Chapter 14: New Recruits
[In the Mother of Fortitude's arena, three witchlings and little demon stand in line in training outfits, and making his way in front of them is a certain bulky commander, walking in a straight line he gazes into their eyes with a serious glare, becoming aware of what kind of people he will train for the next few days]
West: Amity Blight. Willow Park. Augustus Porter. King.
[Amity, Willow, King and Gus stand up straight waiting for him to speak his next words, becoming nervous of his serious tone and large physique]
West: Before you have met us, Luz told us you have been on adventures that defined your limits, you are powerful in the tracks you are a part of in Hexside, and prove to be powerful witches among your kind.
[The group thinks about smiling..]
West: But, never have you ever seen foes as powerful as this. You have seen us in action once before, and heard the story of the Bonesborough market incident. But that isn't even the tip of the iceberg...
[West continues to talk while Luz and Raymond watch from the bleachers]
Luz: Hey Raymond, why is West training my friends? I thought we were going to celebrate later?
Raymond: Well after word got out about the Conformitorium. First thing that happened the day after, these three appeared at our doorstep and asked if they could start training immediately.
Luz: How did they even learn about what happened?
Raymond: Well...I kinda told them that we got our asses handed to us.
Luz: What?! Why would you tell them that?!
Raymond: Day after we got back those three wouldn't stop asking questions. And King recovered fast and we managed to convince to train. For a little guy, he really gives off an arrogant vibe.
[Raymond continues to work on his invention, while Luz puts her hand on herself]
Luz: I wouldn't say arrogant, more like a really, confident guy. Who takes pride in everything he does?
Raymond: Hehe right. But still though, many things happened that night. King with his Spirit Power, you unlocking a new ability, and the big boss showing himself for the first time. It's a lot to take in. I wasn't there when their leader showed up, but you were.
[Luz then thinks back on her first interaction with One, with his words repeating in her head]
One: (And you and I will have to fight another day. But for now..*smirks* hehehe, I leave you this message.)
[Luz clearly has no idea what this guy's deal is, but if she has to fight him one day. She knows she will have to train 100 times harder to get to his level of power, but right now the only thing she can think of are her friends, and what Raymond is working on]
Luz: OOOO? What are you working on? I wanna see!
[Luz reaches her hands out to touch Raymonds invention, but he immediately slaps her hands away]
Raymond: Ep ep ep, no touching. This device is going to help us.
Luz: OOOO. What does it do?
Raymond: Well if you must know. This invention of mine is going to decode the runes I found at the Conformitorium, and as soon as I decode them, we can fix our portal back home.
Luz: *cheerful* Yes! I like this idea! Keep up the good work!
Raymond: Got it!
[Both do a fist bump which distracts Amity, seeing Luz with another guy, it makes her blood boil, yet again feel defeated. But what really got to her was hearing about the portal that can help them get home.]
Amity: (Luz, I know you have to go back..but I sometimes wish you could stay here with me..is it bad to wish that those Runes would lead to nothing..and is it also bad that I want to smash that kid with my abomination. Well the first one sounds bad, but the second one...meh I'm pretty sure no one would mind).
West: Amity, are you still with me?
[Amity snaps out of her distraction and focuses on West]
Amity: Uhm, yes sir, sorry sir.
West: *sigh* Anyway, as I was saying, if the four of you will be fighting with us. Everyone here, besides King,
King: hehehe
West: will have to unlock their Spirit Power. As from what we know, they only appear the first time in desperate times of need. So you'll be going on the next mission with us. But in order to prepare you. You'll have to undergo training with us. It will be harsh, sure, but you have to know that there are things in this lifetime that will bring more harm than others. So I have to ask. Are you all willing to fight?!
Everyone: YES SIR!
West: Will you be prepared to battle the foes ahead?!
Everyone: YES SIR!
West: Do you understand what's at stake?!
Everyone: YES SIR!
West: Heh, very well. From this point on. You are all a part of Shatter Squad. Training will start today, so welcome aboard.
Everyone: YES SIR!
[West turns around and looks at his comrades]
West: You all know what to do.
[Coco, Arthur, and A.X.E.L. nod in agreement, Luz then smiles at her friends who are willing to fight alongside her]
Luz: My friends are joining soon. I don't know whether I should be worried, or be happy? Or maybe both. I should join them!
