It's another day at school, and Chrono is once again handing out flyers at the front gate, but this time, by himself. "Come and join the Vanguard Club." He says to the passing students in a very unenthusiastic expression, but when no kids stop to take a flyer, the twirly head lets out a loud sigh, "Is no one interested in Vanguard here?"
He then hears a voice behind him say, "Maybe it's because you're being a little too standoffish." He turns around to see Tokoha strolling up behind him. "Try smiling more! People will show interest if you put on a friendly face. Not this grumpy frown you have right now."
"Uggh…" Chrono groans at her suggestion, which makes Tokoha get up in his face.
"Come on, smile." She requests of him.
Chrono looks at her in the eyes, and he can see how serious she is, so he swallows his pride and forcefully shapes his mouth into a very awkward-looking smile.
"Oh, come on! You look like you're constipated," Tokoha mocks him, "I know you can do better. I want to see a genuine smile." Chrono tries once again, forcing his mouth into the shape of a smile, but once again, Tokoha comments, "Now you just look silly."
"I'm trying okay," Chrono snaps at her, "but this is really hard!"
"I know you can do better Chrono." Tokoha tells him, "I've seen your genuine smile. That's the Chrono I want in this club." Her words almost seem to hit him like a soccer ball to the face (Turn 4), "So keep practicing, okay? I'll see you in class, okay?" Tokoha says as he walks off, waving back at him.
Chrono sighs, accepting that he should start trying to smile more.
Opening Theme – STORY (Luck & Logic OP)
TURN 7 – Solar Radiance, Taiyou Asukawa
After the first class period, Chrono walks down the halls of school, still pondering over what Tokoha told him this morning when he notices something happening by the stairs. He sees two delinquent-looking boys, one tall and slightly muscular, the other move average looking with a buzz-cut, standing over a smaller, younger-looking boy with mildly spiky light-brown hair, who appears to be cowering.
"Heh heh, whatcha got there kid?" the muscular delinquent asks the younger boy in a mocking tone of voice. He refers to the deck of cards that the boy is holding in his hands.
The buzz-cut delinquent then grabs the boy by the arm that is holding the deck, cause the boy the shout "N-No!"
The muscular delinquent then takes the deck from the boy and begins looking through it. After seeing some of the cards in it, a scowl of disgust comes over his face. "Tch, these cards are pathetic!" he exclaims. The buzz-cut delinquent then holds the boy over the railing as the muscular one tosses the deck in the boy's face, causing all the cards to go fluttering down to the next floor, "I don't want your pathetic cards!" he says.
Meanwhile, Tokoha, Kumi, and Luna are about to walk up the stairs, but not before they get showered on by the cards coming from the upper floor, making them shield their heads from the rain of cards.
Seeing the actions taking place, Chrono can't idly stand by anymore, and so he walks up to the delinquents. "Hey you." He says, placing his hand on the muscular one's shoulder to get his attention.
Both delinquents turn to face Chrono, as the buzz-cut one asks frustratingly, "Who are you punk?"
Chrono tries to stare them down with a menacing glare as he tells him, "You really shouldn't be picking on his kid."
"HUH?!" the muscular delinquent questions Chrono's words, "Who are you to tell us what we can and can't do?" he gets in Chrono's face, attempting to match his glare, "Sounds like you need an attitude adjustment." He backs away and gestures at his friend, who tries to get behind Chrono to hold him down, but Chrono quickly moves out of the way. "Why you!" The muscular one exclaims as he tries to throw a punch at Chrono, but Chrono dodges that too, as well, and throws a punch back at the delinquent, nailing him square in the cheek.
"Leave this kid alone." Chrono demands him, in a still calm voice.
"Oh? You think you're pretty tough huh?" the muscular delinquent asks, rubbing his face, "Alright, let's rough this dude up my friend!"
