"What the fuck kind of food do Americans eat?" Sparta asked as she leaned forward in her seat. She was sitting to Reyna's right, as she was the only one who wouldn't tattle on Reyna for looking at work on what was supposed to be a day of relaxing.
The haul from the library had been great. Avaris found a bunch of medical textbooks and was going to pour through them for something that could heal Reyna's hand. Aquitaine found old maps and journals that belonged to her sister. If that was useful, they didn't know. Reyna found a few things of interest, but she had yet to look at them.
"Are you serious?" Hylla asked. Reyna jumped as the leather-bound journal was taken out of her hands. She looked up at her sister. Hylla gave her a harsh look. Reyna had been trying to hide the journal in her menu, but it didn't seem to have worked. "We told you no work."
"Fine," Reyna relented. "Just give me the book back."
Hylla glared but finally handed it back. Reyna glanced at the journal as she put it into the bottom pocket of her cargo shorts. The journal had been thrown to the ground in a corner of the vault, just left there. It had been in a section of information about the Roman empire and the clans that descended from it.
Reyna wasn't sure why, but the book called to her. The leather cover was stained with blood, and it was half the size of a regular journal. As soon as Reyna saw it, she was compelled to grab it. The journal called to her like the string of Horatio, the general of the damned, did.
"No work today. Do you remember that?" Hylla asked as she sat down across from Reyna. "We're having a family meal."
"A family meal of an emperor, a goddess, a brat, a decorated veteran," Bristol said with a smirk. "The queen of the Amazons and her lovely wife."
"Just to be clear," Sparta began. "I'm the decorated veteran, and you're the brat."
"Probably the other way around," Kinzie commented. Sparta gave her a look.
"Do mortals enjoy this food?" Arcadia asked as she watched a waiter walk by. She stared at the food on the tray.
"The grease is the best part," Hylla said. She nudged Reyna's foot. Reyna slowly looked up. "You're not getting a salad."
"What if I want a salad?" Reyna countered.
"Avaris said you needed to eat something with a lot of fat in it. A burger looks good," Bristol commented.
"It says kids eat free. Let's say I'm twelve," Sparta suggested. Bristol looked at her, and Kinzie muttered something under her breath about Sparta acting like one.
"No one is going to believe that," Bristol argued.
"We can use the Mist!" Sparta said with a smile on her face.
"No one will be fooled," Bristol said as he waved his hand. "Besides, what kind of twelve-year-old has a scar like yours?"
"A badass twelve-year-old," Sparta answered. Bristol chuckled, and Arcadia smirked.
"Actually, how are we paying for this?" Kinzie questioned. "I didn't bring my wallet."
"A wallet?" Arcadia asked in confusion. Sparta pulled her wallet out that looked like it was years old. She opened it and pulled out a few rubles. Reyna didn't think this restaurant would accept that currency. Bristol pulled out his wallet and dug through a few cards.
"Is that a Blockbuster card!? How old are you?" Sparta questioned. She laughed as Bristol swatted her.
"I have it covered," Reyna said as she pulled out her wallet and flashed the credit card that Atropos had given her. As she put it back, her gaze moved to the denarii in her wallet, and a frown came to her face. She pocketed the wallet.
Reyna almost felt bad as the waiter walked over. They all ordered their drinks and food, and when Reyna tried to order a salad, her sister promptly talked over her and ordered her something called the 'heart attack burger'.
"What can I get for you?" the waiter asked as he looked at Arcadia. The goddess studied the menu and then looked up at them for help. Reyna couldn't remember a time that she saw the goddess eat.
"Heart attack. Heart attack," Sparta chanted under her breath. Bristol looked like he was trying to fight a smile as he nodded his agreement.
"Alright. I'll try the heart attack burger," Arcadia said. She slowly handed off her menu, and the waiter walked away. "Is that meant to kill people?"
"It just means it's really greasy and unhealthy. And probably delicious," Kinzie answered.
"Why was Kinzie allowed to order a salad?" Reyna questioned. Hylla looked at her. "I wasn't allowed to."
"Because a doctor hasn't told Kinzie that she needs to eat more," Hylla answered. "And, you're going to eat all of it."
"You should eat more."
The entire table except for Reyna froze. Hylla just stared with wide eyes. Kinzie's jaw dropped. Sparta almost scooted away from the table, and Bristol turned his head to gawk. Even Arcadia looked surprised and speechless.
"Atropos," Reyna greeted as she looked at her patron. She bowed her head towards the Fate. "What can I do for you?"
"The Olympians want to speak with you," Arcadia began. Reyna tensed. "They know what happened to your mother."
"And?" Reyna slowly asked as she felt her mouth go dry. A shaking hand tried to grab her glass of soda, but she couldn't grip it. "What are they going to do?"
"Every Olympian swore on the River Styx that you would not be harmed," Atropos answered. "I am not going to force you to go. It is your decision. I am just here to bring forth the offer. I realize now I should have waited until after you ate."
Reyna remained silent. Her body was starting to shake. Hylla reached across the table and grabbed her hand. Reyna closed her eyes and tried to calm down. Talking to the Olympians was the last thing she wanted to do, but this could be a good thing. She would see where she stood with the Olympians.