Kotoha: *serious* Not so fast!
[Luz turns around and sees Kotoha]
Luz: Oh hi Kotoha, how can I help you today?
Kotoha: Pops told me to train you.
Luz: Come again?
Kotoha: Trust me, I hate the idea myself. But according to him he said. *in West's voice* Luz has learned your abilities, I think it would be best if you taught her the ways of ninjutsu, and maybe you can learn a thing or two about witches from her. And all that crap.
Luz: *excited* OOOO! First I train with a witch! Now with a Ninja, and I'm also teaching magic! Can my life get any better!
[While Luz cheers in excitement, Kotoha gives her an annoyed look]
Kotoha: *annoyed*(Seriously, why do I have to train with her out of all people).
[the trio exit the room together and Amity watches them once more.]
Amity: *shocked and jealous* (Wait where are they going?!)
[training begins for all of them, and they start with hand to hand combat exercises]
A.X.E.L.: *calm but eager* Alright everyone, I'll be your combat instructor for today, my name is A.X.E.L., short for Animal's Xany Enhancement Luminary. I look forward to working with you.
Gus: Wait, you're A.X.E.L.?!
A.X.E.L.: Uh yes?
Gus: *excited* You're the guy who prepared that amazing meal Luz brought to school!
A.X.E.L.: Oh I see you enjoyed it.
Willow: We really did, it was really good. You have to give us the recipe...
[Willow, Gus and A.X.E.L. continue their conversation, meanwhile Amity looks at him with look of jealousy]
Amity: (This is the guy who made that meal for Luz...but he's so...old. Wait...is Luz into older guys?! No, don't think like that Blight. Luz would never like a guy this old! But the way he prepared that meal. I can't lose to this guy!) Excuse me Mr. A.X.E.L.?
A.X.E.L.: Yes?
[A.X.E.L. turns his attention to Amity]
Amity: If we are supposed to do combat training! Will we get to use magic?
A.X.E.L.: Well you won't be able to rely on magic for long.
[A.X.E.L. walks over to King]
King: Weh?
A.X.E.L.: King, can you help me with this?
King: Uh ok sure.
[A.X.E.L. then prepares a three legged stool.]
A.X.E.L.: Sit here.
King: Ok?
A.X.E.L.: Alright imagine King was the average witch. And the stool represents your magic. Sitting on something like this makes you feel comfortable. And for all Witches using their magic for whatever situation makes them comfortable yes?
Amity: What's your point?
A.X.E.L.: Well let's say you use too much magic to the point where you are all tuckered out. Then your magic is gone.
[A.X.E.L. proceeds to break a leg from the stool and topples it over causing King to fall]
King: WEH!
A.X.E.L.: Then the witch is left wide open. So this combat class will teach you how to fight without magic, from me, you will learn many types of martial arts, which include self defence, hand to hand combat, pinpointing weaknesses. And so on.
[Gus picks King up]
A.X.E.L.: So for our first lesson, I want you all to come at me with everything you got. Now...
[A.X.E.L. proceeds to his combat stance]
A.X.E.L.: ...give it everything you got!
[five minutes later, everyone is immediately on the ground in pain, A.X.E.L. still stands]
Everyone: *groans*
A.X.E.L.: *easy going* Well this is going to need a lot of work. But from fighting you all I can easily say. *serious* Gus, you have a late reaction time and slow reflexes. In a fight you got to react faster. King, your fighting style is sloppy, your attacks aren't going to do any damage if you don't take this seriously. Amity, you fight like you want to kill me, and want to beat me with all your pent up rage. As for Willow...
[Willow looks up at A.X.E.L]
A.X.E.L.: I have nothing to say.
Willow: *shocked* Huh?
A.X.E.L.: Let's proceed.
[during their training, West proceeds to train Eda and Lilith, both Sisters continues to attack West with practice swords, but no attacks land for West can foresee every attack that comes at him]
West: You two won't be able to attack me with moves like that.
[Eda and Lilith breath heavily]
West: You both battled each other multiple times before, both of you had tricks of their own. Eda with her cheats. And Lilith with her smarts. What happened to that?
Eda: Well...
[She looks at Lilith]
Eda: Things change.
West: Have you two ever thought about fighting with each other instead of fighting by themselves?
Eda: That's not happening!
