On with the show! part 2 of 2!
TW: potential sexual assault
Sam got no sleep that night. There were no words to describe the emotions he was feeling. He wanted to cry. He wanted to break a window. He wanted to call up Brady and get drunk and rant about Jess fucking him over. But he also wanted to know where Jess was and if she felt as miserable as he was.
And only one person had the answer.
"You fucking dick."
"Where is she?" Sam asked.
"Why should I tell you?"
"Because I know you know. And I need to talk to her."
"What if she doesn't want to talk to you?"
"Rachel-"
"You do understand how severely you fucked up, right?"
"I fucked up? I'm not the one that's being kissed by other guys!"
"Woooow slut shame much?"
"That's not what I meant."
"Pretty sure there's no other way you can say that."
"Rachel, please."
"Bye douchebag!"
"Is that Sam?" he heard a voice in the background ask before she could hang up the phone.
Jess.
She sounded so sad.
Something inside Sam told him to go to Rachel's apartment.
"Is that Sam?" Jess asked hopefully.
"Don't worry," Rachel said, "I didn't tell him you were here."
"He's going to figure it out eventually."
"Maybe. We just won't answer the door."
Rachel handed Jess a cup of coffee. She sat on the edge of Rachel's bed as Rachel started running around the studio apartment getting dressed.
"He was so hurt," Jess said suddenly.
"Maybe. But he still could have given you a chance to explain yourself."
"Yeah..."
"So what exactly happened with this Eric guy?"
"I thought we were friends... And then he asked me out and I told him no, I have a boyfriend. But he didn't care! He started to say shit like 'dump him, date me' and I was 'what the fuck, no!' So then I started to avoid him by going a different way and somehow he found out. Then he grabbed me outside and kissed me."
"And what did you do?"
"I froze," Jess admitted, embarrassed. "I pushed him away and left."
"I woulda kicked him in the balls," Rachel said without hesitation. Jess laughed nervously.
Jess sat on the bed and drank her coffee as Rachel ran around the apartment continuing to get ready. She was in the bathroom doing her makeup when someone knocked on the door.
"Go away, Sam!" Rachel screamed from the bathroom.
"Jess, can we please talk?"
Jess sighed and stood up from the bed. She walked over to the door and cracked it open. She saw Sam standing outside with his hands in his hoodie pockets rocking back and forth on his feet nervously.
"Are you going to scream at me again?" Jess asked, obviously hurt.
"No," Sam answered, obviously guilty. "I really want to just... talk."
Jess turned around and saw Rachel waiting in the doorway to the bathroom watching. Rachel looked pissed. Jess shrugged and grabbed her hoodie off the coat rack. She stepped outside, closing the door behind her.
"What do you want to know?"
"Everything."
Jess crossed her arms across her chest and sat down on the edge of the garden bed outside Rachel's apartment complex. Sam sat down next to her.
Jess told him the entire story. She met Eric at that coffee shop on campus and he walked her to class. They would run into each other in the hallways and somewhat became friends. It was obvious when Eric started to develop a romantic crush on Jess and he asked her out. She turned him down but he wouldn't take no for an answer. She started to feel really weird about it so she started to do things to avoid Eric. Until he found out and kissed her the day before as she was going to class.
"Please say something," Jess pleased when she was done talking.
"I don't know what to say," Sam said, anxiously running his hands over his face and through his hair. "Can you forgive me?"
Jess sighed. "I don't know."
"Jess, I am so sorry," Sam grabbed her hands, "I'm such a fucking asshole. I thought-"
"-that I cheated on you."
Sam hesitated. "Yeah. I did."
Jess took a sharp breath. Don't start crying, don't start crying.
"You said you liked it! And you had feelings for him! What was I supposed to think?" Sam continued. Jess looked at him and caught his puppy-dog eyes. She felt angry suddenly.
"Damn it, Sam," she mumbled, ripping her hands away. Why is he so cute? "You can't guilt me into thinking I actually did something wrong here!"
"I'm not trying to! I just want you to see my side too."
Jess started pacing in the hallway with her head in her hands. Sam watched her from the flowerbed. He truly did feel guilty about the situation and he hated seeing her in distress.
"Jess, what can I do? How can I help fix this?"
"I don't know," Jess whispered. "I'm so embarrassed."
"Why?" Sam asked, sounding angry. "Because some douche wouldn't take no for an answer?"
"I don't know," Jess said again. "Can we just forget the whole thing?"
"I don't think that's a good-"
"Sam."
The two sat there in silence for what felt like forever. Sam bit down on his knuckles as he still tried to process everything. Jess cried a little and wiped her face on the edge of her hoodie sleeve.
"I'm so sorry," Sam said sincerely. "I really mean that."
"I know."
"Can I kiss you?"
Jess tried to fight her smile. "I think that would be okay."
Sam returned her smile. Jess giggled as he excitedly walked over to her. He pinned her against Rachel's door and sweetly kissed her.
"I love you."
"I love you too. Please come home?"
"If I gotta."
