each other and entered a brawl, they rolled about the ground, punching, kicking and scratching, they then rolled down the small cliff that the citadel was perched on, but continued to punch, kick and scratch, even after hitting the ground. Zita roughly shoved Theta off of him. The two boys lay on the ground, covered in cuts and bruises, and breathing hard.

"I never want anything to do with you again!" snarled Zita.

Both Theta and Zita staggered to their feet. Zita turned his back on Theta and limped back towards the citadel. Theta watched on, tears swimming in his eyes. Theta turned away from the citadel and ran off, tears streaming down his face.

End Flashback

Ian drove into Shoreditch, and was soon parking his car in the car park of Coal Hill School.

"This is Coal Hill School," announced Ian as he stopped the car, "I'm the science teacher here, and I have a long day ahead of me with an especially frustrating first period."

Ian and the Doctor exited the car, and the teacher began walking towards the building. "If you need anything, I'll be in the local café after work."

"Thank you, Ian." thanked the Doctor.

The Doctor watched as Ian headed into the building, she then began to make her way towards the 3xit, just as a large crowd of schoolchildren entered, wearing the blue Coal Hill School uniform. The Doctor suddenly bumped into one of the children, causing them to drop the books that they'd been carrying.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, Miss." replied the schoolkid, revealing that they were a girl.

"That's all right." replied the Doctor as she bent down to help the girl gather her books.

As the Doctor looked down, she got a good look at the girl. She appeared as a short, fifteen year old with short black hair. She too wore a Coal Hill School uniform. The Doctor helped the girl gather up the rest of her books.

"Thank you, Miss." thanked the girl as she walked towards the school.

The Doctor smiled at her. "Susan." she muttered fondly before chuckling and exiting through the school gate.

The Doctor entered the town and made sure not to bump into anybody else, she approached a bench with a newspaper lying on it and picked up the paper, the Doctor looked for a date and saw that it read '21 November, 1963'

"It was Friday night when I left," said the Doctor as her eyes widened in surprise, "this is the day before. Oh dear, we must have miscalculated the window's timing."

The Doctor cried out in surprise as the newspaper was suddenly snatched out of her hand. She turned around to see a short, elderly man with short, grey, curly hair and big teeth. He was wearing a white shirt and a blue and yellow tie underneath a black pinstripe jacket with matching coloured trousers and shoes. The old codger was glaring at the Doctor. "That's my newspaper you thief!" he snapped, "A thief is a menace!"

The Doctor gave the man a dirty look before walking off.

On a nearby street corner, a man watched as the Doctor passed by. He was a middle-aged man with short grey hair and a small grey beard. He was wearing a brown duffle coat over a white shirt, a black waistcoat and a black cravat with white spots. He also had black trousers and black shoes. "At last." he muttered to himself.

The Doctor arrived at a bus stop and took the bus that was already there.

After a few stops, she got off and walked towards a graveyard, the Doctor entered and could see two people in the distance. The first man was tall and elderly with long white hair. The man wore a black shawl collar double breasted town coat and a yellow tweed waistcoat over a white shirt with a black ribbon tie, grey tartan trousers and shiny elasticated boots. He also wore a blue signet ring on his left middle finger and an Astrakhan on his head. The other man was shorter with dark grey hair and round sunglasses. He was wearing the uniform of a vicar and was holding a white stick.

"Thank you for the assistance, Father Parkinson." said the older man curtly.

"It was no trouble, Doctor." replied Parkinson, who had a Scottish accent.

The Doctor began sneaking round the edges of the graveyard, trying to avoid catching the attention of her first incarnation, she then stopped at an unmarked grave and examined it, knowing what was buried underneath. The Time Lady looked up and saw the First Doctor leaving the graveyard, after he left, she walked over to the vicar.

"Excuse me." began the Doctor, startling the vicar, who turned in her direction. "Please, don't startle me like that, my sight isn't what it used to be." he remarked grumpily.

"Sorry about that. I was wondering if you could help me?" asked the Doctor.

"Of course, my dear. What seems to be the trouble?" asked Parkinson.