"I don't think so!" They all hear a voice come from behind them. They notice one of the male teachers standing there. After some explanation, the delinquents are given detention for picking on another student and causing violence in the school, while Chrono, even though it was in self-defense, still gets a slap on the wrist for punching the delinquent back. After the teacher takes the thugs away, Chrono looks to the cowering boy and asks, "Are you okay?"
The boy, still weary, nods and says, "Y-Yeah… Th-thanks a lot, but… why'd you do it?"
Chrono scratches the back of his head and says, "I just can't stand bullies."
"Oh…" the boy mutters. Just then, the girls come up the stairs. They ask what happened, and Chrono explains. The boy also notices that Tokoha is carrying his deck, "I-Is that my deck?"
"Yeah," Tokoha explains, "that boy kind of tossed your cards on us, so we picked them up for you." She then hands the deck to the kid.
His face lights up in joy as he bows to the four club members and says, "Th-Thank you all so much! I don't know what would have happened if you didn't save me."
"You're very welcome." Kumi tells him in her usual slow and quiet voice.
"Did you build that deck yourself?" Tokoha asks him.
"Y-Yeah…" the boy replies, "I want to play with other people more, but… I don't really have any friends to play with."
"Well, why don't you join the Vanguard Club?" Luna asks.
"Vanguard Club?" the boy questions.
"Yeah." Tokoha answers, "We recently formed it, and we're looking for new members. We'd be happy to have you."
"I-I don't know. I get nervous around a lot of people." The boy mutters, clinching his deck even tighter.
"Oh, there's not a lot of people in the club." Kumi reassures him, "Besides us, there's only one other person in the club."
"Or is that too much for you to handle?" Chrono asks, in an unintentionally grouchy voice.
"Chrono!" Tokoha whispers to get his attention and reminds him he should be smiling. Chrono sighs, and tries to force a smile again as he asks, "D-Do you want to join the Vanguard Club?"
The boy stares at Chrono's distorted face, and eventually bursts out in laughter.
"What's so funny?!" Chrono exclaims.
"Your face!" the boy chuckles as Chrono groans and glances away. "I-I don't know. I just don't know if I'd fit in."
Tokoha smiles and says, "Well if you ever change your mind, come find us after school. We'll see you then." As the four of them walk off, leaving the boy with his deck. "Oh, by the way!" Tokoha remembers as she looks back at the kid, "What's your name?"
The boy panics a little, but answers calmly, "T-Taiyou… Taiyou Asukawa."
"Okay then Taiyou. Hopefully we'll see you after school." Tokoha tells him as they walk off.
"Y-Yeah… I hope too…" Taiyou mutters in a depressed tone as he holds his deck tightly.
Later, after school, the five members of the Vanguard Club, Chrono, Tokoha, Kumi, Luna, and Kazuma, all hang out in the club room as they wait for Taiyou to show up. "Do you think he'll come?" Luna asks as she looks through a notebook, studying.
"I hope he does." Tokoha replies, "He seemed pretty depressed talking to us."
"Chronojet Dragon attacks the Vanguard!" Chrono declares as he fights Kazuma.
Kazuma groans as he responds, "No guard…" he takes the top card off his deck and puts it in the damage zone, giving him six damage. "Looks like I lost."
"Guess that makes us even." Chrono says with a smirk.
"Wanna go another round?" Kazuma asks with a confident expression.
"You know it!" Chrono responds, also with a confident expression. Just then, he hears Tokoha giggling. "What's so funny?" he asks.
"Nothing." She tells him, "It's just, that's the kind of smile I want to see from you Chrono."
Chrono groans and says, "Look, I can't force emotions, okay? So, this is hard."
Tokoha was about to tell him something when they hear the door open. Everyone looks over to see Taiyou standing in the doorway. "Taiyou! You made it!" Tokoha exclaims.
"Have you come to join?" Kumi asks.
"Y-Yeah…" Taiyou responds, looking around the room, "So what do I have to do?"
"You just have to beat one of us in a cardfight." Tokoha explains.
