On with the show!

2004

The three minute drive from the drug store to the apartment was the longest three minutes of her life. As Jess put the car in park and turned it off, she started to feel her heart pound. She dropped the keys as she stumbled out of the car and felt like she could just start crying.

Everything is gonna be fine.

She picked the keys off the ground, locked the car, and made her way towards the apartment she shared with Sam.

Sam.

Oh my god how was she going to explain this to Sam?

Jess fumbled with the bag in her hands, feeling the cardboard box through the plastic. She attempted to shove the plastic bag in her mini backpack she used as a purse. She could barely zip it back up but it didn't matter as long as it was hidden long enough for her to sneak inside. Jess dropped the keys a second time as she attempted to unlock the front door.

You need to calm down or he's going to know.

Jess took a breath and threw on a smile as she walked in through the door.

"Hey!" Sam said when she walked in. He was sitting on the couch watching tv. "Class run late or something?"

"Or something," Jess said, trying to have it come off as a joke.

"What's up with you? Why are you acting weird?"

"I'm not feeling good," Jess said before she even realized it. "I'm just gonna take a shower and go to bed."

"What's wrong?" Sam asked. Jess didn't even hear him over the thoughts beginning to race through her head. She somehow managed to make her way to the bathroom and close the door. Sam didn't follow her.

Jess turned the shower on so Sam wouldn't hear anything. She opened her backpack and pulled the plastic bag out. Jess unwrapped the cardboard box and read the title over and over again.

Pregnancy test.

Instant results.

Know as soon as four weeks.

Jess struggled to open the cardboard box and eventually just ripped it open. A piece of paper with directions fell out.

Why are there directions? Who needs directions to know how to pee on a stick? How do you fuck that up?

Jess read the directions. Twice.

At this point the tiny bathroom began to fill with steam and Jess felt sick. She sat on the floor across from the toilet and rested her head against the wall.

Come on Jessica. You and Sam aren't dumb. Periods are late all the time.

Jess calmed herself down enough to stand back up and set everything up on the bathroom sink. She pulled the test out of the torn, and now crumpled, box and stared at it.

"Jess!"

Jess screamed and dropped the test on the floor.

"Don't come in!" she yelled out suddenly, even though she knew Sam wouldn't just waltz into the bathroom while she was in there.

"I'm leaving for class. You sure you're okay?"

"Yeah! You just... startled me."

"See ya later."

Jess could feel herself calm down significantly hearing the apartment door slam shut. Everything suddenly felt so much easier knowing Sam was far gone and not sitting on the other side of the door.

Until she suddenly felt like she was about to piss herself. The water she gulped down in her last class to help prepare for this moment was suddenly kicking in. Jess was still shaking as she bent down to pick the test up off the floor. She danced around the bathroom as she attempted to unbutton her belt and unzip her pants.

You're supposed to pee on the fucking stick you idiot! Not the floor! Maybe you are dumb enough to get knocked up.

Jess got herself situated just in time and took the test. It was definitely a lot messier than in the movies.

Remember when the drive home from the drug store was the longest three minutes of her life?

Strike that.

THIS is the longest three minute wait of her life.

Jess cleaned herself up and began to busy herself while she waited. She started by turning the shower off finally and opening the door for all the steam to air out. She could go anywhere else in the apartment to distract herself but she didn't want to leave the bathroom.

Any chance the results will come sooner?

Jess obsessively checked the stick every couple seconds just to make sure.

Nope. Three minutes means three minutes.

Jess started to panic again and think of how she would tell Sam about this whole thing.

She hoped she wouldn't have to.

But what if it's positive?

"What the fuck am I even gonna say?" Jess mumbled to herself. "Hey baby, remember how much fun we had that one night? Well I hope you remember it forever because it's never happening again!"

Jess immediately threw her hands to her face and began crying.

Fuck can the test just say something already?

Jess heard an imaginary timer go off in her head and took one final look at the test.

One blue line.

Shit what does one blue line mean again?

Jess threw herself at the bathroom sink and spun the box around until she could find the answer.

"Come on, one blue line..."

Sam watched Jess go into the bathroom. He waited to hear the shower turn on before turning back to the tv. Since they moved in together, he was beginning to learn all of her little quirks, like acting really weird suddenly. Sam learned that it was better to just not ask. Jess was her own person. If she wanted him to know, she would tell him.

Sam looked over at the clock. Jess coming home late meant that he was going to be late for his class.

Shit.