"What can you tell me about the man who just left?" asked the Doctor.

"Oh, he was here about a private matter," answered the vicar, "And he has asked that nobody else is to be involved."

"Thank you, Father." replied the Doctor before running off, ignoring Parkinson, who called out to her.

The Doctor exited the graveyard and began following the First Doctor down the street, which soon led into Totter's Lane, the Doctor continued to follow her first self over to some large blue doors with white paint that read 'I.M. Foreman's Scrapyard' The Doctor watched her earlier self enter the junkyard before quickly following him into the junkyard, where she saw her earlier self walk towards his TARDIS, unlock the door and enter.

The Doctor activated her comms. "Come in, Caitrin. Can you hear me?" she said.

"Yes, Doctor, how is the mission going?" asked Caitrin's voice.

"I've located my first incarnation, but we have even less time than I hoped," informed the Doctor worriedly, "I've arrived only a day before my first self left with my granddaughter and her two school teachers. But on the plus side, I've located the TARDIS, well, a past version of the TARDIS to be more precise."

"Good," came Omega's voice, "You can use the dimensional coding device from that TARDIS as part of a device that will summon your own TARDIS."

"It's too risky to go in there right now when my first self is inside," said the Doctor, "But when he next leaves the TARDIS, I'll sneak in and get it."

The Doctor deactivated her comms. The Doctor suddenly cried out in pain and fell to her knees as regeneration energy covered her hands and face. The Doctor closed her eyes, and after a few moments it stopped.

"That felt worse than last time." gasped the Doctor as she staggered to her feet.

The Doctor then spent some time exploring 1963 and investigating the movements of her first self, not noticing that the man known as James was always following and watching her. He was always holding a small, futuristic looking tracking device.

Afterwards, it grew dark and cold, and so, the Doctor headed to Harry's café. The Doctor spotted Ian sitting at a nearby table and waved to him through the window. Ian turned and spotted his new friend, he gestured for her to come and join him. The Doctor entered and went to sit next to Ian. Donna The Prima Donna was playing on the radio.

"Fancy meeting you again!" said Ian in surprise.

"Same to you too," replied the Doctor, "Thank you for giving me a lift earlier."

"Not a problem," said Ian, "Do you have nywhere to stay, or anybody to stay with?"

"Not at the moment." answered the Doctor.

"Well, you can come stay at my flat until you get on your feet," suggested Ian, "There's a spare bedroom."

"Oh, I wouldn't want to impose," said the Doctor, "I'm sure I'll find somewhere to stay."

"I promise, you wouldn't be any trouble," insisted Ian, "Besides, a lady such as yourself shouldn't be wandering around in the dark and on her own. No, I would never forgive myself if I let you do that."

"Well, I … ohhh, alright, I'll stay for the night." sighed the Doctor, knowing that she wasn't going to win this argument.

Ian simply smiled just as the door opened and a young woman walked in. She was tall and had short brown hair. She was wearing a white turtle-neck with black trousers and black, flat heels. The woman spotted Ian and the Doctor and looked a bit dazed and jealous. The woman walked over to the table and stood across from Ian. "Ian." she said.

Ian jumped in surprise and looked at the woman in bewilderment. "Barbara, what a surprise," he said, sounding startled, "Barbara, I'd like to introduce you to Dr. Jone Smith. I gave her a lift into town."

"It's nice to meet you, Dr. Smith." said Barbara as she and the Doctor shook hands; the Doctor trying to hide her delight at meeting another of her old friends.

"Please, call me Jone," said the Doctor, "So, who are you?"

"Jone, this is Barbara Wright, one of the teachers at Coal Hill School," stated Ian, "She teaches history: knows more about it than I ever will."

"Thank you for the compliment," thanked Barbara, blushing slightly as she sat down beside the Doctor, "Speaking of work, Ian, Jeff has asked that you come in for a meeting tomorrow morning."

"Jeffrey Parsons is the school's headmaster," Ian explained to the Doctor, "So, he either wants to give me a raise, or I've done something to upset him."

A middle-aged, tall, bald man with dark skin and a waiter's uniform came over to the table and gently placed a tray with three cups of tea on it.