"That's it?" Taiyou asks and Tokoha nods. "I-I don't know… I've never had anyone to play with, so I'm not very good at it."
"That's okay. We'd still let you in if you at least try your best." Tokoha explains.
"So, which of us do you want to fight?" Luna asks. Taiyou looks around the room at all the members until he locks eyes with Kazuma. Taiyou's heart nearly sinks when he sees the black-haired boy, and Kazuma raises an eyebrow at Taiyou's scared expression.
"Ah… SORRY NEVERMIND! I can't join!" he exclaims as he runs out of the room.
"Ah! Taiyou wait!" Tokoha shouts to stop him, but it's no use, Taiyou's already gone.
"What got into him?" Chrono asks.
"Hey Kazuma, why don't you go after him?" Luna requests.
"HUH?! Why me?!" Kazuma questions.
"You were the one he was staring at," Tokoha explains, "and you do kind of have that… thuggish aura around you. I think he's scared because he sees you as a thug. So if you make him open up to you, he might feel different."
"Please Kazuma?" Luna asks, once again, staring at him with puppy dog eyes.
"I'll go with you if that makes you feel better," Chrono says, "he might trust me more because I saved him from some actual thugs earlier."
Kazuma hesitates for a moment, but eventually gives in and says, "Alright fine. Come on Chrono, let's go."
Both Chrono and Kazuma then leave the room to track down Taiyou, who has ran through the school and ended up in the courtyard. He stands in the center of it all, a place where kids were once, earlier, wandering around and having fun, but now is completely empty and devoid of life. Taiyou looks up at the orange sky, as he can see the sun setting off in the distance. He then hears voices behind him, "Hey, kid." Startled, he turns around to see Chrono and Kazuma standing there.
Without saying anything, Taiyou attempts to flee from the again, but Kazuma runs over and grabs his arm, causing Taiyou to panic, even more, saying, "N-No please! Don't hurt me!"
"Hey wait! I'm not going to hurt you." Kazuma says, making Taiyou calm down a little, "I don't know why you're so scared of me, but I'm not going to hurt you."
"Yeah," Chrono says, getting in front of Taiyou, "He and I had a cardfight the other day, and he's actually a really nice guy."
"A-Are you sure?" Taiyou asks him.
"Positive." Chrono answers, but Taiyou is still not fully convinced. "Okay… here's an idea. Why don't you cardfight Kazuma, and maybe then you'll see that he's just a big softy." But these words cause Kazuma, unaware to Taiyou, to toss a dirty glare at Chrono.
Taiyou thinks about it for a moment, as Kazuma lets go of his arm. He finally responds with, "A-Alright… I'll try."
The other two boys nod at each other as they bring Taiyou back to the club room.
After returning, Taiyou and Kazuma gather around the fight table as they shuffle their decks, but as Taiyou is shuffling, he makes a mistake and causes his cards to go everywhere. "Oooh… why does that keep happening?" he complains as everyone pitches in, picking up his cards.
Chrono picks up one card that pictures a young knight with red hair, in golden armor and holding a horse by the reigns. "Gold Paladin?" he questions before handing the card back to Taiyou.
"Th-Thank you." Taiyou thanks him before managing to shuffle his deck properly.
"Are you ready?" Kazuma asks, and Taiyou nods.
"Y-Yes." The two of them then place their hands on their Vanguards as they declare in unison, "Stand up… VANGUARD!"
"Early Dawn Knight, Coel (G0/6000)!" Taiyou declares.
"Dragprince Rute (G0/6000)." Kazuma declares.
"O-Okay. I'll go first." Taiyou says, "Ride! Sunshine Knight Jeffrey (G1/8000)! I use his skill. I look at the top seven cards of my deck and add Sunrise Ray Knight Gurguit to my hand."
"My turn then." Kazuma declares, "Ride! Dragwizard Knies! With Knies's skill, I add Dragheart Luard to my hand. Attack with Knies! Drive check (Critical)! Critical Trigger!"