[Lilith frowns]
West: Alright, let's just take five. I'll get us something to drink, you two wait here.
[West leaves the room leaving an awkward silence]
Lilith: He is right, sister.
Eda: Hmm.
Lilith: Working together can give us a better chance.
Eda: Nice idea. Give it to someone who cares.
Lilith: *angry* What has gotten into you?! We have been training with West for the past month and all you have ever done is snide at his comments and becomes aggressive during training! You've even complained about the training uniforms they gave us!
[Yeah. Turns out they were both wearing kendo uniforms, I chose that because I think it's cool. Don't judge me!]
Eda: Do you really want to know what my problem is?
Lilith: Well if it can help resolve this then yes!
Eda: *pissed* Well if you must know Lily, my problem is that I'm powerless! I lost my magic! I'm letting my kid train with people I don't even completely trust! I can't protect Luz! The whole world is out to get her! And now we are in school again, being taught by some old guy who is probably our age! And the cause of all that...is you Lily!
Lilith: *shocked*
Eda: You cursed me and screwed up my life! And almost killed Luz! You abandoned me when I needed you! And now here we are!
[Eda looks down]
Eda: And I can't do anything right now.
[Lilith tries to reach her hand out to her, then she hears a sniff from Eda]
Eda: *sad* Things have been hard for Luz! Everyday I hear her making those recordings for her Mom. I want to do everything I can to bring her home. But I can't help her. I feel like I'm letting her down!
[Eda begins to bawl out and tears flow from her face]
Eda: *sad* I can't even focus on this dumb training, cause Luz is always the first thing that would come to my mind. If I can't keep up with those maniacs and Luz gets killed! What kind of mentor would I be if I let that happen! So yes Lily that's my problem, and you're the cause.
[Lilith then sits down next to Eda]
Lilith: You're right about it all. I ruined everything. And there are some things that I can't make up for. I don't know if there will ever be a time that I can receive your forgiveness.
[Lilith picks up her sword and proceeds to stand]
Lilith: But I can offer you this!
[Lilith takes her stance]
Lilith: If you want to take your anger out on me! Then you can do it right now! Or whenever you feel like it!
Eda: Lily..
Lilith: *serious* I'm serious Edalyn, you and me! We can fight right now! It won't make you forgive me, but taking your anger out on me through combat would soften you up! And I won't go easy on you! Just to make things fair.
[Eda proceeds to stand and grab her sword]
Eda: So you would let me fight you fair and square. Just like when we were kids. Heheh!
[Eda grins]
Eda: Well, it would make me feel better, but you are right about one thing. I won't be even close to forgiving you!
Lilith: That's fine, I'll do whatever it takes!
Eda: Then let's settle this!
[Eda and Lilith take their stances and circle each other, they both throw themselves at each other clashing their swords to a stand still. Both try to push each other back, but both sisters share equal amounts of strength, Eda snickers and throws a right hook to her sister's face causing her to fall but she gets back up quickly]
Lilith: OW! You punched me in the face!
Eda: *snickers* Well Lily, when in war, anything goes. And you know me...
[Eda runs towards her sister, and jumps about to perform a downward strike]
Eda: I love to play dirty!
[Lilith reacts quickly, grabbing her sword and blocking the strike just in time]
Lilith: But remember dear sister, while you were playing around as a criminal, I worked smarter!
[Lilith then sweeps the ground a Eda falls on her back]
Eda: Agh! You did that on purpose!
Lilith: It's a fight Edalyn...*sarcastic* Anything goes.
Eda: Ok that does it!
[Both continue to fight each other for ten more minutes, then West comes back with the drinks, and he enters through the automatic door]
West: I got the drinks, the kitchen was far, but I am pretty sure I got something that could help boost...
[West looks up and notices the two of the are grabbing each other by the face]
West: What the heck?! What are you two doing?!
[Eda and Lilith hold their ground and try to pin each other]
Eda: *mouth widened* Sho, dish ish how you wanda end shings?
Lilith: *mouth widened* sheem like no hwon ish going tdo win dish fight! Do you wantcha call it a draw?
Eda: *mouth widened* no shanks! We are schtill doing this!
Lilith: *mouth widened* Edalyn!
[Then West punches them both hard in their head forming bumps]
Clawthornes: OW!
West: You two morons! I said to be working together! Not beat the living daylights out of each other!