"Ahh, thank you, John." said Barbara before blowing on her tea and gently sipping on it.

"would any of you like sugar with your tea?" asked John.

"No thank you." replied Ian.

"I'm fine, thanks." said Barbara.

"Ahh, a decision. Would it make any difference?" asked the Doctor.

"It would make your tea sweet." answered John, looking bemused.

"You know what, it doesn't matter, I'll go without." said the Doctor.

"Okay." said John.

The Doctor gave John a weary smile as he walked away.

The Doctor, Ian and Barbara then sat back and drank their tea.

"You are a funny character, Jone," remarked Ian while chuckling, "You almost remind me of this pupil I had in my first lesson today."

"Think I know who you mean." said Barbara, smirking.

Flashback

Theta slowly limped towards the gate that led into his back garden; regeneration energy glowed across his body, healing his wounds. The regeneration energy died down as Theta opened the gate and slumped face-first on to the grass. The young Time Lord staggered to his feet before wiping the last few tears away, he then walked over to the tree, picked up his fallen book and threw it through the shack window while screaming in frustration, Theta turned and looked at the large mountain in the distance with a single tree at the top: he knew that there was an old hermit who lived up there, and believed that he could maybe give him guidance.

After a short trip, Theta made it to the top of the mountain. Sitting just beneath the tree was a short, elderly Time Lord with thinning grey hair and a shaggy grey beard. He was wearing old and tattered Prydonian Chapter robes. The tree he was sitting under was old and rotted, and was surrounded by long weeds, a few rocks and the remains of sludgy snow.

"You're Cerrel, the old hermit of the mountain," said Theta as he came to sit in front of the hermit, "They tell stories about you up at the citadel; about how you left because of what our society is like, and that you know the secret of life."

Cerrel didn't answer: instead he just sat and looked at Theta curiously. Theta began choking up. "Please, you have to help me," he begged, tears streaming down his face. "Tell me about the secret of life."

Cerrel just continued to stare.

"I have nothing left," sobbed Theta, "I'm seen as an outsider by everyone in the citadel, I'm failing at the academy, and my only friend has betrayed me. P-please, j-just tell me. Because if I can't figure it out, I don't want to go on."

Cerrel was no longer looking at Theta; his eyes were now shut. After a few moments, the Time Lord raised his hand and pointed to something in the distance.

Theta looked to where he was pointing and saw a daisy sprouting out of the ground. Theta looked at it in confusion for a few moments before standing up and walking over to it, Theta looked down, and suddenly, he could see the life emanating from it.

The dark clouds suddenly parted, allowing the bright Gallifreyan sun to shine. The sludges of snow began twinkling in the sunlight. Theta smiled and turned to see Cerrel smiling back while chuckling.

End Flashback

A few hours had passed, and the Doctor, along with Ian and Barbara exited the café, laughing at some sort of joke.

"Well, goodnight, Ian, Jone," said Barbara as she shook both of their hands, "I'll see you tomorrow, Ian … if I make it through the last period."

"You sure you don't want a lift home, Barbara? I don't mind." said Ian.

"I'll be fine, but thanks for the offer." replied Barbara before smiling and walking off.

The Doctor and Ian walked over to Ian's car and hopped inside. Just a few feet away, James watched as the car sped off, he then kicked a lamppost in frustration.

The Doctor and Ian arrived at Ian's flat and entered the small living room. Ian turned on the light. "Welcome to my humble abode," he said, throwing his arms out wide, "It's not much, but it's home."

"I think it's a very nice flat." remarked the Doctor.

"Oh, thank you, Jone," replied Ian, taken aback, "I'm going to turn in for the night. The spare room is just down the hall. If you need anything, just let me know. There's a spare key on the coffee table for guests."

"Thank you." replied the Doctor before making her way to the spare room.

Once the Doctor entered, she activated her comms.

"Doctor, what's the current situation?" came Caitrin's voice.

"I'm currently staying at the flat of one of my original traveling companions," informed the Doctor, "Though I'm starting to get the strangest feeling that somebody is watching me. Also had another brief outburst of regeneration energy; this one felt worse"

"It's vital that you get that DNA from your first self tomorrow, no matter what." said Omega, "If you don't, then you'll die."