"AAAHHH!" Taiyou screams as he takes the first hit (Taiyou: [][]). "Uhh… Ride! Knight of Spring's Light Perimore (G2/9000)! I use his skill ([X][])! I call Listener of Truth, Dindrane (G1/7000) and draw a card. Dindrane's skill (Soul 2-1), draw one card. I call Knight of Hard-work, Alienor (G2/9000)! Boosted by Dindrane, Perimore attacks the Vanguard (9000-16000)! Drive check (Draw). Draw Trigger! Power to Alienor and draw (9000-19000)."
"Damage Check (none)." (Kazuma: [])
"Alienor attacks the Vanguard!" Alienor throws her ax at Knies, hitting her, and by extent, Kazuma, in the chest, knocking them back. (Kazuma: [][]).
"Ride! Dragwizard Liafail (G2/10000)! Using his skill ([X][]), I call Abyssal Owl (G1/5000). Then I call Dragwizard Morfessa (G2/10000) and I call Darkness Maiden Macha (G2/10000) and with her skill ([X][X]), I call another Abyssal Owl (G1/5000). Add 5000 power to Macha and draw a card (10000-15000). Abyssal Owl's skill (Soul 2-1), draw a card. Boosted by Abyssal Owl, Morfessa attacks the Vanguard (10000-15000)!"
"Ah… Um…" Taiyou panics before deciding to, "Guard (10000)!"
"Boosted by Abyssal Owl, Liafail attacks the Vanguard (10000-15000)!"
"No guard…"
"Drive check (Heal). Heal Trigger. Add 10000 power to Macha and heal one damage (15000-25000) (Kazuma: [X])." Liafail charges magic energy in his staff before firing it directly at Perimore, nearly disintegrating him (Taiyou: [X][][]). "Macha attacks the Vanguard!"
"No guard…" Taiyou mutters. (Taiyou: [X][][][]) "Stand and draw."
"Is it just me, or do their decks feel very similar?" Luna asks her friends.
"Well, they do both use Paladin decks." Tokoha explains, "Kazuma uses Shadow Paladins while Taiyou uses Gold Paladins."
"And that matters because…?" Chrono questions her statement.
"Because each of the three paladin clans focus on their rear-guards. Shadow focuses on calling and retiring their rear-guards for special plays, while Gold focuses on calling as many rear-guards in a turn as possible for relentless attacks."
"I see." Chrono replies.
Back at the fight, Taiyou holds up a card in his hand and stares at it for a moment. He then looks back up at Kazuma. Taiyou can sense the thuggish aura around him, but when he looks back down at his card, he tells himself, "I won't be afraid. I won't be afraid! Now stand up! My avatar!"
Upon saying this, Chrono looks on with a face of shock, but he doesn't know why, and then Taiyou finally rides his Vanguard.
"RIDE!" In Perimore's place, appears a knight on horseback with spikey red hair, wearing shining gold armor, and brandishing a broad sword with a blade made of pure blue energy. "Sunrise Ray Knight, Gurguit (G3/12000)! Imaginary Gift: Accel 1! I call Herd Archer, Biscotte (G1/7000), using his skill ([X][X][][]) (Soul 2-1)! I look at the top three cards of my deck and call Perimore (G2/9000-19000)! Perimore's skill, when called by an ability, add 5000 power (19000-24000), and with his other skill, ([X][X][X][]), I call Knight of Treasured Bow Vitrinus (G2/9000) and draw a card! Lastly, I call Knight of Strong Favors Berengaria (G2/9000), and with her skill, I Soul Blast 1 to counter charge (Soul 1-0) ([X][X][][]). With Vitrinus's skill, if I called two or more units by abilities this turn, he gains 5000 power, and the ability to boost (9000-14000)!"

Alienor flexes her muscles and lets out a battle cry as she charges at Liafail with her ax.
"Guard (10000+10000+10000=30000)!" Kazuma declares as three of his grade 1s jump in to block the attack.