Eda: It was Lily's idea.
Lilith: Hey?!
West: I don't care! As punishment you two are doing 40 pushups! I don't care if you're as old as I am! Everyone has a lot of spunk for their age! SO GET TO IT!
Clawthornes: Yes sir!
[the Clawthorne sisters proceed to do their punishment]
Eda: whoever finishes their pushups first is the winner of the fight!
Lilith: Really?
Eda: I'm trying to liven things up! Don't judge me!
[West rubs his hand on his face]
West: *groans* Oh boy...(I've been training these two for the past month, and haven't made progress, but this seems like a nice change of pace...somehow. You think so Connie? Hmm makes you wonder how everyone else is doing?).
[Meanwhile Coco is training the four new recruits, to them they were supposed to be training, but for Coco, it's become more of an annoying interview she runs circle around them and takes a good look at their bodies, scanning them for every bit of information]
Coco: *fast* Tell me witchlings...how does your bile sac work? Do you have any other hobbies besides magic? Do you need me to do quick check ups on all of you? Would any of you let me at least dissect one of you? What are your blood types? How old are all of you? What's your favorite colour? Do you like anyone to the point where you would consider to perform immoral acts with them?
[Coco continues to speak, and deep down everyone looks at each other, like they can hear each other's thoughts]
Willow: (Oh Titan this girl can talk.)
Amity: (How does Luz put up with this?)
King: (Trust me you don't even know the half of it?)
Gus: (Is this what I'm like when I ask Luz questions?)
Everyone but Gus: (YES!)
Amity: (Let's just stop this before this gets uncomfortable. Agreed)
Everyone: (agreed).
Amity: Uhm Miss Coco?
[Coco immediately stops speaking and turns her attention to Amity, getting to close]
Coco: Oh yes?
Amity: What exactly is our training with you supposed to be like?
Coco: Oh yes *ahem* for my training it's to understand your utilities.
Gus: Utilities?
Coco: Basically the type of tools you will use on missions. Like my Spirit Power, Djinn can offer me assistance. But I can't rely on him for most of it. So I have tools that help me.
Gus: HUMAN TOOLS?!
Coco: YES!
[Coco opens her cabinet revealing an assortment of firearms]
Coco: I tend to use all of this whenever I go on a mission. But other than that, I'm also a doctor.
Gus: What's a doctor?
Coco: A doctor is like your version of a healing witch. Except I studied various procedures, such as therapy, surgery, checkups, CPR, Chiropractic care, etc.
Willow: I have never heard of half of that.
Amity: So basically your training is to see our skills and see how we can use them in battle?
Coco: That and I'm also going to have to perform check ups on you every week, so that way I can see if there are any problems. Like I did with Luz.
King: Oh yeah, like when we first met.
Coco: Exactly Mr. King.
[she then glares at King with an eager smile and her robot arm popping out multiple materials]
Coco: (Must dissect, must understand!)
King: *scared* WEH!
Coco: *ahem* sorry force of habit! Anyway, tell me what abilities you possess?
Amity: I can create abominations.
Willow: I create plants.
Gus: I create illusions.
King: I usually hide.
Coco: Hmm. Show me a simple spell. So I can see what I'm working with.
Amity: I can't perform my magic without ingredients.
[coco rubs her chink, then immediately grabs a bucket of black sludge]
Coco: Try this.
Amity: What is it?
Coco: It's an experimental liquid I'm working with, completely safe. well fifty percent of it.
Amity: *suspicious* Alright.
[Amity creates a spell circle and summons an abomination]
Amity: Abomination, rise.
[The Abomination surprisingly rises, but instead of a purple abomination fat abomination like her usual ones, this one is black, and seems skinnier, with longer limbs, and fangs?]
Willow: Is that what your normal abomination looks like?
Amity: What's in this sludge?
Coco: Uhm, nothing much, it's best if you don't know. But this is remarkable. A live abomination.
[She begins to examine it and ends it quickly]
Coco: Call it back.
Amity: Abomination cower.
[The abomination returns to being a pile of sludge]
Amity: What do I do with this?
Coco: Oh you can keep it. And now Augustus? Your turn.
[Gus then walks up]
Gus: From the students of the Illusion coven, we like to work with showmanship.
