I don't own anything except Corbin. Don't worry next chapter ( I hope) you'll get to actually see Corbin and her new mate, The Creeper. Now Onward Silver!
Trish immediately bristles at the Sheriff's words, tightly gripping at the bandana in her hands. She gives a brief glare at Tubbs, who she doesn't doubt revealed her friend's secret to the newcomer next to him. Neither sibling knew immediately what the supposed Sherriff wanted with Corbin, although anyone with a brain could guess he wants to do with the monster they both encountered. To be rid of that thing forever is all anybody would want, but their friend Corbin? Whatever she's done in the past, she couldn't be anywhere nearly as monstrous as it.
"Who the hell is asking?"
Darry demands as he uses one of his hands to squeeze his knee. The Sheriff doesn't appear to take any offense, instead, continuing to question the siblings; who, he believes may be the key to finally achieving his decades-old goal.
"Dan Tashtego, believe it or not, you're not the only person to have a close shave with that creature you saw. I've seen it too, eye to eye as it considered whether or not I will become its meal."
Both siblings glance at one another, the surprise at this news evident in both their expressions. Taking the Jenners siblings' silence as his cue, Sherriff Tashtego continues.
"I'm a part of a group of folks like me, all who had an encounter with that unholy monstrosity. All determined to send it back to wherever the hell it came from. All of them who had lost mother, fathers, sisters, brothers, friends,"
Tashtego then reaches into his duster's inner pocket to take out a wallet, containing a polaroid of a girl and a boy that strongly resembled him; the girl wearing her hair in dreadlocks and appearing to be in her early teen years; the boy, much shorter than the girl with a poofy hair that's starting to grow out; both looking alive and smiling at the camera. Darry feels his stomach twist into a tight knot at the worn photograph.
"Sons and daughters..."
Tashtego then pockets the photo, not looking at anyone in the eye as he does so.
"It takes and devours all that comes within its path, leaving nothing but ruin and despair as you've seen tonight."
"Danny,"
Tubbs piques up in silent warning to his acquaintance as he glances at the younger adults in front of him.
"Go easy on them."
Tashtego gives Tubbs a half-hearted nod before turning his attention back at the siblings.
"That's why my team and I fight to take down this creature. So nobody loses anybody, as you have, and we no longer have to live in fear!"
"Danny!"
Tubbs scolds as he swivels his head at Tashtego, who clenches his fists as he looks intensely with his brown eyes at Darry and Trish, who are unable to look away. Trish licks her chapped lips before speaking on behalf of her and her brother.
"So what? You want us to join your crusade and fight that son of a bitch?"
Trish then leans forwards, one hand wrapped up in the green bandanna.
"You and what army? What exactly do you have that would be more effective than a whole god damn S.W.A.T team?"
Trish shouts out at the Sherriff who continues to act unwaveringly toward the ever-increasing fury of this woman. Trish blinks away the burning sensation in her eyes, signifying tears ready to burst.
"Not even she could take it on! She was already so badly injured fighting that motherfucker from earlier because I was so useless as to stand by and let her take hit after hit. I did nothing as she tended to her own injuries and patch herself up. I should've taken her to a hospital, fuck her objections! Maybe then she would've been strong enough to finish it off... But I didn't do anything when it took her away."
Trish leans back against her seat, turning her head away so nobody could see the tears spilling out. Darry places a hand on his sister's shoulder as he takes in a labored breath, his face already reddening from the tears spilling out.
"It's my fault, I-I-I was the one who went back to check out the old church even though she and Trish told me not to. It wouldn't have come after either of us if I have just listened!"
Tashtego and Tubbs give a sympathetic look towards the two siblings, practically able to see the despair pouring out of them. Tubbs takes a glance at his old acquaintance before looking back at the siblings, at a crossroads between what he saw personally and the real threat that exists. Would Danny and his so-called "Creeper Hunters" persecute both college students if he were to learn who, or what, their friend really is? If he knew that Tubbs witnessed two monstrous entities tear into one another in a brutal battle that rained with blood from themselves and his men? Corbin, alone, proved to be a more effective force against it than everything the PPD could throw at it, all for two humans she cared deeply for. Danny and his group are already hungry to take down that thing, what if they were to take down their best, and only, defense against that S.O.B in the midst of their vengeful frenzy?
So many questions running rampant in the Sergeant's mind, with no promise of any answers in the near future. For now, Tubbs decides that it'll be up to the Jenner siblings on whether or not they want to divulge the truth. Not immediately suspecting anything amiss, Tashtego offers his condolences to Darry and Trish.
"It's none of your faults. What you're feeling there? That's survivor's guilt eating away at you when, in truth, there wasn't much you kids could've done on your own."