"At the end of the battle, Alienor goes to the soul (Soul 0-1). Boosted by Dindrane, Gurguit attacks the Vanguard (12000-19000)! Gurguit's skill ([X][X][X][])! I look at five cards from the top of my deck. I call Projection Knight, Muir (G1/7000) and Knight of Heroism, Tornus (G2/9000)! Using Muir's skill (Soul 1-0), add 10000 power (7000-17000), and with Tornus's skill, if my soul has no cards, add 8000 power (9000-17000)!"
Kazuma thinks for a moment, then declares, "Complete Guard!"
"Twin Drive (none/Front)! Front Trigger! Add 10000 power to my entire front row!"

"Wow, that's a lot of power." Tokoha observes.
"Muir attacks the Vanguard!" (Kazuma: [X][][]) "Tornus attacks the Vanguard!" (Kazuma: [X][][][]) "Perimore attacks!" (Kazuma: [X][][][][]) Taiyou pants heavily after that round of attacks.
"Kazuma's already at five damage!" Kumi exclaims.
"Yeah, but I think that's what he wanted." Chrono tells her.
Taiyou looks up at Kazuma, who is hanging his head. "Is that it?" Kazuma mutters to Taiyou, who looks scared, "Then it's my turn!" Kazuma raises a card into the air before slapping it down on the board, "RIDE!" Liafail then vanishes as bright several red circles of demonic power appear on the ground, and standing within the circles is Kazuma's true Vanguard, "Dragheart… LUARD (G3/13000)! Imaginary Gift: Force 1 (13000-23000)! Using Luard's skill! I retire Morfessa and Abyssal Owl!" he points to Taiyou and says, "Retire Perimore!"
Taiyou quivers a little, before reluctantly putting his unit into the drop zone.
"Activating Luard's other skill! For each grade 1 in my drop zone, the cost is reduced by 1 counter blast!" Kazuma then holds up three grade 1s from his drop zone, "and since I have at least three, that means this skill is free!"
"N-No way!" Taiyou exclaims.
"I put two normal units from my drop zone into my deck." Kazuma searches his deck for a specific card and shouts, "I'll so you my true power! Generation Ride!" Luard is then engulfed in a bright, red, light, and when it fades, the upper half of his robes have been ripped off and his skin has become dark and scaley, like that of a dragon as his eyes glow a menacing red, "Dragdriver… LUARD (G3/23000)! Imaginary Gift: Force (23000-33000)! Using Dragdriver Luard's skill ([X][X][][][]). I can call grade 1 cards from my deck for each Luard card in my soul, plus one! I call Dragwizard Morfessa (G2/10000) and Dragwizard Knies (G1/8000)! Knies's skill (Soul 3-2)! Choose a rear-guard and retire it!"
"Um… I retire Dindrane." Taiyou says, again, reluctantly retiring his unit.
"Next, I call Black Winged-Swordbreaker (G1/5000)! With her skill ([X][X][X][][]), add 5000 power (5000-10000) and draw a card. Macha's skill ([X][X][X][X][])! I call Abyssal Owl, draw and add 5000 power to Macha (10000-15000). Abyssal Owl's skill (Soul 2-1)! Draw! Finally, for each of my grade 1 rear-guards, add 5000 power to Dragdriver Luard! I have four, since Morfessa counts as a grade 1, so add 20000 power (33000-53000)!"

"Boosted by Knies, Luard attacks the Vanguard (53000-61000)!"
"Complete Guard!" Taiyou declares.
"Twin Drive (Critical/Critical)!"
"N-No way!" Taiyou exclaims, stunned by the result.
"A double critical trigger?!" Chrono exclaims.
"All effects to Morfessa (10000-30000/Crit 1-3)! Boosted by Swordbreaker, Morfessa attacks the Vanguard (30000-40000/Crit 3)!"
