On with the show!

"Dean!" Mary called. She grabbed her purse and her keys, turning around to see the teenager appear at the top of the stairs. "I'm running some errands for Sammy's party. Please don't kill each other while I'm gone."

Dean gave her a thumbs up. Mary sighed. Such faith she had in her children. She walked out the front door and Dean ran back upstairs. He went back to his room, closed the door, and collapsed on his bed with his Game Boy. He just started it up when he heard a click.

"What?" Dean asked. He turned his head to see Sam slowly opening the door.

"Where'd Mom go?"

"To get stuff for your party."

"Oh."

Sam continued standing in the doorway.

"Can I help you with something?" Dean asked, annoyed at his brother standing in his doorway without permission.

Sam held up a box of cupcake mix. "You said you would bake cupcakes with me."

Dean scoffed. "No I didn't!"

"Yes you did! Remember? We were in the car when you and Mom picked me up from school?"

Dean groaned. "Do I have to?"

"Yes."

Amused at Sam putting his foot down, Dean tossed the Game Boy on the bed. "Fine. Let's see what we got." Don't come between Sammy and his cupcakes.

Sam flew down the stairs to the kitchen where he had already set up all the ingredients on the counter.

"Looks like you know what you're doing," Dean commented. "What do you need me for?"

"I'm not allowed to touch the oven," Sam said, climbing up on a chair. He leaned over the counter and reached for the bowl.

"Fine. What's first?"

Sam thought about it. "Hmmm eggs!"

"You know how to do it?"

"Yes!" Sam snapped, hurt that his big brother would ask him such a thing. Sam smacked the egg on the edge of the bowl and yolk and shell fell in the bowl and on the counter.

"Here," Dean said, getting out a new bowl. "Like this." Dean gently tapped the egg on the edge of the new bowl and pulled the shell apart, letting the yolk fall in. "You try."

Sam picked up a bowl and tried to mimic Dean gently tapping it. None of it landed on the counter but some shell still fell in.

"Aww," Sam whined.

"That's okay," Dean said, moving on to the vegetable oil. "We'll just have crunchy cupcakes."

The vegetable oil bottle was still full so Dean had to pour it while Sam did the water and the powdered cupcake mix. Sam wanted to mix everything, but it got too thick and heavy after a while and Dean had to take over. Now Sam was scooping batter into cupcake trays while Dean started the oven.

"Dean?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you think Mom would be mad if I invited Adam and Kate to my party?"

"Are you stupid!?" Dean snapped. Sam was hurt. "You can't invite them!"

Sam started to get upset. "Why not?"

"Why would you even want to invite them anyway?" Dean asked, still yelling.

Sam didn't have an answer. He didn't think anything of it. He just wanted to invite them. He didn't understand why he couldn't. But he did not like Dean's reaction, so he went with the next best thing: "You're mean!"

"You're the one who's mean! How could you even think of asking Mom that!?"

Sam ran out of the kitchen. Dean could hear him slam his bedroom door all the way downstairs. The oven beeped, indicating that it was warmed up and ready to bake. Dean sighed and looked at the trays of cupcakes. As angrily as one could put cupcakes in an oven and clean up dishes, Dean did just that.

An hour later, Mary came home to a kitchen table full of baked cupcakes and a still pissed Dean.

"Whoa! What happened in here?" she asked.

"Sam's stupid cupcakes," Dean mumbled, taking out the last of the batch and turning the oven off.

Mary sighed and set the groceries on the ground. "Alright. What happened?"

"Nothing!"

"Then why isn't Sam down here helping you?"

Dean didn't hesitate to answer. "Cause he's up in his room pouting like a baby."

"Dean."

Dean slammed the now empty cupcake tray in the sink. "He is! He asked me if you would be mad if he invited Kate and Adam to his stupid party and I said you would be and then he ran upstairs!"

"Are you sure it's not you who might be upset?"

Dean was surprised. "Why would I be upset?"

"Well... it's just, you haven't really met Kate and Adam yet."

"Because I don't want to!"

"I know. But Dean, they're not going to go away. You can't keep avoiding them forever."

Dean did not like hearing that. He clenched his jaw and he felt like hitting something.

"Come here," Mary said gently. Dean shuffled his feet and sat down in the chair she was pointing at. Mary dug through one of the grocery bags and pulled out a container of frosting. She grabbed two knives and a plate of cooled-down cupcakes and set everything down in front of him.

"I don't know if you noticed, Dean," Mary said, sitting in the chair next to him. She opened the frosting and started putting it on a cupcake. "But Sam is very happy being a big brother. I'm not surprised that he wants to invite Adam."

"Can't you just tell him no?" Dean whined.

"Why?"

Dean hesitated. He did not want them to come. But also, why did he care? it's Sam's party! If Sam wants them to come, then that's it. Why was that bothering him so much?

Mary noticed Dean lost in thought and pushed a cupcake in front of Dean. Dean slowly picked it up and started to frost it. The two sat there in silence for a few minutes just frosting cupcakes.

"I just want things to go back to normal," Dean admitted suddenly.

"This is normal," Mary said. "We just have to get used to it."

"Mom?" a voice from the top of the stairs called.

"In here!"

Footsteps came downstairs, followed by Sam walking into the kitchen. "Whoa! That's a lot of cupcakes!"

"Come over here and try one," Mary told him. Sam happily took a frosted cupcake off the counter and took a bite. "What do you think?"

"It's good!" Sam said with a mouthful of cupcake.

"Do you have something to say to your brother?"

"Thank you!" Sam squealed. Dean snorted at frosting on Sam's nose.

"You're welcome," Dean mumbled out of kindness.

"So Sammy, I heard you wanted to invite Adam and Kate to your party?"

"Oh," Sam said, sounding disappointed. "Yeah but... it's okay if they can't."

Mary looked over at Dean. Dean gave her a nod.

"Actually, Dean and I were talking and if you want to invite them, you can."

Sam perked up. "Really?"

"Yeah! Why don't you go call your dad and tell him?"

"Okay!" Sam ran over to the phone and started dialing John's number. "Hi Dad! I have something to ask you... Can you bring Adam to my party... Yes Mom said it was okay..."

Mary leaned over towards Dean. "Are you sure you're okay with this?"

Dean took a deep breath. "Yup."

"Let me talk to him," Mary said, walking over to Sam and taking the phone from him.