Tashtego leans forward in his seat towards the siblings with his hands clasped together. Darry notes that, like Jezelle, he carried a haunted look that made his age lines deeper and more numerous. Unlike the psychic woman, there's less of a frantic panic in them than the stronger look of a soldier ready for battle. A battle he may never return from. Trish, on the other hand, feels a weight removed from her shoulders, knowing Corbin's secret is still safe with them.
"I'm not asking you two to fight with us, immediately. You can still help with that fight, though. If it's not too much, I need to hear your own account with the creature. Word for word, spare no details."
Darry is the one to do most of the talking, having plenty of practice from before. Internally, he's glad to have authority figures actually believing him as he reaccounts his first run-in with the beast on the road; witnessing dumps its victims down a dirty pipe; falling into its House of Pain; Jezelle's prophetic warning; the death of two police escorts. Darry intentionally leaves out any details pertaining to Corbin's true identity, with any inconsistencies quickly smoothed over by Trish; who, for the most part, stayed silent throughout. The most she spoke is when describing what happened to her friend, chalking it up for Darry to have been in too much shock to be able to clearly recall everything. Although she painted the fight in broad strokes, Trish somehow felt an increasing weight on her back as she begins to realize how much of a fool she really is, feeling now more than ever she could've done more, instead of watching as a bystander as the monster flew off with Corbin.
"... We ran as fast as we could, following both until they disappeared into the cloudy night sky."
"I'm sure you're tired of hearing this, but I'm sorry for your loss."
Tashtego offers to them both despite not getting any replies of the sort, which the old Sheriff expected given their circumstances. He then reaches into his duster for a scrap of paper before taking a pen from Tubbs to scribble down on it. Tashtego slides the paper across the table in between both siblings.
"In case you have any more information or want to take further action."
Trish picks up the paper, that had the Sheriff's phone number written down, which she shows to her brother before pocketing it. Darry gives a nod in thanks at the older man.
"We'll keep in touch."
Tashtego is unable to reply as his radio beeps to life.
"Sir! The truck's been towed away! I repeat the truck's been towed away!"
Tashtego gets up so fast, that he almost knocks over his chair doing so. He answers his radio as he rushes past the door with Tubbs following nearby.
"Oh no! No! NO!"
"We had it towed to the Impound! What else were we supposed to do with it?"
"It's not going to make it there!"
The siblings could hear both men's shouts echoing across the concrete walls until eventually they dissipate and stop completely, leaving them in near total silence once more. Trish takes the Sheriff's phone number out of her pocket, with the green bandana still in the other, holding it so the light can reflect off the black ink as if could reveal some hidden message or clue.
"Should we have told them everything?"
Trish slightly turns her head, considering her younger brother, mostly viewing him out of her peripheral vision without a word. Taking her silence as his cue to continue, Darry does so, stumbling over his words slightly.
"I-I mean, what if-if they find her but she doesn't look... normal?"
Trish lets out an exhale through her nose before replying.
"She won't go down so easily, you of all people should know this."
She then continues to fiddle with the card in hand as she speaks.
"What should be a main priority is to be rid of that thing."
Her grip tightens on to the bandana to the point Darry could hear her knuckles popping.
"As long as the son of a bitch is still around, nobody is safe or will they ever be free."
Trish turns in her seat to fully face her younger brother, leaning against him until she's almost up entirely in his face.
"You really want to prove that you think past the point of your existence? Then, destroy the monster that ripped away so many people from their families and took their lives... like it almost did with you."
Trish backs away at the last part with her head down, allowing her long brown hair to form a curtain around her face. Darry puts a hand on his older sister's shoulder, understanding where she's coming from. He's seen the Missing Person posters covering an entire bulletin board with the new white paper overlapping the much older and yellowed ones. When he was trapped in the Creeper's iron grip, he was so sure that he would join all those lost faces soon. What made it even worse? The thought of his older sister joining them in his place and becoming one of many petrified victims on its twisted tapestry when she begged for it to take her instead.
"I'm here now and I don't plan on wasting my life after the fact."
In that moment, an unbreakable goal is formed between the siblings. While no words were exchanged, it will become their life's mission to do everything in their power to save their friend and eliminate her captor. For all her efforts and determination, Trish feels they owe her that. To hell that she's not human! They will make it so that no one else becomes that monster's victim.
'Hold on Corbin, help is on the way.'
So what did you guys think? What did you love? Tell me about your suggestions. I would love to hear your wonderful folk's thoughts. Not too bad right? I hope you all do fine, just remember to be good people. 'Cause who knows? You could just make someone else's day. Stay weird, my fellow humans.