"I'm aware of that." replied the Doctor gravely.

"You need to get that device from your first self's TARDIS," stated Omega, "You'll have to construct the machine by gathering spare parts from this time period."

"Well, thankfully I know just where to get some." remarked the Doctor, grinning.

The Doctor deactivated the comms and listened as Ian went to bed. After a few moments, she crept out of her room, closed the door, crept to the front door and used her spare key to open it before sneaking out and shutting the door.

The Doctor went over to a nearby phone booth and called for a taxi. One soon arrived, and she hopped in.

"Where to, Miss?" asked the driver.

"Totter's Lane, please." said the Doctor.

The taxi soon arrived at Totter's Lane, and after paying the driver, the Doctor hopped out, she then walked down the lane until she reached the junkyard. The Doctor pushed the door open and slid through; not noticing James lurking nearby. She then took out a torch and began looking around for spare parts; picking up anything useable and placing it in the plastic bag.

The Doctor turned as she heard grumbling. The First Doctor was exiting the TARDIS: he too had a torch, and was similarly looking around for spare parts. The Doctor began trying to avoid catching his attention: ducking under various pieces of junk as her first self passed by, she then darted behind some more junk and rounded a corner, only to bump straight into the First Doctor, who let out a surprised yell.

"Oh, I'm so sorry." apologised the Doctor as she bent down to pick up her torch.

"What do you think you are doing here, my dear young lady!" hollered the First Doctor confrontationally while glaring at the Doctor.

"Mr Foreman said that I could take some parts from the yard." informed the Doctor, giving her first self a sheepish smile.

"Oh. Uhhh, well I'm doing very much the game, same, I mean." replied the First Doctor, still feeling disgruntled.

The Doctor pointed at the TARDIS. "Why is that here?" she asked curiously.

"Oh, I just think it's broken." grumbled the First Doctor, still eyeing the Doctor suspiciously.

The Time Lord and Time Lady then resumed their search for spare parts.

Outside, James walked past the junkyard and approached a house with a canary-yellow Edwardian Roadster parked in the drive: 78 Totter's lane. James walked up the driveway and on to the front step before ringing the doorbell. After a few moments, the door opened, and a tall, middle-aged man with short grey hair and a suit peered out at James.

"Are you Ian Michael Foreman, owner of 76 Totter's Lane?" asked James.

"Yes," replied Foreman curiously, "What do you want?"

"I just came to let you know that there appears to be an old man living at your junkyard; a rough sleeper," informed James, "As an English citizen, I thought it best to inform the owner of the property of this, as it's illegal."

"Thank you for this information. I thought I heard something in there the last time I checked, but I just thought it was a stray cat," said Foreman before grabbing a power torch and stepping outside, "Come on, let's go find this rough sleeper."

After closing the front door, Foreman and James walked over to the junkyard. Foreman opened the door and activated his torch.

Inside the junkyard, the two Doctors turned as they heard the door open, followed by footsteps. The two Doctors quickly switched off their torches.

"Please excuse me, young lady, I'd better be off." hissed the First Doctor.

The First Doctor turned in the direction of the TARDIS and walked towards it, but the Doctor quickly grabbed his arm and pulled him behind a wall of junk, and just in time as James and Foreman drew nearer.

"I know you're in here," called out Foreman, "You can't hide forever."

(AN) Ohhh, now that's a nice cliffhanger to end on. I hope you all enjoyed, and remember to Read and Review.

So, in case you're wondering what stuff was original, well, obviously the extensions to certain scenes, but also I.M. Foreman's full name, Zita being even more of a dick, Theta using regeneration energy to heal himself, and in the last chapter, the plot point of unstable regeneration energy is mostly just an expansion on the Doctor's body not trusting her.

In the next chapter, we'll resolve the cliffhanger, and we'll see more of this mysterious James; though those of you who've seen the video by DaDoctorWhoFan already know who he is.

Until then, this is TimeLordMaster108 signing out.