Taiyou panics for a minute, but he keeps a level head and declares, "I activate Gurguit's skill ([X][X][X][X])!"
"What?!" Kazuma exclaims.
"I look at the top five cards of my deck. I call Sunshine Knight Jeffrey and Knight of Spring's Light Perimore to guard! With their skills, add 5000 shield to both (10000-15000) (5000-10000)! I also have Tornus intercept (5000)! (Total Shield: 30000)!"
Kazuma grits his teeth out of frustration that Taiyou stopped his attacks.
"Not bad Taiyou." Tokoha compliments him.
"Th-Thanks." Taiyou replies, scratching the back of his head."
Kazuma smirks, "Yeah, you're pretty good. At the end of my turn, I ride Luard from the soul. Imaginary Gift: Force."
"Okay, my turn then. Stand and draw!" Taiyou looks at the card he drew and smiles before saying to himself, "That's right… no matter what comes our way, you'll always be there for me." He holds up the card and declares, "Once again, I ride! Sunrise Ray Knight Gurguit (G3/12000)! Imaginary Gift: Accel! I call Full Caliver Dragon (G3/12000-22000), and Berengaria (G2/9000)! Using her skill (Soul 1-0), Counter Charge ([X][X][X][])! Finally, I call Alienor (G2/9000) and Dawning Knight, Gorboduc (G1/8000), and since two or more units were called this turn, add 5000 power to Gorboduc (8000-13000), and with Gurguit's skill, all of my units called by abilities this turn gain 5000 power for each of my Accel gifts!"

"He got a double trigger too?!" Luna exclaims.
Taiyou smiles brightly and says, "Add 10000 power to my entire front row, and then another 10000 and 1 crit to Perimore!"

Kazuma starts to panic, "Guard (15000+10000=25000)!"
"Since the conditions have been met, Vitrinus can now boost! So boosted by Vitrinus, Alienor attacks the Vanguard (19000-33000)! With her skill, add a total of 15000 power (33000-48000)!"
"Complete Guard!"
"This will finish it! Perimore attacks the Vanguard!"
Kazuma looks at his hand and lets out a big sigh, "No guard…" Perimore dashes forth and stabs Luard through the heart, causing Kazuma to let out a wail of pain. (Kazuma: [X][X][X][X][][])
The whole room is silent, until Taiyou squeals for joy, "Alright! I did it! I won!"
"That was amazing Taiyou!" Tokoha compliments him, putting her hands together.
"Yeah." Chrono adds, "I wish I could have fought you now."
"You were amazing Taiyou!" Kumi tells him.
"Yeah, totally!" Luna adds.
Taiyou rubs the back of his head and blushes, saying, "Ahh… thanks guys."
"Though I am curious about something." Kazuma says, walking over to the boy, "Why were you so scared of me?"
"Well… I get bullied and picked on a lot," he explains, "so I've gotten very scared around certain people, but I know as long as I have Gurguit, I have nothing to fear. He'll protect me in my hardest times."
Everyone smiles at Taiyou's conviction as Chrono puts a hand on his shoulder, "I can understand that feeling. We're happy to have you in the club, as a place where you can come and hang out with people who aren't trying to hurt you."
"Thanks, and I'm happy to be here too!" Taiyou tells them all.
"So that means we just need one more member!" Kumi explains, "Isn't that great Tokoha?"
"Yeah… but… there's a slight problem…" she says, drawing everyone's attention.
"And what would that be?" Kazuma asks.
Tokoha clinches her fist and says, "We're running out of time. Our deadline is only a week away, and if we don't find a seventh member by then… our club will never be official. Meaning… we'll have to disband." Everyone gasps at this news, and tension builds in the room, as they begin to find ways of finding a seventh member in time.
Meanwhile, Shion walks down the hall, past the Vanguard Club room, and glances into the room, having overheard the conversation, but he simply huffs and continues walking.

Tokoha: I know how you feel Taiyou, but… that's the way it's going to be if we don't find another member.