[Gus then disappears and reappears, disappears once more, and comes back with two clones]
Coco: oooooo! Amazing!
[Coco says with an amazed look on her face with both hands on her cheeks.]
Coco: That will be enough, now Willow.
[Coco gives her a seed]
Coco: Try your magic on this seed.
Willow: You got it.
[Willow performs a simple spell circle, and makes a plant, but for some reason the plant won't stop growing]
Amity: Uh Willow, shouldn't it have stopped growing about now?
Willow: I...I don't know what's wrong!
[Coco then opens widens her eyes and observes Willow, and notices something peculiar]
Coco: hmm.
[The plant then grows enormous, and stops growing as soon as the window breaks]
Willow: No no no! I'm so sorry!
[Coco then feels the plant's energy]
Coco: I have nothing to say.
[Willow then looks down with defeat, they then proceed to their next class with Arthur, they continue to walk, Amity tries to comfort Willow]
Amity: Willow, it's ok, that plant was amazing. I'm pretty sure the teachers at Hexside would be pleased to see your work.
Willow: Knowing them they would be. But this felt different. Like I'm not in control. And when we fought A.X.E.L. he had nothing to say to me. And Coco had nothing to say to me! It feels like school all over again.
Amity: Don't take it too hard. I'm pretty sure Luz had a hard time on her first day here.
Willow: *sigh* maybe. What do you think, Gus?
[She then notices that Gus is nowhere to be found]
Willow: Hey where did Gus go?
[she then sees Gus watching another room]
Willow: Gus what are you…
GusL: *SH!*
[She then sees that Gus is watching Luz learning Ninjutsu with Kotoha]
Luz: Ok so basically this ninjutsu has the ability to heal any wound?
Kotoha: *scoffs* Not any wound, just minor injuries and poisoning. The healing hands technique is the most basic of all ninjutsus. So to perform it will take some of your energy. And the right signs.
[Kotoha then grabs Kunai and puts a minor cut on Luz's leg.]
Luz: Ow! What's that for?!
[Kotoha proceeds to do the same thing to her leg]
Kotoha: We need something to work with! So our own bodies are the perfect test subject
[Gus then takes notes and cuts his own leg]
Gus: *whispers* OW!
[Kotoha then hears a noise in the back and pretends to ignore it]
Kotoha: now repeat after me.
[Kotoha performs the first sign]
Kotoha: Rin! Pyo! To!
[Luz repeats her action, while Gus repeats it in secret.]
Luz and Gus: Rin! Pyo! To!
[Kotoha makes the next set of signs]
Kotoha: Sha!
Luz and Gus: Sha!
[She then performs the last symbols]
Kotoha: Kai! Jin! Retsu!
Luz and Gus Kai! Jin! Retsu!
[The rookies perform the mantra right and their hands glow!]
Luz: YES!
Gus: YES YOU DID IT GUS!
[Both proceed to heal their legs, but as soon as Gus heals his leg, two feet appear in front of him, then he looks up]
Kotoha: What are you doing?!
Gus: Oh Kotoha! I just found myself here! And I uh
[gus tries to come up with an excuse, but Kotoha grabs him by the collar and drags him over to their training ground]
Luz: Gus?!
Kotoha: *Tch* thought I heard something.
Gus: *nervous* hehehehe hi.
Kotoha: What are you doing here?
Gus: Well to be honest
[Gus puts his hands behind his back and rubs the tip of his foot on the ground]
Gus: *nervous and embarrassed* When I first saw this ninjutsu stuff, it kind of reminded me of Illusion magic, but after seeing it in action, I wanted to try it myself.
[Kotoha then notices the cut in Gus's leg has been completely healed]
Kotoha: *annoyed* *sigh* If I said no, would you beg?
Gus: Well, yes?
Kotoha: Fine! Just get in here! But if you start complaining!
[She then shows her Kunai and threatens him]
Kotoha: *threatening* I will destroy you, clear?
Gus: *Eager* Crystal!
[they all proceed to their lesson. Willow smiles at them, but Amity however get's infuriated, watching Luz spend more time with another girl]
Amity: (Seriously! First, A.X.E.L., now, her?! Does this get any worse?!)
[As a matter of fact it does, because now it was training with Arthur which everyone had to watch, because everyone besides King didn't have Spirit Power]
Arthur: Alright you two come at me!