"Jess!" he called, running around gathering his things. He paused when he heard a scream, followed by a loud clatter.

"Don't come in!"

Sam immediately crossed towards the bathroom, his hand hovering over the doorknob. He took a beat and then shoved his hand in his hoodie pocket.

"I'm leaving for class. You sure you're okay?"

"Yeah! You just... startled me."

"See ya later."

Probably knocked over a shampoo bottle. Girls.

Without thinking anything else about it, he left the apartment for class. Another day, another boring two hour lecture about... something not interesting.

The sun was beginning to set when Sam returned from his class. He entered the apartment as quietly as possible in case Jess was still sleeping. Throwing his stuff on the couch, he went into the bedroom to check. Sure enough, Jess was passed out on her side of the bed.

The landline in the apartment started ringing. Sam quickly closed the door behind him and ran out to the kitchen to answer it.

"Hello?"

"Hi! I'm calling from the clinic at the Stanford medical office for Jessica?"

"She's unavailable at the moment. Can I take a message?"

"And you are?"

"Her boyfriend."

"We got her message about wanting to see the OBGYN on campus. She'll be in on Friday if Jessica still wanted to make an appointment."

Oh. Guess I'm that guy now.

"I'll let her know," Sam said, trying not to show how uncomfortable he was getting.

The woman on the phone started listing off a bunch of information on how to book an appointment. Sam rummaged through drawers to find something to write it all down. Unfortunately, the phone was still attached to the wall so he couldn't go across the room to his backpack.

How do we not have a single fucking pen just lying around?

He found Jess' bag sitting on the counter and knew she would have something he could use to write.

Instead, he found a cardboard box wrapped around in a plastic bag.

See, after she was done with the test, Jess put everything back together and threw it in her backpack so she could throw it away in a random garbage can on campus in hopes that Sam never had to find out.

Clearly, her plan backfired when Sam's curiosity got the best of him and he unwrapped the plastic bag just enough to read what was on the box.

Sam gave anything not to be him right now. He could actually feel his stomach try to jump out of his throat. He pinched himself to make sure he wasn't having a bad dream.

"JESS?" he called out. He tried to run towards the bedroom, then remembered he was attached to the wall from the landline. The woman was still talking when he hung up.

"JESS!" he called again.

"Yeah?" she yawned, coming out of the bedroom still half asleep. She froze when she saw her boyfriend, with the most freaked out look on his face, holding the box.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?"

Jess threw her head back and groaned in frustration.

Seriously? There is no God.

"Calm down Sam."

"Calm down? CALM DOWN? Jess, I just got off the phone with your LMNOP doctor and you have a pregnancy test hiding in your bag and you want me to CALM DOWN?"

Jess sighed. "Did you take a look at the test?"

"You mean the thing you peed on? No! No Jess, I did not think to take a look at the test."

Jess rolled over her eyes and walked over to Sam.

"You're being ridiculous," she said, taking the box from him and opening it.

"You're being ridiculous!" Sam retorted. Immature, he knew. "Why aren't you freaking out?"

"Because it's negative Sam. See?"

Jess held up the stick so Sam could see the single blue line. Sam took a deep breath.

"What does it look like if it's positive?"

"Two blue lines."

"TWO?" Sam's eyes looked like they were about to pop out of his head. "SHIT Jess what if it's defective or broken and the second line is invisible or something?"

"It's not invisible Sam."

"You don't know that!"

Jess couldn't help but laugh at him. He was so cute to watch as he began pacing up and down the apartment to relax himself.

"You know, I think there's a lesson here in all of this," she said suddenly.

"Yeah. Abstinence."

"I was thinking something more like 'don't go through your girlfriend's bag' but sure abstinence works."

Later that night, the two were lying in bed together fully clothed. Sam was on his back with his arm around Jess, who was resting her head on his shoulder and playing with the pocket on his tee shirt.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked quietly, breaking the long moment of silence.

"Thinking how you almost made me call Dean today and tell him he's gonna be an uncle."

And John. Thank fucking god there's still time for that conversation.

"Would he be a good uncle?"

"Yeah," Sam answered without hesitation.

"How long has it been since you last talked? Maybe you should call him anyway."

"What about your folks?" Sam asked, hoping to change the subject. "How would they have taken it?"

"My crazy religious parents don't even know we live together. I can't imagine how they would react to us having sex."

"Promise to give me a heads up so I can leave the country in time?"

Jess softly laughed. Sam kissed her on her forehead and the two continued to lay there until they fell asleep.