Besides, the Olympians swore on the River Styx that Reyna would not be harmed. Not only did they swear on the Styx, they also swore to Atropos. They would have to be suicidal to break that vow; however, was there a chance they would break it to get rid of Reyna?
"If you go, I will go with you," Arcadia promised.
"I will as well," Atropos stated. Reyna slowly looked up at the Fate. "To make sure the gods keep their promise."
"Okay," Reyna decided after a few moments. She did not think the gods, as prideful and cocky as they may be, would not dare break a vow they made to a Fate. "I'll go."
Reyna started to stand, but Atropos held up a hand, "Eat first. I will tell them that you will meet with them in a few hours. Get a dessert as well."
Reyna nodded, and Atropos disappeared from sight. Sparta stared at where the Fate had been, looked at Arcadia, and then back in the empty chair. Bristol stared at Reyna. Hylla tightened her grip on Reyna's hand.
"So, are you going to argue with Atropos about eating dessert?" Hylla asked after a minute of silence. The tension and shock at the table lifted. Reyna looked at her sister.
"She's a Fate. Why would I argue with her?" Reyna countered.
"Because you argue with everyone," Arcadia stated. Reyna looked at her in betrayal. The goddess smirked. "You always argue with Avaris about resting, and you try to argue with me about everything."
"I don't think you should be bullying your imperator," Reyna said.
"Someone needs to take you down a peg," Hylla teased. Reyna glared at her sister and then Arcadia. She looked at Bristol and Sparta.
"What do you two think?" Reyna asked.
"Nope," Sparta refused as she raised her hands. "Not going there."
"Sorry, imperator. I'm not going to pick a side either," Bristol stated. He looked down at the table. Reyna stood.
"No running out," Hylla warned.
"Can I just go to the bathroom, or do you want to follow me there too?" Reyna demanded. Hylla started to stand, and Reyna glared. Hylla laughed and sat back down.
Reyna walked towards the bathroom and sighed softly. She took a moment to examine herself in the mirror. The only armor she wore was a breastplate. The others refused to allow her to take any weapons. Reyna examined the pad that Bristol made for her upper arm. It fit perfectly, and she had already stuffed medical supplies and her pills inside.
Her hand moved to her belt. It was heavier than she expected, but she was grateful for it as well. Reyna looked away and used the bathroom. When she stepped out of the stall and was washing her hands, she felt eyes on her. Reyna slowly looked up and saw a familiar face.
"Zara," Reyna said. She slowly turned off the sink and dried her hands. The peacekeeper watched her quietly. "What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to check on you," Zara said. "Not to see if you're going to work with us or not. Just to see how you're healing."
"I'm doing a lot better," Reyna said after a moment. She turned and leaned on the wall. Her gaze focused on the peacekeeper. "Why do you care so much?"
"I've been in shoes similar to yours, Reyna. I watched what Eris did to you, and it made me sick to my stomach," Zara explained. She sighed and looked down. "I won't bother you for too long. I just wanted to make sure you were okay."
Reyna studied Zara. The peacekeeper had been nothing but nice to her, but Reyna would be lying if she said that she wasn't tense. Her gaze moved to the shadows, and she swore she saw something shift. Reyna spoke, "Camila?"
"Reyna," Camila greeted as she stepped out of the shadows to Reyna's other side. "Didn't mean to scare you. Zara just wanted to check on you."
"How did you two find me?" Reyna questioned.
"I sensed death here. Then, it was joined by an even bigger presence of death. I figured one of them had to be you," Zara admitted. Reyna nodded. "We'll leave you alone."
"Wait," Reyna said. She held her hand up. "I have a question. The peacekeepers wanted me to replace Neith because she's not a demigod. When the hell were you going to tell me she's Cleopatra?"
"What?" Zara asked as her jaw dropped. She stepped back with wide eyes. Her mind seemed like it was racing.
"Who's that?" Camila asked after a moment of confusion. She had a frown on her face and looked at Reyna and then Zara.
"Are you sure?" Zara slowly questioned. Reyna nodded. "But, Neith can't be Cleopatra. She died so long ago."
"Who is Cleopatra?" Camila asked again.
"A powerful figure from history," Reyna answered. "She was alive around the time of Julius Caesar and even had a kid with him, but I know she hated Romans. They conquered her lands, took power from her, and killed another one of her lovers. She was supposed to have died by a snake biting her."
"That snake on Neith's arm," Zara pointed out. She shook her head and started to pace. "Why wouldn't she tell us?"
"Because she doesn't trust us enough," Camila concluded. "We need to talk to Theo, and we need Burza to wake up. I knew there was something off about her."
"I have a meeting with the Olympians," Reyna said suddenly. The other two looked at her. "I'll keep quiet about the peacekeepers, but... this may be the end of our partnership."
"Understood," Camila said as she stepped back into the shadows. Zara looked like she wanted to speak. Instead, she turned towards the shadows and disappeared into them. Reyna left the bathroom and let out a deep breath. She would try to eat her food, but like always, she didn't have much of an appetite.