[Arthur then summons Crimson Dragon, Luz summons Azura and King summons Peter Pan, and attack, King makes the first move and flies above him, going for an air attack, Crimson Dragon protects Arthur and tail whip him out of the arena. But Luz catches him, and creates spell circles, and shoots light spell lazers, Dragon blocks with his fire, and and blows them away with his wings causing them both fall over]
Arthur: Remember if you can beat Crimson Dragon, you may stand a chance against Tank.
[Both sides continue to fight, Raymond talks to Kotoha]
Raymond: Hey Kotoha, I heard from Luz that she saw into your memories, and you saw into hers?
[Amity's ear twitches and decides to overhear this conversation]
Kotoha: Yeah so what?
Raymond: Well I've heard that something like that was possible, but no one has ever actually done a mind share.
Kotoha: Mind share?
Raymond: The name already describes it, both minds link up and somehow make a connection, forming a deep bond with each other.
[The words that triggered Amity were connection, and deep bond]
Raymond: What was it like seeing her memories?
Kotoha: You don't even want to know. It's not like anything you'd imagine.
Raymond: But how did it happen?
Kotoha: All I remember was being angry and Luz managed to calm me down with that technique. How she did it, hell if I know.
A.X.E.L. Well while you think about that, I'm worried about what we are up against, we're fighting monsters, an immortal man, a girl who can disappear and a monster with god-like abilities.
Raymond: Didn't Arthur say there were seven of them?
Amity: Excuse me we wouldn't want to butt in but did you say you saw into Luz's memories?
Kotoha: Uh yeah? What's it to you?
Amity: Nothing, I just wanted to know why someone who wanted to kill her wanted to get inside her head?
Kotoha: I didn't ask to get inside her head! And what's it to you?! Are you her girlfriend or something?!
Amity: *blushes* pfft! Yeah right! Who would want to be her girlfriend! Not me! She is my friend! My...very good..friend.
[Arthur notices Amity and Kotoha talking, and immediately understand Amity]
Arthur: (Well things are getting more interesting)
[His Dragon blows Luz and King away once more]
Luz: UGH! I can keep going!
King: The King of Demons never gives up!
[Arthur then reaches his hand for Luz]
Arthur: You're getting better at this Luz.
Luz: heheh! Well I've had my practice.
[Luz and Arthur giggle which still infuriates Amity]
Amity: *hgh!
[Practice then ends, everyone left the base and head for Hexside, and Shatter Squad gathers for a meeting]
West: What do we think of the new recruits?
Arthur: Luz's Spirit Power is getting better; she seems to have more control of it while keeping it out.
West: That's good, what about Gus Porter?
Kotoha: Well somehow Gus managed to copy my Healing hands on the first try. It took Luz 10 tries to get it right, but for him it felt natural. I think I can teach him a few things.
Raymond: Well looks like someone thinks the Witches aren't holding us back.
[Kotoha blushes]
Kotoha: *embarrassed* Shut up! I still think they'll hold us back! I just think that teaching them this stuff could be useful!
Raymond: *smirks* Sure.
[Kotoha then punches him in the arm causing him to fly across the room]
Raymond: *groans* OW!
Kotoha: Can we talk about something else?!
Coco: Well from my finding Amity managed to awaken the Beta fragments blood.
Arthur: Wait what?!
A.X.E.L.: No way!
Coco: It's no joke, she managed to reawaken it in a jiffy, like poof.
West: That can prove useful, keep a close eye on her.
Coco: Will do!
West: What about King?
Arthur: the little guy has no skills on the ground, but if he learns to control his flight ability better, he might be able to use it to his advantage.
West: And Willow?
[Coco and A.X.E.L. faces then freeze, A.X.E.L. thinks back to when he fought Willow]
[flashback]
[Amity and Gus have fallen, but Willow manages to keep up, A.X.E.L. goes for a roundhouse kick and Willow blocks without hurting herself she then punches A.X.E.L. in the stomach, A.X.E.L. jumps back and puts his hand on his stomach, normally any punch would make it feel like a short pain, but this pain he feels, somehow felt like being punched by...a younger West. From Coco's perspective when she looked at Willow's Aura, it was bursting from the inside, making her magic go crazy. And the moment she touched the plant, she felt the aura of a God, like somehow it was bestowed upon the plant.]
